Click on any streaming service and you'll be bombarded with movies featuring violence, war, death and so many other destructive acts of mankind. But if you look a little further, you'll also find the opposite: films that celebrate humanity and promote positive change and transformation. Their numbers are quite smaller—but they're out there. In this episode we speak with one of these humanitarian filmmakers, director Emmanuel Itier. Emmanuel went through his own metamorphosis, from commercial movie maker to creator of films meant to enlighten and empower us. In this lively discussion, Emmanuel tells us:· why he started making documentaries that speak to the soul· how he connected with Sharon Stone and her role in his story· why documentaries are the perfect medium for helping us embrace our humanity· what his first documentary, The Invocation, teaches us about our interconnectedness· the reason why he made a film about water· why he believes it's time for all of us to get political· the mind shift we all have to make before the world can end warIf you believe there's a place for films that both entertain and educate us, you'll want to hear all about Emmanuel's role in this world on this expressive episode of Dream Power Radio. An experienced feature film Producer, Emmanuel Itier directed several pictures before completing in 2012 the Peace documentary The Invocation, narrated by Sharon Stone and staring Desmond Tutu, HH The Dalai Lama, and Deepak Chopra, as well as many worldwide peace activists. In 2013 Mr. Itier executive-produced a Drama filmed in Hong Kong: Red Passage which won many Awards in the Festival circuit. In the midst of a year that saw pandemic disease, social unrest, and bare-knuckled politics, Hollywood churned out a tremendous body of work—even while theaters closed, and films created for the big screen streamed directly to our homes. Pete Hammond says this year's Academy Awards reflect the issues facing Americans. Hammond, chief film critic for Deadline Hollywood, is widely considered to be one of the most distinguished awards analysts for both film and television. In addition to being chief film critic at Deadline, he has also been Awards Editor and Columnist for the past eight years. In his past he has reviewed films for MovieLine, Boxoffice magazine, Backstage, Hollywood.com and Maxim, as well as frequently contributing to Variety. Outside of writing, Pete is also in his seventeenth year as host of the year-round KCET Cinema Series in Los Angeles, where he screens a selection of films prior to their theatrical release and interviews filmmakers. He is also host of UCLA extension's Sneak Preview for the past ten years, and has hosted panels at AFI Fest, the Santa Barbara Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Festival, Mill Valley Film Festival, CineVegas, San Francisco Film Festival, and Cannes Film Festival. He has interviewed prestigious filmmakers and stars from groups such as SAG, DGA, BAFTA, and WGA. He previously held producing positions at Entertainment Tonight, Extra, Access Hollywood, The Arsenio Hall Show, The Martin Short Show and AMC Network. He is the winner of both the 1996 and 2013 Publicists Guild of America's Press Award, making him only the second journalist in the 50-year history of the organization to receive the award twice. He served on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for six years and is the recipient of five Emmy nominations for writing. Filmmaker Michel Shane didn't envision himself as an activist, but circumstances in life brought him to a different place. The producer of “Catch Me If You Can” this time produced something even closer to his heart, “21 Miles In Malibu,” and Michel joins us today to talk about it. The Pacific Coast Highway is a long, twisty, narrow stretch of road, it's beautiful but it's also dangerous. Michel knows all too well, because his beautiful daughter, Emily, was killed by a driver said to be on a murder mission. She was just 12. In this film, Michel details the history of the 21 mile road that borders the Pacific Ocean, why it was built, and the history of the area and land long before a road was built there. It's fascinating and well researched, and has gained the attention of the larger film community. The film will be shown at the Santa Barbara Film Festival this year. The goal is to draw attention to how the PCH can be safer. And he details that in his film as well. Please join us for this wonderful conversation, and invite your friends along as well. Thanks, as always, for tuning in. #DeborahKobyltLIVE #DeborahZaraKobylt - @shanegangpics #pacificcoasthighway #21milesinmalibu #michelshane #shanegangpictures #emilyshanefoundation

Welcome to the Santa Barbara Film Festival! We were unable to join in person, but we still got to cover two very different yet captivating films, A Place in the Field and Fresh to Frightening: The Sharon Green Story. The feature film A Place in the Field follows veteran Gio Scuderi as he receives a package in the mail that sends him on a road trip to fulfill a promise, but ends up fulfilling so much more. We were honored to be joined by director Nicole Mejia, co-writer and star Don DiPetta, producer Heliya Alam, and cinematographer Kadri Koop. We discuss the significance of having a woman direct (and other key roles in the crew) a story about a military vet, how the film's many beautiful locations (much like the film itself) came together in a serendipitous way, the power of horse therapy, and how life imitated art during the making of the film.In the short film Fresh to Frightening: The Sharon Green Story, we're introduced to Sharon Green, one of the best yacht racing photographers in the game. Director Gareth Kelly and Sharon Green herself joined us to share how they met and decided to make this film, Sharon's fearlessness and success in a world dominated by men, and some of her scariest "oh shit" moments while photographing a yacht race from a helicopter. You can follow the film A Place in the Field on IG & FBYou can follow the film Fresh to Frightening: The Sharon Green Story on IG & FBYou can follow director Nicole Mejia on IG You can follow actor Don DiPetta on IG & Twitter & FBYou can follow producer Heliya Alam on IG You can follow cinematographer Kadri Koop on IG You can follow director Gareth Kelly on IG & Twitter You can follow yacht race photographer Sharon Green on IG & Twitter & FB--Thanks for listening and for your support! Over the past few days I have had the incredible privilege of meeting with a variety of individuals who have dedicated their lives to the profession of investigating child sex crimes. Few of us understand the complexity of these investigations and emotional strength it takes to go after some of the most vile people on earth. These pedophiles troll the internet looking to access, groom, seduce, recruit and exploit our children. The opportunity to meet these heros came out of the time we spent at the Santa Barbara Film Festival preparing for the release of the film "Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic". When a child is seduced and exploited, it affects the entire family and changes the life of the young person forever. Most of these predators never have just one victim. So educating parents and teens to report crimes like sextortion is critical and saving the evidence and working with investigators is imperative to being able to identify the predator. The men and women who conduct these very challenging and complex investigations are truly saints on earth. So proud to know them. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/million-kids/support

Nicholas Weissman, executive producer of "Havana Libre," joins the podcast to talk about this documentary which follows the trials and travails of a dedicated group of Cuban surfers who try to get their sport officially recognized by their government. Surfing in Cuba exists in this liminal space, neither legal nor quite illegal, haunted by the legacy of "balseros," tens of thousands of whom traversed the 90-mile channel between Cuba and Florida on makeshift rafts. Francisco ("Frank") and Yaya are the two stars of the documentary, and their charisma carries through the film, as they deal with bureaucrats, regulations and risking everything to compete and participate in surfing events in different countries. When surfing was recognized as an Olympic sport for the Tokyo Games, they see their chance to bring their beloved sport into their homeland, but at great risk to themselves and their families. The project began with an article in the New York Times about an intrepid group of surfboard shapers making do with ingenuity and craft, including tearing open refrigerator doors to get at the buoyant styrofoam. Corey McLean and Seth Brown, two surfers from Maine, recognized kindred spirits and sought to bring their story to the world. The film has been accepted into the Santa Barbara Film Festival and will be hitting the festival circuit after a two-year pandemic hiatus. Weissman is an Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker based in Ojai. He has worked for the New Yorker magazine, the New York Times, PBS, HBO and National Geographic. He won his Emmy for "A Boy Helps a Town Heal," a film he made for Sports Illustration. His most recent feature, "For Ahkeem," about the juvenile justice system in St. Louis, also won much acclaim. His first independent film, "The Minutemen" about border vigilantes, won the Silver Hugo Award at the Chicago International Film Festival. We did not talk about Duke Kahanamoku, taimen fishing in the headwaters of the Amur River or the Y2K panic.

In this episode, we talk about making conscious content for a better world. Emmanuel is an experienced feature film producer and documentary filmmaker. A regular at all the major Film Festivals and Conventions, Emmanuel scouts for films for French distributors. We sit in line watching films together and talking about what's good and what's not for our clients. Of course, he has a ton of film credits. But I do want to speak about his documentary work because it's so meaningful and so needed today. I was involved in his Peace documentary THE INVOCATION narrated by Sharon Stone and starring Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama, Deepak Chopra, as well as many other worldwide peace activists. I got a little special thanks credit on that film, because I brought in some actors, and I brought in some really great spiritual leaders that contributed to the documentary. He's also on the board of the Santa Barbara Film Festival for a decade. During a spirited conversation, we opened the lid to the world of documentary production and the challenges of making content for a purpose and not for capital gain. Some highlights: Our actions need to speak for us more than our talks. Why Emmanuel started making documentaries. The distribution and growing popularity of docs today.Working with actress Sharon Stone.Having faith in what you believe in and how faith helps us to keep going.Meeting Desmond Tutu. And so much more! "I have Ray Romano in my head so I'm looking for a guy like that from the (Russian) TV show who should be every man, a guy who likes to be left alone and is not very demonstrative. They didn't cast that guy, but he's the exact opposite of Ray like a serial killer!"
