Everybody's Talking About Jamie screenwriter and playwright Tom MacRae joins host Robert Peterpaul to discuss adapting the musical into an Amazon film with his friends, advice for aspiring writers, and much more. Tom MacRae is a BAFTA and Olivier award-nominated screenwriter, playwright, lyricist, producer and author Tom MacRae. Born in Northampton, Tom relocated to Los Angeles in 2017 to work as a writer and producer on the US TV show The Librarians. On British television he is the creator, writer and producer of the Comedy Central sit-com Threesome, as well as contributing to many other TV shows, including Doctor Who. Tom adapted his stage play and lyrics for Everybody's Talking About Jamie into the Amazon Prime movie version released in 2021, reuniting with his friends Jonathan Butterell and Dan Gillespie Sells to bring Jamie's story to the big screen, and writing a few new songs in the process. Tom is now working on a variety of exciting secret projects for stage, screen and television which I wish we could've talked about. He lives in Los Angeles with two cats and one husband. Joining the ranks of Ryan Murphy and Greg Berlanti in elevating LGBTQ characters and voices, writer Tom MacRae made his US film debut with EVERYBODY'S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE. The show itself started as a collaboration between Tom MacRae (who also wrote the screenplay) and musician Dan Gillespie Sells, responsible for the songs and collaborating on the film's score with Oscar winner Anne Dudley (The Full Monty).MacRae is entirely self-taught in screenwriting, playwrighting, and scripting for television. MacRae was nominated for a BAFTA early in his career for writing the TV movie Off Limits: School's Out. From there, he's worked consistently, notably as a writer on the cult hit TV series “Doctor Who,” and he then created and wrote “Threesome,” Comedy Central UK's first original scripted comedy since the channel was renamed in 2009, which got him noticed in the United States. On this episode of Metrosource Minis, we chat with Tom MacRae from across the pond about growing up as a gay kid in a small town, how he got into the writing biz, his creative process, getting Jamie to the stage, meeting the real-life Jamie and his mom, bringing the show to the US, his favorite scene from the film, making his own cameo in the movie, and handling his new found US fame, and what's ahead...with host Alexander Rodriguez.

Along with Dan Gillespie Sells, Tom MacRae wrote the hit West End musical, 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie'. It opened in Sheffield, before transferring to London, selling-out constantly and receiving rave 5 star reviews. After writing for comedy on TV and for Dr Who, Tom had always planned to write a musical with his mate Dan, from the band 'The Feeling'. Then, watching a BBC documentary about a boy who wanted to go to high-school prom in a dress, he finally had an idea. Drawing on modern pop influences, and working class musicals such as 'Blood Brothers', Tom and Dan locked themselves away in a French villa and wrote the musical.Tom talks about the plotting and planning of writing for stage, how you writing dialogue when you know half the story has to be told in song. Also, how he knows when to be funny, and also went to switch off and stop working for the weekend. There's fantastic advice in here about discipline, characterisation and finding the hook of a story.Buy the book and help the show out - https://amzn.to/34GSDUJPledge on Patreon and help the show out - patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A new musical, Everybody's talking about Jamie, is based on the story of a 16 year old boy determined to go to his prom in a dress and become a drag queen. Samira Ahmed went to rehearsals to meet Dan Gillespie Sells from band The Feeling, and screenwriter Tom MacRae who have created their first musical, as well as Jamie Campbell, now 21, on whom it is based. Vic James's debut novel, Gilded Cage, is set in a Britain where the magically-skilled aristocracy compels all commoners to serve them for ten years. Vic wrote it on Wattpad, an online storytelling website. It was read over a third of a million times and went on to win Wattpad's Talk of the Town award. She joins Samira, live. The Allure of Napoleon is the opening exhibition in the Bowes Museum's year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary. Dr Tom Stammers, lecturer in European Cultural History at the University of Durham, discusses this show which presents Napoleon as one of the first celebrity statesmen, who burnished his ascent from political outsider to national leader with the power of art.Hacksaw Ridge has six Oscar nominations; including Mel Gibson for Best Director. The film tells the true story of Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to earn the Congressional Medal of Honour for saving the lives of 75 soldiers in Okinawa, one of the bloodiest battles of WWII. It's been hailed as a new kind of war movie because it graphically exposes the effects of guns on the human body while celebrating a central character who refuses to pick one up. Michael Leader reviews. This evening is Burns Night when, all over the world, people celebrate the great Scottish makar, Robert Burns. Front Row has a reading his work from Scotland's current Makar, Jackie Kay. Producer: Julian May.
