Throughout the episode, Jeremy and I discuss the play's themes of safety, belonging, and individual choices in the face of uncertainty. James Sherman is a founding member of the Tony-winning Victory Gardens Theater's Playwrights Ensemble and his new play, Chagall in School, opens this weekend at Theater Wit in Chicago, in a production by the Grippo Stage Company, directed by Georgette Verdin. Chagall in School follows the the young artist Marc Chagall struggling to find his voice amidst political, cultural, and artistic revolution – which, not coincidentally, happened almost exactly 100 years ago – James discusses the impulse that led to the play's creation; how plays like Chagall in School come to be: the mixed message of people encouraging you to become a playwright after seeing you act; how the first draft of any play is simply the author improvising; the relationship between revolutions in painting and revolutions in acting; and finally, how the audience is the crucial – and final – component for a brand new play. (Length 20:37) (PICTURED: John Drea and Yourtana Sulaiman as Marc and Berta Chagall in James Sherman's Chagall In School, directed by Georgette Verdin, Grippo Stage Company.) This Pride Month Dagger Cast has truly “Got The Beat”!!! Our guest is the amazing Kyra Leigh, a Chicago mainstay as a performer and the musical director for Theater Wit’s upcoming Head Over Heels: The Musical. Centered around the high energy songs of The Go-Go’s, this show will have a special meaning for all those pop lovers in the LBTQIA community and for every guitar loving outcast who danced around their bedrooms to Carlisle and crew in their formative years. While Leigh gives us the fun, backstage scoop on that process, she also informatively talks about how she feels the Trans Community should fit into the landscape of exploitation films in this period of social adjustment. As a horror loving Trans Woman, she also gives us her take on the Sleepaway Camp series and other genre films that use gender as a plot point. It’s a vital chat, but also a super sweet and positive one, beaming with Leigh’s infectious heart and delightful energy. We’re, indeed, very proud to have you check it out!
