My guest for this episode is Steve Matthiasson. This is the second time I've interviewed Steve, so I highly recommend listening to the first episode from about three years ago if you haven't. Steve is the eponymous dude behind Matthiasson Wines, and maybe dude is the wrong title for Steve. He might be more of a punk rebel organic evangelist operating from inside the Cabernet Curtain in the heart of Napa Valley. Surprisingly for this podcast, you're going to hear praise for James Suckling AND The Mondavi Family, and a hopeful outlook for classical wines in California despite climate change. But much more importantly, and less surprisingly, you're going to hear numerous incredibly helpful technical vitiultural insights into how to farm grapes organically to make fresh, vibrant wines in an increasingly hotter world. Once again, I recommend getting out your notepad and pencil for this one. You Can Support this podcast by subscribing via patreon. Or by donating or taking action at: Beyond Organic Wine
The run on white wines for summer continues this week with Riesling. Kathryn explains how to find a dry version of this varietal, and why it's worth seeking out. Shout out to Germany, the birthplace and top producer of this grape. Kathryn professes her love for the perfect restaurant list to explore the styles of this Riesling. At Esters, Kathryn recounts a recent inspiring Regenerative farming seminar with winemaker Steve Matthiasson. At home, the couple grapples with the long days of summer and the wild cost of camps. Rosé is on every shelf, it floods our glasses all year and there seems to be no end to the amount that is made, but is there still any artistry to this wine? On today's podcast, famed winemaker Steve Matthiasson discusses the story of our obsession with pink wine and how where it fits into the world of fine wine and even finds the parallels with the beer market. don't forget you can get 50% off a year of SOMM TV by entering the code: 50OFF at SOMMTV.COM for a very limited time.
My guest for this episode is Hoss Hauksson, and he practices a form of viticulture in Switzerland that integrates elements of vitiforestry or a silvoculture polyculture, using a biodynamic approach, with the world's smallest sheep and technologies like drone spraying and UV robots. His wine takes the idea of terroir literally, incorporating medicinal and aromatic herbs and trees as infusions in both the vineyard ecosystem and in his pinot noir. In other words, I think I discovered my long lost soul twin. Hoss is one of the only, if not the one and only, Icelandic winemakers on earth, (which means he's probably related to Steve Matthiasson) and he tells us about his journey from wanting to be “the hero winemaker” to a focus on just becoming a good farmer. Hoss's holistic, ecological view of fostering a healthy farm ecosystem from which the best, most interesting wine can be made, leads us from some really important discussion about the soil microbiome through to expressing terroir by making a pet-nat infused with wormwood, hyssop, and yarrow. Along the way we find out the importance of promoting a fungal-dominant soil that recreates the forest floor from which vines evolved, how he uses different trees and herbs for different purposes in and around the vines, and how his adorable miniature sheep are vital to the entire ecosystem. Fertile nuggets of information, rich with wisdom, are scattered everywhere through this interview like sheep poop in a vineyorchard. You're in for a treat. This episode features Steve Matthiason, who has had an outsized role in the North Coast Californian wine industry both as a viticultural consultant and as a winemaker. This episode served as a chance to catch up since we worked together twelve years ago. I speak with Steve Matthiasson, vineyard consultant and owner of Matthiasson Vineyards in Napa, about water conservation in the vineyard.Steve gives an overview of Napa’s climate and how farming practices have changed over the last 20 years. He cautions that drought cycles are more extreme and that all indicators show that there will be less water in the future. He discusses farming practices that help conserve water including planting cover crops, increasing soil organic matter, tilling differently, changing row orientations, and using different trellising systems and deeper rooted rootstocks. It turns out that farming practices that conserve water are also good for the soil.Steve also talks about how certain wine styles require more irrigation, and that there is an aspect to sustainability on the consumer side as well. Jason Wise and winemaker Steve Matthiasson have an honest conversation about sustainable farming and biodynamics.
It is my honor to have Steve Matthiasson as my guest for this episode… and what I have recorded for you is a comprehensive instructional on how to farm grapes organically. Steve uses his over 25 years of professional experience as a viticulturalist to take us through an entire year of farming a vineyard. This episode is not so much an interview as a master class.Steve Matthiasson is a 6 time James Beard Award Nominee for his winemaking. He has been named Winemaker of the Year twice, by two different publications. Steve literally wrote the manual on sustainable winegrowing in California. And Steve is a farmer first. He built a wine business in Napa as a punk rock farmer outsider who believes in farming organically to make wine as a fresh, expressive, and food friendly agricultural product. He makes Napa Cab that is 13% alcohol, and whole-cluster fermented Ribolla Gialla, and many other wines that stand in contrast to most of what you expect from Napa Valley wines. His accolades as a winemaker belie the fact that his wines simply capture the enormous amount of time and attention and care that he gives to the vineyards he farms. We go deep, and it gets technical. So if you aren’t that interested in the real, detailed, how-to of farming grapes, you may be a bit overwhelmed. But if you have any interest in learning the how’s, when’s, and what’s of winegrowing, this is an amazing and invaluable episode. Get out some paper. You will want to take notes. And if you want to learn more about this amazing guy and his organic approach to wine, please check out the other great interviews with him on the podcasts “I’ll Drink To That” with Levi Dalton, or “The Grape Nation” – Steve Matthiasson’s knowledge about and passion for wine is as immense as his generosity of spirit, and your life will only be improved by knowing him and his wines better.

This is a brief discussion that occurred between Steve Matthiasson and myself before we started recording for the podcast episode published previous to this publishing. In this conversation, Steve and I discuss the human element in wine in regards to terroir. This subject came up after myself speaking to comparative tastings of white Burgundy and California Chardonnay, the differences between the two in terms of minerality and richness, followed by the stylistic differences. Steve argues that the primary difference is the human element and style, which more often that not is left out of the conversation of terroir.
Steve dreamt of farming his entire life. He became an obsessed gardener and cook while studying philosophy in college. In 1994, while back in grad school for horticulture after three years as a bike messenger/wannabe farmer, he found a job in vineyards and orchards working for a small sustainable agriculture consulting firm. In 1999 he co-authored the California manual on sustainable vineyard practices. In 2002 he started consulting on vineyard practices in Napa. He still loves the challenge of solving vineyard problems for others, but since 2003 the primary focus has been on his own family farming and winemaking with his wife Jill. Steve is a life-long student of the craft of viticulture. Eric Asimov has said of Steve’s wines, “Matthiasson wines bear an agricultural stamp, as fresh, lively and alive as the best produce from a farmers’ market.” Steve is a James Beard Award Finalist in 2018 & 2019, and has been named Winemaker of the Year by both the San Francisco Chronicle and Food & Wine Magazine. In Episode 83 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of republishing my interview with Steven Kent Mirassou, a 6th generation winemaker who's family has been making wines for a little over 165 years and a guy who's family has pioneered the wine industry! In this episode Steven talks about the viticultural excellence of Livermore Valley when considering weather, soils, sunshine and wind and how, when he originally got into the wine business back in 1996 he wanted to make 1 great wine from Livermore Valley, not just to be another guy making wine, but to stretch the envelope of people's recognition of the appellation they were in. Steven talks about his favorite varietal being Cabernet Franc and how he thinks this varietal is the sexiest grape, describing it as sort of leaving this tension in the mouth while being very acid-driven, running under both generous fruit and an herbal mix. Steven talks about Steven Kent Winery, Lineage Wine Company, and Rag Bag Wine Works and the privilege it is to be making these wines alongside his son Aidan, 7th generation winemaker of the Mirassou Family. Steven talks about some of his biggest inspirations in the wine industry, 2 being Claude Bobba and Brad Buehler of Wente Vineyards and how these gentlemen inspired and educated him about a better understanding of the Livermore Valley. Also mentioned were Ehren Jordan of Failla Wines, and Steve Matthiasson of Matthiasson Wines. Steven goes on to stress that it's not only people but appellations and wineries that inspire him as well; wineries such as Mount Eden Vineyards who Steven feels makes arguably the best Cabernet out of California, Ridge Vineyards, Spottswoode Estate, and appellations such as Sicily, Barolo, and Barbaresco. Steven also goes on to share his ultimate goal in the wine industry and that is to make people happy and provide an experience for them that makes their life a little better than it was before they had a glass of his wine. With that being said, Steven Kent Mirassou is truly a man whose heart goes way beyond his ability to make world class wines. Not only that, but Steven's energy in this podcast overflows with so much charisma, and so much enthusiasm, that from the first minute of this episode you know you're in for a treat. Today I have the privilege of introducing to you a guy whose passion goes way beyond that of just being an amazing winemaker. Scott Young of Young Inglewood Vineyards is going to move and motivate you through sincerity, a genuine and compassionate heart, and a strong family commitment towards a mission that they know they're creating some of the most organic and sustainable wines throughout Napa Valley. In this episode Scott talks about his upbringing, being surrounded by wine most of his life, and that inspiration and appreciation for wine that he viewed through his beautiful mother Jacky. Scott talks about his earlier days in University studying Philosophy. He recalls his family considering selling their family business to pursue a dream in the wine industry. Scott talks about his family asking him if he'd be interested in joining them along this journey, recalling all the ways that wine motivated his family growing up, and was convinced that this was a great move for him as well. Scott focuses heavily on the organic and sustainable approach to winemaking that him and his mother Jacky, also winemaker for Young Inglewood, approach each day. Not only that, but Scott had the privilege of being surrounded by these types of foods and lifestyle growing up, so it was a no-brainer to him that this was the way they were going to make their wines as well. Scott talks a lot about his mother Jacky, and what it's like to make wine in an intimate, family run winery. He also talks about the appreciation he has for his mother, what she means to the winery, and also her appreciation for bio-dynamic farming and all the attention to detail that goes into making wine at Young Inglewood. Scott talks about mentors in the wine industry and those that have inspired him along his journey, people like Steve Matthiasson, Joe Klein, and the amazingly talented winemaker herself, Jennifer Williams of Zeitgeist Cellars. Scott also talks about the meaning behind the name Young Inglewood, representing a sense of place, and the meaning behind the label, representing all of the balance and harmony that goes into making wine. Like I said before, Scott is going to move and motivate you through so many different channels in this episode. You're really going to get to hear from someone who's not only passionate about what he loves, but just as passionate about touching the community, working with his family, and creating extraordinary wines each and every year. So sit back, relax, and get ready, because you are going to love this episode! Steve Matthiasson studied philosophy in college, but thankfully moved on to horticulture in grad school at UC Davis, finding his way into the vineyards and orchards working for a small sustainable agriculture firm. Steve started consulting on vineyard practices and helped co-write the book on these practices in California. In 2003 Steve started primarily focusing on his family farm and winemaking operation Matthiasson Wines. The SF Chronicle and Food and Wine Magazine named Steve "Winemaker of the Year" Viticulture and horticulture are just as important to Steve as grapes and winemaking. Steve Matthiasson is what I call the anti-Napa, Napa winemaker. More farmer than winemaker, Matthiasson looks beyond cabernet and chardonnay, also growing ribolla giala refresco, scioppettino, and tocai fruliano. He is always looking for what grows best on his land. His farmer's mindset leads to wines of restraint and elegance.
Steve Matthiasson runs the Matthiasson winery with his wife and family, and also acts as a vineyard consultant to many wineries in California.
