Behind every emerging technology is a great idea propelling it forward. In the new Microsoft Research Podcast series, Ideas, members of the research community at Microsoft discuss the beliefs that animate their research, the experiences and thinkers that inform it, and the positive human impact it targets. In this episode, host Gretchen Huizinga talks with Principal Researcher Kalika Bali. Inspired by an early vision of “talking computers” and a subsequent career in linguistics, Bali has spent the last two decades bringing the two together. Aided by recent advances in large language models and motivated by her belief that everyone should have access to AI in their own language, Bali and her teams are building language technology applications that they hope will bring the benefits of generative AI to under-resourced and underserved language communities around the world.Learn more:The State and Fate of Linguistic Diversity and Inclusion in the NLP World | Publication, July 2020Project VeLLM | Project pageKahani: Visual Storytelling | Project pageKahani: Visual Storytelling through Culturally Nuanced Images | Microsoft Research Forum | Episode 1, January 2024Teachers in India help Microsoft Research design AI tool for creating great classroom content | Microsoft Research blog, October 2023Digital Labor: Project Karya | Project pageVillage by village, creating the building blocks for AI tools with work that also educates | Microsoft Source Asia blog, February 2024

Kalika Mehta's book Strategic Litigation and Corporate Complicity in Crimes Under International Law: A TWAIL Analysis (Routledge, 2023) provides a comprehensive account of how non-state actors rely on international criminal law as a tool in the service of progressive political causes. The argument that international criminal law and its institutions serve as an instrument in the hands of a few powerful states, and that its practice is characterized by double standards and selectivity, has received considerable attention. This book, however, focuses on a practice that is informed by this argument. Its focus is on an alternative practice within international criminal law, where non-state actors navigate what critical scholars call a structurally biased legal system, in order to achieve long-term political objectives. Innovatively, the book combines the concerns expressed by Third World Approaches to International Law with strategic litigation that focuses on the accountability of corporations for their complicity in crimes under international law. Analysing this litigation, the book demonstrates that, while it is crucial to highlight the blind spots of the international criminal legal framework, it is also important to take into account the practice of non-state actors engaged in leveraging its emancipatory potential. Alex Batesmith is a Lecturer in Legal Profession at the School of Law, University of Leeds, UK. His research focuses on lawyers, their professional self-identity and their motivations, and how these shape the institutions and the discipline in which they work. LA QUESTION La Question – Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) Lady Aicha & Pisko Cranes Original Fulu Mziki of Kinsasha – Mutangila AVANT/APRÈS – Come On, Let's Go Broadcast – Come On, Let's Go Cineplexx – Come On Let's Go Broadcast – Come On Let's Go (Two Lone Swordsmen remix) Bart Davenport – Come On, Let's Go FOCUS – HSRS HSRS – Maze of Woes HSRS – Miles HSRS – Oh My God LE GRAND ZIGZAG En préambule de ce Grand Zigzag, je tenais à faire une courte réclame sur un événement qui me parle beaucoup – le Festival Pop & Psy qui se tiendra du 24 au 26 novembre à Ground Control. Feist – In Lightning Tara Clerkin Trio – Marble Walls Devendra Banhart – Nun Melody's Echo Chamber - Le Temple Volant (feat. Crumb) Penelope Antena - Beautiful Saya Gray - Annie, I Sing For.. Blonde Redhead - Kiss Her Kiss Her Timber Timbre - Confessions on Dr. Woo The Beatles - Now And Then
Learn more about your ad choices.

Chapter 5 of Devi Mahatmyam talks about how the demons, Chanda and Munda, after seeing Goddess Kalika, praise her beauty to their masters, the demons, Shumbha and Nishumba. Shumbha sends a demon called Sugreeva as his emissary to plead his suit with Kalika. But Kalika's reply is that her suitor should win her in war, thereby taking away her pride and proving to be her equal in strength. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke Durga's blessings and protection. I'm excited to revisit this episode with Kalika Yap, a serial entrepreneur, inventor, intentional mother, and business leader. Kalika is from more humble beginnings. She came from a big family born in the Philippines in the time of Martial Law that then moved to a low income community in Hawaii. Growing up, she had strong influences from her mother who is a teacher and her father who is an entrepreneur. Along with her husband, she now imparts these family influences or “Ohana” and a focus on “Core Values” to her two daughters. We covered a lot of ground in this interview and I felt like I filled my E.P.I.C. Life Toolkit with powerful strategies: to focus on values, develop keystone habits, and consciously choose a life of service. I left the conversation inspired by Kalika to pursue our entrepreneurial dreams and empower other women to do the same, all while being a present and intentional parent. We each have a definition of success that is unique and dynamic; how success looks to us today could be different from how it looks in a month. And we know, achieving that success is virtually always the making of one person, ourselves. We tend to tell ourselves that we don't deserve what we want, we are not worthy, nor good enough. We rarely stop to think that to succeed, there must be alignment in our lives; there must be joy, love, self-compassion, integrity, good health, and not simply a seven figure bank account. In this episode, we chat with Kalika Yap, the ideal guest to answer today's question, Can I Really Have IT All? Kalika is a serial entrepreneur, author, podcast host of two different shows, speaker, inventor, and mom. She is also the CEO of the award-winning brand agency Citrus Studios, CEO & Founder of Orange & Bergamot, CEO of Luxe Link, Founder of the Waxing Company, MyCommerce investor, and Board of Trustee at Seven Arrows Elementary School. Kalika is one of the Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) Los Angeles Chapter leaders, currently serving on the EO Global Communications Committee. She is the host of The Juicery Podcast and EO Wonder Podcast. The daughter of immigrants who struggled to make their way in the United States, Kalika earned her Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from the University of New York. She worked as a journalist at CNBC and Bloomberg, getting several minutes 'on-air' -- her definition of success at the time. But an unexpected shift in her life would leave her homeless, far from her friends and relatives, and with no other choice than to embrace the process of radical acceptance and allow herself to pursue the joy and adventure of thriving in uncertainty. Kalika kindly shares her vision of success, happiness, acceptance, courage, integrity, openness, and much more in this enlightening conversation.
