Today’s guest, Joey Redner, is special to me on a variety of levels. He’s a brewery founder I’ve long admired, having started and grown Cigar City Brewing into one of the strongest brands of the second wave of craft brewing—and having done so with very little experience. Instead, he used his instincts as a writer to navigate the business from a journalist’s perspective before he ever invested in concrete and steel. Something about that background always seemed to express itself in a worldview that I found quite rare within the world of craft brewing—and which has proven effective in unique ways. Joey always seems to be an active observer—forever a note-taker and learner—and constantly sizes up people, opportunities, and the direction the narrative is going next. I first met him on a white-water raft going down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon along with a host of other brewery owners. That trip was part of the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp bus tour, which went cross-country from Chico to Asheville in 2014. From those wild times to more practical endeavors—like working alongside the strategy and marketing teams in Florida as they launched Cigar City Lager, or scaling up toward an eventual acquisition and alignment with the CANarchy group—all have contributed to my respect and admiration for Joey and his leadership. But we’ve never sat down to record. So why now? Well, in addition to being curious about the implications of his strategic alignment with CANarchy, and its unique resilience during the pandemic, I also recently learned that Joey had once suffered from a life-threatening coronavirus infection himself—years ago before anyone had really heard of it. And that experience, as scary and severe as it was, has given him a very unique vantage point for the social, cultural, and political environment we’re all finding our way through right now—because for him, none of those factors existed. There were no anti-maskers or shutdowns or government stimulus and temporary alcohol laws we all associate with the virus now. For him it was radically simple—it was life or death. This is Joey Redner of Cigar City Brewing and CANarchy. Listen in.

Our brewing buddy Thomas Vincent is back this week, and he is talking about his new venture, Nazz’d Brew Works! Thomas relates the progress on the new space in Graham, NC and fills us in on other things he is working on, including a podcast! Then he helps us taste some fine beers: Jenn’s own special Sierra Nevada Beer Camp 224, Adroit Theory I ADAM, and Sycamore Pakalolo! The US government dysfunction leads the news via WTVR reporting that a DC craft brewery is suing the government, saying the shutdown is hurting its new beer sales. Next we have The USA Today revealing that Bud Light is adding nutrition facts to label, and that could shake up craft beer, while VinePair believes that wheat wine is the most extreme craft beer style you haven’t been drinking. We follow with Techworld introducing the craft beer-obsessed techies disrupting the brewing industry, then Travel + Leisure visits  Disneyland’s very first craft brewery, and we wind up the week with Brew Your Own (thanks @evanrnhall!) showing you how to brew Raw Ale! Last week we asked “what do you think of #FlagshipFebruary? Will you join in? What brewery/flagships will you be supporting?” This week we want to know “what’s your take on nutrition labeling on beer? Do you think it will have any impact? And will it change what you drink?” We so love hearing from you! Season 3, Episode 23 – This week, we follow suit with all of the other beer podcasts and try the six beers from the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp 12 (six?) pack. This week, we’re going to beer camp! Not really, but we’re gonna imagine we are by drinking the six beers from this year’s Sierra Nevada Brewing Company Beer Camp collaboration variety pack.  Sierra Nevada Beer Camp 2016 Our very own Greg Nagel went to Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp. For a while, it was an actual event that select homebrewers from all over the country participated in at Sierra Nevada’s brewery in Chico, California. Each team would concoct a recipe and brew it as a pilot batch. Following that and some recipe tweaks, the final recipes would then be brewed at scale by Sierra Nevada for the variety pack.  This year, the Beer Camp variety pack is comprised of 12 beers, two bottles from six different regional brewery collaborations. The breweries involved are well known within their local markets, as well as with hardcore beer geeks. Expectations are always high when it comes to big brewery collaborations, and rightly so.  Does the Beer Camp variety pack meet expectations? Listen and find out! BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 2, Episode 24 – This week, we’re visiting one of the many breweries along the Hop Highway, Belching Beaver Brewery in Vista, CA. Belching Beaver is one of many breweries along the legendary Hop Highway in San Diego, California, which is home to many other notable breweries like Stone Brewing Co., Port Brewing Company, Toolbox Brewing Company, and Iron Fist Brewing Co.. Opening just three years ago, they’ve already set themselves apart with their unique takes on classic styles. They really skyrocketed in popularity with the release of their delicious Peanut Butter Milk Stout.  Belching Beaver Brewery Beers (Rabid Beaver Rye IPA not pictured) During the course of the episode, we sample six different beers from the brewery, and discuss them with Belching Beaver brewer, Sean Laidlaw. Sean started in the beer industry at Mission Brewery after returning from a stint at Sierra Nevada Beer Camp, which is also where he met our own Greg Nagel. After working at Mission Brewery for just over a year as an assistant brewer, he decided to just ship and start brewing at Belching Beaver.  Sean Laidlaw, Brewer at Belching Beaver Brewery The first two beers we try on the show are Me So Honey and Beaver’s Milk, both of which are very well crafted and awesome beers. But when we get to their coconut and pineapple infused IPA Great Lei, our minds are blown. Typically, coconut is used in stouts and porters. The roasted notes and tropical sweetness from the coconut really lends itself well to those styles. But when the coconut is paired with pineapple and the right variety of matching hops in the IPA style, it works amazingly well. For those who aren’t keen to IPA, this beer introduces hops and bitterness in a very approachable way by masking the bitterness with the pineapple while enhancing the fruit characteristics of the hops. The coconut really takes it over the top to make it a refreshing and tropical experience. Belching Beaver Brewery – Hop Highway IPA Next up is a beer whose name is a tribute to San Diego’s stretch of beer-legend highway, Hop Highway IPA. India Pale Ale in San Diego is nothing new, so for a new brewery to launch with an IPA named after such a legendary stretch of road, it’d better be great. This beer delivers. Made with Citra, Nelson, and Galaxy hops, this beer delivers lasting, clean bitterness and tropical hop bite. IPAs these days tend to trend more toward less hop bitterness with massive hop aroma and flavor. This beer pays tribute to the classic style, but also delivers the modern characteristics that IPA lovers today demand.  Greg Nagel Belching Beaver recently announced that they will be canning their beers, which is music to our ears. Cans are super-portable and protect beer very well from light and oxidation. Belching Beaver is currently using a mobile canning line, but plans on installing their on canning line when the new brewery in Oceanside, California is built. We can’t thank Belching Beaver enough for having us at the brewery. Next time you’re in North County, pay them a visit. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.  Links to things from this week’s episode:S2/E24 Show OutlineBeers from this show: Me So Honey, Beaver’s Milk, Great Lei, Hop Highway IPA, Rabid Beaver Rye IPA, and Old Smokestack. This episode was definitely a Rhett Smith Podcast first. My brother-in-law Drew Sams and I went for a long 10 mile trail run earlier in the day, and spent our recovery time hanging outside in his backyard jacuzzi. And so we decided to just record the conversation there. So you are going to hear some helicopters and sirens in the background...and we are a bit delirious by the end of the podcast (I guess two hours in a jacuzzi isn't that smart when you are tired).   But this is a great episode and we explore a lot of interesting things. I first met Drew back in 2001 when he was a USC senior and I had just taken the position of college ministry intern at Bel Air Presbyterian Church. Drew and I became really good friends that senior year of his, eventually leading my wife and I (then girlfriend) to set her sister and him up on a blind date. That blind date turned into marriage in 2006. And throughout the years our paths have crossed in other ways as well, whether at Fuller Theological Seminary, or both being on staff at the same time at Bel Air Presbyterian Church. Drew completed his Master of Divinity at Fuller, and then studied under Len Sweet at George Fox University, receiving a Doctorate of Ministry in Semiotics and Future Studies.   Drew is a fascinating guy (and I'm not just saying that since we are related now) with a lot of interests. He loves being outdoors and is an avid surfer and snowboarder. He also loves to try new hobbies, usually with a passion that leads to him turning that hobby into quite the craft. As we talk about in the podcast, Drew has become quite the coffee connoisseur, which has helped lead him in some really interesting directions of hospitality. He also has become quite the beer maker over the last 5 years as well, winning several first places in the Los Angeles County Fair in 2012 and 2013. as well as an invite to the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp, where he helped create a beer (Sleight of Hand) that sold in stores nationally. He created a great entry video called My Grandfather's Stopwatch. You can check it out here and then scroll to the class of 2012. In this podcast we explore: Albert Borgmann's device paradigm the importance of being engaged in process and not just final outcome. how Drew's love of coffee and beer making helped him create space for hospitality. ways that people can engage in process and make space for hospitality in their lives. Beer Camp Across America is a multi-weekend path of beer festivals, a rolling tour that will cover 4,800 miles, celebrating the collaborative spirit of the craft brewing community with the fans that have buoyed its success. There’ll be seven stops—in cities with thriving craft beer cultures—moving geographically west to east, much like the craft movement has historically spread.
