With lots of public backlash building against tipping, Adam, Joanna, and Zach discuss why "tip creep" is hurting folks who actually rely on tips for their wages, and why adding lots of different charges and service fees onto a restaurant or bar check is the wrong way to convey that employees are being taken care of. AB InBev has GHOST Energy. Molson Coors has ZOA Energy. Heck…Monster Energy acquired CANarchy craft brewing collective. And now the third-largest craft brewer in America, Sierra Nevada Brewing, has acquired a minority stake in the better-for-you energy drinks brand RIOT Energy. If you haven't picked up on it…brewing companies are targeting pockets of beverage industry growth potential to replace the “beer occasions” that aren't as prevalent anymore. The aptly named “Beyond Beer” strategy has ushered in a new era of category convergence. Well…Sierra Nevada Brewing seems committed long-term to diversification, because this RIOT Energy investment also accompanies the buildout of a massive “CanDo Innovation Centre” that will produce and package products outside of conventional beer. This all makes me wonder though…when will major players like Constellation Brands, Heineken, and Boston Beer Company make a play into the energy drink space? This week Bob and I get together with the gang from Necronomipod podcast to discuss the year in beer for 2022. From the beginning of the show Hijinx ensues. During the show we discussed Stone successfully defeating Molson Coors in court, and then we immediately talk about Sapporo purchasing Stone brewing for pennies on the dollar. We also discuss another acquisition that occurred in September when Monster Energy Drink purchased CanArchy. We reveal the 2022 top 10 beers checked in according to Untappd, and we also chat about the top 10 breweries that received 5-star reviews, and the top 10 beer styles checked in for 2022. During the episode we sampled beers from Stone, 3 Floyds, Yuengling, my home brewery, and then we cracked open the most God awful tasting hard soda from Mountain Dew. Overall, it was a great episode and a lot of fun recording with Dave, Ian, and Mike. Cheers to 2022 and here's hoping for an awesome 2023. Make sure to follow Necronomipod on FB and IG @necronomipod. Friendly bets have become popular under the backdrop of the Super Bowl. Mayors of cities that host game-bound teams engage in banter designed to boost tourism, friends take on each other, and small businesses go toe to toe and show off team pride.  Breweries are no different. This year as the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California we welcome on three breweries engaged in such a bet.  The terms of the bet weren't firmed up before recording this show and slowly get hashed out, if not completely resolved by the end. Spoiler alert: there will be costumes.  On the show this week, joining via zoom from their respective breweries are Lynne Weaver, the founder and owner of Three Weavers, a brewery in Inglewood, that, as you'll hear, was briefly part of Canarchy, the brewery group recently purchased by Monster Beverages. She brought the company back to independence before that deal was closed.  She's joined by her brewery neighbor Teo Hunter, a co-founder of Crowns and Hops, a brewery that started on social media, gained a grass roots following and has been working hard to bring change to the beer industry through action. And representing Cincinnati is Matthew Steinke the director of sales at Rhinegeist Brewing, one of the state's larger breweries and a source of local beer pride. There are barbs and jabs thrown throughout this show, and they wind up steering the topics, and sharing experiences. We start off with the run up to the game, and Inglewood, which is hosting the game for the biggest night in American sports.  Editor's note: An earlier version of this episode misidentified the Ohio team playing in the Super Bowl. The game-bound team is the Cincinnati Bengals not the Cleveland Browns. Speaking of Katie Mather as both a peer, and as a friend, she is someone who continually impresses me. I first came across her work through her old blog, called The Snap and The Hiss, and was enamoured with her writing from the very first sentence. Since then she's gone from strength to strength, producing a series of wonderfully evocative articles, and taking on editorial roles both at new wine publication Glug and here at Pellicle.Having her on board as a regular contributor alone was a thrill, and if you read her pieces such as this one on the nostalgia of burger vans, or her epic taxonomy of the British bread roll (the most read feature we've ever published) you'll soon understand why. Taking her on as an associate editor deepened her connection to the work we publish. What editors do largely happens behind the curtain, but you can see her influence on pieces such as Josh Barrie's profile of a very special branch of Londis in North London, or in my own feature about Sheffield's Brewery of St. Mars of the Desert. We are so stoked to get to work with her, and can't wait to see what else she brings to our little magazine. But the depth of Katie's talents don't end there. In late 2019, she and her husband Tom finally got the keys to their bar, Corto. Based in their hometown of Clitheroe, situated in Lancashire's Ribble Valley, Corto is part of a new wave of bars slowly emerging within the United Kingdom. Inspired by the food and drink culture of Northern Spain, the bar merges the concepts of craft beer, natural wine, cider and delectable small plates into something that is far greater than the sum of its parts. I'm biased, but you should visit. You'll be planning your next trip there before you've got halfway through your first pint, or whatever's by the glass on that particular day.As a bonus, before the interview I dig into some of the bigger beer news that's occurred lately. From Monster acquiring the Canarchy collective of breweries in the United States, to Lion announcing it is to sell UK acquisitions Fourpure and Magic Rock, there's a lot to dig into. And that's before I take the chance to chew through the BBC's recent documentary on Scottish brewery BrewDog, and why I think its behaviour reflects badly on the entire British craft beer scene. It's a bumper episode, and I hope you enjoy listening. Don't forget to hit subscribe and leave a rating if you've got a second, as this will help more folks find the show. You might also see we've got a new logo thanks to our resident designer Tida Bradshaw. It felt like it was time to give the podcast a little spruce up, so we hope you like that. This episode of The Pellicle Podcast is sponsored by Hand & Heart. Monster Beverage Corporation, maker of Monster Energy drinks, is purchasing CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective, a portfolio of craft beer and hard seltzer brands, for $330 million in cash. What? Why? OK. This shouldn't be that big of a surprise for those of you that consume my content regularly. The deal gives Monster Beverage Corporation a foothold in the alcohol market through a nationwide network of breweries and distribution connections. This has been a goal the energy drink company has telegraphed since 2019 when CEO Rodney Sacks stated on an earnings call that they had an appetite for the alcoholic beverage market. So, why did Monster Beverage buy and not build or partner to make its alcohol dreams become a reality? However things play out in the future, this Monster Energy and Canarchy deal will certainly be an early case study to the converging beverage landscapes. Depending on success, it will likely set off a domino effect of other deeper strategic partnerships and acquisitions. While bookstore bars have usually been bookstores first with OK coffee, and both wine and snacks from a box - things are changing. Good Beer Hunting

Today’s guest, Joey Redner, is special to me on a variety of levels. He’s a brewery founder I’ve long admired, having started and grown Cigar City Brewing into one of the strongest brands of the second wave of craft brewing—and having done so with very little experience. Instead, he used his instincts as a writer to navigate the business from a journalist’s perspective before he ever invested in concrete and steel. Something about that background always seemed to express itself in a worldview that I found quite rare within the world of craft brewing—and which has proven effective in unique ways. Joey always seems to be an active observer—forever a note-taker and learner—and constantly sizes up people, opportunities, and the direction the narrative is going next. I first met him on a white-water raft going down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon along with a host of other brewery owners. That trip was part of the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp bus tour, which went cross-country from Chico to Asheville in 2014. From those wild times to more practical endeavors—like working alongside the strategy and marketing teams in Florida as they launched Cigar City Lager, or scaling up toward an eventual acquisition and alignment with the CANarchy group—all have contributed to my respect and admiration for Joey and his leadership. But we’ve never sat down to record. So why now? Well, in addition to being curious about the implications of his strategic alignment with CANarchy, and its unique resilience during the pandemic, I also recently learned that Joey had once suffered from a life-threatening coronavirus infection himself—years ago before anyone had really heard of it. And that experience, as scary and severe as it was, has given him a very unique vantage point for the social, cultural, and political environment we’re all finding our way through right now—because for him, none of those factors existed. There were no anti-maskers or shutdowns or government stimulus and temporary alcohol laws we all associate with the virus now. For him it was radically simple—it was life or death. This is Joey Redner of Cigar City Brewing and CANarchy. Listen in.

When we talk about the evolution of breweries into “beverage companies,” that conversation has been dominated by some of the largest corporations in the world. MillerCoors literally changed its name at the start of this year to Molson Coors Beverage Company to reflect its evolving business model and the shifting attitudes and preferences of today’s drinkers. Anheuser-Busch InBev sells across beverage categories—both alcoholic and non—and even craft conglomerates like CANarchy or Artisanal Brewing Ventures are diversifying across cider, flavored malt beverages like hard seltzer, and more. But when it comes to a truly modern beverage company, there’s plenty happening among the littler businesses, too. And that’s what guides the conversation in this episode. We’re going to talk hard seltzer, of course, but also cider and beer, and how marketing and sales work with and against the tactic of keeping all those drinks under one umbrella. To learn about all this, we’re chatting with Archie Gleason, the vice president of sales for Sycamore Brewing in Charlotte, North Carolina. This company has been growing fast in recent years, and has become a staple in many Tar Heel State grocery stores, while expanding north and south into neighboring states. You may not know Sycamore, but you’re likely familiar with the ideas and themes that drive this company’s approach: namely, that drinkers are interested in a host of experiences, and it's the responsibility of a forward-thinking company to fulfill that need. That’s what’s led Sycamore to expand into other categories while never quite taking an eye off what got the company to this point: beer. Sycamore is one of the more successful breweries to have started in North Carolina in the past decade, but a commitment to change has set it up ideally for the near future. Archie and I are going to talk about sales and data, labeling and trends, and about how his decades in the beer industry keep him feeling comfortable—even in an uncertain period for beer. I hope one of this conversation’s key takeaways also resonates with you: that Archie and the Sycamore team’s experience is going to be repeated a lot in the coming years by all sorts of breweries-turned-beverage-companies, no matter how big or small, or where they may be found around the country. This is Archie Gleason of Sycamore Brewing. Listen in.

An 11 year veteran of Oskar Blues, Tim Matthews now holds the lofty title of VP of Global Brewing for the Canarchy Craft Brewery Collective, where he's hyper focused on improving everything from product innovation to ingredient sourcing and grower/broker relationships. In this episode, he discusses their process of reinvention for popular beers, and what they've learned about the impacts of various ingredients and processes in the brewhouse. From the four year process of retooling Mama's Little Yella Pils to protein content shifts in barley (“Don’t get romantically involved with barley varieties") to how flavors expressed in raw hops reflect in finished beers, Matthews gets technical and nuanced in discussing beer ingredients. Along the way, he touches on important cultural trends such as breweries pursuing exclusive hops (“What brewers should not look for is their own special hop. Don’t do that. It’s too much pressure on yourself. You want a hop that works for everybody, and that means the growers, the brokers, and the brewers. And that’s plural ‘brewers.’ Not just you, not just Canarchy, but all of craft beer. You want it to be proliferated across the entire industry so it’s sustainable.”) He also discusses the way their yeast program is evolving, and offers up thoughts about next trends in beer (“Big, dark, and malty is next"). Craft Brew News - 8/23/2019(Courtesy of Brewbound - www.brewbound.com)MillerCoors, Stone Brewing File for Summary Judgement in Trademark CaseStone Brewing and MillerCoors have each filed for summary judgement in their ongoing trademark infringement lawsuit, according to Libation Law Blog.In February 2018, the San Diego-based craft brewery filed a lawsuit against MillerCoors, claiming its rebranded Keystone packaging caused marketplace confusion. In its latest brief, Stone Brewing claimed that its brand and trademark would be “destroyed” should MillerCoors succeed “in supplanting Stone’s craft beers with Keystone as ‘STONE’ in the minds of consumers.”Meanwhile, MillerCoors called the lawsuit “a publicity stunt” by Stone and claims that it was the first to use the “Stone” and “Stones” marks.“Stone Brewing is failing [to] keep pace in an ever more crowded craft beer segment and needed to revitalize its now-outdated image as an iconoclast,” MillerCoors’ brief said. “Stone Brewing’s market is increasingly populated by beers that are rated in official beer tastings as simply better than Stone Brewings’ ‘strong and unapologetically flavorful hops.’”Stone Brewing’s motion for preliminary injunction to ban the sale of Keystone products prior to a court hearing was denied earlier this year.Bell’s Brewery and Loveland Distributing Co. Headed to Richmond Circuit CourtThe legal dispute between Michigan’s Bell’s Brewery and Richmond, Virginia-based wholesaler Loveland Distributing Co. is heading to Richmond Circuit Court, according to Richmond Biz Sense. As Brewbound reported in October, when Premium Distributors of Virginia, a subsidiary of the Reyes Beverage Group, reached a deal to acquire Loveland Distributing Co., which had been selling Bell’s beer since 2015. According to reports, Bell’s had been attempting to terminate its contract with Loveland prior to the closing of the transaction due to the wholesaler not sharing crucial information regarding the deal. Bell’s ultimately ceased shipments to the state. The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority ordered the sides to enter arbitration in May, however, the ABC reversed course in July, saying only a Virginia circuit or district court could compel arbitration.Bell’s is appealing the order in hopes that Virginia ABC will determine it does have the authority to order arbitration, which Bells’ and Loveland’s contract calls for in the event of termination.Guns N’ Roses, CANarchy Settle LawsuitRock band Guns N’ Roses has settled its trademark infringement lawsuit against the CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective, which sold a rosé beer called “Guns ‘N’ Rosé ale” and merchandise without the band’s permission, according to Reuters. Kelsey is back from a trip to Arkansas and so she's brought beer from the Natural State for Adam and Steve to try. They talk about Strange Roots' new biergarten, West Virginia changing its laws, and CANarchy opening the Collaboratory in Asheville. Then Steve shares what he learned from Brian Sorensen's book Arkansas: An Intoxicating History and from visiting craft brewery websites. Finally it's DON'T BUY and DO BUY for Father's day beer gifts. The only videogame pun was going to be Arkansas: Survival Evolved. I dunno which is better. Ready to form CANarchy. Active interlock, Dynotherms connected, infracells are up, megathrusters are go. Deep Ellum and Perrin form feet and legs; Cigar City and Three Weavers form arms and body; and Oskar Blues forms the Head. Go CANarchy collective! Okay, maybe we went a little overboard with the Voltron joke, but it does seem appropriate for this band of brewers who have some of our favorite beers. It’s CANarchy today, so while we might not form a blazing sword, we’ll at least Have a Drink.

Craft Brew News – 04/06/19(courtesy of Brewbound.com)Constellation Brands Sales Top $8.1 Billion in Fiscal Year 2019Constellation Brands reported its fiscal year and second quarter 2019 earnings results today, which were highlighted by a 7 percent increase in net sales, to more than $8.1 billion.During the 2019 fiscal year, Corona brand family shipments reached 150 million cases, while depletions increased 7 percent. Meanwhile, Modelo brand family shipments exceeded 125 million cases, as depletions rose 12 percent.Newlands called Modelo Especial “the leading growth engine in entire U.S. beer market,” adding that it is the “fastest growing brand in the on-premise” and the No. 1 selling beer in 7-Eleven stores.“It is the fastest growing major beer in the industry, accounting for almost 40 percent of total category growth,” he said, adding that the beer is now the top selling brand in California. In 2020 fiscal year, Constellation Brands will make its “biggest marketing investment” behind Modelo, with television advertising during live sporting events as well as the roll out of 32 oz. single-serve bottles.Heineken USA to Pay Record $2.5 Million Fine to Settle Trade Practice ViolationsThe Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) today announced the acceptance of a record $2.5 million offer in compromise from Heineken USA Incorporated for alleged trade practice violations outlined in the Federal Alcohol Administration (FAA) Act.According to the TTB, HUSA supplied alcohol retailers with its proprietary “BrewLock” draft systems at no cost between August 1, 2015, and March 26, 2019.In a press release, the TTB said the BrewLock systems were designed to only dispense products packaged in unique kegs used by HUSA, which subsequently induced retailers into purchasing offerings made by the global brewing entity.Additionally, the TTB accused Heineken’s U.S. importing arm of making “slotting fee payments” to retailers, and disguising those transactions as “permissible activities” such as consumer sampling experiences that never actually occurred.Brewers Association: Craft Growth Outpacing Overall Beer MarketThe BA, which released its 2018 craft industry growth statistics today, reported that 7,346 craft breweries operated in the U.S. in 2018. That’s up from 6,490 in 2017.Those 7,346 craft breweries produced a combined 25.9 million barrels of beer in 2018, up about 800,000 barrels from 2017, the BA said.Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson told members of the media during a teleconference. “We’re still seeing openings outpace closings by almost five-to-one,” Watson added that he expects both numbers to be revised upward next year as additional data is collected. In 2018, craft’s share of total beer dollars grew to 24.1 percent — to an estimated $27.6 billion — which Watson attributed to price inflation and the so-called “long tail” of small brewers commanding higher retail margins. Craft’s volume share of the overall U.S. beer also increased, to 13.2 percent last year, up from 12.6 percent in 2017.Watson also made a case for the smallest breweries finding the most success as they build their businesses through direct-to-consumer taproom sales. The BA estimates that the number of barrels sold directly to consumers via brewery taprooms grew by about 400,000 barrels, to 3.1 million barrels, in 2018 (up from 2.71 million barrels in 2017).Ninkasi Brewing Sells Majority Stake, Establishes National Platform to Acquire Other BreweriesOregon’s Ninkasi Brewing has sold a majority stake to Legacy Breweries Inc., an upstart venture led by former Yakima Chief CEO Don Bryant, that aims to acquire U.S. craft breweries.Similar to Canarchy – which owns Oskar Blues, Cigar City Brewing, Deep Ellum, Utah Brewers Cooperative, Perrin Brewing and Three Weavers – or Artisanal Brewing Ventures – which owns Victory Brewing, Southern Tier and Sixpoint Brewery – Legacy Breweries Inc. hopes to establish “collaborative partnerships” with craft breweries, according Ninkasi co-founder Nikos Ridge.Speaking to Brewbound, Ridge said he, along and co-founder Jamie Floyd and the company’s six investors, would “retain significant ownership” in the brewery.“Ninkasi sold a majority stake to Legacy Breweries in order to create a new platform that can leverage our resources in conjunction with those of the Legacy team,” he said.As those “brewing hubs” are established, the company would also look to acquire 10 to 15 smaller breweries in those geographies. Those companies would be able to access expanded production and packaging capabilities and have better access to raw materials such as hops, malt, and cans. Tim and Brian pontificate on the many styles of IPA We had a guest lined up for this week, we were all set up and ready to go, but we weren't able to connect with them.  We're all about making lemonade (or maybe a nice lemon Gose) out of lemons so we fired up the mics and freestyled a short show.  We're sampling some IPAs so we discuss the many styles of IPA and if all IPAs are really IPAs. We also introduce a fairly new team member, Sam Kempe.  Sam's been behind the scenes for a while, he's a man of few words, but as our Audio Engineer, he makes sure all our ramblings get recorded each week.  Brian even sings about beer for a few seconds. There were a few new beers in the rotation this week, like Creature Comforts' Goodie Pils, and Monday Night's Locals Only and Mischief Managed Peach.  Trusty Tritonia was in the mix along with a beer that sounds like a high school athlete, Tre Fontaine.  Founders' Barrel Runner made an appearance and made Brian cry because he still has 3 left to drink.  I gotta say, I didn't hate it.  The flavor reminded me of those little rum barrel hard candies.  I'd be hard pressed to say this is a good beer, but once my brain equated it with those little candies I enjoyed the flavor. In the news, we discuss a beer that was gone before we knew it existed, the growth of CANarchy, an out of this world collaboration at Crystal Lake Brewing, Buffalo Wild Wings' brewery partnerships for football season, barley shortages in Europe, and bottle

Reformation Brewery prepares to 'Set Beer Free' at their second location Woodstock, GA is a fairly small community about 30 miles north of Atlanta.  It's been my home for 14 years and Reformation Brewery's home for nearly five.  When I moved here the "big" news/controversy in town was the opening of a new Super Wal-Mart.  Many of the city's elder residents didn't think we needed that kind of growth, the old Wal-Mart was just fine (it wasn't).  Now, the Downtown Woodstock area is lined with shops and restaurants, we have an amphitheater, a really nice trail system, and a brewery. As Reformation approaches that 5th anniversary, they're preparing to open their second location.  The 6,00-square-foot space is in the heart of Downtown Woodstock, close to all those fancy amenities I mentioned earlier.  A 5-barrel brewhouse will serve up a variety of small-batch beers to visitors.  The split plan will have various areas to relax and enjoy your brew, with one section set up to have a coffeehouse feel.  The brewery has partnered with Queenie's Southern Restaurant & Bar for food service and space will be available for private events. We sat down with Reformation Co-founder and Brewmaster Nick Downs this week to talk about the new digs, new beers, his faith and how that influences his business, and what he envisions for Reformation in the future.  We also share a story about Martin Luther and how he helped promote the use of hops in beer. Fresh back from Las Vegas, Brian drops some cigar info our way with his recap of new offerings discovered at the annual IPCPR cigar convention.  If you want more cigar info be sure to check out StogieReview.com where Brian waxes poetic about his love for burning dead leaves.
