In the library of a theological seminary, a researcher opens Eusebius's Church History and traces the bishops of Jerusalem - the mother church, the apostolic see of sees. He finds fifteen names spanning nearly two centuries. Marcus. Cassian. Publius. Maximus. Julian. Gaius. Symmachus. And eight more.No biographies. No letters. No sermons. No doctrines. No martyrdom accounts. Not a single quotation from their enemies. Fifteen bishops, two hundred years - and a perfect, surgical silence.Rome, Antioch, and Alexandria - churches that suffered the same persecutions - all preserved rich documentary traditions. Only Jerusalem is a vacuum. Not a damaged record. An erasure. This is Part 1 of "Sleight of Hand, Sleight of Scripture" - a documentary series from Pre-Nicene Perspective, hosted by Darren Kelama, based on the 2026 paper "The Myth of the Jerusalem Continuity" by Chancellor A.W. Mitchell (Journal of Pre-Nicene Christian Studies). In this episode, we walk the crime scene: Aelia Capitolina, the pagan colony Hadrian built on the rubble of Jerusalem in AD 135. Banned from the city on pain of death were not only Jews - but Jewish scriptures. Inside those walls, the only Christian canon that could legally exist was one without the Old Testament: the Evangelion and the Apostolikon. Hadrian, unwittingly, granted the unalloyed Pauline gospel a two-hundred-year sanctuary. And we meet the first ghost: Marcus, the first Gentile bishop of Aelia Capitolina, whom Mitchell identifies as the first Christian bishop in the Pauline sense - leader of a church whose Bible had no Torah, whose God was not Yahweh, whose throne was the mother church itself, and whose treasury held the accumulation of Paul's diaspora collection. ▶ PART 2 DROPS NEXT WEEK—————————⏱ CHAPTERS—————————0:00 — Cold Open: Fifteen Names, Fifteen Ghosts1:52 — The Question That Launched a 1,700-Year Cold Case2:20 — Welcome to Pre-Nicene Perspective (Series Intro)2:48 — Aelia Capitolina (AD 135)4:12 — Possessing the Septuagint Was a Capital Crime5:08 — The Only Christians Who Could Survive in Aelia6:04 — The Mitchell Thesis (2026 Paper)7:00 — Part III — The Red Herrings8:24 — Claim 1: "The Records Were Lost"9:48 — Claim 2: Irenaeus Never Quotes Them10:44 — Claim 3: "Jerusalem Was Always Yahwist"11:40 — Part IV — The Investigation Begins12:36 — The First Christian Bishop in the Pauline Sense13:04 — The Treasury of the Mother Church13:52 — The Apostolikon — Paul's War Report14:28 — Marcus Resolves to Act (Cliffhanger — Part 2 Next Week)—————————ACADEMIC SOURCES & FURTHER READING—————————
Fifteen bishops. Two hundred years. Zero surviving words. In the mother church of Christianity—Jerusalem—there is a two-century black hole. Fifteen bishops ruled the holy city between 135 AD and 325 AD, yet they left behind no writings, no sermons, and no biographies. They are the "ghost bishops" of Jerusalem. But what if this absolute silence isn't an accident of history? What if it's the evidence of a cover-up?In this explosive premiere of the Sleight of Hand, Sleight of Scripture series on Pre-Nicene Perspective, host Presbyter Darren Kelama reopens a 1,700-year cold case and uncovers a forensic smoking gun that rewrites the history of the early church. We travel back to 135 AD. Emperor Hadrian has just crushed the Bar Kokhba revolt, banned all Jews from Jerusalem on pain of death, and rebuilt the city as a pagan colony. In this new Roman city, possessing the Torah or worshipping Yahweh is a capital crime. So, what kind of Christian community can survive in a city where the Old Testament is illegal?Only one: A church whose Bible contains no Jewish text. A church whose God is not Yahweh. A church we now call Marcionite. In this episode, we investigate: How Hadrian's ban on Judaism structurally evicted Yahweh from Jerusalem and inadvertently created the first purely Christian episcopate. The inevitable, history-altering meeting between Jerusalem's first Gentile bishop, Marcus, and the shipmaster Marcion of Sinope. The 200,000 sesterces sent to Rome—and why returning the fortune was the ultimate receipt of a rejected embassy.
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that The World's 50 Best Bars is based more on popularity than on experience. In reality, at its core, it's very much an experience-driven list. It's important to understand that guest shifts and pop-ups are not eligible for voting. We always say you should deliver the best possible experience to every guest who walks through your door. Try to see the award as a by-product of that hard work, rather than the end goal itself,” says Emma Sleight, Head of Content and Creative at the prestigious The World's 50 Best Bars ranking.Líbí se Vám tento díl? In this episode, I welcome back Mia Hughes — director of Genspect Canada, senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, and one of the sharpest writers on the gender scandal — to dig into the framework she calls "trans as an extreme overvalued belief." Mia walks us through the history of the overvalued idea, from Carl Wernicke in 1892 to Paul McHugh's post-9/11 application of the concept to ideologically driven violence, and explains why this psychiatric category — sitting between delusion and obsession — finally makes sense of the trans phenomenon in a way no other diagnosis ever has.We trace the Dutch origins of medical transition in the 1970s, the moment psychiatry "gave up" on these patients, and how WPATH's 2010 de-psychopathologization statement re-engineered a mental illness into a celebrated identity — triggering, in Mia's view, the social contagion that followed. I bring my clinical lens to the conversation, exploring transference and countertransference, neuroplasticity, the hijacking of dopamine through "gender euphoria," and why so many therapists get this wrong in both directions. We close on Mia's anorexia parallel and what it teaches us about loosening the grip of a pathological belief — gently, indirectly, and without the parent in the line of fire.Mia Hughes specializes in researching pediatric gender medicine, psychiatric epidemics, social contagion and the intersection of trans rights and women's rights. Send a textFrom an NLP perspective, what are some of the common ways we get stuck in experiences or behavior patterns because we aren't exercising as much conscious control as we really have? 1. Holding Onto Limiting Beliefs Tips to overcome this:An easy way to begin to loosen the effects of a belief is to do Sleight of Mouth. Ep 51, 53.Take the belief statement with a cause/effect or meaning, and write out the pattern of SOM to change it. This will weaken the belief and make it open to changing into something more positive. Example: I never get to save money because I spend all that I make.Your intention is to be responsible and have money for a rainy day.Has there ever been a time when you were able to save money?Saving a little is better than saving nothing at all.2. Engaging in Negative Self-Talk and Internal DialogueTips overcome this:Monitor your self-talk. Change any negative move-away statement to something that moves towards what you want. Negative self-talk is the result of neuro-grooving. The thought becomes habituated. Change the language to what you want. Punch or Meta reframes are good for this. I can't change my circumstances. You can change that thought!Conflict resolution between what you say and something more empowering.3. Failing to Set Clear, Positive OutcomesTips overcome this:This is the most important principle of getting what you want. A goal or outcome must be stated in positive, active language, self-initiated and maintained, ecological, and demonstrated in see, hear, feel. I'm saving $15 a week. I'm putting it in a place where it is more difficult to access. I am doing this for myself or by myself. I may lose a couple of cups of coffee a week. I see myself putting the money in a special place or transferring it to another account. I see the amount increasing every week. I tell myself that this is easier than I thought it was going to be. I feel a sense of well-being in my chest and smile. 4. Assigning Disempowering Meanings to ExperiencesTips overcome this:Look at something in a different way, and what does that mean? Change positions to look at something. What else could this mean? Ask someone else, a friend or mentor, what else could it mean? Read the opinions of others and widen your perspective.Talk to someone you respect and trust for a different way of looking at something. And write a story about the meaning and experience. Then rewrite it with a more positive perspective.5. Poor Management of Emotional StatesTips overcome this:Regular self-care and maintenanceVisualize yourself in happy, calm, confident statesAnchoring negative emotions with positive ones.Conflict resolution between the present state and the desired state These are all brief suggestions. Remember that certain problems, especially those that come up over and over again, may need some work with me. Especially dealing with belief issues and meaning perspective, having someone who can guide you through these saves time, effort, and yes, even money. NLP is not necessarily self-applied. Some problems may seem simple but have more complex underlying causes. Support the show

What is magic? Rabbits out of hats? Card tricks? Someone in a sparkly outfit getting sawn in half? Well, yes, but it's also about defying expectations. To psychologist and magician Dr Gustav Kuhn, founder of the UK's only MAGIC Lab, it's about causing you to question what you think to be real. Having practiced magic from a young age, he embarked on a psychology degree to try and get a better understanding of what made a good trick, or a good performance. Thing is, he realized along the way that a lot of the big questions in psychology are addressed by key concepts in magic. Sleight of hand, card forces, and misdirection – it all challenges our attention and exploits our weak spots, making us believe what we see, and see what they want us to. In this holiday bonus episode, join us as we explore the many ways in which magic is being used as a tool for science, encompassing some of the biggest challenges of our time, from cybercrime to misinformation.

It's all about your performance | Satan's Sleight of HandGrace, Not Performance: Freedom in Christ – Romans 3:19–28This Sunday at Divine Savior Church Doral (9:30 a.m.), Pastor Caleb concludes our impactful series, “Satan's Sleight of Hand,” with a message that hits close to home: “It's all about your performance.”Everywhere we turn—school, work, relationships, social media, even inside the church—we feel the pressure to perform, to prove our worth, to measure up. But that's one of the oldest lies of the enemy. The truth of the Gospel sets us free: our worth isn't determined by what we do but by what Christ has done for us.In Romans 3:19–28, the Apostle Paul reminds us that righteousness is not something we earn, but something we receive. Through Christ's finished work on the cross, we are declared righteous, forgiven, and loved — not because of our performance, but because of His perfect grace.Come and experience the assurance of God's grace through His Word and Sacrament. Find rest for your soul, freedom from guilt, and the deep joy of knowing your identity is secure in Jesus Christ.✨ Join us in person or online — as we close out “Satan's Sleight of Hand” with a message that will help you let go of striving and rest in God's amazing grace.Service Times:Saturday 5pm (Bilingual)Sunday 9:30am (English)Sunday 11:30am (Spanish)Support the showMoved to give? http://dschurch.link/givedoralFor more info about our church please visit our website: https://divinesaviorchurch.com/dscdor/
We're told from every angle—school, work, even church—that our worth depends on how we perform. But this Reformation Sunday, we remember the truth that set the Church free: you are saved not by performance, but by grace. As we celebrate 175 years of God's grace in the WELS, we're not bragging on ourselves—we're boasting in Christ alone.Support the show~ Changing lives with Jesus! We all crave happiness—but what kind? The kind that fades the moment life gets hard? Or the kind that endures even in pain? This week, God challenges the popular belief that his highest goal is our short-term comfort. In Hebrews 11, we see an example of someone who could have chosen comfort, ease, and status—but instead chose something better. Through this, God shows us that true happiness isn't found in chasing pleasure, but in walking with him toward something eternal.Support the show~ Changing lives with Jesus! On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty and guest Doug O'Brien—master storyteller, hypnotherapist, bestselling author, and NLP trainer—break down how our inner narratives drive mental and emotional health. Doug explains the structure of beliefs (cause → effect → meaning), how NLP, hypnosis, and Havening Techniques interrupt limiting patterns, and why rapid change is possible when we learn to reframe, reprogram, and retell our story. Practical tools include morning questions, state management, and belief reframes (Sleight of Mouth). About the guest : Doug O'Brien is a hypnotherapist, international NLP trainer, and author of The User's Guide to Storytelling and The User's Guide to Sleight of Mouth. He teaches practical neuro-linguistic methods, hypnosis, and Havening to help people shift beliefs and behavior effectively. Key takeaways: Your story shapes your state. We live inside inner representations; narratives can be chains or catalysts for change. Beliefs have structure. Most beliefs follow cause → effect → meaning; change the linkage and you change the belief. Name it to change it. First step: realize “it's a story,” not absolute reality—then author a better one. NLP is a user manual for the brain. Understand your “neuro-linguistics,” and you can reprogram patterns toward desired outcomes. Morning Questions reset focus. Ask: What am I happy/excited/grateful for? Why? How does it feel? Attention directs state; state drives behavior. Havening for trauma. As a psychosensory method, Havening supports safety and can facilitate rapid, lasting change for encoded traumatic responses. Self-work vs. professional help. Many shifts are DIY; for legitimate trauma, work with trained practitioners. Evidence through examples. Compare yourself to role models who share your traits; swap limiting labels for empowering identities. Rapid change is possible. Challenge the story that “change takes years.” With the right tool and readiness, breakthroughs can be immediate. Storytelling persuades. Whether with kids, teams, or audiences, clear stories engage imagination and drive behavior. Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at approximately 12:23 p.m. Mountain Time, while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was in the middle of a live event for his “American Comeback Tour,” engaging in a public Q&A session under a tent labeled “Prove Me Wrong.” Just moments after responding to a student’s question, a single shot was fired from a rooftop roughly 200 yards away, striking him in the neck. Most philosophers and religious leaders throughout history have suggested that contentment is the secret to happiness. And yet, modern research also seems to suggest that $34k/year income is a threshold, and $75k/year is another income threshold for happiness. So which is it? Can we be content without X amount of dollars? Should we be content where we're at and never pursue more money? What can we do with the money we have that will bring greatest joy?Support the show~ Changing lives with Jesus! Facebook | YouTubeInstagram @dscsienna

Researcher Robert Bellah wrote in Habits of the Heart that 81% of Americans believe that you should come to religious conclusions APART from any religious organization. In other words, the majority of people believe you don't find God in community. They think you find God on your own. The reality is that Americans today, including many Christians, have reported that they've never been lonelier. Gen Z 18-22 year-olds are the loneliest, followed by Millennials. Why? Because we're trying to do life and faith on our own terms, not cemented into Church community.Support the show~ Changing lives with Jesus! Facebook | YouTubeInstagram @dscsienna

Here's a question I can't stop thinking about: Is “sense of purpose” the true secret ingredient that makes occupational therapy unique and effective? I ran a survey of my OT peers earlier this year, and I was shocked that 17% of respondents selected “sense of purpose” as the main treatment area they address—second only to “daily activities,” which is what I traditionally think of as our bread and butter. This tells me that, on the ground, a surprising number of therapists see “addressing sense of purpose” as their most effective intervention. The article we are looking at today reveals why sense of purpose may be such a profound lever to pull. (Hint: It is associated with many health benefits!) After we review the article, we are excited to welcome to the podcast one of occupational therapy's leading thinkers about our role in sense of purpose: Dr. Alix Sleight. Together, we'll unpack the science behind sense of purpose—and the small and large ways you can address it in your OT sessions. Do all good movies require a sequel? We ask that question for two recent releases, Den of Thieves: Pantera (2025) and The Accountant 2 (2025). The original films were very enjoyable and exciting, but is there enough meat on the bone for a second trip? Why is it so hard to follow up a good film? Commissioner Vicki Reed joins Dr. Sandie Morgan to discuss the intersection of juvenile justice and child welfare, highlighting the importance of collaboration, care, and community in supporting vulnerable youth and preventing their exploitation. Vicki Reed Vicki Reed has dedicated her career to child welfare and juvenile justice, with over two decades of experience working with system-involved youth. She holds a degree in law enforcement and a master's in criminal justice, and has been a strong advocate for vulnerable children in both public and private sectors. Vicki has served as a juvenile probation officer, the director of a youth-serving agency, and has helped shape state-level training for child welfare workers in Kentucky. Beyond her advocacy and service as Juvenile Justice Commissioner of Kentucky, she is also an accomplished author. In her previous appearance on this podcast (episode 246), Vicki discussed her novel The Car Thief. In this episode, she shares insights from her latest novel, Sleight of Hand, which also draws from her extensive experience working with youth. Key Points Vicki Reed shares how an unexpected opportunity and sense of calling led her to come out of retirement to serve as Kentucky's Juvenile Justice Commissioner. She emphasizes the critical difference between juvenile justice and adult corrections, noting that punitive approaches fail with youth and that rehabilitation, mental health support, education, and pro-social activities are far more effective. The high cost of long-term incarceration underscores the need for early intervention and supportive programming for at-risk youth. Reed discusses how negative placement experiences in foster care can reinforce harmful behaviors, while positive, stable placements with appropriate support can change life trajectories. Her novels, The Car Thief and Sleight of Hand, serve as creative tools to educate readers about the juvenile justice and child welfare systems, illustrating how caring adults make a significant difference in a young person's life. The character of Alex in Sleight of Hand, who experiences 64 placements, highlights the systemic issues facing youth in foster care and the importance of wraparound services. Vicki introduces the concept of “automatic adult responses” and stresses the value of reframing interactions with youth, drawing on insights from expert Charlie Applestein and his approach from No Such Thing as a Bad Kid. Pro-social activities, such as music lessons, art therapy, or simple childhood experiences like flying a kite, play a key role in building competencies and self-worth for vulnerable youth. Collaboration across systems—child welfare, juvenile justice, and mental health—is vital, as these sectors often serve the same youth but in siloed ways. Reed advocates for dual status teams like those in Indiana, which require collaborative planning for youth involved in both child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Children in congregate care (group homes or residential placements) are at higher risk for exploitation, making family-based care the preferred model whenever possible. Reed calls for greater community engagement, suggesting ways individuals can support youth through fostering, volunteering as court advocates (CASA), or contributing to foster care organizations.
