Short Description David Brown and Brian Smith examine the growing number of automotive brands entering Australia and the challenges of building identity in a crowded market. They discuss how school planning can unintentionally create transport problems, reflect on Sydney's transformation through projects such as Martin Place and George Street, explore how AI could reshape traffic management, and review the Kia EV9 electric SUV. The program also looks at the historic Mille Miglia and the people who shape transport and city-building decisions. Episode Breakdown • New car brands and market identity — 00:00 • Schools, transport and long-term planning — 10:20 • Martin Place and Sydney's public spaces — 19:57 • Mille Miglia history and heritage racing — 32:08 • AI, data and managing city movement — 37:33 • Kia EV9 road test and family practicality — 47:41 Full Summary New car brands and market identity (00:00) The program opens with discussion about Chery Group's new Lepas electric vehicle brand and the broader trend of manufacturers creating multiple marques to target different buyers. David and Brian question whether consumers can easily distinguish between increasingly similar brands and consider the importance of heritage, dealership experience, service support and brand identity in a rapidly changing EV market. Schools, transport and long-term planning (10:20) A report highlighted by Brian argues that locating schools on cheaper fringe land can create long-term transport costs and car dependency. The conversation explores school travel behaviour, walking buses, teacher accessibility, school transport services and the need to integrate transport planning into education infrastructure decisions from the outset. Martin Place and Sydney's public spaces (19:57) Using historic images of Martin Place, David reflects on the political and legal battles that shaped one of Sydney's best-known civic spaces. The discussion expands to George Street pedestrianisation, Circular Quay improvements, the value of public space, awnings, pedestrian priorities and the leadership required to deliver lasting urban change. Mille Miglia history and heritage racing (32:08) Brian reports on the latest Mille Miglia, won by Argentine siblings Juan and Margarita Tonconogy in a 1931 Alfa Romeo. The segment celebrates the endurance event's history, iconic machinery and famous competitors while also acknowledging the significant safety risks that accompanied road racing in earlier decades. AI, data and managing city movement (37:33) The feature story examines New York City's expansion of AI-powered traffic and pedestrian monitoring. David and Brian discuss how continuous data collection, machine learning and adaptive traffic systems could improve transport management, while also considering privacy concerns, governance and the need to combine technology with human expertise. Kia EV9 road test and family practicality (47:41) David reviews the Kia EV9, describing it as a large electric SUV that ranges from practical family transport to high-performance flagship. The discussion covers pricing, cabin features, seating layouts, efficiency, EV driving characteristics and the challenges of balancing size, practicality and performance in modern family vehicles. Program wrap-up (55:23) David thanks Brian Smith and the Overdrive team, reminding listeners that extended content is available through the program's podcast and social media channels. During ANZAC Day Welcome to Country ceremonies across Sydney, Canberra, Perth and Melbourne, a small group of people booed Indigenous Elders as they spoke. At Martin Place it was especially confronting: Uncle Ray, the Elder who delivered the Welcome to Country, is himself a veteran whose grandfather served in the Light Horse Brigade and whose brothers served in Vietnam. A man who served this country, booed at a dawn service. There were 11,000 people at Martin Place this year, more than double the year before, so the respect was overwhelming. But the boos cut through the silence in the worst possible way. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gold has had a remarkable 12 months. From the low in May-June last year, around US$ 3,500 an ounce, to the high of the January 2026 spike, around US$5,400 an ounce, the precious metals rallied almost 70%. It was during this period that lines formed in Martin Place outside ABC Bullion. Then, gold got the wobbles - particularly as war broke out in the Middle East. Whilst it didn't fall in a straight line, the precious metal fell from US$5,400 to a low of US$3,800 by late March - a 20% wipeout. With a tentative ceasefire in place and normal programming (i.e. US dollar weakness, inflation expectations easing, lower rates) potentially resuming, gold could be experiencing a reboot, where investors pile back in at a significant discount to where we were just a couple of months ago. Regardless of what the gold price does, there are a handful of ASX-listed miners that should be able to generate significant cash flow given their low costs, operational efficiency, and healthy margins. In this episode, Acorn Capital's Rick Squire and Datt Capital's Emanuel Datt run the ruler over four such names for your consideration. This episode was filmed on Wednesday, 8th April 2026.

REPUBLISHED EPISODEFollowing the recents events in Bondi, if you missed previous episodes this was one not to be missed surrounding the events of radical islamic terrorist ideology (Denied by the government!) that occurred at the Lindt Cafe Sydney on the 15th December 2014. On today's episode I sit down with the NSW Police Tactical Operations Unit Officer Ben Besant also known as "Officer A". He was the TOU officer who killed the Lindt Cafe terrorist and he tells us about the moment he came face-to-face with the killer who terrorised Sydney and how he also expected to die also airing his frustration as senior police hesitated while a hostage was executed. Due to the multiple current suppression orders Ben's full name and identity to an extent is still kept anonymous.Ben Beasant aka "Officer A" VA (Medal of Valor) was brought up in the Hawkesbury north-west of Sydney. 'Officer A' was in the New South Wales Police Force for nearly 20 years. The Lindt Cafe siege was a terrorist attack that occurred on 15–16 December 2014 when a lone gunman, shit bag, held hostage ten customers and eight employees of a Lindt chocolate café in the APA Building in Martin Place, Sydney, Australia. Shitbag was armed with a pump shotgun and a 'backpack bomb' and held 18 hostages for 17 hours before police stormed in.Send us a text however note we cannot reply through these means. Few films strike the perfect balance between dark humour, bleak violence, and unforgettable characters quite like Fargo (1996). In this week's Born to Watch deep dive, the boys return to the bitter cold of Minnesota to revisit a Coen Brothers classic in our full Fargo Movie 1996 Review. Whitey, Gow and Morgz each recount their own memories of first seeing Fargo, or in Dan's case, pretending he remembers anything from the 90s, before jumping headfirst into one of the most uniquely crafted crime films ever made. The episode kicks off with the lads debating their first screening. Whitey vividly remembers dragging everyone to the Dendy at Martin Place, feeling like a highbrow film buff discovering something special. Gow recalls the off-beat charm hitting him straight away. Dan, naturally, remembers nothing, except that he probably recommended the film, selected the seats, and probably did everything else. Classic Morgz. From there, the group dives into just how extraordinary Fargo's cast was at the time. The Coens pulled together a line-up of "relative nobodies" only to turn them into household names nearly three decades later. The chat quickly turns to Minnesota cold weather, obscure fast-food chains, and one of the great running bits of the episode, exactly how many times Morgz allegedly found himself "accidentally" next to someone mid-romp during their travels. The boys also unpack the brilliance of Frances McDormand's Marge Gunderson, who doesn't even appear in the film's first 34 minutes but completely owns the narrative once she arrives. She's sharp, funny, methodical, and easily one of the greatest characters of the '90s.Whitey breaks down the film's critical reception, comparing its Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb scores with those of past Born to Watch heavy hitters, such as Jaws, Rocky, The Terminator, and Catch Me If You Can. Morgs jumps in with Film School for Fuckheads, exploring how the Coens weaponised "Minnesota Nice" to create tension using politeness, silence, and awkwardness as narrative devices. From the meticulously written stuttering dialogue in William H. Macy's script to the off-kilter pacing of small-town conversations, the Coens built an atmosphere where the horror is subtle, creeping, and drenched in snow.Gow rolls through the cast, shining a spotlight on Steve Buscemi's legendary "funny looking" performance and the near-silent menace of Peter Stormare, who delivers only 18 lines across the film yet becomes one of its most iconic figures. The boys get into the famous wood-chipper scene, the fake "true story" marketing trick, and how half the audience in 1996 genuinely believed the events were real. There's also classic Born to Watch chaos, from detours into Shameless, to the worst movie endings ever made, to hookers in Hawaii, to Playboy magazines in glove boxes, to the eternal question: "Would you make sure your licence plates were right if you'd just kidnapped someone?" Just another Wednesday on Born to Watch. The crew rounds things out with The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, celebrating the film's tight 94-minute runtime, near-perfect dialogue, incredible performances, legendary cinematography from Roger Deakins, and the deep satisfaction of a crime story where normal, everyday people take centre stage.Fargo isn't just a film, it's a vibe. A cold, bleak, funny, violent, polite vibe that the Born to Watch boys unpack with equal parts nostalgia and nonsense. Strap in, grab your Arby's, and enjoy one of our best episodes yet.#YouBetchaJOIN THE CONVERSATION Is Fargo the greatest dark comedy of the '90s? Does the wood-chipper still make you squirm? On the 15th of December 2014, a terrorist took over the Lindt Chocolate café in Martin Place, in the heart of Sydney, Australia, holding 18 customers and staff hostage, creating a siege that would last for over 16 hours. Although numerous hostages escaped, by the time the event conclude,d 2 innocent people were dead, 4 others were injured. For 10 years, this incident was suppressed under a government-mandated gag order. This prevented the New South Wales Police Tactical Operations Unit (or TOU) members from even publicly revealing their names. As a result, despite a detailed and scathing coroner's inquest report, the largest and most expensive in Australian history, there has been very little discussion about what actually happened that night, particularly from a tactical perspective. In keeping with the standard policy of The Debrief, we will not be discussing the name, objectives, or affiliations of the terrorist in the hope that time will erase his memory. We will, of course, be discussing the names of the team, and in this case, hostages, because they are heroes and need to be remembered. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Ben Besant. Guest:My guest today is Ben Besant. Ben, or ‘Officer A' as he was identified in the coroner's report, was the lead member of the Alpha Team during the intervention and the officer who engaged and killed the terrorist. He is currently the author of a book Tiger! Tiger! Tiger! which details not only what happened that night but also explains a very personal battle to recover his mental health following ‘the Lindt Café siege.'Resources: Ben Besant - https://tigertigertigerbook.com/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086482286065#Resolute Ready - https://resoluteready.com/Official Report - https://coroners.nsw.gov.au/documents/findings/2017/lindt_cafe_findings-and-recommendations.pdf

On the 15th of December 2014, the usually bustling Martin Place in Sydney's CBD became the epicentre of chaos, as a terrorist held 18 people hostage inside the Lindt Cafe. Ben Besant was the Tactical Operations Unit officer that brought the 16 hour ordeal to a close by eliminating the terrorist. In the decade since that day he's been known as 'Officer A', but as of November 2024, Ben is stepping into the limelight to share his account of what happened across those brutal 16 hours. He speaks to Ant about his role and mindset during the siege, and the 'high price' he's paid for his service as a result. This episode contains Ben Besant’s first-hand experience of the Lindt Café Siege and includes discussions of terrorism, violence, death and PTSD. 10 years ago, Sydney came to a standstill. A lone gunman took 18 hostages captive inside the Lindt Café, some of whom escaped, others were trapped for 16 harrowing hours. The siege ended in the deaths of two innocent people—Tori Johnson, executed by the terrorist, and Katrina Dawson, struck by a ricochet from a police bullet when the Tactical Operations Unit stormed the building. In the aftermath, public outrage boiled over as the government and police were heavily criticised for their handling of the crisis. So what really happened behind the scenes? In this episode, hear two firsthand accounts from those who lived it. Crime Insiders is hosted by Brent Sanders and Kathryn Fox. Guests in this episode include Danny Mikati and Chris Craner. On a sunny December morning in 2014, just 10 days before Christmas, breakfast was in full swing at the busy Lindt Café in Sydney’s Martin Place. Around 8:30am, a customer noticed a man talking to the café’s manager, who seemed tense. Just over an hour later, at 9:44am, Man Haron Monis told everyone in the café that he had a bomb in his backpack and they were being held hostage. His demand? To speak with the Prime Minister on national radio. Ten years have passed since the Sydney Siege, which tragically claimed the lives of two innocent people: café manager Tori Johnson and mother of three, Katrina Dawson. To mark the anniversary, Vikki Petratis, host of The Unthinkable podcast, revisits the events of that day and reflects on the lasting impact it has had on the city. A never before heard insight into centre of the siege. From communicating with snipers across the scene, to briefing the Prime Minister. But it's not all as it seems. The public was told a different story. Danny is a former NSW Police Officer who was a pivotal part of three of Sydney's most high profile criminal investigations. The Bilal Skaf case, also known as the Sydney Gang Rapes saw Danny as part of a search crew - looking for victims and building a case against Skaf and his affiliates. The Cronulla Riots, where Danny stood guard at the Lakemba Mosque amid an onslaught of violence; and then the Lindt Cafe Siege, arguably Sydney's most notable hostage situation. Danny goes into intense detail, and outlines beat by beat the details and processes of the investigation and the convictions. Unpack Danny's career in the force and the work he's doing now with host Brent Sanders. To see more of Danny, he can be found on Tik Tok. On today's Zero Limits Podcast I am joined in the studio for a chat with Mick F. former NSW Police Tactical Operations Unit Operator better know as the TOU. During his 14 plus year career Mick was involved in multiple incidents which includes being the officer involved shooting at the Kurnell siege in 2012. Only two years later Mick was alongside Officer A "Ben" at the Lindt Cafe Siege that was broadcasted live over every media outlet. The Lindt Café siege was a terrorist attack that occurred on 15–16 December 2014 when a lone gunman, Man Haron Monis, held hostage ten customers and eight employees of a Lindt Chocolate Café in the APA Building in Martin Place, Sydney, Australia. The Sydney siege led to a 16-hour standoff, after which a gunshot was heard from inside and police officers from the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) stormed the café. Hostage Tori Johnson was killed by Monis and hostage Katrina Dawson was killed by a police bullet ricochet in the subsequent raid. Monis was also killed. Three other hostages and a police officer were injured by police gunfire during the raid. Leaving the TOU fulltime unit in 2016 and moving to the North Coast and returned to general duties policing however in the part time tactical response capability regional NSW he was then involved in the Taree siege where the offender was killed by a tactical police officer. 120 years ago this coming Monday seven pioneer motorists met at the oldAustralia Hotel in Castlereagh Street. That meeting on the 20 th March 1903 saw theformation of the Automobile Club of Australia, the meeting called by ‘Harrie'Skinner, after an incident in George Street with his 4.5HP De Dion made himrealise that motorists of the day had few rights under existing legislation. Thefirst car to be imported to Sydney had arrived in April 1900, and some three yearslater just a handful of ‘horseless carriages' were plying the streets of Sydney. TheAutomobile Clubs first event, a Motor Gymkhana at the Agricultural Showgroundson the 5 th Dec. 1903, members motoring from Martin Place to Centennial Park andthen on to Coogee. In 1919 the title Royal was conferred on the Automobile Cluband today it's proudly holds the title of the oldest Motoring Club in Australia. On today's episode I sit down with the NSW Police Tactical Operations Unit Officer Ben also known as "Officer A". He was the TOU officer who killed the Lindt Cafe terrorist and he tells us about the moment he came face-to-face with the killer who terrorised Sydney and how he also expected to die also airing his frustration as senior police hesitated while a hostage was executed. Due to the multiple current suppression orders Ben's full name and identity to an extent is still kept anonymous. Ben aka "Officer A" VA (Medal of Valor) was brought up in the Hawkesbury north-west of Sydney. Shitbag was armed with a pump shotgun and a 'backpack bomb' and held 18 hostages for 17 hours before police stormed in.Support the show - https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=9LG48GC49TW38Website - www.zerolimitspodcast.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/zero.limits.podcast/?hl=en

Simon, Natasha, and John share the stories behind their favourite Christmas carols. --- It's not quite a Bridget Jones-style situation – sobbing into shiraz and lip-syncing to “All by myself” on Christmas eve – but this year, Justine Toh is all alone in the recording booth for Life and Faith. Regular hosts Simon Smart and Natasha Moore have scarpered off before Christmas, with Simon on long service leave in Canada and Natasha off to the U.S. for a white Christmas. So Justine delves into the back catalogue of Life and Faith and unearths a gem: an episode from 2014 where Simon, Natasha, and John Dickson share their favourite Christmas carols and the stories behind them. John explains why Hark the Herald Angels Sing isn't just a beautiful tune but expresses rich theological truths in poetic form. He also discusses how Christmas carols often speak of two advents, or comings, of Jesus: his lowly birth as that baby in the manger and his promised return in glory. Natasha relates the fascinating history behind her favourite carol O Holy Night that, among other things, briefly halted the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 as French and German soldiers called a Christmas truce, and was the first song to be broadcast on the radio in 1906. Simon, invoking Scrooge from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, bah humbugs about the way Away in a Manger, as he sees it, diminishes the powerful idea of the incarnation: the Christian claim that God became fully human in Jesus. “The sweet baby Jesus we're hearing about in this carol – you don't get any sense that he might actually grow up at any point. This idea that even as a baby ‘no crying he makes' – I just want to throw up when I hear that bit,” Simon says. “That's not the Christian story. Jesus is meant to be fully God and fully human, and he's not fully human if he doesn't cry.” Reflecting on the year when planes disappeared into the Indian Ocean, or were shot down over the Ukraine, and that ended with the Sydney siege at the Lindt Café in Martin Place, John says that the Christmas message remains one of joy, even in a gloomy time. “It'd be wrong to think that Christmas was about happiness. It is about joy though, that sense that despite everything, God is for us and he's come towards us as one of us. And that does give a perspective and hope that is real joy.” --- SUBSCRIBE to Life & Faith on Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/cpxpodcast OR on Spotify: http://cpx.video/spotify FIND US on Facebook: www.facebook.com/publicchristianity FOLLOW US on Twitter: www.twitter.com/cpx_tweet
