Mothers Against GenocideThis column makes no apologies for writing so much about the genocide in Palestine and the urgent need for ceasefires and a peace process.  At least 14,000 babies face imminent death from starvation. Over 60,000 Palestinian children, women, men have been killed, including more than 4,000 since Israel ended its ceasefire in March. One especially harrowing example of Israel's murder machine at work was the deliberate targeting last Friday of the family home of Hamdi and Walaa al-Najjar, two doctors who work at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis. As Hamdi was at work nine of her ten children were killed. Her husband and a 10th child was left critically ill.Mothers Against Genocide have stood up against this savagery and for the rights of the Palestinian people. Sue Pentel and Martine McCullough are active in this campaign. Sue has been a political activist all her life. My earliest memory of her is as a member of Women against Imperialism over 40 years ago. Sue is a Gaeilgeoir who has worked for decades promoting the education of our young people through the medium of Irish. She is also a committed advocate for the rights of the people of Palestine and last weekend she and her friend Martine were arrested by the PSNI and charged with ‘criminal damage' to an ATM at Barclays Bank in Castle Place in Belfast City Centre. The so-called criminal damage was the placing of a sticker on the machine as a reminder of Barclays role in selling Israeli war bonds.‘If I Must Die'There will be a public event this Saturday – 31 May - about the ongoing genocide. The venue is St Comgalls/Ionad Eileen Howell and it starts at 7.30pm. Chairing the meeting, which is sponsored by the Bobby Sands Trust, will be Dr Brendan Ciaran Browne, Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution. The main speaker will be Yousef M. Aljamal On the International Wall in Belfast there is a poem by Refaat Alareer, ‘If I Must Die' which he wrote for his daughter, Shaymaa, who would grow up to be an accomplished illustrator. It is very poignant because the Israelis went on to kill Refaat, along with his sister, brother and four of nephews and nieces, eighteen months ago. Give the vote to 16-year-old citizens. The debate on reducing the voting age to 16 is gathering momentum. Twice in the last decade the Assembly – minus the DUP - has endorsed the call for the vote to be reduced in the North from 18 to 16. Several years ago Sinn Féin introduced a Bill in the Oireachtas to allow for this in southern elections and last week An Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that he had an “open mind” on such a proposition and would give it “serious consideration.”The Commission on the Future of Ireland are hosting 'Health & Care in a New Ireland' on the 6th of June, 1pm at St Comgalls, Belfast.Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/health-care-in-a-new-ireland-tickets-1354804690299

Nile Rogers of Chic Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson This sit-down with my old friend, multiple Grammy Winner, Rock & Roll Hall Inductee, Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee, composer, producer, arranger, and guitarist, Nile Rogers, is SOLID GOLD… more like triple platinum. Even though we never exchanged more than a few words in the handful of times he graced my jams back in the day, there was always DHM (deep hidden meaning), as there always is with Nile. This day, we got to that and so much more. STORIES! Oh my lord, No one tells ‘em like Nile. Case in point, his tome, Le Freak, may be the greatest memoir I've read. I could not put the thing down. When was the last time I read a book cover to cover in less than 24 hours? A rare score on Amazon these days, Nile's assured he'll be updating and republishing. It's a MUST-read for music fans, flower children, and anyone who loves to sink their teeth into a great story, well-told. Nile covered his very humble early days, his barely older than him mother, the drugs, the bi-coastal extended family, the moves, the schools, early influences from Coltrane to The Beatles, flute to clarinet to guitar… how Bernard Edwards got him to the Hitmaker Strat and chucking, which has become synonymous with Nile's style. We talked the DHM, the breakdown, the Chic magic as well as the music during and since… producing the top of the top for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Madonna, David Bowie, Duran Duran, still winning Grammys and kicking it with Daft Punk, Beyonce, and Cold Play, to name but a few, 750 MILLION albums worth. Say what? We got the sweetest stories about Michael Jackson… a funny with Keith Richards, a Grace Jones impression, and a scary story about Nile's coke psychosis leading to him bottoming out and getting clean and sober. 31 years worth and counting… That Nile was able to do all that he's done, and it's Herculean - aside from the massive number of hits, the films he's scored, the shows he's played, there's the We Are Family Foundation, Chairing the Songwriters Hall of Fame, receiving the 2024 World Economic Forum's Crystal Award for his extraordinary efforts to make the world a more peaceful, equal, and inclusive place… Nile is a humanist, a gentle soul with a heart of platinum like the records that line his walls. I've always admired, respected, and adored Nile. After reading Le Freak, and spending this time with him, I cherish him all the more. What a man, what a man, what a mighty fine man!

The Governance of FS as a whole affects all of our lives as we saw in 2008 let alone in many individual examples of FS/Fintech businesses failing and losing clients money. In our digital age virtually all of our money is digital and next to no-one sees a share certificate any more so all of our investments are digital. Thus what might appear to be a refined topic for a few is at the heart of all of our lives – money being used for roughly everything and savings equating to money saved for tomorrow. As a result of this central role of money in economies, Boards in FS have always had to be – lets put this mildly – “rather more careful” than Boards of companies which if they fell over would “domino” not very far. Not only do many FS/Fintechs “take care of” clients money but money itself in the current financial model is created out of thin air by banks. Add to these long standing issues the ever-increasing burden on Boards as a whole from the always metastasising Regulatory State, ever-greater minutiae in FS per se and the State using companies to enforce social agendas which even a decade ago would have seemed unlikely/bizarre and we have a very challenging cocktail. Neil has 20 years expe4rience on Boards and Chairing sub-committees of FS and Fintech Boards and is thus well-placed to guide us through this labyrinth. Topics discussed include: Scottish and Irish traditional folk music transitioning from classical piano to the accordion interesting anomalies re accordions – not least of which one has to fill in the bass part oneself musical insights into Scottish vs Irish music learning music as “play these notes” vs “play along with us” a lot of folk musicians cannot read music Neil's career journey the long delay between Basel II and Boards getting with it the felt sense of FS Boards vs “normal” companies – cf FS and Sainsburys looking after other peoples money – fiduciary duty even if you are the equivalent of a corner shop in FS/Fintech you have to have as much governance as the equivalent of Sainsburys – which in retail obviously does not apply the need to cope with all that overhead when your Fintech is still very small Case Study of innovation/Fintech/regulation Banking Alchemy – a broken model of money (see eg LFP085, LFP197, LFP220 and LFP231) leads to a broken banking system which cannot be repaired by any governance as have discussed in many episodes a deep dive into unitary Boards vs sub-Committees of Boards what has driven this the strange situation re independent directors and sub committees where excess do most of the talking yet are technically no on the committee – “it is slightly absurd” the volume of “left-brain” stuff heaped upon FS/Fintech Boards absolutely swamps the Board meeting crowding out creativity in governance and business strategy a comparison of FS vs Airline regulation literally no limit to the amount of over-regulation of FS ever-increasing costs to the consumer as a result and higher risk taking as more people in FS/Fintech are doing non-revenue related activities management by walking around starts failing in the larger organisation where one is more dependent on management perception/spin comparison with quantum world – what is observed by the Board changes as a result of being observed the need to get a feel beyond the management information what are the powers of a NED individually or in a committee the challenge of balancing the need to gain insight and challenge yet not annoy/rile the executives the pressure on the Chairman in these circs “poking your nose in but not poking your fingers in” as summing up the role of the NED 21stC challenges from the whole tsunami of Corporate Governance (and the word literally did not exist from Chaucer up to the 1970s) and “ESG” et al the problem of a “free market” solution to governance and the problem of “bureaucratic rules” solution to governance NSDAP (“the Nazis”) as the inventors of Corporate Governance in 1930s Germany again – cf now? – to impose their political agendas upon companies the abuse of Governance Boards and “guidance” re ESG/DIE etc – the huge pressure to conform to something which is not statutory the imposition of groupthink by regulators yet regulators say groupthink is the biggest risk for Boards… the idea of safetyism and “nothing should ever go wrong” “there is no real difference ultimately between corporate control and corporate creativity” [as the longer term risk is the world is changing and the company does not react appropriately] the “war on meritocracy” the major risk of FS/Fintech Boards is groupthink and agreement re the wisdom of the rules/codes/guidance etc which is imposed upon Companies from outside the Boardroom Advisory Boards, Strategy days that are not minuted as important in these circs to have “unruled” conversations “Board Champions” as the latest pressure from regulators which break down the whole idea of collective responsibility and power of sub-committees Neil's overall advice to FS/Fintech Board members especially younger folk embarking upon their first gigs the importance of human dynamics within the Board – key cruxes is it a good trade being an FS/Fintech Director? non-commercial rewards in the role Neil's shoutouts for both folk music-ing and his own NED role portfolio state right now the Mutual Model of FS as an appealing one And much much more

Our focus today is an update to the GROW model. Something Barry has reframed as the GROWTH model.  In the Arete Coach Podcast episode featuring Barry Goldberg, the evolution of the GROW model into the GROWTH model is the focal point. Goldberg, with his extensive experience in executive and leadership coaching, discusses the need for adaptive coaching methods. He elaborates on the original GROW model, as created by Sir John Whitmore, and comments it was designed for goal-setting and personal development, In Barry's improvement of the model, he introduces the GROWTH model, adding a T and H, which incorporates 'Time' and 'Help' to better suit various coaching scenarios. The podcast delves into the limitations of the original GROW model and the necessity for more comprehensive approaches in coaching. Goldberg emphasizes simplicity and versatility in coaching models, advocating for a balance between structured methods and flexible approaches. The addition of 'Time' and 'Help' in the GROWTH model aims to address practical needs in executive coaching, fostering ideation and strategy development. Goldberg also highlights the role of coaches as facilitators of growth, rather than directors. He underscores the importance of engaging in open, curious conversations, and empowering individuals rather than imposing solutions. This approach reflects the changing landscape of leadership and personal development, as coaching models evolve to meet diverse needs. The episode provides insights into the future direction of coaching models, emphasizing their applicability across different fields. Goldberg's discussion offers valuable perspectives for anyone involved in coaching, leadership, and personal development, showcasing the potential of the GROWTH model in facilitating effective and adaptable coaching strategies. Show Notes: In this episode of Unleashed, Will Bachman interviews Nancy Mackay, founder of MacKay CEO Forums (MC ACO), a peer advisory group that provides confidential peer support groups for CEOs and business owners across Canada. The group aims to populate the world with inspiring leaders by offering confidential peer support groups to hundreds of members. Nancy states that, in today's challenging fast-paced business-world, and with a growing mental-health crisis, leaders need more peer support and trusted advisors. The Mackay community includes over 1200 CEOs, executives, and business owners from various industries across Canada, participating in over 114 person peer learning groups. Over 60 consultants have been trained and certified to offer peer learning support to members, and the leadership team is focused on supporting form Chairs who offer peer learning support. Nancy started her group over fifteen years ago and still Chairs the group. Her group has 14 CEOs from various industries, with revenue sizes ranging from 5 million to 5 billion plus. Most of the groups are for entrepreneurial, privately held individuals who want to grow their businesses. The meetings are confidential, non-competitive, and require six meetings a year for a day, and they hold a 2-day annual retreat. Each meeting features a one-hour speaker, followed by confidential updates where CEOs discuss their biggest issues, challenges, and opportunities related to business, family, and personal. They place issues they want help with on the table, and after the issues are discussed, the group encourages sharing experiences. A Forum that Helps CEOs One of the biggest objections to joining a peer group is the lack of time. However, the reality is that everyone can make time, and having a group of 14 CEOs with a growth mindset can save time and provide support for all issues, including business, family, and personal. All the forum Chairs at MacKay are modern, trusted advisors with extensive experience working with CEOs, executives, and business owners, playing a crucial role in Chairing meetings and retreats, creating a confidential space for CEOs and executives to be vulnerable and succeed in their careers without sacrificing their health and important personal and family relationships.   Nancy shares examples of how peer groups have helped individuals navigate their transitions, such as selling their business, scaling their business, finding talent, and recession and succession planning.  Nancy highlights the importance of segmenting peer groups, with specific groups catering to different types of CEOs, CFOs, HR Rows, and cross-functional executives. These groups ensure that each member's background experience is taken into account, ensuring that everyone is a best fit for the group. The group also address personal and family issues, allowing members to discuss their challenges and successes without sacrificing their health or family relationships. Members can build lifelong friendships and support networks to help them navigate their careers and personal lives. Three Tips to Being an Effective Chair of a Peer Learning Group To be an effective Chair of a peer learning group, Nancy shares three key tips: not being the "star in the room", it should be all about the members. The second tip is to ensure that you create a space of vulnerability where members can share their experiences and mistakes, and remembering that no-one is the "smartest person in the room." The leadership philosophy is about judgment-free and sharing experiences, helping CEOs and executives become masterful at telling stories and being vulnerable; the third tip is to remember that being a Chair is focused on helping people and not just being nice. It's more about challenging them and holding them accountable.  In conclusion, peer learning support provides valuable advice and mindset shifts for CEOs and executives, helping them navigate their transitions, find talent, and build successful cultures. By taking a step back and focusing on the members, Chair members can create a supportive environment for their peers and achieve success in their respective fields. Nancy explains who could apply to become a Chair with the organization. Chairs must have had their own independent consulting practice for at least three years and have over 18 years of experience working with CEOs, executives, and business owners from various industries. The most successful Chairs are partnering with the MacKay CEO Forums and signing up for their certification program to build world-class peer learning groups for CEOs and executives. The MacKay CEO Forums have launched over 100 groups and are constantly evolving and improving. The best fit Chairs have a proven roadmap to success on how to build these groups and achieve Chair mastery. The certification program is experiential learning, not a bootcamp approach, and includes one-on-one coaching, pure learning on a weekly basis, observation, co-Chairing, and they can move on to the Chair Mastery program.  Nancy explains the benefits to joining the MacKay CEO Forums, which provides access to current, relevant, and high-level information through access to a peer group, an annual summit, conferences, content, and expand their business network. In summary, it provides connectivity across forums. Being part of the broader network of the MacKay CEO Forums provides a proven roadmap to success. Forum Chairs are highly rated speakers with MacKay CEO Forums, making it a lucrative opportunity for members to expand their business network and engage with people in the community.  The Origin Story of MacKay CEO Forums Nancy shares the story behind founding the company. She was invited to speak at a CEO peer group meeting in Vancouver. She was the first female speaker invited into the CEO group, and after her presentation, the Chair asked her if she'd like to become the forum Chair. This was at a time when they didn't let women in. However, Nancy instigated the progression to allowing women into the forum. The organization has since grown to include multiple forums and an institution that supports successful consultants and business leaders.   MacKay CEO Forums is a beneficial corporation.  It takes a stand on diversity, equality, and inclusion. For the first five years, she ran the business together with her husband and business partner. She decided that the world needed more peer support and focused on building ten of these CEO groups across Canada. The goal is to populate the world with inspiring leaders, to find other like-minded consultants who have a passion for helping business leaders, and she wants to help them achieve success with their business. They are currently on the path to having 10,000 members across the world.  The MacKay peer learning group for business leaders is primarily based in Canada. They have a Chair capability assessment that allows individuals to self-assess their suitability for the role. The forum is currently looking to partner with consultants based in BC, Alberta, and Ontario as its primary areas for growth over the next year. Common Mistakes Consultants Make Nancy shares the common errors consultants make and emphasizes the importance of sharing experiences and stories, rather than giving advice or telling people what to do. This creates a space for a different approach to influencing and creates more inspiration for people to take action. The forum's leadership philosophy includes the Mackay Mastery Model for Inspired Leadership, which focuses on inspiring oneself every day. Chairs are trained in time mastery, Eagle mastery, passion, mastering innovation, mastery, social contribution, mastery, and Health Mastery. To keep meetings on track, Chairs should use the right language when a conversation feels meandering or getting off track. They should start and end on time, respect people's time, and be intentional about how they spend their time. Time mastery and goal setting are part of the organization's culture, and members expect the Chair to use a timer during peer group meetings. Introduction:  Brendan Lenihan is a professional non-executive director, a management consultant, a chartered accountant, and an accredited mediator.  Previously he was a Partner with Andersen (with whom he worked in Dublin and New York) Through his consultancy, Navigo Consulting, he provides strategic, financial and governance advice to clients in Ireland and the UK as well as having a non-executive director portfolio in private companies, public bodies and charities. His is currently; Chair of Irish International Trading Corporation Cork plc which is 103 years in business and turns over in excess of €80m per annum, as well as Chairing the Advisory Board of Regan Wall, a business law firm specialising in mergers and acquisitions.      Chair of Good Shepherd Cork, a sizeable charity providing emergency accommodation and services to homeless and vulnerable families.   Podcast episode Summary:  This podcast explores the nature of Boards, our understanding of the role of Boards, and whether we can consider boards are Teams. In addition, Brendan illuminates the constraints on boards and the potential that exists to support boards be more effective. Points made throughout the Episode:   o    Brendan has led a portfolio career to date. An accountant by nature but he is more than that. His eclectic portfolio and experience has meant that he has learnt how to sell, navigate & supervise professional service bodies. o    Brendan doesn't rush towards fires but he has noticed that he ends up in the thick of things. Around the time of the crash in 2008 in NYC he was involved in the Enron Scandal and as Finance Director for a Property Company he was instrumental in supporting them through the crash. Similarly he was involved with the HSE for 4 years through Covid 19- where he put his consultancy experience where it was most needed. o    10 years ago as the President of the Chartered Institute of Ireland it became clear to Brendan that accountants do 3 things,  they measure, communicate and decide. Brendan observed that if someone like him, even with his vast experience, were to survive he needed to move up the value chain to where decision making and governance happened. Decision making is the business Brendan is now in. o    The Myths of Boards: The great man myth and the myth of omnipotence of boards is very much alive.  The myth that the CEO is the eternal fountain of all knowledge and the organisation pivots around him/her is similarly active. The truth is that the health and direction of a company cannot revolve around one person, especially as CEOs come and go. There is also a great myth that board work is easy, you turn up, listen and go away. That is not the case. o    There is a grain of truth in the idea that the smartest group of people are the executives and the wise comprise the board. The smart and wise sit down together and generally the wise people approve everything the smart people have to say, although it is not always the case. The smartest and wisest is the relationship between the Chair and the CEO. There is some grain of truth to all of this but it should not be how people think for a heathy, dynamic and growing organisation to operate. o    A lot of people end up on boards because of their success in role and the because of their functional expertise but often they do not know what the role of a board member is. o    A healthy board is one that has a very clear sense of its role & its purpose. Many boards have an impoverished view of what their role is as a Board. Often  they encapsulate their role as their function to support management. That definition is too simplistic and too narrow a definition. o    A healthy Board is one you cannot assess on paper. As well as a board appreciating their role & purpose it is also crucial that Board members understand each other as people. A healthy board is one where the relationships are really strong, where people can deal with conflict and differences of style etc. o    What defines Governance? This is the starting conversation with new boards or new board members. Two central elements to Governance (based off an OECD definition) The first element is the notion that Governance is a network of relationships. The relations within the entity such as staff, the board and the executive management team as well as the relations outside of the entity such as shareholders, funders, regulators, customer as well as suppliers. The first role of a Board is to understand and add to the strength and functioning of these relationships. The second element is about the setting of objectives. What objectives is the entitiy trying to achieve, how are the objectives set and then how  are they managed and monitored. o    The degree to which this network of relations is worked governs the degree to  which the entity achieves its objectives. That is the role of Governance. o    Two further dimensions have to be considered. One, the compliance perspective to understand and appreciate the rules of the road with respect to this network of relations and two, a performance dimension to understand what travels over and between the network of relations. Brendan makes the point that too often people assume governance is simply about compliance and not about the management of ideas & the performance of objectives across this network of relations. o    Management has a governance role as well but this podcast is focused on the top level of the organisation, the Board. o    If you are sitting on a board you should be focused on the strength and productivity of the network of relations described above. In addition a Board needs to question what objectives are being set and whether they are being achieved. o    For the person in the street the subject of Governance comes down to the simple question, who is in charge? o    The interrelation between the work of the board and management is often confused and ambiguous. The biggest problem Brendan sees in his work is that folks on boards devolve everything to management. o    The Board should in fact be setting objectives, be providing Leadership and operating with an amount of oversight where the board asks whether the organisation is on plan, getting close to its objectives etc. o    Many board members especially new board members do not realise the many functions of boards and the many mindsets involved. 3 different mindsets prevail on Boards. The first deals with Leadership the second the entity strategy and the third oversight & compliance. Compliance for example requires an evidential focus. Strategy involves a creative process, a heavily laden communication process and psychological process. Oversight is where you are asked to form an opinion and decision based on the question “are we there yet?” o    Boards mix those 3 roles into one combined headset. o    Too often too, a board may be comprised of formerly successful executives you end up Micro Managing senior executives and end up squashing capability. o    In the absence of understanding of the many headsets required of boards duplication, frustration and missed opportunities are inevitable. o    The same is true of teams where there is lack of resources and lack of role clarity. This absence drives conflict and dissent and is especially evident at the interface between senior executives and the board. o    Board members end up on Boards because of their industry expertise, functional expertise and not because they know much about Governance & especially corporate governance. o    The rise of concern about Culture and the question about who is responsible for Culture in an organisation has contributed to the confusion that abounds. The idea that the Board is in fact responsible has really stretched and challenged boards. o    It is not clear what the headset needs to be with respect to the role of Culture setting  but it is clear from Corporate Governance that the responsibility lies with the Board. o    Making the interventions that shape Culture is the honours question that boards are struggling with today. o    The board is responsible for there being a well-defined strategy and it is also responsible for the culture of the organisation that is appropriate for its environment and strategic objectives. o    Boards are decision factories with very limited opening hours o    Consider for example the Public Broadcaster here in Ireland which has just faced a critical Corporate Governance crisis this year.  Its board would have met about 9 times in the year which is incredibly limited opening hours to get through an enormous remit. o    There is a real paucity of time that drives a lot of the dynamics of boards. o    Brendan works with boards to become as efficient as is possible with oversight and monitoring as a role to free up time to spend on Strategy, Culture and Leadership conversations. o    There are ways at releasing time and working smartly as a board but a week Chair and a board that does not appreciate its full role will fudge and burn time ineffectively leading to frustration and embarrassment as  likely possible negative outcomes. o    Brendan works with Boards by sharing simple ideas to support the various roles they play. Leadership for example is about two simple ideas, having a plan and doing the right things. So Leadership from the Board perspective is about making sure there is a plan and challenging the board and executive to be curious about the right things to discuss. o    Too often the senior management team is preoccupied with being busy 60-70 hours a week and they do not often get the opportunity to see the big things on the fringe about which they need to discuss. o    There is so much value a board can bring in terms of ideas, opportunities and even concerns that the executive team might miss. To be a good leader you have to be in the dance of the work but you also need to be on the balcony & able to scan the horizon and outside world. o    Boards can disempower themselves by not understanding their role, similarly they can also disempower their role by handing all power over to management and they can be disenfranchised by the lack of time, ability to meet and the resources at their disposal such as a budget to support Board training. o    Brendan gets asked to assist boards where Governance has gone off the rails and the criticism is made that the board was asleep at the wheel. Often the board has chosen a minimum level of participation or hibernation, which often surprises people. o    The lack of opening hours or time a Board spends together often means that the requisite reflection and quality control of their work is missing. The simple and evocative questions like “what worked” “what could we do differently next time” often do not happen. o    The Titular Monarchy Position is often witnessed on Boards. Every week the Prime Minister of the UK visits the Monarch. The Monarch has 3 rights, the right to be consulted, the right to be supportive of the Government and the right to warn if necessary. That is it. Many Boards operate the same way as a Titular Monarchy where they expect to be consulted, offer support to the executive team and are a bit avuncular when they are concerned about something. This is a recipe for disaster for a Board, because all power has been handed to management  o    A contemporary example here in Ireland includes the FAI (Football association of Ireland) who became a puppet board to management. The CEO had all power. o    The list of matters reserved is the list of decisions that only the board can make. Brendan will often ask boards whether they know these decision rights and he knows a weak board will not know what is on this list whereas a strong board will. o    A lot of basic structures that comprise sound principles and conditions for success for Boards are missing. o    There is a huge opportunity for Boards to benefit from some of the ideas housed in Team Coaching. o    It is not conclusive that a Board is a team but its performance could benefit if it thought more about teaming. o    The role of the Chair is absolutely vital. o    Boards are by their nature a collective and the Chair is first amongst equals. When boards break down it is almost always about the people and relationship issues. A good Chair is equipped to bring people insight, an understanding of styles and an ability to mediate if necessary, to support the effective running of the board. o    If the Chair is open to improvement in what Brendan calls the decision making factory then lots can happen. o    Brendan does not enter a board to discuss what he calls the plumbing or Compliance etc. His value is in helping a board get clear about the decisions they have to make, the headsets they have to be in and also the norms they have to exhibit. o    Brendan usually engages with Boards around practical decision dilemmas. He also employs a model to share 10 behaviours that he would expect every board member to display. The 10 behaviours from this model include Power, Dogmatism, Emotion, Decisiveness, Verbal Contribution, Civility, Preparedness, Knowledge, Trust & Director Tenure. With each of these behaviours there is a golden mean. o    If any of these 10 behaviours are out of whack the social system will be out of balance. For example if the Board has too much trust in the Management Team it will be gullible. o    Oftentimes these behaviours are out of balance and they remain unchallenged or unaddressed until there is a big car crash, a claim or other disaster. o    Brendan would like to see greater understanding and clarity about the  role of Boards. He would like the difference that can be seen on boards between board members to be empowered. He would also like to see a greater awareness of bias & to see more professional scepticism on Boards. o    The big problem with Boards, with biases present is over confidence.  Brendan recalls the Financial Crisis of 2008 where many boards, filled with good people,  simply grew over confident. o    Brendan wishes that Boards would allow Professional consultants, Coaches to better serve them than they do currently, to get that team working as a Board to work better together at a human level, on a decision making level and on a structural level so that organisations can achieve their objectives more quickly and efficiently. o    There exist a lot of obstacles to these desires as Brendan sees it. Often there exists a lack of openness, to examine Board performance and  to take advice or to think differently. Brendan opines the lack of diversity on boards, the range of people entering boards is still, he believes too narrow. The gender balance is better but it is still not where it could be and could be if boards had better advice, tools and more openness to improvement. o    Brendan shares two case studies, boards he worked with where governance had gone off the rails. Brendan through his work helped both to work out their roles, to define a clear strategy and to understand the interdepended nature between the board and management teams. He shared structure and processes over time to improve the decision making and relations on the Board and between the Management teams. o    Boards cover 3 things; Strategy, Finance and People. Strategy is often misunderstood,  Finance is often exceedingly well covered and the people piece is the lease attended. o    Since the Global Financial Crisis a number of tools have evolved to do what is known as a cultural audit. Boards are often shocked that people like Brendan can hold up a mirror and identify what the culture is at an organisation. o    Brendan shares his definition of what comprises Culture. Visible behaviours, behaviours people will see, the group dynamic and then the mindsets that drive these behaviours. There are tools used to hold to hold up a mirror and share what Mindset ideas are being operated. Brendan shares the example of the police force here in Ireland, An Garda Siochana. Its culture was audited and it revealed the high minded ideas that were housed in the annual report with the actual mindset that actually prevailed. The gap proved to be staggering. o    You have to ask what is going on in the narrative of an organisation, the psychology of an organisation, the group dynamic to shape its culture? It is important to tap into these dimensions to shape an appropriate culture, appropriate to the market and context in which an entity lives & it has to be attuned to what the organisation says it wants to achieve in terms of its objectives and plan. o    This is the role of Boards and the value they can provide. o    Brendan makes the distinction between Boards who operate answering the Pass Questions in an Irish Leaving Certificate and a Board that addresses the Honours questions, Culture, Leadership, Strategy and Oversight. o    The Board is a team and it is also a Team with the Executive Directors & staff managing the many relations that comprise the social system in a bid to achieve its goals. o    Brendan would love to see more conversation of this nature to increase awareness & understanding of Boards and board effectiveness and to show case the many tools and techniques that have evolved to support teams and boards to overcome bias in decision making.     Resources mentioned across this podcast   ·         www.navigo.ie

As of 6:30 PM EDT, 12 March 2023, the Federal Goverment had intervened to guarantee depositor funds, allowing bank customers to access funds in time to make payroll on 3/15; the 'ides of march.' If those words cast a dark omen of the future, they ought to. In this episode, we explore what economic and financial contagion risks are and what are the causes, roots, and factors that seem to set wildfire to human behavior. We explore the happenings this past week with the death spiral and failure of Silicon Valley Bank, one of the oldest and largest banks serving the private equity and venture capital community. We revisit a play-by-play of the collapse of SVB from the point of view of the CEO and a customer depositor at the bank, and their different experiences. Importantly, we revisit prior financial crises to explore similarities and differences, and, review what the research suggests business leaders can do to prepare and protect themselves from foreseeable events. A list of 10 action items is provided for executive coaches, business owners, CEOs, and C-level executives to navigate at this time.
