In order to celebrate their latest milestone the Yorozuya are forced to do a collaboration with the gang from Sket Dance, even if their past collaborations really only came down to them ripping off other series with silly parodies. Gintama had 367 episodes and ran from 2006 to 2018 with periods of cancellation and renewal, it was produced by Sunrise studios mostly. A studio also known for: Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass, and Sgt. Frog SKET Dance had 77 episodes and ran from 2011 to 2012 it was produced by Tatsunoko Production Anime. It was only a matter of time before Tokusatsu Roulette let us down, but all things considered, it could have been much worse! It could have been something as bad as SKET Dance. And not a lot happened in JoJo this week. Just table-setting, mostly. So you know, things get a bit off-topic. (Next week's Tokusatsu Roulette selection: Shuriken Sentai Ninninger, Episode 30) [Music used: Intro -- Androgyny by Garbage | Outro -- Like a Surgeon by Weird Al] [Tokusatsu Roulette theme: Go Down Gamblin' by Blood, Sweat, & Tears]
Please do not send me emails, I know the "saved by the bell" thing I mentioned is not real. I'm just attempting to gaslight George yet again. Anyway, SKET Dance fucking sucks so I just re-rolled and we got Hunter X Hunter again. Good decision! Meanwhile, we talk about Snatcher and Star Wars and whatever the hell else. I don't know what's going on any more. We're just waiting for JoJo to end at this point. Pity us. (Next week's Tokusatsu Roulette selection: Ressha Sentai Toqger, Episode 35) [Music used: Intro -- My Name is Mud by Primus | Outro -- She Hates Me by Puddle of Mudd] [Anime Roulette theme: Roulette! by Electric Six]
Last week sucked, but this week we're both feeling better, and trust me... This one goes to some weird places. Possibly our most legally-actionable episode yet! Hooray! (next week's Anime Roulette selection: SKET Dance, Episode 47) [Music used: Intro -- Haushinka by Green Day | Outro -- Wndrwll by Neil Cicierega] [Anime Roulette theme: Roulette! by Electric Six]

Yeah the Sket Dance review is delayed again. Don't fret, we promise it'll come sooner than the final two books of A Song of Ice and Fire! So what are we reviewing this week? We don't know! I mean, we do because we recorded the episode already...but it was a total crapshoot before we recorded it. We literally just spun a wheel and picked whatever random manga it landed. So what did the Wheel of Manga choose for us to review? No spoilers - you'll have to listen to the episode to find out! As far as news goes, we've got an exciting Bookscan list to cover, discuss when Hunter X Hunter will come back from its latest hiatus, and whether Kirishin's contest to publish the world's first Christian light novel is a good idea. It's a pretty short show this week, but nonetheless still an hour's worth of quality manga discussion! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:22 - Intro 01:48 - August Bookscan List 05:05 - Hunter X Hunter Goes On Hiatus Again 08:05 - Akiko Higashimura Continues Tarare-Bar 09:30 - Fist of the Blue Sky Returns in October 11:13 - Yoshiki Tanaka finishes Legend of Arslan’s Final Volume 12:05 - Kodansha USA Adds New Digital Titles 15:50 - Dark Horse to Release a Yoshitaka Amano Biography 18:28 - Japanese Publisher Plans World’s 1st Christian Light Novel 21:23 - The Promised Neverland has 1.5 million copies in print 23:36 - A Random Manga Review 54:40 - Wrap-up Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and now on Youtube! It feels good to have finally released the Pokemon Adventures retrospective after months of editing it on and off. Doubly so after refueling my passion for the series upon flipping through the Pokemon Adventures artbook that Viz just put out earlier this week. It’s chock full of beautiful color art and illustrations from Satoshi Yamamoto’s entire run on the series, from the early GSC stuff to the recent ORAS arc. In addition to gorgeous renditions of the cover artwork, there are a lot of great colorized versions of iconic scenes from the manga that you can’t find in the regular volumes, which are a real delight. Even more so is the inclusion of the first chapter of the Pokemon Ranger webcomic Yamamoto drew back in ’06, which has never been collected in graphic novels before or translated in English! Yamamoto promises that in the next artbook, he’ll include more chapters, and considering that this story seems to explain what happened to Deoxys after FireRed & LeafGreen, I really hope he does so. This artbook was a real treat to read through as a long-time fan of the series and Yamamoto’s art, and I highly encourage every Pokemon Adventures fan to seek it out and support this release. Now, you might be asking yourself “why did he devote an entire paragraph to talking about an artbook unrelated to the content of this podcast?” Could it be…gasp, a paid promotion?! The answer my friends is…no. I wish I could get paid to shill Pokemon products. I genuinely just liked the artbook and wanted to let the people who enjoyed our Pokemon Adventures podcasts know about it. In full disclosure, I was approached by Viz Media after releasing the retrospective to promote the book in exchange for a free copy and I accepted. However, I had already preordered the book months ago, and I received it before I even released that podcast – over a full week before street date. So I’m being 100% bonafide in my appraisal and recommendation of that artbook. Jonathan and I are going to do an entire podcast about the evolution of Satoshi Yamamoto’s art because we love this series so much and want to keep talking about it. Unlike the Pokemon franchise itself, we haven’t sold out yet! However, if I had to shill for dough – and for a product I didn’t enjoy - I might very well not have a choice in the matter. You see, All-Comic.com needs money worse than a house pet in Kakegurui. Moving to new servers isn’t cheap, and we need a grand to keep the site afloat for another year. If we don’t get your support, we’ll need to put more adds on our site and start taking paid promotions. We even got an e-mail from some guy to run paid ads for his language-learning products on the show. Do you guys really want us to interrupt our podcasts to shill a product we don’t even use? You know what I’m talking about. You all saw how those Naruto Online ads ruined Mother’s Basement’s videos. Now we all start clicking away as soon as he goes into shill mode, even when there’s still half the review left! You don’t want that to happen to this podcast, do you? Then please, for the love of god, contribute to our GoFundMe campaign and keep this site and podcast ad-free for another year! If you don’t our next option would be to roll the dice on a big gamble and hope we played our cards right. That’s easier said than done of course, especially when there’s a lot of money on the table and it’s a high-risk venture. Kind of like the games featured in the aforementioned Kakegurui, the most popular anime of the summer 2017 season about a girl who literally has snake eyes and gets off on gambling. Unfortunately, those cucks at Netflix aren’t going to put it up until 2018, so we had no choice but to check out the manga instead. Will we go gambling mad over the series, or did we break the bank buying the books for nothing? Place your bets. Yo! Here’s how the story goes you find out. About a manga in Shonen Jump, there’s no doubt. The podcaster whose eye is on it he’ll say “I’ll be making a podcast, s’what I’m gonna be making!” So we set sights on One Piece, Eiichiro Oda’s monolithic manga that has been enthralling fans worldwide for over 20 years. To help us commemorate this hardy occasion, we brought aboard Sam Leach, a shipmate over at the One Piece Podcast, to help us make merry over our One Piece memories. During the course of our three hour reminiscence, we’re reminded how through it all - through all the troubled times, through the heartache and through the pain - we know that One Piece will be there to stand by us, just like we know we’ll stand by it. We are on a cruise, and have been for the last twenty years. No matter how much longer this journey may last, know that there is always room for you if you want to be our friend and join this adventure with us. Together we will find everything that we’re looking for. So come aboard and bring along all your hopes and dreams! Being a One Piece fan will satisfy them like no other manga will. Oh, and we talk about news for a bit too. It was a pretty great month for manga in North America! Lots of Bookscan representation, Berserk was finally made available digitally, and there were some great licenses from Viz Media at Comic Con! Back in Japan there was a controversy over Yuna of Yuragi Manor that we spend quite a bit of time dissecting, and probably will come back to as a broader discussion topic on fanservice down the line. It was pretty fortuitous that the One Piece live-action tv show was announced the week we recorded this so we wouldn’t have an awkward transition between topics! Editor's Note, 2020: This podcast was recorded before the revelations about Nobuhiro Watsuki and the subsequent failure to prosecute him for his crime. As a consequence of the Watsuki situation, we've since reevaluated our feelings on Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel our discussion of his comic essay about Eiichiro Oda is worth including, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this comic and its creator are more complicated and critical now. This podcast is very much a product of its time, and we humbly ask you to keep this in mind as you listen to it. It's kinda crazy that Pokemon is more popular than ever internationally twenty years later. Pokemon Go was a phenomenon, the hype for Sun & Moon grows more and more like an Exeggutor every day, and there was a huge uproar over Ash losing his match with Alain in the finals of the Kalos League in the anime. With the games, anime, and manga all better than ever, this has been a great year to be a Pokemon fan! Heck, with this much vitality, Pokemon is sure to be going strong another 20 years! On that note, screw the Olympic Committee's reasoning for not including Pokemon among the anime and gaming franchises representing Japan in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. So apparently Pokemon is not as popular internationally as Yo-Kai Watch? Suuuurrreee.... While some franchises like Pokemon will never die, most series are finite. That's especially true of manga. It's unbelievable just how many long-running and popular titles have ended this year. Just this month alone, there's been Nisekoi, Billy Bat, Genshiken, and as of this week, Bleach. It feels surreal to live in a world where Bleach is over. It ran for fifteen years, and was among the formative series for an entire generation of anime and manga fans. Once a part of the so-called "Big 3," it had a dramatic fall from grace about half-way into it's run, and never recovered afterwards. Opinions on the series vary, but there's no denying it left an impact in the community and the industry. It's unlikely to continue on as a franchise like Naruto has, but it's unlikely to be forgotten all the same, and sure to be a subject of heated debates between shonen fans for many years to come. But we've got more to talk about this week than the ending of Bleach! This week's Manga Mavericks features plenty of new licenses, movie announcements, and neat little tidbits to keep you up to date on the latest happenings in the manga industry! Plus, we discuss the new Shonen Jump simulpub series, Astra Lost in Space by Kenta Shinohara of Sket Dance fame! We all know that Colton is a big fan of Sket Dance, but what did he think of Shinohara's latest creation? No need to be lost searching through the episode for it - this week I've got a breakdown to help you jump right to it! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha.
