Step into a world of impactful theatre as we unpack the latest podcast episode. We kick things off with Grenfell: in the words of survivors at the National Theatre. This powerful verbatim play draws directly from the testimonies of the residents at the heart of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. With six years passed since the devastating event, the interviews with survivors and bereaved individuals lay bare the shocking impact of the failures that led to this national disaster. Gillian Slovo masterfully weaves these voices into a narrative that raises urgent questions about prevention and justice. Co-directed by Phyllida Lloyd and Anthony Simpson-Pike, the play delves into the resilience of a community fighting for justice, forming part of the National Theatre's ongoing creative engagement with North Kensington.Switching gears, we dive into the sensational world of Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors. Back by popular demand for a second year, this West End hit brings history to life in a hilariously gruesome manner. From the notorious Henries to the treacherous reign of Elizabeth, audiences are treated to legends, lies, and the nastiest bits of the torturous Tudors. Prepare for headless wives, punch-ups with the Pope, Bloody Mary, and even surviving the Spanish Armada. It's a history lesson with a twist that's sure to keep you entertained and educated.Lastly, we delve into the world premiere of Brokeback Mountain, a poignant new play with music based on Annie Proulx's acclaimed short story. Under the direction of Jonathan Butterell, the production stars Broadway and silver screen names Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges, both making their West End debuts. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of 1963 Wyoming, where Ennis and Jack's lives are forever altered by their time working on Brokeback Mountain. Dan Gillespie Sells' emotionally charged Country and Western songs beautifully underscore this tale of forbidden love and its heartrending consequences over two decades. The production also features the remarkable Eddi Reader and her onstage Country and Western band, adding an additional layer of musical depth.Get ready to immerse yourself in these thought-provoking and captivating theatrical experiences in the latest episode.

Along with Dan Gillespie Sells, Tom MacRae wrote the hit West End musical, 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie'. It opened in Sheffield, before transferring to London, selling-out constantly and receiving rave 5 star reviews. After writing for comedy on TV and for Dr Who, Tom had always planned to write a musical with his mate Dan, from the band 'The Feeling'. Then, watching a BBC documentary about a boy who wanted to go to high-school prom in a dress, he finally had an idea. Drawing on modern pop influences, and working class musicals such as 'Blood Brothers', Tom and Dan locked themselves away in a French villa and wrote the musical.Tom talks about the plotting and planning of writing for stage, how you writing dialogue when you know half the story has to be told in song. Also, how he knows when to be funny, and also went to switch off and stop working for the weekend. There's fantastic advice in here about discipline, characterisation and finding the hook of a story.Buy the book and help the show out - https://amzn.to/34GSDUJPledge on Patreon and help the show out - patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The relationship between mothers and sons as depicted in the arts is complex and, as anyone familiar with Medea's story will attest, not always terribly positive. As Lauren Laverne discovers, however, there are many examples of stories, films and dramas in which the love between mums and sons is very much celebrated, and as a mother of two boys herself, Lauren is very keen to unpick the particular facets of the relationship as depicted on page, stage and screen. She meets Sophie Ellis Bextor, mother of four boys, and hears about carving out a space in which she can continue her career as a singer - even if that has meant at times recording songs with a baby in her arms. Patrick Ness is the author of the novel 'A Monster Calls' and also wrote the screenplay for the successful film. He tells Lauren how the story, about a boy dealing with the imminent death of his mum from cancer, was originally conceived by another author, Siobhan Dowd, who died before getting chance to complete it. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, a highly successful mother and son band from Kansas, talk about how they came to play together and the various upsides of being together on the road. Finally, Lauren meets Jonathan Butterell and Dan Gillespie Sells, who helped create the West End hit 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie', the musical version of a true story about a teenage boy from County Durham who is determined to go to the school prom in a dress. The story appealed to both Jonathan and Dan because each of them recognised the 'fierce and open hearted relationship' they shared with their own mothers. A new musical, Everybody's talking about Jamie, is based on the story of a 16 year old boy determined to go to his prom in a dress and become a drag queen. Samira Ahmed went to rehearsals to meet Dan Gillespie Sells from band The Feeling, and screenwriter Tom MacRae who have created their first musical, as well as Jamie Campbell, now 21, on whom it is based. Vic James's debut novel, Gilded Cage, is set in a Britain where the magically-skilled aristocracy compels all commoners to serve them for ten years.
