On a sunny December morning in 2014, just 10 days before Christmas, breakfast was in full swing at the busy Lindt Café in Sydney’s Martin Place. Around 8:30am, a customer noticed a man talking to the café’s manager, who seemed tense. Just over an hour later, at 9:44am, Man Haron Monis told everyone in the café that he had a bomb in his backpack and they were being held hostage. His demand? To speak with the Prime Minister on national radio. Ten years have passed since the Sydney Siege, which tragically claimed the lives of two innocent people: café manager Tori Johnson and mother of three, Katrina Dawson. To mark the anniversary, Vikki Petratis, host of The Unthinkable podcast, revisits the events of that day and reflects on the lasting impact it has had on the city. We examine the pivotal 2014 Sydney Siege, which catalyzed sweeping changes in Australia's security laws, and discuss how psychological biases like the availability heuristic and groupthink shape public opinion. From metadata retention laws to the influence of fear-driven policymaking, we unpack why societies are quick to trade freedom for a false sense of security—and what we can do to resist this trend. 15 hostages remain. For some, 10 hours of terror still awaits them. On the afternoon of December 15, 2014, offices were evacuated and rumours spread of bombs planted all around Sydney city, while hostages remained trapped inside the Lindt Cafe in Martin Place. One of Sydney’s most bustling pedestrian thoroughfares, which sat on the doorstep of the Lindt Cafe, was empty and deathly silent. Terrified men and women could be seen inside the large windows, a stark contrast to the festive Christmas decorations that hung beside them. Even though Man Monis, a radicalised terrorist, had forced hostages to turn in their mobile phones, some had hidden theirs within the cafe, meaning messages were slowly trickling out. Monis’ demands were not being met by police, radio stations or the Prime Minister at the time, Tony Abbott, and he was becoming increasingly agitated. But it was when three men escaped, that Monis’ temper reached a crescendo. With a gun to hostage Louisa Hope’s back, he threatened to shoot. These wouldn’t be the last hostages to escape over the course of the 16 hour siege, and it wouldn’t be the last time Monis threatened to shoot. In part two, we begin with the second escape, and the response of Monis, who was becoming more agitated by the minute. It was looking to be a warm, busy day when Tori Johnson arrived at work just after 6am on a Monday morning in December 2014. The 34-year-old was in charge at the Lindt cafe in Martin Place, and the lead up to Christmas was always chaotic, with customers purchasing gifts, like the iconic chocolate Lindt balls, for friends and family. At 7:30am, the doors opened, with customers flooding in. Among them were 38-year-old barrister Katrina Dawson, with colleagues Julie Taylor and Stefan Balafoutis. They were seated next to a mother and daughter, Robin and Louisa Hope, who even remarked on Katrina’s beautiful shoes. But just after 8:30am, a broad shouldered man with a baseball cap and backpack walked in, at first completely unnoticed. It was only when we he demanded some time afterwards that every door be immediately locked, that the 18 people inside the cafe realised something was seriously wrong. A Sydney siege survivor and the Anglican Dean of Sydney reflect on the ‘golden rule' this Easter – love your neighbour as yourself. “I honestly was freaking out. I thought I had a terrorist next to me.” Have you ever made a snap judgment based on how a person looked, or what a person was wearing? Kylie Beach was on a flight recently and the seat next to her was empty – but it wasn't meant to be. Eventually, the flight attendants found the missing passenger and moved him back to his allocated seat. “He was sitting a few rows back,” Kylie says, “and he was the stereotype of a Muslim-looking person.” He was flustered, he was listening to voice recordings on his phone – he was not a terrorist. He just wanted to sit with his friend. “If he had looked different, if he had been a white woman, I would just have not gone anywhere near terrorism.” Kylie Beach also happens to be Communications Director of Common Grace, a movement that seeks to connect people of Christian faith to social justice. At the time, she was working on the organisation's Easter campaign, ‘Love Thy Neighbour', and she remembered her ‘neighbour' on that flight. Did her thoughts demonstrate love, or prejudice? This is exactly what the campaign is about. Common Grace is releasing a series of blogs and videos in the lead up to Easter, looking at what it means to love others and be a good neighbour – especially when your neighbour seems ‘different', or could be considered your ‘enemy'. In this episode of Life & Faith, Sydney Siege survivor, Louisa Hope, walks us through what happened that day and how it led her on a path to actively connect with and love her Muslim neighbours. Then, Anglican Dean of Sydney, Kanishka Raffel, connects the ‘golden rule' to the Easter story. Find out more about Common Grace: www.commongrace.org.au. A US expert believes the Lindt cafe siege was a terrorist act but his Australian counterparts have argued otherwise. Tuesday also saw six media organisations join forces to call for the suppressed identities of two DDP solicitors to be revealed. Michael Safi and Monica Tan talk it all over in the final recap of this inquest segment
When is a sheikh not a sheikh? Monday sees an expert witness on Islam take the stand, as well as the director of public prosecutions (DPP) solicitor facing the question of why Man Haron Monis was granted bail in 2013. Michael Safi was at the inquest and is joined by Bridie Jabour to discuss the evidence
Blame for gunman Man Haron Monis being on bail in December 2014 finally seems clearer. However legal technicalities meant proceedings stalled and much of what was discussed was kept from the media and, therefore, the public. Bridie Jabour is back to ask Michael Safi whether Friday marked a breakthrough in the inquest
Detective senior constable Melanie Staples, who recommended against granting Man Haron Monis bail in 2013, emerged as an impressive witness at the Sydney siege inquest. Michael Safi is joined by Monica Tan to discuss Thursday's evidence
Why did Asio officers attend Monis hearings without informing the police? This extraordinary information was revealed late on Wednesday, after the inquest heard that a police constable knew Monis was on bail when he was charged with additional offences in 2013. Bridie Jabour and Michael Safi unpick the key moments of a complicated day
Why was Man Haron Monis free in December 2014? The Director of Public Prosecutions continued wrestling with this question on day two. Michael Safi discusses the key moments with Helen Davidson

Michael Safi covered the inquest solo today but is joined again by Monica Tan to talk through what he learned. Witnesses included a woman Man Haron Monis dated and an associate from Iran who could be the closest we will come during these two weeks to hearing from a friend
Michael Safi is joined by Monica Tan, both of whom watched day five of the Sydney siege inquest unfold. Today they heard from a key social worker and they discuss whether further details about the Man Haron Monis's family life will ever answer more questions than they raise
Michael Safi asks Bridie Jabour about covering day four of the Sydney siege inquest, during which she heard from witnesses who said they felt intimidated by Man Haron Monis, the contents of a letter from his daughter in Iran and detail about his online activity, including whether he communicated with Isis
Michael Safi and Bridie Jabour recap the third day of the Sydney siege inquest, during which they heard from two psychiatrists who treated Man Haron Monis. It emerged that neither psychiatrist knew about the other and gave differing provisional diagnoses
