We're in Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa Countdown! To keep you company while you slowly lose your mind, we're re-running some of our favorite holiday episodes. This week we're revisiting our interview with Susan Katz Miller, author of THE INTERFAITH FAMILY JOURNAL. The holidays are always intense, and if your family is an intersection of multiple traditions, it can really ratchet up the pressure for perfection times two. Which is when it's time to maintain perspective. As Susan explains: “I try to help people to understand that if they're having conflict often, it's not about religious difference. It's not about theology. It's not about whether there was an actual physical resurrection or not. It's usually about whether to put the fried onions on the green bean casserole or not.” In this episode we discuss -why every family is an interfaith family -how to reduce conflict about traditions with your spouse's extended family -how to help your spouse when the hard feelings are on your family's side -how to push back on the pressure to do “both” traditions perfectly -how to help your kids navigate being of a different faith than most people in your community -how to handle it when you're observant but your spouse is not (or vice versa) -the resentment that can occur when the mom in a family is expected to carry the weight of passing on a religious tradition that's not even hers It's worth it to have the conversations, do the work, and delineate a “sacred circle” that works for your immediate family. As Susan explains, when you and your spouse come from different traditions, “you're going to be doing the work anyhow.” But challenging your own mindset and context is also an incredible opportunity for growth– even if the way your spouse's family opens their holiday gifts is completely and totally wrong.  Here are links to some other writing on the topic we discuss in this episode:  -Pew Research Center: Why America's ‘nones' don't identify with a religion -Stina Kielsmeier-Cook: Blessed Are the Nones: Mixed-Faith Marriage and My Search for Spiritual Community: https://bookshop.org/a/12099/9780830848270 -Buy THE INTERFAITH FAMILY JOURNAL: https://bookshop.org/a/12099/9781558968257 We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Hundreds of religious leaders and faith-based advocates recently gathered at George Washington University in Washington DC to wrestle with the task of "Reimagining Interfaith" to meet these needs. One of the pillars of progressive faith parenting is inclusivity, connecting with people of all religions and faiths instead of drawing dogmatic boundaries. Because of this, I think it is a critical conversation to have with interfaith families and children who are raised to be religiously literate in more than one faith. I asked around for who to talk to about this subject and overwhelmingly everyone said, Susan Katz Miller, is the go-to person. She was raised interfaith and identifies as Jewish, married a Protestant husband and raised her two children with both faith identities. In this conversation, I ask her to dismantle some of the misconceptions surrounding interfaith families, what it takes to “make it work,” what are the logistics of family life to contain rituals of more than one faith, and how the children of interfaith families respond to their upbringing. I learned so much from her, and I’m sure you will too. September 24, 2014 | What are the most pressing issues at the intersection of faith and gender, and how can women of different faiths and views derive strength and meaning from their respective religions? A conference cosponsored by the the new web magazine altFem (from the founders of altMuslimah.com and altCatholicah.com), the Berkley Center’s project on Women, Religion, and the Family, and the World Faiths Development Dialogue explored these important questions. More than a third of all new marriages now occur between people with different religious affiliations, or between religious and non-religious people. Whether the couple is Protestant and Jewish, or Catholic and atheist, or Buddhist and Hindu, they share a certain perspective as interfaith families. So how do interfaith families bridge those religious gaps, find support, and create plans for the religious education of their children? Susan Katz Miller is here with us today to describe a number of pathways that interfaith families can take. She also encourages interfaith families to see their relationships as a source of inspiration, creative energy, and peacemaking in the world, rather than simply as a problem or challenge to be solved.  Journalist Susan Katz Miller is a former Newsweek reporter, and the author of Being Both: Embracing Two Religions in One Interfaith Family. She is the founder of the national Network of Interfaith Family Groups on facebook, and a consultant who works with clergy, seminarians, religious educators, and religious communities to better appreciate the role of interfaith families today. Tracy CulbreathKing has a passion for conflict resolution that began after pursuing her Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Central Florida in Interpersonal Organizational Communication. After observing the consequences of poor communication on a personal and professional level, she realized she needed additional skills to address the conflicts that often resulted from communication breakdowns. In 2014 Tracy graduated from the University of Baltimore with a Master’s of Science in Negotiation and Conflict Management.

Susan Katz Miller UU "fangirl" and ally presented at GA Portland to clergy about interfaith families and their roles and responsabilites to them. How is your congregation interacting with interfaith families? What are clergy doing to be more inclusive of interfaith families in the congregations? Children in interfaith families can be taught both religions. This allows youth to explore and experience a wealth of tradition and culture inside their families. Bio: Author and journalist Susan Katz Miller is both an interfaith child and an interfaith parent. Her father is Jewish, her mother is Protestant: she grew up in Reform Judaism. After marrying a Protestant, Miller and her husband decided to raise their children in both religions, in a community of interfaith families. Miller served as Board Co-Chair of the Interfaith Families Project of Greater Washington DC. Miller graduated from Brown University, and began her journalism career at Newsweek in New York. After working in the Los Angeles and Washington bureaus, she moved to Dakar, Senegal for three years. While there, she wrote travel pieces for the New York Times, was tear-gassed in the streets while covering an election, interviewed the President of Senegal for Newsweek International, and wrote Christian Science Monitor pieces from Benin, Togo, the Gambia, and Sierra Leone. On returning to the States, she became a US Correspondent for the British weekly magazine New Scientist. She then spent three years freelancing from northeastern Brazil. After her two children were born, she and her husband settled in the Washington, DC, area, and she founded the first blog devoted to interfaith family communities and interfaith identity, onbeingboth.com, and began blogging at Huffington Post Religion. Miller’s writing has also appeared in Time, Slate, Utne Reader, Discover, Science, National Wildlife, Health, Moment, Jewcy.com, interfaithfamily.com, and many other publications. Miller studied photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and her photographs have been published in the New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, and International Wildlife. Her work on interfaith families has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, NPR’s Here & Now, NPR’s Diane Rehm Show, on the PBS program Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and on HuffPost Live, and in dozens of other media outlets. Miller also writes for the Jewish Daily Forward‘s interfaith relationship advice column, The Seesaw. Susan Katz Miller is available for speaking, book group appearances, and facilitating workshops for interfaith couples, teens or grandparents.
