The Spencer Lodge Podcast
#403 From Top of Her Class in America to Vice Chancellor | Dr. Amina Al Marzouqi, a Life Built on Discipline and Service

In 1981, a young Emirati woman convinced her father to let her travel to America to study. On her very first exam in a class of 75 Americans, she came first. That woman is now Vice Chancellor of the University of Sharjah.  Dr. Amina Al Marzouqi's story is one of the most inspiring journeys Spencer has covered on this show. After graduating in the US, she came home and was made deputy director of the UAE's entire primary healthcare system. She did her master's degree and went on to help build 106 primary healthcare centres that earned WHO recognition. Twenty four years in education later, she leads one of the UAE's most respected universities.  This conversation is full of wisdom. Dr. Amina talks about what university is really for, why a great teacher matters more than a famous institution, and why she believes students need less lecturing and more genuine interaction. She shares what it was like chairing her university's Covid response committee and supporting thousands of students through lockdown. She reflects on running a campus during the missile attacks, why students felt safer on university grounds than anywhere else, and the quiet strength the UAE revealed when it mattered most.    Timestamps:  0:00 How hard is it to be a student today with AI, mental health pressure and a region in conflict  1:30 Chairing the Covid response committee and what students needed most during lockdown  8:02 What university is really for: independence, critical thinking and self discipline  12:22 The teacher makes the subject: why a great lecturer matters more than a great university  18:13 Arriving in America in 1981, defying her father, and her first mixed classroom  22:24 The professor who saw her potential and the exam that changed everything  27:40 No management training, one year to get a master's, and building the UAE's healthcare system from scratch  31:48 AI as a tool not a threat and the careers students are not talking about yet  37:47 How the missile crisis made students more thoughtful and more mature  48:58 From mandatory cousin marriages to confronting a queue jumper: how UAE culture has shifted  51:31 The UAE's defence strength that nobody knew existed until it mattered  58:52 Defining success as impact and why she hates exams and textbooks  1:04:26 Quickfire Questions    Follow Spencer Lodge on Social Media  https://www.instagram.com/madeindubaipodcast/?hl=en  https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61586194260076  https://www.instagram.com/spencer.lodge/?hl=en  https://www.tiktok.com/@spencer.lodge  https://www.linkedin.com/in/spencerlodge/  https://www.youtube.com/c/SpencerLodgeTV  https://www.facebook.com/spencerlodgeofficial/    Follow Dr. Amina Al Marzouqi on Social Media  https://www.linkedin.com/in/amina-al-marzouqi-7b286b151/  https://www.linkedin.com/school/university-of-sharjah/

I also invited Mary, but she is out of town.M:What a pity! I was hoping she would come.(Text 2)M: If I were you, I'd just walk to work. It would take you about 20 minutes. Riding a bike is a good choice, too.W: I agree. But this week my husband is away on business, so I have to drive my kids to school before I go to work. I'm pressed for time, you know.(Text 3)W:It's 8:30, Dave, and you're going to be late for the meeting.M:Oh, my! I just have half an hour left. I can't believe I slept for 10 hours.(Text 4)M:Hi, Helen. Where are you off to?W: To the library. I've got a history paper due next week, and need to do some reading.(Text 5)W:Thank goodness! You're still here.M:What's up?W: I need your signature for this document. It's urgent.(Text 6)W:Are you all alone, Tom? Why not ask Mike to help you collect money for the Children's Centre?M:Well, he's working on his lab report. Could you come?W:I'd love to, but I won't be available until next week. I think Cathy will have some free time this week. Do you want me to pass on a message?M:That'd be nice. Thanks, Jane.(Text 7)W:Are you leaving for the railway station now, Jack? It's so early.M:Just avoiding the rush hour traffic. I don't want to be late.W: So you have to wait for about two hours? I don't think there's scenery to look at.M:Don't worry! I'll take a book with me.W:It's too noisy to read in the railway station. I would usually look around the shops while waiting for the train.M:But I've already got all the gifts for my parents and sisters. I don't need to buy anything. If I really can't focus on the book, I may phone up some friends I haven't talked to in a while.W:That's a nice idea. Betty told me last time that she often spent the waiting time writing a to-do list so that she'd not miss anything in the days to come.M:That's an awesome idea. I'll surely do that. Thank you, Judy. See you next year.W:Bye!(Text 8)W:Hi, Bill. You look troubled. What's the matter?M:Hi, Grace. I have a big decision to make. My uncle offered me a job as the lead engineer at his service station, and with good pay.W:That's wonderful, but are you going to quit college?M:That's exactly the problem. One side of me says, “Oh, go ahead! You can go back to collegeanytime. What job could you get after college that would pay you $15 an hour? That's $30,000 a year!”W:And then?M:And then, the other side says, “Hold it, not so fast! For all those years you were in the army, you planned to go to college so that you would have many job possibilities to choose from. You've planned your whole life around going to college. And now…”W: I can see it. It's true that with your experience in the army, you could do excellent work repairing cars if you accept the job. But you are doing very well now. Just think of the future. You will get better jobs.(Text 9)W:Hey, John. Can I talk to you for a minute?M:Sure, what's up?W: I wanted to let you know about a book club I joined a few months ago. I know you do a lot of reading, so I thought you might want to come with me next month.M:Oh, that sounds like fun. When does the group meet?W:Usually the last Saturday of the month at 7:30 in the evening. Is that too late for you?M:No, I think that's okay. What do you talk about in the group?W:Well, every month we choose a new book. And then during the next meeting, we discuss it.M:What books have you read?W:Quite a lot. Recently we have read The Beautiful Mind and The Great Gatsby. Now we are reading The Kite Runner.M:The Kite Runner ? I've heard that's a good book. What's it about?W:It's about a boy who grows up in Afghanistan during the 1980s.M:That sounds interesting. I'd love to come.W:Great! The next meeting will be held in two weeks, so you still have time to read the book.(Text 10)W:Today, let's begin with note-taking techniques. Note-taking is an important skill not only for taking classes, but also for doing your job in the future.I'd like to draw your attention to certain points about taking notes. First, remember that note-taking should be 75% listening and only 25% writing, so don't try to write down every single word the teacher says. Ignore what is unimportant and write in phrases, not complete sentences. Second, leave spaces and lines between main ideas. You may want to add some information later. I find that some of you are very good at making use of color, mapping web, and symbols such as arrows, circles and boxes. I highly recommend these tools to all of you, because the use of them makes the outline more easily readable and interesting than the blocks of text. It also makes sure that important words stand out. Here are some examples.

I didn't hear the bell, or I would have left earlier.Text2M: Hello, my name is Jack. I need to get in shape. How do I register for the classes?M: We'll need you to join the gym, and then you could find out which classes fit your schedule the best.Text3W: I'll see you at the theater.M: Better still, let's meet in the Red Lion bar to have a nice little talk.W: Good idea. And I'm calling to ask about the position advertised in Friday's Daily Mail.M: Yes, the position is still open. You could come over and have a talk with us.Text5M: I have an extra ticket to the concert tonight. Would you like to join me?W: Thanks! But I already have one. You can ask Emily. She might be interested.Text6W: Did you know James went out of business?M: Really? When was that?W: Last month.M: That's too bad. He had owned that business for 15 years. What happened?W: I don't know. But life must be pretty tough for his family now. His sons are still so young; one is 13, and the other is ten.M: Well, maybe things are not as bad as they seem to be.W: I hope so.Text7W: Guess what? My mother's decided to go back to school!M: Why?W: Well, she always loved art, but learned business administration at college because her parents thought it was difficult for an artist to find a job.M: So, she wants to study art now?W: Yeah, oil painting. It's been her dream for a long time.M: It's nice to return to learn what she loves. But, Kate, I still think old age should be about peace and relaxation.Hurrying to school every day and having to pass exams sounds a bit too much for her.W: You know, she retired last year and I'm leaving for the university soon. She needs to find something interesting to do.M: Well, maybe, if it's what she wants.Text8M: Dear listeners, for today's show, I have with my colleague, Mary Laney. She has been a radio TV reporter for many years.Mary, welcome to our show.W: It's a pleasure to be here.M: Would you please tell our listeners who most influenced your decision to become are porter?W: Both my parents had a great influence upon my choices of work. Instead of trying to pick out a job for me, they helped me learn those things that led me to it.M: How did they do that?W: My father always told me that an education was one of the greatest advantages I could have, one that would always stay with me. He used to tell me that readers were leaders, and encouraged me to read all I could. As a result, I've always kept up with the newspapers, faithfully read news magazines and learned to really enjoy books, all of which have been an invaluable help to me in radio and television reporting.M: What about your mother?W: Well, my mother helped me in a much different way.Text9M: We all know that exercise is good for us. But sometimes it seems too hard to leave the sofa.W: I can see that. You seldom do exercise.M: Plus, having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn't really help our motivation much.W: Don't be discouraged. Now, a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn't have to be that demanding.Jacob Sattelmair, from Harvard University, has done a study into how much exercise is needed to lower the risk of heart attacks.M: Hmm...interesting.W: The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes a week of exercise had a 20%lower risk of death due to heart disease. Still, the people who exercise 150 minutes a week did pretty well, too, lowering their death risk by 14%.M: And what about the people who exercise half as much as that, like what I probably do? Does that help?W: Of course. Even 15 minutes would help.Text10W: Here is a piece of news for bird lovers.Scientists have painted a long road red, yellow, and white. They hope to discourage the seabirds from wandering onto the highway. "The area is home to large crowds of birds that come to stay for the season. Young birds are often attracted to the warm road surface and get killed by the traffic,"biology student Hannah tells the broadcaster. The youngsters' feathers are brown in color. The dark-colored road surface makes the youngsters hard to be noticed. As the number of tourists has grown, so has the amount of traffic on the roads. Biologist Kristin says the plan is to see how the birds respond to the multi-colored road this summer. And if it works, the idea could spread to other parts of the country.

This week, Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Sue Pellegrino. The two talk about the bold journey of acquiring and leading Everest Discovery, the critical importance of compassionate leadership in the high-stress world of eDiscovery and litigation support, and how building a strong, values-driven team has helped grow and sustain the business. In this episode, we discuss: How Sue Pellegrino transitioned from restoring classic cars and a background in accounting/business administration to leading a company in the eDiscovery field. What she changed as a leader: creating a company that values work-life balance, cross-training, and multiple people who can do the same task so the team can support one another and step away when needed. When Sue Pellegrino took over Everest Discovery, the initial challenges of entering a new, technology-driven industry. Why compassion, open-door leadership, and work-life balance are essential values Sue Pellegrino wanted to instill in her company's culture. How she leads with an open-door mindset in a fully remote environment, making herself accessible by Teams, text, phone, and calendar, and building a culture where people feel safe bringing both work and personal concerns to the table. Sue Pellegrino, Owner, President, and CFO, Everest Discovery From restoring classic cars to serving as an accounting executive and entrepreneur in eDiscovery, Sue Pellegrino has challenged the status quo around what a woman leader can be her whole life.  Sue has spent her career managing organizations' finances, ranging from publicly traded companies to regional enterprises and small businesses.  Now, she runs Everest Discovery, taking the business to new heights.  The humble beginnings in the mailroom at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, began Sue Pellegrino's journey to the top, which is a testament to her determination and work ethic.  She steadily climbed the corporate ladder, eventually becoming an Accounts Payable Supervisor overseeing all vendors' accounts.  Her career then led her to the role of CFO at Copy Secure, a regional paper and eDiscovery solutions company.  Here, she led the accounting, human resources, investor relations, and tax departments, playing a pivotal role in growing the company to seven-figure revenues before its acquisition by KLDiscovery.  With over 25 years of experience in accounting and business administration, and a decade in eDiscovery, Sue Pellegrino is a seasoned leader.  She now leads a dedicated team of litigation support specialists at Everest Discovery, ensuring the company provides the highest quality and most cost-effective solutions to its clients.  Under her guidance, Everest's revenue has soared by 42%, and its reach has expanded across the country and even South America. As a female business owner, Sue is a diversity, equity, and inclusion champion, proud to devote her time and resources to organizations that advocate for marginalized and underrepresented groups.  She is the Director of the Philadelphia Chapter of Women in eDiscovery, serves on the Philadelphia Regional Steering Committee of Women Owned Law as well as Chairing the Membership and Marketing Committees and VP of the Executive Board, and is an active member of the National Association of Women Business Owners' Philadelphia Chapter.  In addition, for 10+ years, Sue has been a vocal fundraiser and volunteer for Camp Achieve, a summer camp for youth with epilepsy.  Sue is also a classic car enthusiast who learned to work on cars with her dad from a young age.  She recently rebuilt a custom 1966 Fastback Mustang, an accomplishment that resulted in first-place trophies at car shows and was featured in MotorTrend magazine.  In recognition of her outstanding achievements, Sue was honored as a 2024 Enterprising Women of the Year, Corporate Counsel Business Journal (CCBJ) 2024 50 Women to Watch, 2025 Class of Top 100 Women to KNOW in America and Philadelphia Business Journal's 2025 Corporate Leadership Award Honoree.  She recently was recognized with the Charley and Peggy Roach Founders' Award by the Epilepsy Foundation Eastern Pennsylvania and received the Distinguished Member Service Award from Women Owned Law. And, of course, her bulldog Louie is never far from her side. Website: https://everestdiscovery.com/ Social Media Links: https://www.linkedin.com/in/suepellegrino/

Episode #255 features Andrew Fraser, Chair of Bank of Queensland, Chancellor of Griffith University, President of Motorsport Australia, and former Deputy Premier and Treasurer of the state of Queensland. In conversation with Vidit Agarwal, Andrew shares his journey — from entering politics young and rising rapidly to the top of Queensland Government, to the very bitter public loss that ended his political career, becoming a stay-at-home dad in the aftermath, and the reinvention that led him to some of Australia's most significant boardrooms. He breaks down what that period of collapse taught him about ego, judgment and sustainable leadership, how he now thinks through complex strategic decisions, why he uses sport constantly as a metaphor for teams and performance, the importance of “keeping up the chat” as a leader, and the revealing question he asks every new hire to test for self-awareness and honesty. Andrew also unpacks the realities of chairing major institutions, transitioning from operator to governance, and how Australia should think about leadership, sovereignty and long-term competitiveness. Send us a textService work in AA recovery isn't about giving back - it's about belonging, commitment, and staying sober. "I don't even drink coffee.""That's fine. You haven't been nominated to drink coffee. You've been nominated to make coffee."Steve heard this exchange at his Thursday night men's meeting, and it might be the greatest line about service work ever spoken. Because that's exactly what service work is - doing something that isn't about you, that gets you connected, that gets you showing up.In this episode, Matt and Steve dig into service work in recovery - what it is, why people are afraid of it, and why it might be one of the most important parts of staying sober that nobody talks about enough.Matt opens up about his early motivation for service work, and it wasn't the noble "giving back" thing everyone talks about. It was simpler: "I wanted to feel like I belonged." He shares the story of being a door greeter at the Tuesday night Forbes Street meeting - scared out of his mind, showing up 30 minutes early every week, hugging everyone who walked in. By the end of 5 weeks, he knew everyone in that room. That's the power of service work.Steve talks about his journey from cleaning ashtrays and taking out trash at his Friday night men's meeting to doing district-level work 15+ years later. But here's what he says: "The most rewarding service work is still at the meeting level - because that's where you meet the new alcoholic, the fresh alcoholic who just came out of rehab or is just looking for a meeting."We break down what service work actually looks like:The basics: Putting away chairs, breaking down tables, making coffeeThe commitments: Chairing meetings, being treasurer, being secretaryThe next level: GSR (General Service Representative), district workThe often-overlooked one: Driving people to meetingsMatt shares the "dirty little secret" about service work: it gets you to go to meetings. When you have a commitment - coffee maker, chairperson, door greeter - you show up. You don't bail because you don't feel like it. You're expected to be there, so you go. And that commitment to the meeting becomes a commitment to your sobriety.Steve talks about why he keeps taking service commitments even after 15+ years: "It makes me part of that meeting so much more quickly. This Wednesday noon meeting, I've only been going for about a year and a half, and there are people who've been there for 20 years. But taking the coffee commitment puts me in as part of that group way faster than if I just show up and never do anything."We also tackle the fears people have about service work:"I'm too new" (Matt's fear early on)"I'll do it wrong" (Matt's coffee-making anxiety)"People will judge me"The truth: The stakes are incredibly low. You can't really screw this up.Plus: The story of Ted S. filling the entire percolator basket with coffee grounds because he'd never made coffee before (that's one STRONG cup), why the phone weighs 500 pounds but picking someone up for a meeting is huge service work, and Matt's realization that he never volunteered for coffee at the Monday meeting because he doesn't drink coffee there (problem solved - he's volunteering now).If you're new to recovery and wondering if you should takeSupport the show

Mothers Against GenocideThis column makes no apologies for writing so much about the genocide in Palestine and the urgent need for ceasefires and a peace process.  At least 14,000 babies face imminent death from starvation. Over 60,000 Palestinian children, women, men have been killed, including more than 4,000 since Israel ended its ceasefire in March. One especially harrowing example of Israel's murder machine at work was the deliberate targeting last Friday of the family home of Hamdi and Walaa al-Najjar, two doctors who work at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis. As Hamdi was at work nine of her ten children were killed. Her husband and a 10th child was left critically ill.Mothers Against Genocide have stood up against this savagery and for the rights of the Palestinian people. Sue Pentel and Martine McCullough are active in this campaign. Sue has been a political activist all her life. My earliest memory of her is as a member of Women against Imperialism over 40 years ago. Sue is a Gaeilgeoir who has worked for decades promoting the education of our young people through the medium of Irish. She is also a committed advocate for the rights of the people of Palestine and last weekend she and her friend Martine were arrested by the PSNI and charged with ‘criminal damage' to an ATM at Barclays Bank in Castle Place in Belfast City Centre. Nile Rogers of Chic Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson This sit-down with my old friend, multiple Grammy Winner, Rock & Roll Hall Inductee, Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee, composer, producer, arranger, and guitarist, Nile Rogers, is SOLID GOLD… more like triple platinum. Even though we never exchanged more than a few words in the handful of times he graced my jams back in the day, there was always DHM (deep hidden meaning), as there always is with Nile. This day, we got to that and so much more. STORIES! Oh my lord, No one tells ‘em like Nile. Case in point, his tome, Le Freak, may be the greatest memoir I've read. I could not put the thing down. When was the last time I read a book cover to cover in less than 24 hours? A rare score on Amazon these days, Nile's assured he'll be updating and republishing. It's a MUST-read for music fans, flower children, and anyone who loves to sink their teeth into a great story, well-told. Nile covered his very humble early days, his barely older than him mother, the drugs, the bi-coastal extended family, the moves, the schools, early influences from Coltrane to The Beatles, flute to clarinet to guitar… how Bernard Edwards got him to the Hitmaker Strat and chucking, which has become synonymous with Nile's style. We talked the DHM, the breakdown, the Chic magic as well as the music during and since… producing the top of the top for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Madonna, David Bowie, Duran Duran, still winning Grammys and kicking it with Daft Punk, Beyonce, and Cold Play, to name but a few, 750 MILLION albums worth. Say what? We got the sweetest stories about Michael Jackson… a funny with Keith Richards, a Grace Jones impression, and a scary story about Nile's coke psychosis leading to him bottoming out and getting clean and sober. 31 years worth and counting… That Nile was able to do all that he's done, and it's Herculean - aside from the massive number of hits, the films he's scored, the shows he's played, there's the We Are Family Foundation, Chairing the Songwriters Hall of Fame, receiving the 2024 World Economic Forum's Crystal Award for his extraordinary efforts to make the world a more peaceful, equal, and inclusive place… Nile is a humanist, a gentle soul with a heart of platinum like the records that line his walls. I've always admired, respected, and adored Nile. After reading Le Freak, and spending this time with him, I cherish him all the more. What a man, what a man, what a mighty fine man!

Many liberals believe that in recent years we have seen an erosion of the right to air unpopular opinions without the risk of being cancelled. This is the audio of a talk I gave yesterday for Community Governance Aotearoa on the topic of Chairing meetings and with a focus on AGMs.  I do a lot of support for boards, companies, trusts and others in goverance in my work as a partner at Parry Field Lawyers so it was a pleasure to talk on this topic.  In it share my thoughts on this area and outline 20 principles that are relevant to consider when you come to your role as Chair. More resources that Community Goverannce Aotearoa provide are here (thanks for the chance to share Rose, April, Elyse and team) https://communitygovernance.org.nz/ If this helps you then why not share with one other person? The 20 principles will be uploaded here and the other resource mentioned in talk on chairing meetings: https://www.parryfield.com/advisory/governance/governance-essentials/

Goldberg, with his extensive experience in executive and leadership coaching, discusses the need for adaptive coaching methods. He elaborates on the original GROW model, as created by Sir John Whitmore, and comments it was designed for goal-setting and personal development, In Barry's improvement of the model, he introduces the GROWTH model, adding a T and H, which incorporates 'Time' and 'Help' to better suit various coaching scenarios. The podcast delves into the limitations of the original GROW model and the necessity for more comprehensive approaches in coaching. Goldberg emphasizes simplicity and versatility in coaching models, advocating for a balance between structured methods and flexible approaches. The addition of 'Time' and 'Help' in the GROWTH model aims to address practical needs in executive coaching, fostering ideation and strategy development. Goldberg also highlights the role of coaches as facilitators of growth, rather than directors. He underscores the importance of engaging in open, curious conversations, and empowering individuals rather than imposing solutions. This approach reflects the changing landscape of leadership and personal development, as coaching models evolve to meet diverse needs. The episode provides insights into the future direction of coaching models, emphasizing their applicability across different fields. Goldberg's discussion offers valuable perspectives for anyone involved in coaching, leadership, and personal development, showcasing the potential of the GROWTH model in facilitating effective and adaptable coaching strategies.
