The Pugs are at the PCA General Assembly! And for their first interview from Chattanooga they welcome Aaron Renn back onto the show. After catching up with Aaron about his life following the Three Worlds of Evangelicalism phenomenon he's responsible for, the conversation shifts to evangelicalism and elites--or, why evangelicals can't seem to really develop any. By contrast, Roman Catholics have no trouble developing an elite class who go on to cultural prominence. So, why isn't that the case for evangelicals? Tune in and find out! Jeremy speaks with Aaron Renn about his influential book, Life in the Negative World. They speak about his framework for understanding the three eras in which American Evangelicals have found themselves in the post-war context—the positive world, the neutral world, and the negative world—and we talk about the decline of institutions, Evangelical strategies for surviving and flourishing in the negative world, and much more.Sponsored by AmPhil, helping nonprofits advance their missions and raise more money: https://amphil.com/.#interview #podcast #newepisode #nonprofitCenter for Civil Society's YouTube ChannelCenter for Civil Society's YouTube Channel

My name is Frank, and I've created and run an online academy that teaches composers how to master Interval Theory—a groundbreaking and intuitive approach to composition. Join the Circle of Interval Magicians: https://musicintervaltheory.academy/skool/ My mission is to help composers break free from generic progressions and write music that truly stands out. Many of our academy members, who range from aspiring to professional composers, go on to compose original scores for films, TV, and video games. And they love their competitive advantage!
In this episode of Spirit Box, I had the pleasure of speaking with folklorist and writer Scott Richardson-Read the brilliant mind behind Cailleach's Herbarium. The focus of today's chat is Scott's new book 'Mill Dust And Dreaming Bread, exploring Scottish folk belief & folk magic'. Together, we explore the deep roots of Scottish folk beliefs, looking at how animistic worldviews were layered over time with Christian, Norse, and Anglo-Saxon influence. Scott introduced me to the Gaelic concept of Dùthchas—the inherited right to place and belonging—and we discussed its significance in shaping Highland identity and political history. We also touched on the shared rhythms of Irish and Scottish Gaelic, the legacy of Alexander Carmichael and the Carmina Gadelica, and the enduring power of charms and spoken magic. One story that really stood out was that of St. Columba lending out his sacred book, only to burn it upon its return—a tale that sparked a discussion about healing, miracle-working, and the threads of folk magic that persist beneath the surface of Christianity. Through it all, Scott painted a vivid picture of a world where people lived in deep, reciprocal relationship with land, weather, ancestors, and the unseen. In the Plus show we ventured deeper into the mythic and cosmological territory of his book. We talked about the Three Worlds, the Primordial Twin, and how these ancient ideas mirror spiritual systems across the globe. We explored the notion of a pact between realms, the sacred nature of hospitality, and what it means to live in a world where everything is animate and interconnected. One of the most fascinating parts of the Plus Show was our discussion on the origins of spoken healing charms—those poetic, potent utterances passed down through families to stop bleeding, mend bones, or ward off illness. Scott spoke beautifully about how these charms carry ancestral knowledge, and I shared stories of people I know who still use them today. We also talked about the Cailleach, the powerful old woman of Gaelic tradition—part ancestor, part deity—who shapes weather and land and who remains a potent figure in both lore and personal practice. Scott spoke about how the Cailleach features in his work and how she represents the deep animism and ecological awareness at the heart of Scottish folk cosmology. We closed our conversation reflecting on the deep-time resonance of folklore—from the Milky Way as the Path of the White Cow to the sacred symbolism of rivers, straw, and cows. This wasn't just a discussion about stories; it was about remembering who we are, where we come from, and how we might live again in right relationship with the world around us. In this episode, Dave once again shares at our Launch 25 gathering, this time focusing on the ‘soil' from which God births movements—the importance of movement values and our personal calling from God. Vision - where movements always start To begin, reflecting on movements seen in hard-to-reach areas, Dave invites an 81-year-old seasoned movement leader (unnamed for security reasons) to share his powerful experience of seeing over 40,000 churches planted across unreached regions of India. This unnamed movement leader highlights the first key characteristic of movement - a clear God-given vision. This vision begins with a personal encounter with God and the recognition that every aspect of life must be viewed from a kingdom perspective. Other movement values Dave then dives into the DNA of movements, such as rapid multiplication, leadership development, and the central role of prayer. Dave reflects on the example of David Watson in India, where movements started in historically unreached states, and how the Discovery Bible Study became a tool for leaders to explore God's word together. • Calling: Movements start with a personal call from God, as seen in the story of a leader in India who, after a deep personal encounter with God, saw over 100,000 churches planted through a group of men in a slum. • Team: Movements thrive when they work in teams, emphasising collaboration over individual leadership. • Multiplication: Rapid multiplication is key at all levels—churches, disciples, and leaders. • Prayer: Passionate, abundant prayer is foundational. Movements in India didn't break through until 100,000 people were praying for them. • Obedience-Driven Discipleship: Movements emphasise obedience to God's Word, which leads to personal and collective transformation. • Gift-Based Leadership: Leadership is function-based, not positional, empowering everyone to contribute according to their gifts. • Access Ministries: Creative approaches are used to access communities and meet needs in meaningful ways. The Three Worlds of Mission Dave breaks down the three primary worlds where mission takes place: 1. The Unreached World: Places like India, China, and Muslim regions where movements are taking root. 2. The Christian World: Countries like Uganda, PNG, and Russia, where resistance often comes from established church systems. 3. The Post-Christian World: Western nations (e.g. Europe, Australia), where mission work is harder due to secularism and cultural shifts. Three fundamental core values of movements 1. The Spirit: Movements are works of the Holy Spirit. We can't take credit for movements. It's all the Spirit turning up and working in people's lives. 2. The Word of God: The Word is number one. It isn't a commodity and we can't slice and dice it. Jesus himself is the Word and He spoke about it being planted in us (Parable of the Sower). We are transformed if we respond in obedience to God's Word. 3. Mission: If you follow Jesus, you're on mission. Jesus is God's mission and we find ourselves following him to the lost and broken. The DMM Wheel Dave shares about Pray, Go, Disciple and Multiply - what he calls the ‘DMM Wheel' which has been a helpful framework for walking out the essential values of movement. Personal Challenge Dave encourages us to examine our own hearts and consider the soil of our lives. How is God calling you, and what are the obstacles or distractions that may prevent you from following His call? The episode ends with a challenge to persevere in the race God has set before us, emphasising the importance of mentorship and being shaped by God's heart through prayer and obedience. May this talk encourage you to reflect on the deeper aspects of your heart as God invites us to join Him in bringing movements to life!

In July 1950, Avi Shlaim, only five, and his family were forced into exile, fleeing from their beloved Iraq into the new state of Israel. Now the rump of a once flourishing community of over 150,000, dating back 2,600 years, has dwindled to single figures. For many, this tells the story of the timeless clash of the Arab and Jewish civilisations, the heroic mission of Zionism to rescue Eastern Jews from their backwards nations, and unceasing persecution as the fate and history of Jewish people. Avi Shlaim tears up this script. His mother had many Muslim friends in Baghdad, but no Zionist ones. The Iraqi Jewish community, once celebrated for its ancient heritage and rich culture, was sprayed with DDT upon arrival in Israel. As anti-Semitism gathered pace in Iraq, the Zionist underground may have inflamed it - deliberately. Three Worlds: Memoirs of an Arab-Jew (Oneworld, 2024) celebrates the disappearing heritage of Arab-Jews - caught in the crossfire of secular ideologies. Avi Shlaim was born in Baghdad and grew up in Israel. He is now a Professor of International Relations at St Antony's College, Oxford. His previous books include the critically acclaimed The Iron Wall and he writes regularly for the Guardian, Middle East Eye and other outlets. Learn more about your ad choices. About the lecture: In December 1989, in officially recognizing the authenticity of the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact's secret protocol, the USSR Congress of People's Deputies evinced the hope that the globally divided historical consciousness of the Cold War would be replaced with a new conception of the past, reflecting “a whole and mutually interdependent world and increasing mutual understanding.” While there was cause for hope in the immediate post-Soviet years that such a “flat earth” of shared accounts of history—the foundation for a world of shared political values—would emerge, subsequent decades led to renewed, often weaponized fragmentation of historical vision across political borders, and especially at the border separating Europe from the Russian Federation. However, in distinction from the Cold War opposition of ideologically differentiated accounts of history, current standoffs relate to the application of the most basic terms—empire, nation, fascist, genocide, socialist, liberal—which are applied on both sides of borders and conflict zones, yet with opposed significance. Rather than a confrontation of historical ideologies, this is a standoff of historical ontologies. In this presentation of his recently published book "Border Conditions: Russian-Speaking Latvians Between World Orders", Platt will examine the etiology of this ontological conflict, as it emerges from the experience of a population that has been located since the end of the Cold War in the interstitial zone at the borders of Europe: Russian-speaking Latvians. Their world, riven by contradiction, offers a vantage, as through a keyhole, toward globally shared conditions of historical and political incoherence and conflict at the start of the twenty-first century. About the speaker: Kevin M. F. Platt is Professor of Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His scholarly work focuses on Russian and East European culture, history, poetry, and fiction. He is author or editor of a number of scholarly books, among them "Terror and Greatness: Ivan and Peter as Russian Myths" (Cornell, 2011), "Global Russian Cultures" (Wisconsin, 2019), and, most recently, "Border Conditions: Russian-Speaking Latvians Between World Orders" (Cornell/NIUP, 2024). His translations of Russian and Latvian poetry have appeared in "World Literature Today:, "Jacket2", "Fence", and other journals. He is the founder and organizer of the poetry translation symposium Your Language My Ear. His current project is entitled “Cultural Arbitrage in the Age of Three Worlds.”

This is a video essay from this article originally published at Sola Ecclesia In this episode of the Plain Speech Podcast, Michael Clary discusses cultural engagement in modern times from a pastoral perspective. Over the past decade, pastors have faced unprecedented moral and emotional challenges in their ministry environments. This episode discusses the 'three worlds of evangelicalism' as proposed by Aaron Renn, detailing how American society's perception of Christianity has shifted from positive, to neutral, to negative. The script provides a detailed analysis of the challenges pastors face today and suggests two approaches: appeasement or engagement, emphasizing the importance of courage and biblical fidelity in a hostile cultural climate. It also offers practical advice for pastors on how to effectively lead their congregations in these turbulent times. 00:00 Introduction: Navigating Modern Ministry Challenges 00:24 The Three Worlds of Evangelicalism 01:02 The Shift to a Negative World 01:45 Pastoral Realities in the Negative World 02:55 The Influence of Social Media on Christian Thought 03:51 Recognizing Cultural Shifts in Congregations 05:20 The Dilemma of Addressing Controversial Issues 09:01 Strategies for Faithful Pastoral Leadership 15:36 Counting the Cost of Engagement 20:10 Conclusion: Encouragement for Faithful Shepherds
On Episode 73 of the Daebak K-Rambles Podcast, the Drama Trio is on deck! Jess is joined by friends Caitlin from NoSleep4Dramas Blog & Podcast and Liliana from the Tea & Soju Podcast to review Eternal Love of Dream (aka Three Lives, Three Worlds, The Pillow Book), starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Vengo Gao. Jumping straight into spoilers, Jess, Caitlin, and Liliana talk through this ultimately disappointing 2020 sequel to Eternal Love (aka Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms). After coming together to review the original Eternal Love on the Tea & Soju Podcast, the trio have trouble doling out praise in this much-anticipated watch, discussing the rampant pacing issues, confusing retcons from the first show, the displaced timelines in comparison to the source novel, the lack of character development, (sadly) annoying portrayal of our lovesick fox, and more frustrating writing that overshadowed the acting and chemistry from these beloved leads. Ron Hogen Green, Sensei - ZMM - 5/23/24 - From The True Dharma Eye, Case 75 - Yantou's "Sit Still" - How do we respond to life's complications? Sitting in stillness is the simple practice, but in itself can become a hiding place. The Three Worlds—form, formlessness and desire—all arrive together at once, so how do we practice stillness in the midst of it all? Using a koan from Master Yantou, Hogen Sensei reminds us that true freedom, to let go and be totally alive to the suchness of this moment, is within our capacity to let go of fixed views about anything.
