It's not just skill, athleticism, or talent—it's how they think. In this video, I'll break down the two key mental traits that separate elite players from everyone else. First, the ability to detach from emotions and stay present—great players don't dwell on mistakes or worry about the future; they stay locked in on the moment. Second, they have irrational confidence—they believe in themselves even when no one else does, and they don't hesitate to take their opportunities. If you want to take your game to the next level, you NEED to develop these two traits. I share my beliefs and reasoning behind this and why I feel it behooves owners to start thinking differently about their role in their practice. Learn how to harness your drive, sharpen focus, and break self-sabotage. Some people are wired to push forward, question the norm, and never feel satisfied. Labeled as restless or impulsive, their traits may actually be strengths. This episode breaks down the “Driven” personality—why some thrive in uncertainty, crave challenge, and struggle with traditional structures, along with ways to avoid common pitfalls. My guest today is Dr. Doug Brackmann, a psychologist with dual PhDs and author of Driven. He has spent his career helping elite performers overcome self-doubt and channel their energy into success. As the creator of the Driven Assessment and Shooting Meditation, Dr. Doug provides tools to help high achievers take control of their minds. In this conversation, he explains what it means to be Driven and how to stop working against yourself. In this episode, you will: The “Driven” personality is a genetic trait found in high achievers, making them wired for challenge and innovation. Traditional systems often fail Driven individuals, leading to frustration and self-doubt. Driven people experience attention overload, processing more information but struggling with distraction. Their brains track multiple variables at once, making them great problem solvers in chaos. The feeling of “not enough” drives success but can also lead to burnout or self-sabotage. Meditation, when adapted for the Driven, improves focus and self-regulation. Mastering systems and processes leads to success, not chasing outcomes like money. All this and more, on this week's episode of Beyond 7 Figures. Stay tuned next week when we talk about . So, don't forget to subscribe to the show to get that episode as soon it gets released. Ever notice how everyone picks the same predictable words for their New Year - peace, joy, freedom? What if your 2025 word of the year could be something totally unexpected that lights up everyone's face when you share it? 2025: The Year of Captivation Yep, that's MY word this year. 2025 is not just another year—it's the year of captivation for me. In the past, my time has been driven by business goals, from client acquisition to serving a growing audience predominantly of mothers. This year, however, my focus is on discovering and pursuing what truly captivates me—my word of the year. --- **Captivation: Inspired by Family and Stories** Reflecting on memorable moments of captivation, I am reminded of summers spent with my grandmothers in Miami and Puerto Rico. My Cuban grandmother and her family were expert storytellers, captivating me with tales from their lives and adventures. These moments instilled in me a love for storytelling and a fascination with human expression. --- **Choosing a Word of the Year: A Journey of Self-Discovery** I invite you to join me on this journey of selecting a word of the year—a concept popularized by Danielle Laporte in her work on desire mapping. Find a word that resonates deeply, one that isn't commonly chosen but is authentic to the sensation you aim to experience. Whether it's a bold choice like "captivating" or something uniquely personal, let it guide your experiences and interactions. --- **Practice Captivation in Everyday Life** Achieving a sense of captivation doesn't necessarily require grand gestures; it can be found in simple, everyday experiences. Whether it's listening intently to your child's story or discovering a new passion, these moments hold the potential to enrich our lives profoundly. --- **Conclusion: A Year of Unforeseen Opportunities** As we traverse 2025, I aim to provide you with content that not only captivates but also adds value to your life. This year will be marked by transformative changes in how I approach my business and personal life, integrating my newly acquired skills as a meditation practitioner. Let's explore how we can make this year uniquely ours. I encourage you, my listeners, to think expansively, embrace words that are different, and stand unafraid in your journey. Happy New Year! It is Melissa, your host of the Mom Founder Imagination Hub podcast. Wow, like what was that? Seriously, it's so funny. I just returned from a trip to the colonies, as I like to refer the states that I have a lot of family in. So we went to New York, we went to New Jersey and we went to Connecticut. Yeah. And I will say that the experience was a bit of a whirlwind, but it ended with just like feeling really, really sick. And so I'm on the mend, definitely feeling very, very. alive and excited and pumped about 2025. This morning, I already went to the gym. I did my 10, 000 steps, went to the groceries, did some laundry part two. I mean, it's been a productive set of hours on this feast of the epiphany Three Wise Men Day. I even put incense with the scent of myrrh for the occasion of the Three Wise Men. You remember? What did they give baby Jesus? Frankincense, myrrh, and gold. So I would say, you know, it's been a really interesting start to the new year. And in this unedited episode, you thoroughly hear that I still have the remnants of a, a bad set of bacteria, virus, But notwithstanding, I feel good. I feel good about 2025. And the reason why I do is because it's going to be different than years past. Years past have been really dictated by business initiatives, figuring out what needs to happen in order to bring in new clients, in order to better serve, You know, a brand new target audience being you a mom and also, you know, just a lot of novelty when it comes to the different ways that people approach, you know, lead generation and all that businessy stuff. And so this year is going to be a little bit different. It's really going to be about figuring out what. exactly captivates me. That is the word for me of 2025. And as I tell individuals, my word, I am met with this whole idea of, wow, that's crazy, but like in a good way, because it's definitely a very high vibe word, captivating, captivate to captivate. I put a lot of thought into it. And just to kind of share a story of those moments when I have been the most captivated, I remember every single summer I would spend a month in Miami and a month in Puerto Rico with my respective grandmothers. And my Cuban grandmother on one hand was A really good storyteller, as was my entire family from a paternal perspective. And I would say that they really got into storytelling. So let's imagine they got home from work and they all worked in the police department and they had these amazing stories. Whether it was, you know, about criminals or if it was about, I don't even know, a salsero that they would have invited to like a Christmas party. I mean, a lot of my memories are a little bit of a Patchwork quilt, should I say? Point of the matter, they would use their body to really express themselves. They would stand up in the middle of the living room to absolutely, you know, be on stage, quote unquote. And I felt captivated, completely engrossed in what they were saying. And I'm pretty sure I had no idea what they were really, really saying. Because I was a little girl, but I was always really intrigued by the way they express themselves and the stories they would tell. And that's why for me, that is the word that popped up, captivating to captivate. And when I started looking up what it meant, it also had this idea that there has to be a willingness. be captivated. So as I think through this word of the year for myself, I invite you to think beyond some of the words that are in the atmosphere in your local area. Or wherever it is that you might reside. So, for example, if in your community you might hear words like, Oh, freedom, or peace, or contentment, or words like joy. Why not consider a word like, that is totally left field, but really nails the sensation you're going for. And then in the same way that the person who wrote this book about desire mapping, Danielle Laporte says, she basically said, you know, once you have your word or set of words, it's really about figuring out. a myriad of ways that you can feel that sensation. So if I want to feel engrossed, plugged in or captivated, it's not just like going to great adventure and, you know, going on a roller coaster and maybe I am totally captivated by an amazing ride. It can be something as so simple, so sweet as paying close attention to a little story that a son of mine has, you know, whether it was something that he caught in school or something that he just wants to share with me or retell from a story he has read. So for me, captivating has range. What about you? I would invite you to really think through. what you desire to feel in 2025. For me, as I mentioned, it was being captivated or captivating or captivate people. Because again, if you want a certain feeling, it really behooves you to emit that feeling yourself. So that also implies I have to be captivating. And So there we go. So for you really think that through, think through right now, maybe write it down at some point, a couple of words that really, really ignite something inside of you, something that might be, um, a little sleepy right now. It might be a little bit kind of, you know, not used. Just think of a word that you want to draw attention to in your life. And funny enough, When I chose that word, which is not the most common word I've seen, I started, of course, seeing that word, which has an actual scientific principle attached to it. Kind of like when you buy a particular car, you start to notice all those cars. So, Happy New Year. I'm thrilled that this podcast lives on. I'm thrilled that I had the opportunity to share with you my 2025 word, and I really endeavor to captivate you, captivate you in a way that makes you feel better. After listening to every single episode, and I really do invite you and hope that you can be very patient with me because this is a year of change when it comes to the way I go about, you know, sharing my gifts and talents. This is also going to be a year of change in terms of how I think about my business and my role and how I decide to you. You know, bring forth everything that I've learned, even new things. I just became a meditation practitioner. It's like official now I'm done with the program. So there'll be a lot of unexpected conversations, but also my ambition is really to make sure that you get value out of each and every single one of them. So in this one, I invite you to think about a word of the year, and I invite you to definitely consider how you might make it. different or set yourself apart from those that are in your area. It might really inspire other people to think more expansively about their own lives and their own experiences. Because every single person I've told this word to, captivating and captivated, like, It just brought a huge smile on their face and they really loved that word. They're like, I have never heard someone use that word in terms of the word of the year for them. And of course I say, I know you haven't because I really like using words that are different. That captivates me, right? It holds my interest. being a little different and, um, unexpected and be unafraid to do either. Okay. Happy new year until next Tuesday. And if we are not official yet, like if you haven't hit follow or subscribe, I invite you to go ahead and do that. Go ahead and do that. And if you want to send me a little note, I will put it in the show notes. Tell me that you actually subscribed or followed me. And. And I'll tell you a captivating story in exchange, I will email you. So you'll see my email in the show notes, have an amazing rest of your week. Thank you again for listening.

Episode 154 with Bronwen Everill who was a fellow of Gonville & Caius College, University of Cambridge from 2015 and was the Director of Cambridge's Centre of African Studies. In August, she joined the faculty of the Princeton Writing Program. She is a visiting fellow at the Laboratory for the Economics of Africa's Past, in the Department of Economics at Stellenbosh University. Bronwen recently publishing Africonomics, which is a short, bold story of Western economic thought about Africa. Bronwen argues that these interventions fail because they start from a misguided premise: that African economies just need to be more like the West. Ignoring Africa's own traditions of economic thought, Europeans and Americans assumed a set of universal economic laws that they thought could be applied anywhere. They enforced specifically Western ideas about growth, wealth, debt, unemployment, inflation, women's work and more, and used Western metrics to find African countries wanting. The West does not know better than African nations how an economy should be run. By laying bare the myths and realities of our tangled economic history, Africonomics moves from Western ignorance to African knowledge. What We Discuss With BronwenIn what ways does Africonomics challenge conventional Western views of African economies? How have historical misconceptions about African wealth shaped Western interventions on the continent? How did Western economic policies during colonial times disregard Africa's indigenous economic systems? How have Western metrics like GDP distorted perceptions of Africa's economic success or challenges?Examples of African traditions of economic thought that have been overlooked by Western interventions.Did you miss my previous episode where I discuss Powering Congo: Using Recycled Materials to Create Cutting-Edge Battery Technology for Businesses and Households? In this episode of *The Unsoberly Sober Show*, I dive deep into the mindset shifts that allow us to fundamentally change our relationship with alcohol. If you're looking to break the cycle of drinking by altering the way you *think*, this episode is for you. We start with three powerful questions from Dr. Wayne Dyer, designed to bring awareness to the significance of focusing on what's *good*, rather than just what's true. This subtle shift reveals how our thoughts are indeed the "ancestors" of our actions, influencing our behaviors and shaping our outcomes. Research shows that our repeated thoughts impact not just our mental framework but even our neural pathways, turning thoughts into beliefs that inform our habits and, ultimately, our lives. Studies in cognitive psychology, for instance, illustrate that visualizing a desired outcome can positively affect performance and motivation, making a case for rethinking how we approach sobriety. Next, I explore Abraham Maslow's concepts of deficiency motivation and growth motivation. Deficiency motivation centers on fulfilling perceived lacks (like using alcohol as a coping mechanism), which often results in exhaustion and burnout. Growth motivation, on the other hand, is a drive toward self-actualization—pushing beyond basic needs to develop and express one's fullest potential. When we focus on growth, we tap into a powerful intrinsic motivation that's more sustainable than mere "willpower." We close the episode by distinguishing between the willpower needed to resist drinking and the higher faculty of *free will*. Willpower, often fueled by deficiency motivation, quickly depletes. But by engaging free will through growth motivation, we can focus on long-term, positive thoughts anchored in what is good. When we make this shift, we find that changing our drinking habits becomes less about restriction and more about expansion, creating a life that feels so full that alcohol loses its allure. Tune in to this transformative episode to uncover the keys to thinking—and drinking—differently. Plus, get ready to explore the empowering mindset techniques that set the stage for a life of authentic freedom. #mindset #sobertribe #soberinspiration
Most people get caught up in the DOING in order to feel un-stressed. Doing, which we call Fast Action, might look like firing off that email, scheduling that meeting (right away), or worse, doing the work yourself in order to fix the problem so that we can get rid of feeling stressed. Unfortunately these leads to a vicious cycle where we get stuck in reactionary mode each time a problem arises. In this episode of the Stressproof podcast we're breaking down why it's not about the doing, but rather why we need to THINK differently under stress in order to BE the type of person that doesn't react toward similar situations and or people. What does the sense of self give humans over other animals, and how do our storytelling instincts set us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom? What can be learned about humans and animals by training a dog to allow humans to scan its brain with an MRI machine?Gregory Berns is a neuroscientist at Emory University and the author of several books, including Iconoclast: A Neuroscientist Reveals How to Think Differently, The Self Delusion: The New Neuroscience of How We Invent—and Reinvent—Our Identities, and his most recent work, Cowpuppy: An Unexpected Friendship and a Scientist's Journey into the Secret World of Cows.Greg and Gregory discuss the complex interplay between self-perception, social influence, and animal behavior. Referring to his work in The Self Delusion, Gregory delves into how our brains construct and reconstruct our identities, influenced by both sensory information and social pressures. Gregory used brain imaging and machine learning to study conformity, the psychological impacts of social media, and the balancing act between primal instincts and modern life. They also dive into the evolution of human storytelling compared to animal communication, Gregory's groundbreaking MRI research on dogs, and the deep connections formed through living on a farm and working with cows. This insightful episode also touches on the philosophical and theological questions around human behavior, aiming to provide a holistic understanding of the underlying neuroscience and psychology.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Show Links:Recommended Resources:AmygdalaAsch conformity experimentsKanizsa triangleDopamineVentral striatumUmweltMonty RobertsTemple GrandinGuest Profile:GregoryBerns.comFaculty Profile at Emory UniversityWikipedia ProfileSocial Profile on XSocial Profile on InstagramHis Work:Amazon Author PageCowpuppy: An Unexpected Friendship and a Scientist's Journey into the Secret World of CowsThe Self Delusion: The New Neuroscience of How We Invent—and Reinvent—Our IdentitiesWhat It's Like to Be a Dog: And Other Adventures in Animal NeuroscienceHow Dogs Love Us: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine BrainSatisfaction: Sensation Seeking, Novelty, and the Science of Finding True FulfillmentIconoclast: A Neuroscientist Reveals How to Think DifferentlyPsychology Today ArticlesEpisode Quotes:Human life is telling stories30:16: We're all storytellers, even if you write scientific papers. Ultimately, it's still a story where you do an experiment, you collect data, and yes, I guess at some level, we're testing hypotheses, but most scientific papers these days are not about that, to be honest. Most are more in the exploratory sense, where we're doing experiment because we want to understand something about the world. We might have an idea about it, but it's usually much more nuanced. And then you do the experiment, doesn't turn out the way you expect it. And then it's like, well, what happened? So you tell a story about what you think happened and what it means. And I think, ultimately, that is all that human life is. It is us telling stories, because if it weren't that, then we're not that much different than bees and all the other animals that I study, but we clearly are. Stories go beyond the current state of the art in terms of predictive models31:38: We tell stories to ourselves and to each other to have meaning in our lives. It's not the case that the machine is ever going to care about what's meaningful. So, I do think that meaning, in and of itself, has value to humans that has yet to be captured in any kind of computer model. Are preferences endogenous or constructed?07:36: I think we tend to fool ourselves a little bit in that our preferences are endogenous because it comes back to us thinking about us thinking. It's like, okay, well, I prefer vanilla ice cream over chocolate ice cream. Well, has it always been that way? I don't know. Or is it just something that I have come to believe out of habit, and it's not necessarily the case—or that it even changes based on the circumstance? Why the most meaningful experiences are often the most uncomfortable20:52: I've written a bit about the ways that we might get around that, and one of the ways is novel experiences. The thing about novel experiences is that they're anxiety-provoking—unless, I mean, for the minority of people who thrive on that. For most people, they like the status quo; they like the comfort of things being predictable, and things being unpredictable causes a great deal of anxiety. Even though, if you ask pretty much everyone, the most memorable experiences in their life, the things they think most fondly of, are probably the things that were most difficult, and the things that initially did cause all that anxiety or were uncomfortable. The things that we, as humans, attach meaning to are the things that are meaningful because they're difficult.

In today's episode, I have a powerful and insightful discussion with guest speaker Bob Hamp as part of a live Q&A we did with members of the Flying Free Kaleidoscope about the complexities of emotions, particularly anger, and the challenges faced by those in emotionally abusive relationships. Here's a summary of the key points and concepts:1. Understanding Emotions:Emotions as Drivers: Emotions are energy in motion that propel us forward and should be embraced rather than repressed.Indicators of Inner States: Emotions serve as indicators (like a dashboard) that reveal our internal states and beliefs, particularly anger, which signals that a boundary has been crossed.Anger as a Response: Anger can be a protective response to repeated boundary violations, masking deeper emotions such as pain or fear.2. The Need for Validation:Craving Validation: After experiencing emotional abuse, individuals often seek external validation to affirm their feelings and experiences due to a distorted self-image created by the abuser.Living in a House of Mirrors: Emotional abusers create an environment where one's self-perception is constantly challenged and distorted, leading to confusion and self-doubt.Research on Healing: Studies show that validation from others can help regulate the nervous system and facilitate healing for trauma survivors.3. Mutual Abuse vs. Conflictual Enmeshment:Mutual Abuse: This term suggests that both parties are equally culpable, but in abusive dynamics, there's often a power differential where one partner exerts control over the other.Conflictual Enmeshment: This involves two people blaming each other for their issues without one holding more power over the other. The dynamics can feel like mutual blame, but there's usually a more dominant party in emotionally abusive situations.4. Setting Boundaries:Empowerment Through Boundaries: Establishing personal boundaries is essential. Boundaries involve controlling one's response to others rather than attempting to control others' behaviors.Responses to Boundaries: Abusers often react negatively to boundaries, framing them as controlling behaviors. If you want to be someone who rarely thinks about food and feels completely in control of what you eat in a way that feels easy, then you have to learn how to adopt the inner psychology and eating habits of a ‘naturally thin' person. The glaring difference between the lifestyle of Burned Out Dieter vs the lifestyle of the ‘Naturally Thin' is that they're both making drastically different decisions based on their inner psychology and daily eating habits. So for example, a ‘naturally thin' person who eats consistent portions at every meal for years is on autopilot. And for Burned Out Dieters who are constantly getting on and off track with their eating — have created a habit of restrict-then-overeat. They also do things like: Cleaning their plate at every meal Pick at food while they're preparing it Eating when they're procrastinating, bored, or stressed So, the question then becomes, how do we choose to do the things that ‘naturally thin' people do consistently? The diet industry will tell you that it's about “eating less and moving more” and while that's factually accurate, it's shit advice and only half of the conversation. Everyone already knows what they should be doing to lose weight. The question is WHY aren't they doing it? No one in the diet industry wants to touch this question. It's easier to talk about eating protein, vegetables, and tracking your calories…but it's also why 95% of dieters are failing at long-term weight loss. Answering this question requires understanding how your inner psychology influences your eating behaviors. Join me on today's episode as we help you unravel your ties to emotional eating and develop the eating habits of the 'naturally thin'. Time is finite but so many of us are just not purposeful with it. People plan how they go to a movie better than they plan their life, the relationships they have. It's amazing how calculated we are about our movies and vacations but we don't do the same thing in our personal worlds. Hard work is a key to success but what's the point if there's no true balance? So many of us say we work hard for our families but do we really? Start defining achievement a little differently, you can't let your work define who you are. If you count how many winters, Fridays, ocean swims, football seasons, beach days you have in your life, it really puts how finite time is into perspective. If you've got 20 years left in your life, and you go snowboarding once a year, you probably have 20 of those days left. Think about how many more Halloweens you get with your kids when they are little. How are you taking advantage of those moments? The average kid and parent spends 300 days per year together from the time they are 0-18. Over 18 they spend an average of 30 days with their parents, 10 days a year if they don't live in the same town. Depending on how old your kids are, you might have spent over 50% of your total time with your kids already. You have to cheat the system and get more purposeful to get more out of those days. The key thing is becoming aware that time is finite. We go through our lives not being purposeful about these things that we deem most important. Cheat the system - do it differently. Think differently to what we usually do in our normal programs of life. How do we maximize the moments that we have? When you work hard, think about what you're giving up in its place. We all have things we care deeply about and we neglect them. The good news is: you can do something about it now. Now that we know this - what should we do? Write your own eulogy: connect the dots and design the specific commitments you want to make to leave the impact you desire to leave. What are the things you could be doing better so that you influence that outcome? Truly start life planning: how do you want to be remembered by your kids, how do you want people to speak about you, think about these things and be honest about where you stand. Take no days off: every single day you can improve something, whether it's yourself or a relationship. You can deal with a pain or challenge, and get healthier and smarter. Get a Memento Mori calendar. It's sobering, but also inspiring to see how much time you have. Think about your life accounts: health, relationships, wealth, business, friends, social, siblings, spiritual, travel etc. Some of your accounts have really positive balances and others are overdrawn. Prioritize those accounts accordingly Health should be number 1, you can't honor any of the other accounts if you're not feeling great and alive. You are going to outgrow certain things and certain relationships as you grow, accept that. Life is about counterbalance - there are times we'll have to be in the extreme in certain areas, the key is not to stay in the extreme too long. How long can you be in something until other areas start to suffer and/or deteriorate? CTA Please leave us a review at https://ratethispodcast.com/nla
