It's the final episode... Notes from this episode: Weekly THM newsletter: http://bit.ly/2lA3aPl My incredible podcast editor, Eilise Bonebright: heyeilise@gmail.com 5 seasons, 130 episodes and so many incredible nuggets of wisdom gained in between but it's officially time to end That's So Maven. As sad as I am to share this, I also know that the time is right. It's been an amazing journey but all good things must come to an end and for the podcast, the time is now. So in today's episode I'm getting honest about why I've made this decision (there are many reasons) as well as sharing about some big decisions in 2019 and how they will affect this next decade. No new humans to interview, topics to jump into or new wellness trends to explore. Just me and the mic and my honest truth. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for tuning in. It's been a wild ride and I'm excited to see what's to come in the future. Onwards and upwards! Please don't forget to rate + review in iTunes if you love the podcast. It's part of the reason you have been seeing more posts about sustainability on THM and in my personal life I've found myself gravitating towards resources that are discussing it. One of the most relatable and empowering of these resources is The Good Trade, a website founded by AmyAnn Cadwell, a leading voice in the sustainability movement, an entrepreneur and social impact angel investor. She wears many hats, but educating the world on how to make more sustainable choices is the primary of them. The Healthy Maven and That's So Maven has always been a place where we discuss health and wellness and how to take better care of yourself, but you cannot take care of yourself while ignoring the health of the planet. They are one and the same and need equal attention and respect. So today we are chatting about this parallel between sustainability and wellness and how to make everyday choices for sustainability and curb our fast fashion addiction. On today's episode we also discuss: AmyAnn's background and getting a degree in social entrepreneurship Why she launched The Good Trade in 2014 and what inspired her decision "The True Cost" and how fast fashion became so popular How to shop more sustainably and her favorite sustainable clothing brands How to prioritize decision making when it comes to sustainability Everyday changes we can all implement to live more sustainably Making sustainability conversations accessible and less scary ...and so much more! This episode feels incredibly full circle for me. I remember following Gina Harney's blog all the way back in 2009 while a junior in college. In some ways this feels like the hay day of blogging. I would wake up, grab my coffee and check-in with my healthy living blogs each morning on my google blog reader. The Fitnessista was at the top of this list. 10 years later, Gina is on That's So Maven to chat all about her blogging journey and how the landscape has changed since she first started. Gina Harney is a personal trainer and group fitness professional. She runs online programs and blogs about her journey over on The Fitnessista. She's also a Mama to two awesome daughters and a wife to who many of us know as "The Pilot". The thing that I love most about Gina is her transparency. She has taught me so much simply by sharing her experiences. From getting her breast implants removed to sharing her postpartum recovery journey, it truly is an honor to have Gina share the mic with me today. On today's episode we also discuss: Gina's journey and why she started The Fitnessista How the landscape of blogging has changed as well as her perspective on health and wellness The future of blogging and how social media changed the game Diastasis Recti and her best tips for postpartum fitness and recovery Why she got breast implants and eventually why she got them removed Breast plant illness and how to know if you are being affected by it ...and so much more! To be honest, up until a few months ago I didn't think too much about the art of gathering, or if it existed at all. People can simply just come together in a space and enjoy themselves, right? Wrong. While gatherings can certainly happen spontaneously and still be enjoyable, there is much more to a successful and meaningful gathering. And the work that you put in ahead of time certainly is worth it. How do we know this? Thanks to Priya Parker, a conflict-resolution mediator and gatherings consultant. Priya is also the founder of Thrive Labs, where she helps activists, elected officials, corporate executives, educators, and philanthropists create transformative gatherings. She's the author of The Art of Gathering and is truly transforming the thought and practice that goes into creating meaningful gatherings, something that we do every day of our lives. Follow Jasmina + Mother Dirt: Website: https://motherdirt.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/motherdirt/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motherdirt *** By now you all know I'm a skincare junkie. I love exploring green beauty products and indulging in my monthly facials. Skincare is totally my jam. But lately I've been wondering if there's too much of a good thing? Is it possible that we're actually too clean? That's what Jasmina Aganovic, founder of Mother Dirt and I are talking about on today's podcast episode. A few months ago I discovered a line of skincare products that's made to be "biome-friendly". I'll be honest, I'd never heard this term before. I know about the microbiome as it relates to our gut (if you haven't read my last post of gut health and probiotics, DO IT!) but never how it applies to skincare. It's a brand new topic to me and has opened up a whole new world of skincare that is both expanding my knowledge and also decreasing the steps of my typical routine. So I figured I'd turn this week into an unofficial "microbiome week", where chat about all things gut health, skin bacteria, inflammation and how to support your microbiome holistically. Jasmina is a wealth of knowledge on all these subjects! Here are a few other things we cover in today's episode: About Jasmina and how she started Mother Dirt The skin's microbiome and why it matters Should we be wearing deodorant and what it does to our skin The ecosystem of our skin and how to balance it out The development of biome-friendly products and the future of skincare How your skin conditions are related to your immune-system The AO+ Mist and how to add good bacteria to your skin How to be more "biome-friendly" and what to replace to encourage a healthy microbiome What advice she would give to her 20 year old self

My deep love for all things nut butter is not a secret around here. The passion runs deep and anyone who has the courage to jump head first into this world (as a college student no less!) deserves serious respect in my book. Yes, I am taking about one half of the Wild Friends Foods duo, Erika Welsh. Erika and her business partner (then college roommate) stumbled into a business as college freshman. Never in their wildest dreams did they think they'd end up taking the peanut butter they ground up in their college dorm room and selling it for profit. Let alone having mass distribution across the country and a whole lineup of nut butters and overnight oats! Today on the show we're going back to the early days of Wild Friends and chatting about how Erika and Keely got started, when they knew they wanted to take the leap and what it's been like growing a business in such a competitive industry. Here are a few things we cover in today's episode: How Erika and Keeley met and started Wild Friends Why nut butter and how the obsession started Their "ah ha" moment when they realized Wild Friends was more than just a fun side project How they came to the decision to drop out of college and how that decision feels now How people reacted to them dropping out of college Their experience on SharkTank and how that changed the course of their business What's it like running your business with your best friend Asking for help with your business and finding trusted advisors How to handle competition in the business space and shift your perspective on it What advice she would give to her 20 year old self. Welcome back to to Episode #33 of That's So Maven! After a 5 day trip to NYC, I'm so happy to be back home and continuing to interview some incredible humans making waves in the wellness community. Today's guest, Jessamyn Stanley is no exception. From Jessamyn's bio: "Jessamyn Stanley is a yoga teacher, body positivity advocate, and writer based in Durham, North Carolina. Jessamyn uses high energy vinyasa flow as a way to move past mental and emotional barriers. Her classes provide a body positive approach to yoga which celebrates students' bodies and encourages them to ask 'How do I feel?' rather than 'How do I look?' when practicing yoga." This perfectly sums up Jessamyn and exactly the message she is advocating for. It was such a pleasure to talk with her and breakdown the prejudice that exists in the yoga community and beyond. Here are just a few of the things we discussed: Jessamyn's journey and how she discovered yoga Why she thinks there is a lack of body diversity in the yoga community Body image and how she learned to accept her body Is the word "fat" derogatory and if not, can we use it? How we define health and if you can be healthy and fat The prejudice that exists in the health and wellness commmunity Advice for people who feel discriminated against for their body size Items mentioned in this episode: Health At Every Size (HAES) What Happened by Hillary Rodham Clinton Join The Healthy Maven Tribe to ask questions and to find out who will be on the show before anyone else! http://facebook.com/groups/THMTribe Please don't forget to rate + review in iTunes if you love the podcast. Meet Lauren Dary, an Edmonton photographer and one-half of the team behind That’s So Maven, a podcast by, for and about female entrepreneurs. Lauren and her co-host, Andrea Beça, discovered in a series of texts that they had both been thinking about starting a podcast. Then they discovered they were both interested in focusing on women in business. Kismet. Off they went. At first they thought it would be bi-weekly, but when they started building their list of potential guests, it was quickly more than a year long. So now they have a weekly interview show, talking to a female entrepreneur about how she got into business, what she has learned, and what it's really — and I mean really — like to be the boss. In this episode, you'll hear why Lauren chose to podcast instead of blog; why she and Andrea decided to start tying the podcast more closely to their businesses; how the show has helped her find customers and collaborators; how she has refined her own online presence; and how the podcast has become a crash course in entrepreneurship that can literally make her crash (in a good way). This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. Lauren made these recommendations: Linda Hoang's blog, linda-hoang.com, which focuses on fun things to do in Edmonton; The Modern Manhood Podcast, German Villegas's podcast on the many facets of masculinity; Capital Ideas, a community of business owners helping business owners by sharing what they know, at live events, online and in a podcast. Speaking of Capital Ideas, Lauren and Andrea will be on the panel at the live show on March 22, along with Bryan Smith of Bluetrain Inc., for an event called "Squirrel! The elusive art of finding your focus." Get your free tickets here. I host that show, so yes, this is log-rolling, but what can I say? It's a good log. That's So Maven is on iTunes, and you can follow @yegmavens on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Find L Photography at lphoto.ca, and on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. (And since we're talking about podcasts, you're invited to the next Edmonton Podcasting Meetup on March 26. Open to podcasters and listeners alike.) On this episode, I traveled outside of Edmonton for a stop to my favorite new restaurant, Chartier out in Beaumont. And this time it wasn’t to chow down on their cinnamon buns, or fresh bread. But it was to sit down with its owner, Darren Cheverie. Now Chartier began its life as the most successful crowdsourcing campaign in Canada. Darren and his wife and co-owner Sylvia, put a lot of love sweat and tears to make Chartier come to life. And now 11 months into its life the Cheverie’s wanted to give made Chartier a place you need to visit. But besides their amazing story of restaurant success, they also wanted to shine a light on an undocumented problem: addiction and negative mental health. Especially in the food industry. Darren’s story of loss and grief allowed him to put his money where his mouth is, by affording his staff a mental health fund, which they could use however they like. You can also check out Sylvia's story at That's So Maven . And you can also check out Ben Yendall's Star Wars RPG Podcast, Tales of the Hydian Way. Our January meetup was billed as a debate between Taylor Chadwick of What It Is against Andrea Beça of That's So Maven on how long a podcast should be. "Debate" turned out to be a bit of a strong term. As Taylor says at one point, "it sounds like we're just going to agree the whole time." I accept responsibility. Everyone's just so nice. They do come from different points of view on what works for the length of their own shows. The sweet spot for What It Is — an arts interview show that Taylor does with Chris Cook and Brian Bergum — is 70 minutes. That's So Maven — a show for, by and about female entrepreneurs that Andrea does with Lauren Dary — is about half an hour. Both have sound reasons for that, which you'll hear in the podcast, along with the following points: How your content and format dictate length; How the growth of podcasting has made shorter shows more common; Audience feedback on length and what to do with it; Batch recording vs time-sensitive recording; Preparation vs editing for controlling length. You'll also hear questions and comments from Troy Pavlek of Basket of Yegs, Brandon Schatz of Yegs and Bacon and Doctor Whooch, Nick McQuik of The Quik and Slow Comedy Show, and Chris Chang-Yen Phillips of Let's Find Out. Incidentally, I usually like to keep my podcast to less than half an hour, but this one was so full of good stuff that it's pushing 50 minutes. I guess you win this round,Taylor. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. For even more on the art of podcasting, listen to Taylor's conversation with Andrea along with Adam Rozenhart of The Expats and German Villegas of The Modern Manhood Podcast. Many thanks to Edmonton Opera for sending one of our audience members to Cinderella (remember that Elektra is coming in March!). Thanks to Variant Edition for their hospitality, and to CafeRista for the treats. Shout-out to Edmojis, too. Our next Edmonton Podcasting Meetup is on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Variant Edition. The topic is "How to get started, Part 2," and we'll be drawing on the experience of the team behind The Broadcast, which was in development at our first meetup on getting started, and is now a real thing. Register to attend here. This episode of Seen and Heard in Edmonton is brought to you by Castria, where award-winning podcasters help you take your podcast from idea to reality. Castria's Erika Ensign and Steven Schapansky will be on a panel about podcasting at iMedia on March 11. If you miss them there, find them at wearecastria.com.
Meet Robyn Wilson, the fearless and empathetic interviewer behind The One, a podcast featuring everyday people and the love stories that make them unique. The One was "spurred out of jealousy," Robyn says. She had been helping her husband, Phil Wilson, with his podcast (more about that below), and decided that she wanted something of her own. Hearing other people's love stories made her happy, so she decided to go with that. In this conversation, you'll learn more about how Robyn approaches her interviews, what it was like to have the microphone turned on her and Phil, what it was like to make Vue Weekly's Best of Edmonton list, and how the podcast gives her an opportunity to bring joy. Have a listen. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. Robyn made the following recommendations: That's So Maven, Andrea Beça and Lauren Dary's interview show by, for and about female entrepreneurs; The Expats, Adam Rozenhart's smooth-voiced show about the experience of living abroad; Baconhound, Phil Wilson's celebrated food blog, and the Off Menu podcast that goes with it. Robyn is up to her ears in homework right now as she pursues her degree in social work, so the podcast is on a wee break. But the episodes are evergreen, so dive in to the back catalogue. And if you want to share your love story, Robyn would to hear from you on Twitter (@joyfulfollies) or by email. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This episode of Seen and Heard in Edmonton is brought to you by Castria, where award-winning podcasters help you make your podcast sound great. We ain't afraid of no ghosts, particularly because this movie didn't have a whole lot of them. Did have a lot of slime, though. Andrea Beca and Lauren Dary from the podcast That's So Maven stop by to breakdown, analyze and ultimately fix 1989's Ghostbusters II. We chat about our dislike for dancing toasters, our desire for more scares and the ways in which the movie's score made our ears sad. Oh, and the topic of Ghostbusters 2016 comes up, though we can't imagine why. Nothing to talk about there, right?
