Take a break from your shiny new Nintendo Switch 2 to help answer a few questions here. Can Lionsgate's new movie, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, overcome its clunky spin-off title to dethrone Lilo and Stitch? Will North America embrace the most popular fast-food chain from the Philippines? Can Noah Hawley translate the Alien franchise to cable television success? Meanwhile, a grisly tragedy overshadows the triumphant return of King of the Hill, James Bond (finally) gets a new videogame from the developers behind the splendid Hitman series, and Marvel Knights: The World to Come introduces a new Black Panther that...well, let's just say it's a controversial pivot.Music: "Sweeter Vermouth" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Students come into university with strong visions of activism and improvement. They know the planet needs their help. But how? What can STS (in the form of degrees like “Sociology and Politics of Science BSc” and “History and Philosophy of Science BSc”) add that isn't already available and easy to reach? In this episode, we talk with two STS first-year students about their experiences in the degree thus far. How has it helped to sharpen their ideas of where to where to act and why. We asked them to discuss one of the first-year projects that made them approach activism better. Both chose work from our “Big Problems in Science and Technology Studies” module, which is designed for just this purpose. Our focus this year was on Oceans.Fatima philosophises an experimental geoengineering project by Russ George, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who, in 2012, sold carbon credits for dumping 100 tonnes of iron sulfate into international waters to trigger an algal bloom. She questions whether this ‘experiment' was scientific or just pseudoscience, as well as the ethics of George's near-unilateral venture in the no-man's-land of the open ocean.JJ considers the idea of “building with blue biomass,” an idea promoted by an international network of architects, engineers, and academics (some at UCL!) who are imagining new ways to use marine micro-organisms for sustainable Net-Zero construction. The building sector produces approximately 40 percent of carbon emissions today. But how to connect the vision to action? JJ considers the challenges keeping this kind of initiative from connecting with the public, the tyranny of the techno-market, and the role of sociotechnical imaginaries in driving change. It's a battle royale at the box office this Memorial Day weekend, Ethan Hunt versus Stitch. Meanwhile the latest Hunger Games prequel drums up a lot of interest just off its spot-on casting announcements. We have a TV review round-up for The Last of Us, Poker Face, and Duster, followed by Kyle's comic book Picks of the Week (POW! if you will). Also, Randy Pitchford weighs in on the $80 price tag of Borderlands 4, not in a cool way. Fortnite gives the world a Darth Vader chatbot no one asked for or needs. And an oft-mocked fast food chain tests out an admittedly tasty sounding sandwich.Music: "Sweeter Vermouth" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Final Destination: Bloodlines opens this week, hoping to pull off a box office heist before Ethan Hunt and Stitch arrive. Superman gets a new, exciting trailer that really nails down the character himself. Andor ends (sniff, sniff) and The Last of Us was just kinda okay this week. Max, formerly HBO Max, formerly HBO Now is now...HBO Max...again. A Game of Thrones spinoff gets delayed, while the already long-delayed Ironheart finally makes its way to Disney Plus. Ubisoft pushes back most of their 2026 releases, and Doom: The Dark Ages is a very different beast than its predecessors. Also, get ready for Local Comic Shop Day in September, and get excited for Ben Grimm vs. the entire Marvel universe.Music: "Sweeter Vermouth" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Disney and Marvel Studios play the name game and spoil their own movie two days after it releases, Grand Theft Auto 6 gets delayed (but releases a nifty trailer), Andor bends the Star Wars canon slightly, Yellowstone gets a much more traditional geezer-aimed spinoff, and the Blues Brothers return in comic book form! Meanwhile, a new Stephen King adaptation, leaked pics of an Xbox-branded handheld, and a local coffee chain is set to expand into a national player.Music: "Sweeter Vermouth" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Subway is closing a record number of stores across America, probably related to their latest fetish for random snacks shaped like a 2x4. Natasha Lyonne is making an "ethical AI" movie, whatever that means. Pedro Pascal throws some much deserved insults at fellow WBD asset JK Rowling while JJ Abrams and Josh Holloway reunite for a '70s crime series. EA fires hundreds of workers and cancels some games, meanwhile Borderlands 4 gets a new release date. In this episode, Dr Carina Fearnley, Associate Professor of Science Communication, talks about warning research and disaster preparedness. Carina is an expert in disaster warning and public engagement. Her research focuses on ways to improve the effectiveness of warning systems. She's contributed a lot to communication around risk and warning in the pandemic. Her long-term research focuses on volcano and tsunami warning systems around the world. Her projects involve cases in Iceland, South America, the Middle East, and across Europe. This is real world, life-saving public engagement. https://ucl.ac.uk/sts/fearnley Carina has been the leader in organising UCL's Warning Research Centre, which is now running strong. The Centre brings academic and industry people together to focus on specific cases and on fundamentals. This is a relatively new part of STS and it's making quite an impression. https://www.ucl.ac.uk/sts/warning-research-centre I spoke with Carina earlier this year, just after she gave testimony to the UK House of Lords on how the country might prepare for extreme risks in the future. As of November 2021, more than 46.4 million people in the UK have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as part of the biggest mass-immunization programme the country has ever run. Most of us rushed to book our appointments as soon as we received a message, keen to protect ourselves from the virus. However, not everyone has been quite so confident in the vaccine. In this episode, Jasmine Chakravarty speaks to four UCL academics to learn more about vaccine hesitancy and the evolution of public messaging. In art, media, and life, the Sophomore attempt is seen as the moment when the world can see what the thing is really like. They have come out, made an attempt or impression on the world, shy, new....and then they come back with their real statement for the world. This is the second issue of what will become a four issue mini series. The first had promise, with some worry. This second issue is where we are really looking for the hook, the theme that will keep all the kids coming back for it's milkshakes. Boy howdy......this book is selling something, and it just might be a hot mess or whatever. Their is tone problems, and issues with story beat, replaying old tunes, and other audio analogies that I will forego at the moment. This hodgepodge of stuff has left us pretty cold on this issue, and very hesitant of the rest of the series. It is difficult to compare what is happening here, in this 2000 book, with what will happen in five years with Marc Sumerak and GuriHiru. We know what this property is capable of. We know it can be better. There could be an argument against the property turning into a teen or tween book with a focus on romance. That would be fine, if it was done well, or done with consistency. Spoiler for the next book and the rest of the series, the romance angles really get shelved. it is not a good showing of the kids actually trying to live normal lives. While the first issue felt like an opportunity, this one just fell flat. There was a lot happening that could have set up some story lines, but a few were rehashing of old plots while the rest were just uncomfortable. And really, it just made us want to lie down for a bit. Will robots steal my job? Will gene editing cure my cancer? HYPE is a fundamental part of science communication, the development of new technologies, and the crucially important interface between business, investment, and new technology. How does HYPE work? Can it be used for good? In this interview, Gemma Milne discusses her book, SMOKE AND MIRRORS, and her interest in HYPE as an ever-present phenomenon in our society. Gemma also discusses how she became interested in studying sociology of technology and innovation research, beginning with her first degree in mathematics, and her later journey through the finance and tech start-up industries, then science journalism. Gemma's book: Milne, Gemma. 2020. Smoke and Mirrors. How Hype Obscures the Future and How to See Past It (London: Robinson). ISBN: 978-1-4721-4366-2. Surprise, surprise! After the final episode with Matt Shupe, we have another one for you. In this German edition of The IcePod, we talk to Captain Thomas Wunderlich who took over the command of the German research icebreaker RV Polarstern for leg 4 and 5 of the MOSAiC expedition in June 2020. Thomas Wunderlich is one of currently three captains on board Polarstern; together with his colleague Captain Stefan Schwarze he made sure that scientists could carry out their work during the one-year drifting MOSAiC ice camp in the central Arctic. How to become the captain of the 39 year-old Lady Polarstern, and what is the role of a captain when the ship is not actively moving but just drifting through sea-ice floes? Not only we learn about the bunch of items Thomas Wunderlich always takes with him aboard when leaving for the north or south (we only mention 'night socks' here), but also we hear about how to pursue a career at sea, about the different marine officer grades and on the general aspects of seafaring in Germany and around the world. 'There are the dead, there are the living, and there are sailors', Thomas Wunderlich quotes an unknown source; his life is divided into six months at sea and six months at home each year, both being intensive times of living, and yes, Thomas Wunderlich also likes to be on land, using his spare time for work in the garden or to explore the beautiful Spreewald area south of Berlin, which is home for Captain Wunderlich. Wunderlich tells us about the moment, many years ago, when for the first time he had heard that something called the MOSAiC expedition was discussed. And he revisits with us the precious moment when he met his Captain colleague Stefan Schwarze somewhere at the sea-ice edge in June last year. Yes, he can't deny, they gave each other a hug when he took over the command after leg 3. After all, in times when it is uncertain whether a MOSAiC expedition can continue even under pandemic circumstances, it was also his endorsement to expedition lead Markus Rex to keep on going, thanks to the brilliant logistic efforts that made seemingly impossible things possible. There is one common goal at a research vessel, which is making the scientists happy by enabling them to do their research; for which both parties need to be treated overly respectfully on board, and this has worked out very well for Thomas Wunderlich's leg 4 and 5 of MOSAiC. "While we, the captain and crew, can take water samples, we cannot analyze them. But at the same time, if there wasn't us, the ship would still sit in Bremerhaven." In October 2020, after one year in the ice, Thomas Wunderlich maneuvered RV Polarstern back home to Bremerhaven. The moment has been hilarious and very emotional when the vessel entered port on a sunny early October morning, accompanied by the many welcome-honking escort boats and happy-waving people at the quay. With apologies to Garrett at Chipotle, it's yet another mammoth episode of Black n Blou. We welcome our very special guest star, Milligan alum Megan Fontenot. We learn about metaphors at the poetic feet (get it?) of Neil the Younger, and we ask vital questions, like: "Hey, is that David Bowie in a giant spider costume?" Then we delve into the increasingly urgent need for the liberal arts, before cleansing the palate with a heavy dose of Neil Young, that most American of prophets (a national essence conveyed most earnestly in his bear/salmon imagery). Episode #1. STS student, Nuzhah Miah, interviews Dr Jack Stilgoe about Evgeny Morozov's 2014 book, To Save Everything Click Here, asking him why it's recommended reading for new students coming into UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS). The book they are discussing is Evgeny Morozov (2014) To Save Everything Click Here: Technology, Solutionism, and the urge to fix problems that don't exist (Penguin). The publisher's description reads: “Our gadgets are getting smarter. Technology can log what we buy, customize what we consume and enable us to save and share every aspect of our existence. In the future, we're told, it will even make public life - from how we're governed to how we record crime - better. But can the digital age fix everything? Should it? By quantifying our behaviour, Evgeny Morozov argues, we are profoundly reshaping society - and risk losing the opacity and imperfection that make us human.” Featuring Interviewee: Dr Jack Stilgoe, Associate Professor of Social Studies of Science at UCL. Interviewer: Nuzhah Miah, student in UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS). She also is host of "The Spilled Milk" podcast. This interview took place in August 2020.
