“Love of God, love of neighbors. Seek the kingdom, the good of the world. And in that good of the whole, your own good. And be attuned to what is around you in joy and also in sorrow.” (Miroslav Volf)We're in a crisis of meaning. It's like our existential compasses are off kilter. Uprooted from faith, social, and civic communities—the very institutions that once supplied narratives, a sense of identity, and belonging. But meaning and purpose are central to our spiritual health and therefore thriving. And theology comes into play because psychologists are more concerned with how meaning is made descriptively—looking at the cognitive and affective processes of our brains and behavior. Whereas theologians are concerned with prescriptive meaning, commenting normatively about how we should live. This episode features renowned theologian Miroslav Volf (Henry B. Wright Professor of Systematic Theology at Yale Divinity School / Founder and Director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture) and author of the bestselling book, Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters Most.We need stories of love and hope to define our lives. And much of Miroslav's life's work has been devoted to understanding what constitutes a life worth living. In our conversation, he shares about a God who is with us, who is loving, and who created us for love, calling us to an active role in the flourishing of this world. In this conversation, we discuss:How to discern what really matters and how to be intentional about a life worth livingThe need to challenge the hyper individualistic assumptions of our day, focusing on thriving life as a life of connections and convictionsSpiritual health as dependent on our relationships with one another, with God, and creationSpiritual practices that quiet, create space, and slow us down—allowing us to attune a broad and secure space for human becoming and unfoldingMiroslav speaks openly and vulnerably about his own experiences of faith, suffering, hope, and flourishingShow NotesLearn more about the Yale Center for Faith and CultureCheck out Miroslav's best-selling book, Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters Most (co-authored with Matt Croasmun and Ryan McAnnally-Linz)Reorienting theology around the concept of human flourishingHonor everyone, love God, love neighbor, seek the kingdom, stay attuned in joy and in sorrowCrisis of meaning and the need for deeper reflection on what matters most“We need stories of love and hope to define our lives.”Interdisciplinary research in psychology and theologyMiroslav reflects on his early life in 1970s Croatia (then Yugoslavia)Anthony Kronman's Education's End: Why Our Colleges and Universities Have Given Up on the Meaning of LifeMiroslav's early faith: “Jesus is alive.”“His experience was that people who believe are idiots, that they can't know anything, that they are these parasites that want to undermine whatever the society's trying to do. And so that was my first initiation, so to speak, in the public living of my faith. … but, it was also beautiful.”A way of life that is worth suffering for—holding a treasure.“Another occasion where we were actually beaten and chased out of a village that was completely communist-dominated. And we kind of disrupted it by … We spoke about Jesus … and they chased us out of the city to beat us up … and then we had this kind of sense of joy.”Practices vs ReflectionMoral practices and felt experience“There's always a kind of excess beyond what we can actually say, what we can describe, what we can explain. We stutter often when we try to—especially describe experiences like joy or like suffering. They're beyond the words. That's the beauty of them—giving oneself to them.”Miroslav Volf on thrivingThriving is framed around three elements of human experience: agency, circumstances, and emotions—knit together through the lens of the kingdom of God and Christian imaginationAgency: Love God and Love neighbor.Circumstances: “Thy kingdom come” vs “give us this day our daily bread”Emotions: Attune to the world. “Rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn.”“Love of God, love of neighbors. They have to fit together.”“We make truth claims.”“I think we go wrong when we don't honor people's own search for truth. The whole book is about having truth-seeking conversations about something that has a claim upon your life. And argue with others, but argue in such a way that honors everyone. And so for me, this is a kind of central Christian conviction that comes straight from the Bible, from 1 Peter. Short commandment: Honor everyone. That's what I need to do. Whatever they do, whatever they think, especially honor those who've spent so much time trying to think through some of these issues as many of the figures have that have, that are not necessarily Christian.”“Honor everyone.”Nurturing the ascetic practices of self-reflection and disciplineSpiritual exercise by Pam King: Creating SpaceTeresa of Avila and the Interior CastleRelationality, reciprocity, and mutual flourishingRobin Wall Kimmerer in *Braiding Sweetgrass: “*All flourishing is mutual.”“Human thriving isn't thriving when it's the expense of other people's thriving.”“And it's a kind of strange paradox. At our disposal, but it's all reference to me and to my experiences. … We have a really narrow scope of concerns.”Mary's Magnificat: “God coming and taking the mighty down from their thrones and transforming the entire world.”“What I want is the expansion of the horizon of concerns. Our horizon of concern is the horizon of God's mission in the world. God's mission is our mission.”About Miroslav VolfMiroslav Volf is the Henry B. What might it look like to find a more beautiful way to navigate the racial harm and disconnection of our time? What might it look like to find the healing pathways within our own family lineages and in the places we come from? What roles do repair and forgiveness play in cultivating a new world? In today's conversation, we are joined by author, activist and storyteller Lisa Sharon Harper. Through the lens of her most recent book, "Fortune: How Race Broke My Family and the World and How to Repair It All," Lisa walks through how learning our family histories, and setting those histories within the context of the broader history of one's nation, opens up healing pathways to repair the harms of racial hierarchy in our world. ABOUT LISA Lisa Sharon Harper (LSMA, Columbia University; MFA, University of Southern California) is the founder of Freedom Road, a consulting group dedicated to shrinking the narrative gap. A sought-after speaker, trainer, and consultant with more than 100,000 social media followers, Harper has written several books, including the critically acclaimed The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can Be Made Right. Her work has been featured in the New Yorker, Relevant, Essence, HuffPost, The National Civic Review, and CNN, and she has appeared on PBS's Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly, TV One, Fox News, NPR, and Al Jazeera America. The spiritual seeker's guide to living with authenticity and integrity in troubled times by a lauded journalist and monk mentored by Thomas Merton.   This book is a dialogue between two spiritual seekers—one a Trappist monk and the other a married professional woman. It is two people “strugeling to articulate life's universal questions from diverse contexts and perspectives.” Brother Paul writes as one steeped in silence and the daily rhythms of the ancient prayer practices of monasticism. Judith Valente writes as a professional woman attempting to bring a sense of prayer and contemplation to a scattered life in the secular world. Valente uses the story of Brother Paul's interview for a PBS documentary as a jumping-off point: When asked the purpose of the Trappist life in the modern world, he said that it is “to show you don't need a purpose.” The purpose of life, he said, is life. “You're to live your life.” How to Be offers a window into two people living their lives on purpose (or not) and struggling to come to terms with the big issues everyone faces: faith, mortality, mystery, prayer, work. It is a book that provides insight and inspiration for those walking the spiritual path—particularly for those interested in the contemplative path. Judith Valente is a former staff writer for the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in journalism. She is a former correspondent for PBS's Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly and senior correspondent for investigative reporting and long features at the NPR affiliate in central Illinois. She was also a special correspondent covering faith and values and arts and culture for Chicago Public Radio. Valente contributes articles to US Catholic magazine and National Catholic Reporter.

Season 5, Episode 7 of Messy Jesus Business podcast, hosted by Sister Julia Walsh. "We have more than one calling, depending on the will of God." - Judith Valente LISTEN HERE: IN THIS EPISODE: In this episode of Messy Jesus Business, Sister Julia Walsh talks with authors Judith Valente and Brother Paul Quenon about their motivations behind the book they most recently co-authored. They discuss callings, how it's possible to have several and how each of them came to know their respective callings. They consider what it means "to be," and how vastly that differs from our productivity-focused culture, which Judith says she knew all too well when working as a journalist, where the idea of simply being was a foreign concept. "More, more, better, better. You gotta work all the time you've got to be plugged in all the time," she explains of the mindset. That raises the question: what then, is success? Brother Paul weighs in, "I think success is to be authentic; to live according to your true self, which is...to be a child of God." Top L-R: Judith Valente, Sister Julia Walsh. Bottom: Brother Paul Quenon. Judith, Brother Paul and Sister Julia also explore the inherent messiness of living in community, how the pandemic has served as a spiritual teacher, and how Thomas Merton influenced both of them and the way they live their spirituality. ABOUT THE GUESTS: Brother Paul Quenon and Judith Valente are co-authors of the books: How to Be: a Monk and a Journalist Reflect on Living & Dying, Purpose & Prayer, Forgiveness & Friendship; and The Art of Pausing: Meditations for the Overworked and Overwhelmed. Brother Paul entered the Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky in 1958 at the age of 17, where Thomas Merton was his novice master and spiritual director. He sleeps under the stars each night and is an avid hiker and hill climber. Br. Paul is the author of the award-winning book In Praise of the Useless Life: A Monk's Memoir....as well as nine collections of poetry. He is also a sought-after and inspiring speaker. Judith Valente is a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in journalism and is the recipient of many awards for her coverage of faith and culture for national PBS-TV's Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly. A former staff writer for both The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, she has been a contributing correspondent for Chicago Public Radio, and her articles appear in U.S. Catholic and National Catholic Reporter. Judith is the author of four previous spirituality titles, she is a lay associate of the Benedictine monastery Mount St. Scholastica, and she speaks and leads retreats on living a more contemplative life and discovering inner wisdom. You can read more about her at her website: judithvalente.com/. Copies of Judith Valente's and Brother Paul Quenon's books may be purchased at Gesthamani book store . Leading Christian activist, author and founder of the consulting group Freedom Road, Lisa Sharon Harper has spent three decades researching ten generations of her family history through DNA research, oral histories, interviews and genealogy. In her new book, Fortune: How Race Broke My Family and the World—and How to Repair It All (Brazos Press, February 8, 2022), Harper draws on her lifelong journey to know her family's history to recover the beauty of her heritage, expose the brokenness that race has wrought in America, and cast a vision for collective repair. Fortune, the name of Harper's first non-indigenous ancestor born on American soil, bore the brunt of the nation's first race, gender and citizenship laws. As Harper traces her family's story through succeeding generations, she shows how American ideas, customs, and laws robbed her ancestors—and the ancestors of so many others—of their humanity and flourishing. As Harper lights a path through national and religious history, she clarifies exactly how and when the world broke and shows the way to redemption for us all. The book culminates with a vision of truth telling, reparation, and forgiveness that leads to beloved community.
