Hey friends! Welcome back to another birthday countdown episode! We are so excited about turning 10 years old in just a few weeks! Every Friday we've been playing episodes from our very first season. If you haven't caught up, we highly suggest you go back and listen! It's crazy how topics we talked about over ten years ago can still have so much relevance and meaning today! On today's show we throw it back to the very first conversation with Susie Davis. Susie is an author, blogger, speaker and church founder. Susie is married to Will Davis Jr., the founding and senior pastor of Austin Christian Fellowship, and together they have three children. Aside from family and ministry, Susie is helplessly addicted to horseback riding and McDonald's coffee. In addition, one of her all time favorites is cooking and enjoying family dinners. Jamie and Susie discuss how they both ended up in radio accidentally, and also how hard it is to follow your passions individually when you also feel as though you are supposed to be giving so much to your family. Susie shares about what started her down the road of being a fearful person and how that ruled her world for so many years. We know by the end of this episode you'll be encouraged to live unafraid and kick fear to the curb! Thanks for listening and sharing this episode with a friend! SHOW LINKS:-Unafraid: Trusting God in An Unsafe World-Loving Your Man Without Losing Your Mind-Parenting Your Teen and Loving It-Uncovered: Revealing the Secrets of a Sexy Marriage-The Time of Your Life: Finding God's Rest In Your Busy Schedule-Connect with Susie Davis-Connect with Jamie Ivey

Hello, hello, hello! I am over the moon to welcome you to the Simple Prayers Podcast with me, Susie Davis! Prayer is conversation with God. And that conversation doesn't need to be formal or complicated or “perfect” by any means. Prayer should be natural. Easy. Joyful. Even fun! Because it's fun to talk to someone you love. Prayer is you and God talking about the things that matter most to you. In the Simple Prayers Podcast, I want to encourage you to talk to God – daily, hourly, always. Because simple prayers can change your life.  In the first ever episode, I'm sharing a simple prayer that I've been praying over my life for decades. The really amazing thing is that it's a prayer to ask God to follow what Jesus calls the greatest commandment. Since Jesus said it's a big deal, I wanted to get my life in line with it. So I turned it into my heartfelt prayer. Maybe you'd like to pray this one too? Dear God. Help me to love you. Help me to love others. Help me to love myself. Amen.  I'm praying this over my life. And yours too. Welcome to the Simple Prayers Podcast. I'm glad you're here. :) SHOW NOTES Become a Newsletter Friend. Join me at Austin Christian Fellowship on Sundays online or in-person. Susie is the founder of Family Flow, a ‘coming soon' app giving parents insights and tools to support their parenting journey. A family psychologist, she is passionate about family life, and about putting ourselves first in order to give our best to others. Currently in the trenches of busy family life, with four children aged two to 17 years, Susie understands family struggles. She specialises in stepfamily wellbeing, and is a great advocate for differently wired children, understanding the increased challenges faced by parents (and educators) trying to nurture and develop these wonderful children. In this conversation we traverse a childhood spent in the Wirral, where Susie and her family were heavily involved in the Wirral Schools Concert Band. We also talk about childhood bereavement, and how Susie and her family coped with the loss of her sister Judith, when all three siblings were still quite young. Susie Davis is one of the co-founders of The Family Space, which is a parenting coaching company on a mission to help families connect and thrive. And boy! Did I need her at some points in lockdown.... Susie is a psychologist, with counselling and systemic family therapy expertise. Bereaved as a child, divorced, remarried, a stepmother and a mother to her own 4 children - one of which she had in lockdown – she knows the reality and challenge of modern parenting. I did a 6 week coaching course with the Family Space which included much appreciated one to ones with Susie. Especially at those, err 'challenging' or 'spirited' moments that we had.... There were quite a few..... The Family Space has really challenged me to think differently about parenting. My guest for The Happy Hour # 273 is Susie Davis. Susie is an author, speaker, podcaster, and in all things she is an encourager and mentor. Susie has a passion for writing and her hope is to encourage you to love God more and live your one beautiful life. Susie is often called a spiritual mama because of her God-given desire to reach out to the 'dear daughters' around her. Susie and her husband and high school sweetheart Will have been married and in ministry for over thirty years. Friends, I am so thankful to have Susie back on The Happy Hour! Susie has a gift for making you feel seen, celebrated, and encouraged and I know you will hear that throughout our conversation today. Susie and I talk about how our roles change over time, the losses we may feel in these transitions, and the importance of healing so that we can embrace our next role. I hope you will be inspired to find a mentor and be a mentor as you hear Susie demystify what mentoring looks like. It's not about a special curriculum or meeting spot, but instead it's about being present and "asking questions and listening for God."  I could sit and talk with Susie all day and I know you'll feel like you just had a virtual hug from this spiritual mama after listening to the show! Susie Davis is a mentor of mentors. She’s the author of several books and host of the Dear Daughters podcast. I’m so excited to share our conversation with you as she answers your questions about mentorship, marriage and meeting with God.  “I think you deserve a mentor. I think it's God's will for your life to have an older woman that you can talk to who has wisdom for you and your specific situation.” In her book and podcast, Dear Daughters, Susie seeks to bring together younger women and spiritual moms. Each of us has valuable insight for one other, but getting started with mentoring can be a hurdle. Whether you have a mentor, are a mentor or want to start, Susie shares encouragement and insight into establishing and maintaining a healthy mentor relationship. (including what not to say!) We also talk about marriage and how to love your man without losing your mind about the little things that can drive us crazy.  “I think marriage is the greatest opportunity for sanctification, which is just becoming more like God. It is the one relationship that is never supposed to end. You're ‘trapped’ in it and you have to work it out with them.” Talking with Susie is such a gift. She shares a wealth of wisdom from the perspective of someone who has experienced a lot of growth in her own life and marriage over the years. I recall going through a period of transition a few years back. Even though I understood what I faced, I didn't feel comfortable. The world didn't seem right, and I didn't know what to do.  I'm thankful for the older women in my life who helped me navigate those times. They knew how to speak to my heart when nothing else worked.  The Bible talks about older women teaching the younger ones how to love their husband and children, so praying for a mentor can be a good thing. In this episode, the incredibly wise and gracious Susie Davis talks about her passion to mentor other women. She also shares the lessons she has learned in life, in ministry, and what she wishes she would have known as a younger woman.    In this episode we discuss: 1. Why our weaknesses shouldn't stop us from leading and helping others 2. Why women need and can thrive with mentoring 3. How we can point the next generation to vibrant faith and leadership   Favorite quotes: 1. Show me the man or woman who at the end of their life says “I felt totally confident in my skin every moment, every day of my life because I love God.” I don't think it works like that. Even when you look at the stories you read in Scripture, they struggled. The people in the Bible struggled greatly. So why is it unusual that we struggle too? 2. It's a life of faith and God is asking us to do more than we normally would do if left to our own devices. 3. Most of the learning, and this kind of goes back to mentoring, should be face-to-face, across the table because that's the only way to really know someone.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I love your life tips. What is a simple change I can make in my conversations that will help me seem more confident? (57:16) 2. Why does God not answer some prayers? (58:54) 3. Do I need to create a business plan for my new business? (1:01:46)   Links to great things we discussed: 1. Susie Davis 2. Kacey Musgraves 3. Friday Night Lights 4. Every day, she wakes up and writes out things in her moleskin journals. And every day, she ends up somewhere on social media with words hoping to encourage us to love God even more. The other thing that she can’t seem to escape is a God-given desire to reach out to the young women around her. She calls them her 'dear daughters' which is also the name of her podcast. Before our interview I didn’t personally know Susie, but she has mentored me from afar via her podcast. I’ve had some incredible chats with other mentors and friends on the show, but this one tops the chart as my favorite conversation to date! Susie’s quote, “The difference between reality and expectation is misery,” is something I will be thinking about for awhile. Susie Davis is the kind of woman we could talk to for hours. Because she is in a word: wise. She talks to us in this episode about how mentoring relationships have naturally happened over the years through her relationships with younger women. Susie is a mom to three and a mother-in-law to almost three. We talk about the tragedy Susie's own young life that began a journey of intense fear. This fear followed her into adulthood and an encounter with God. Out of that came her book Unafraid: Trusting God in an Unsafe World. Listen in to hear about her favorite pens that come in seasonal colors (Oooh yes!) and why going outside helps her clear her mind. You really won't be sorry you joined us for this episode and you will have a new podcast to add to your list in Letters to My Daughters because you will want more of Susie!

Happy Hour #48 is with my friend Susie Davis. Susie Davis is an author, blogger, speaker and church founder. Susie has been married to Will Davis Jr., the founding and senior pastor of Austin Christian Fellowship, for twenty-nine years. They have three children: Will III (28) – a Baylor graduate now in ministry with his wife, Amy. Emily (25) – also a Baylor grad now in ministry with her husband, Kenton Boone. Sara (21) – a junior at the University of Texas. Aside from family and ministry, Susie is helplessly addicted to horseback riding and McDonald’s coffee. In addition, one of her all time favorites is cooking and enjoying family dinners. She has written five books over the years.  On this show we discuss how we both ended up in radio accidentally and how much we both loved it, and also how hard it is to follow our passions individually when we also feel as though we are supposed to be giving so much to our family. Susie shares about what started her down the road of being a fearful person and how that ruled her world for so many years. We then discussed parenting older kids, and she literally gave me an individual counseling session about my boys and their girlfriends. It was rather funny, especially since I kept her on the line for about 10 minutes after our interview for more counseling!!  :) Links from the show: Susie's books: Unafraid: Trusting God in an Unsafe World Loving Your Man without Losing Your Mind Parenting Your Teen and Loving It: Being the Mom Your Kid Needs Uncovered: Revealing the Secrets of a Sexy Marriage The Time of Your Life: Finding God’s Rest in Your Busy Schedule Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh The blog "To the Job Degree" by my friend Angela Suh about taking the worst case scenerio all the way to the end and see how God is still in control Tweet: Confession is liberty.
