The NSW Police Tactical Operations Unit deals with the most extraordinary police operations - terror attacks, sieges, and armed confrontations. For this reason, those wishing to join the command are subject to rigorous selection and training processes, to prepare them for the life-threatening situations they could unexpectedly face. Ben Besant is best known for being the sniper who stormed the Lindt Cafe. However, he spent most of his 20-year career in the TOU, where he was regularly faced with life-or-death situations. Hear about some of them in this episode. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On the 15th of December 2014, the usually bustling Martin Place in Sydney's CBD became the epicentre of chaos, as a terrorist held 18 people hostage inside the Lindt Cafe. Ben Besant was the Tactical Operations Unit officer that brought the 16 hour ordeal to a close by eliminating the terrorist. In the decade since that day he's been known as 'Officer A', but as of November 2024, Ben is stepping into the limelight to share his account of what happened across those brutal 16 hours. He speaks to Ant about his role and mindset during the siege, and the 'high price' he's paid for his service as a result. 10 years ago, Sydney came to a standstill. A lone gunman took 18 hostages captive inside the Lindt Café, some of whom escaped, others were trapped for 16 harrowing hours. The siege ended in the deaths of two innocent people—Tori Johnson, executed by the terrorist, and Katrina Dawson, struck by a ricochet from a police bullet when the Tactical Operations Unit stormed the building. In the aftermath, public outrage boiled over as the government and police were heavily criticised for their handling of the crisis. So what really happened behind the scenes? On a sunny December morning in 2014, just 10 days before Christmas, breakfast was in full swing at the busy Lindt Café in Sydney’s Martin Place. Around 8:30am, a customer noticed a man talking to the café’s manager, who seemed tense. Just over an hour later, at 9:44am, Man Haron Monis told everyone in the café that he had a bomb in his backpack and they were being held hostage. His demand? To speak with the Prime Minister on national radio. Ten years have passed since the Sydney Siege, which tragically claimed the lives of two innocent people: café manager Tori Johnson and mother of three, Katrina Dawson. Ben aka "Officer A" VA (Medal of Valor) was brought up in the Hawkesbury north-west of Sydney.  'Officer A' was in the New South Wales Police Force for nearly 20 years. The Lindt Cafe siege was a terrorist attack that occurred on 15–16 December 2014 when a lone gunman, shit bag, held hostage ten customers and eight employees of a Lindt chocolate café in the APA Building in Martin Place, Sydney, Australia. Shitbag was armed with a pump shotgun and a 'backpack bomb' and held 18 hostages for 17 hours before police stormed in.Support the show - https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=9LG48GC49TW38Website - www.zerolimitspodcast.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/zero.limits.podcast/?hl=en

After 34 years in the police and 25 years in homicide, it was former Detective Inspector Gary Jubelin's job to catch killers. He worked on some of the biggest criminal cases in Australia, including the Lindt Cafe siege, the Bowraville murders, and the gruesome killing of drug dealer Terry Falconer. But it was the case of William Tyrrell that would cost Gary his career. In 2020, he was convicted for illegally recording four conversations with a person of interest in that investigation. Overnight, he was taken off a case he'd spent four years searching for answers on. And now, many in his old career refuse to associate with him.  So instead, he's been befriending criminals who've done their time. Hardened ones…. the ones he used to be tasked with locking up. He wants to understand badness from the other side, to unpack what makes a human do evil things.  He joins Gemma Bath today to talk about that journey. This week's guest is Gary Jubelin. Gary worked in the NSW Police Force for 34 years and was one of Australia's most well known homicide detectives, leading investigations into several high profile murders and disappearances. This episode is a bit heavier than usual and contains conversations that some listeners may find confronting or triggering. Because of the nature of Gary's work we discuss missing persons as well as murder, including the murder of young children. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander listeners are also advised that this conversation mentions the names of deceased persons. So everyone please be kind to yourselves and keep your own boundaries in mind before listening to this one.Gary lead the investigation into the disappearance of William Tyrell, the serial killing of three aboriginal children in Bowraville, he ran the crime scene following the Lindt Cafe siege in Sydney, has investigated organised crimes and gangs, is most well known for his work solving missing person cold cases, and was even the inspiration for a main character in one of the Underbelly TV series seasons.Gary eventually resigned from the Police Force after allegations of misconduct had him removed from the William Tyrell case and he was later found guilty of illegally recording conversations with a witness.Gary has a book out and a podcast both called I Catch Killers, which I'd highly recommend, it's one of my most listened to and it's super interesting if you love true crime. He interviews other high profile detectives as well as people on the other side of the coin that have committed some of these crimes. We cover all of these topics, including how he goes about solving such complex crimes, his work ethic and the rigours of being a detective, the pressures of becoming a high profile cop. This was a really interesting and different chat that I'm really proud of and excited for you to listen to, I think you'll get a lot out of it. 15 hostages remain. For some, 10 hours of terror still awaits them.  On the afternoon of December 15, 2014, offices were evacuated and rumours spread of bombs planted all around Sydney city, while hostages remained trapped inside the Lindt Cafe in Martin Place.  One of Sydney’s most bustling pedestrian thoroughfares, which sat on the doorstep of the Lindt Cafe, was empty and deathly silent. Terrified men and women could be seen inside the large windows, a stark contrast to the festive Christmas decorations that hung beside them.  Even though Man Monis, a radicalised terrorist, had forced hostages to turn in their mobile phones, some had hidden theirs within the cafe, meaning messages were slowly trickling out.  Monis’ demands were not being met by police, radio stations or the Prime Minister at the time, Tony Abbott, and he was becoming increasingly agitated.  But it was when three men escaped, that Monis’ temper reached a crescendo. With a gun to hostage Louisa Hope’s back, he threatened to shoot.  These wouldn’t be the last hostages to escape over the course of the 16 hour siege, and it wouldn’t be the last time Monis threatened to shoot.  In part two, we begin with the second escape, and the response of Monis, who was becoming more agitated by the minute. They were seated next to a mother and daughter, Robin and Louisa Hope, who even remarked on Katrina’s beautiful shoes.  But just after 8:30am, a broad shouldered man with a baseball cap and backpack walked in, at first completely unnoticed. It was only when we he demanded some time afterwards that every door be immediately locked, that the 18 people inside the cafe realised something was seriously wrong. Events in Britain, the New South Wales coroner's report on the Lindt Cafe siege, and a new attack in Australia have given a much sharper edge to the debate about how to handle Islamist terrorism. Amid the hype, ANU security expert John Blaxland provides a reality check. He says while there's an escalation of and change in the nature of terrorist attacks, collaboration between Australian police and intelligence services is world class. On the Lindt Cafe siege, Blaxland says that although in hindsight the police could have done things differently, it's “preposterous” to insist the special forces were required to resolve it. “We actually need to be very circumspect about over-committing our military.” He's sceptical of the push for a homeland security department, saying a “refined set of arrangements” is in place for interdepartmental co-operation. On the question of the local Muslim population, he says most don't subscribe to a fundamentalist, expansionist Islam – violent jihadists are outliers. “They're people that have been on the edge, if not mentally then certainly socially.” Speaking about this week's revelations of Chinese influence in Australia, Blaxland says the scale is enormous and unprecedented. “We have had an ongoing growing tension emerge between our security and strategic consciousnesses and our economic consciousness.”

A continuation of last week's episode on Australian hate speech laws. In this part we discuss the Cronulla Riots, and how our backgrounds shape our views on this subject. My guest Ben (@Atticus_Amber) is a lawyer who works in the building where the Lindt Cafe siege took place - he happened not to be at work that day, but hearing him describe the moment when he realized hiss colleagues were trapped in a building is absolutely gut-wrenching. My guest Joel (@JoelRDodd) is an activist who describes himself as sensitive to racism, because he grew up a white South African and had to unlearn a lot of racism he grew up with. ---- articles mentioned in podcast: Jerry Coyne's blogpost https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2016/09/07/lecture-invitation-to-watson-rescinded-because-of-remarks-on-race-he-made-in-2007/ Free Speech Warriors are Missing the point abt 18C http://www.theaustralian.com.au/opinion/free-speech-warriors-are-missing-the-point-about-18c/news-story/bbe10592eb3a73dfd9c5d870b524f302 The impact of section 18C & other civil antivilification laws in Australia - University of Wollongong http://ro.uow.edu.au/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3103&context=lhapapers Catch up with part 1 of this discussion here: https://soundcloud.com/politeconversations/pc-panel-discussion-4-australian-hate-speech-laws-part-1 Support the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/nicemangos :)

I have to say this was a heavy subject to discuss as an outsider, but tremendously educational. Even looking up some of the stuff later, that came up in conversation like the Cronulla riots, definitely provided me with more context to the level of divisiveness and hatred that exists towards Muslim minorities there. While, of course I am incredibly against anti muslim bigotry, I don't think legislating speech will be an effective form of combating it. Incitement to violence and harm, harming someone's private property excluded of course. On the other hand, this also demonstrates to me that refusing to address underlying problematic attitudes in minority communities (out of good intent to protect them from discrimination)can result in furthering divides. The specific part which concerns me because of how subjectively it can be interpreted is the religious vilification law mentioned here: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/act-parliament-passes-religious-vilification-laws-20160804-gqlagu.html https://twitter.com/NiceMangos/status/762418039212023809 Join me and my guests Ben @Atticus_Amber (lawyer) and Joel @JoelRDodd (activist) as we discuss the parameters of free speech, the implications of heavily regulating it. Ben is a lawyer who works in the same building as the Lindt Cafe, where the terrifying 2014 siege took place http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/worldnews/11293744/Sydney-siege-in-pictures-Islamist-gunman-holds-hostages-in-Lindt-cafe.html Joel is an activist and a South African immigrant to Australia. He says he's had to spend a lot of time unlearning the racism he grew up with in South Africa. ---- Links RACIAL DISCRIMINATION ACT 1975 - SECT 18C http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/rda1975202/s18c.html --- SECT 18D (Exemptions) http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/rda1975202/s18d.html ----- SECT 67A http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/act/consol_act/da1991164/s67a.html ---- Even tho we don't have a specific religious vilification law in Canada, we do technically hv a blasphemy law on the books http://centreforinquiry.ca/canadas-blasphemous-libel-law/ And even tho it lies dormant, just the fact it exists is worrying. Religions may not be a protected class in Canada, but there is a sensitivity to especially a minority religion like Islam, which makes it much harder for progressive muslims and ex muslims to fight for LGBT equality for example. Despite having a supportive school curriculum https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2015/05/04/fact-checking-10-claims-made-by-parents-against-the-ontario-sex-ed-curriculum.html The schools end up backing down instead of standing their ground unfortunately. RTR I MJ The terror attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, changed the way we think about politics, society and safety as the world entered the 21st century. But as the world learned the identities of the attackers, the response affected one community much more acutely: Muslims. The media coverage of the 2001 attack and other subsequent incidents in our region, including the Lindt Cafe siege in Sydney’s Martin Place in December 2014, increased the feeling among many in the Muslim community that they are not welcome or safe in the Australian cities that they call home. So, in this increasingly tense climate, how does it feel to navigate the city as a young Muslim? Dallas Rogers spoke with Western Sydney University PhD candidate Rhonda Itaoui about her research examining the Islamophobia young Muslims experience in Australia. She also explores her own experiences as a young Muslim woman and the success of campaigns like #illridewithyou in countering Islamophobia. The New South Wales Police Association has launched an attack on the Lindt Cafe siege inquest, claiming it has destroyed the reputations of police. The Coroner's Office rejects the allegations, saying it's not a "witch hunt" but a careful and thorough examination to assist police in future. Aaron reports.
