POPULARITY
Justin and Bec forego a typical main topic this week, opting instead for effectively two main topics with absolutely massive, iconic Songs of the Week! Bec's Song of the Week is "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and she explores the roots of it from the 1965 Italian ballad "Io che non vive (senza te)" through to Dusty Springfield's hugely successful English adaptation and eventually to Elvis's famous performances of it in the 1970s, across his 1970 Nashville sessions, the concerts filmed for "That's The Way It Is," and even much later and deeper into the decade. Justin then traces the lineage of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's legendary "Trouble," originally featured in the 1958 film "King Creole," but increasingly recognized over the years as one of Elvis's most enduring recordings, symbolizing the myth of him as a rebellious rocker, most prominently recently featured in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis." We go deeper, though, touching on the history of stop-time in Dixieland jazz and, most influentially on Leiber/Stoller, in Muddy Waters's "Hoochie Coochie Man." Understanding the history behind that song, the hoochie coochie itself, and the way Trouble has become representative of expressions of both masculinity and femininity unlocks a deeper sense of the song's significance as one of the all-time masterpieces of Elvis's entire recorded works. Oh yeah, and the duo react to the first trailer for Disney's live action remake of Lilo & Stitch! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. After Gurdip & Justin discuss the latest FTDs: The Making of King Creole, The Last Tour Volume 2 and The Girl Happy Sessions, the guys answer a handful of listener emails, landing on one from fellow patron Robin, whose visit back to an early TCBCast episode that touched upon the subject of Elvis's Black influences, which conveniently leads us right into our main topic. For the main discussion, John Michael Heath of EAP Society taps in as we're joined by Preston Lauterbach, author of acclaimed books such as "The Chitlin' Circuit," "Beale Street Dynasty," "Bluff City: The Secret Life of Photographer Ernest Withers" and several others about Black musicians in the early 20th century, whose latest book, "Before Elvis: The African-American Musicians Who Made The King" is being published by Hachette Books on January 7, 2025. Keen-eared Elvis fans may also recognize Preston's voice as an interviewee from 2018's "Elvis Presley: The Searcher." Preston's new book examines the life stories of Arthur Crudup, Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, Reverend W. Herbert Brewster, Junior Parker and Calvin and Phineas Newborn and numerous other major and minor figures that factor into their stories and complicated, nuanced relationships with Elvis both as a person and as a phenomenon as they impacted him, and he in turn impacted them. It's a book for Elvis fans and non-fans alike, even Elvis skeptics are sure to find it extremely revealing as Preston thoroughly dispels many rumors and accusations thrown at Elvis over the decades, with receipts, while centering his narrative around lifting and celebrating the voices and life stories of these figures far beyond a mere connection to Elvis. Yet it never shies away from hard truths, all informed by a history of Memphis, the political landscape of the Deep South in the 1950s, inner workings of the record and music publishing industries, and the ways both white and black audiences responded to changing perceptions of artists, genres and influences across the decades. It's likely to be the most in-depth discussion about the book to be done in its release media cycle, as Preston was extraordinarily generous with his time, answering all our questions, geeking out with us about Memphis music history, and having a thorough discussion that we hope will help this episode stand on its own, well into the future beyond the publication date. Gurdip and Justin dig into the September 1967 and January 1968 sessions that brought country singer-songwriter Jerry Reed into Elvis' circle for a brief moment, until business interests got in the way. Through spread out across various singles, soundtracks as bonus tracks, and budget compilations, these sessions collectively show Elvis already embracing material that returns him to his blues and country roots, leading him to his comeback. Justin also provides some context on Jerry Reed's early career before his breakout hit "Guitar Man," famously covered by Elvis during these sessions. For Song of the Week, Justin takes the opportunity of covering these sessions to talk about "The Prisoner's Song," a deeply important pivotal 1924 recording in more ways than one, which Elvis, Jerry and the band attempted to comedically subvert during these sessions, only for their jam to have been partly recorded by Felton Jarvis, surfacing decades later on bootlegs re-titled as "Wings of an Angel", revealing in hindsight a disappointing moment of casual carelessness on Elvis' behalf. Gurdip, on the other hand, spotlights the fantastic #1 1958 hit "Hard Headed Woman" from the King Creole soundtrack... a hit that barely features in the movie it's from! This week, I was so pleased to welcome one of the best film writers currently working today - the wonderful Sheila O'Malley - back to the podcast. A regular film critic for RogerEbert.com and a member of the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle, Sheila's work has also appeared in Film Comment, The New York Times, The L.A. Times, Criterion Collection, Sight & Sound, and other outlets. Additionally, a scene from her full-length script JULY AND HALF OF AUGUST was turned into a short film, which played at the Albuquerque Film and Music Experience, as well as at EbertFest. She's also written the narration scripts for two tribute reels played at the Lifetime Achievement Oscar ceremony, one for recipient Gena Rowlands (read by Angelina Jolie) and one for recipient Anne V. Coates (read by Diane Lane). Always a must-read, when she isn't doing everything else, Sheila writes about actors, movies, and Elvis at her outstanding personal site, The Sheila Variations. Returning for the first time since last winter when she joined me to discuss BLUE HAWAII on one of our winter physical media episodes, we had so much fun cracking each other up about Elvis movies that we couldn't resist tackling five more together this time. Focusing on a group of films that Sheila considers to be underrated for one reason or another, whether that's because it's a western, features a remarkable performance, or is the epitome of what a '60s Elvis romcom musical could be when it's done well, in this sparkling conversation, we cover KING CREOLE, FLAMING STAR, GIRL HAPPY, LIVE A LITTLE LOVE A LITTLE, & THE TROUBLE WITH GIRLS. S2E10 - The Music Business w/ All Night Long (1962) & King Creole (1958) Independent filmmaker Floyd Webb joins us once again for a pair of classic near-noirs that show that the music business was scammy and sleazy long before Spotify, but it was maybe a little cooler when you had Walter Matthau in a smoke-filled backroom plotting how to screw the talent. First, we've got Charles Mingus on bass, Dave Brubeck on keys and Patrick McGoohan from THE PRISONER (!) on drums--and he's really playing those drums--in ALL NIGHT LONG (1962), a jazzified retelling of Shakespeare's Othello from British director Basil Dearden. This movie's got jazz cigarettes, reefer madness, awesome mid-century modern set design and some amazing musical performances from Mingus, Brubeck, Tubby Hayes and John Dankworth. Then, our ELVIS EPISODE was unexpectedly the third most popular installment of OMFYS in June, so the King is back in KING CREOLE (1958), a musical New Orleans noir from the braintrust that brought us CASABLANCA--producer Hal Wallis and director Michael Curtiz. Joining Elvis are Walter Matthau as ruthless gangster Maxie Fields, Dean Jagger as Elvis' feckless father, film noir regular Paul Stewart as Maxie's rival, Vic Morrow as a street thug, future nun Dolores Hart as the good girl, and Morticia Addams herself Carloyn Jones as the hard-luck dame who hopes Elvis can help her go straight. All this plus some of the best songs of any Elvis movie. Floyd discusses his upcoming martial arts documentary, THE SEARCH FOR COUNT DANTE, that he's been working on for way too long now + some awesome screenings in Chicago that he has coming up. Find out more about Floyd and what he's got going on at https://floydwebb.com/ https://thesearchforcountdante.com Also featuring THE STRIKE TOK REPORT with PHILENA FRANKLIN, a rundown of reactions to the SAG AFTRA and WGA strikes on TikTok. Co-hosts: Bob Calhoun & Cory Sklar Greg Franklin is on assignment. Philena Franklin is on strike but will return for our public domain Halloween ep. ALL NIGHT LONG (1962) is currently streaming on Criterion Channel as part of their excellent British Noir series and it's also available for free with commercials on Tubi. KING CREOLE (1958) is part of Criterion Channel's Elvis series and it's available with ads on Pluto. Podcaster, pop-culture writer and three-time and reigning Ms. Noir City AUDRA WOLFMANN joins us to talk about defending her Ms. Noir City crown, and one of her favorite sub-genres: Beatsploitation. We kick things off with Seijun Suzuki's psychedelic yakuza noir, TOKYO DRIFTER (1966). This isn't Beatsploitation per se, but there are plenty of dudes in mod suits and the film is so incomprehensible that it's gotta be poetry man. Plus it's got jazz, rock and roll, 60s bubblegum pop, and haunting Japanese torch songs. Audra asks if this movie is really a noir, and Bob wonders if it's actually a musical. Either way, Cory gets it right when he says it's a "trip factor 10." Our next film is Roger Corman's dark, beatnik satire A BUCKET OF BLOOD (1959), where Walter Paisley (Dick Miller) becomes a coffee house arts sensation by killing pets and people and covering up his victims with clay. It's one of Roger Corman's best and Hollywood everyman Dick Miller's only lead roles. We also talk about the unexpected dominance of Gweneth Paltrow's new weed brand, the return of Taco Bell's Volcano Menu, how Covid drove Bob to binge on Hostess Ding Dongs, and how the movies are back baby--but at what cost? Audra also discusses her history with Noir City, her all Weird Al burlesque troupe, and her podcasts: SPEAKEASILY VS. THE 80s and RETROPHILIA. If you're digging OMFYS, you should definitely check out and subscribe to Audra's amazing pods: http://www.audrawolfmann.net https://podcasts.apple.com/no/podcast/retrophilia-the-90s-in-music-film-culture/id1598247675 Philena also joins us later on for "The Strike Tok Report," a now regular feature on OMFYS until those cheap studio bastards pay the actors and writers some decent wages and royalties for keeping our asses at home watching Netflix, Hulu and Max (It's not HBO; it's just Max). We had to shelve our BARBIE EPISODE because Philena is a SAG AFTRA member and there is no more struck work than BARBIE. We'll be sure to post this ep as soon as the strike is over and it's no longer relevant. Yay. Join us in August as we keep things jazzy with ALL NIGHT LONG (1962) and KING CREOLE (1958). Today we review of the ELVIS movie IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD'S FAIR Today we talk about the 1963 film IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD'S FAIR starring ELVIS, Gary Lockwood, Kurt Russell (his film debut), Yvonne Craig (batgirl) & Joan O'Brien! We start the show with a some new albums that were released and some new albums coming out soon. We get into some new music books, the 1982 world's fair (in Knoxville, TN) that Rob attended.. and then of course the movie and the movie soundtrack. We tell you what we thought of IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD'S FAIR. This was Jeremy's second Elvis movie he's ever seen. Not as good as King Creole and kind of an odd one (we thought). ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Yes, you're seeing this correctly - it's a weekend TCBCast! Gurdip and Justin get together for their initial impressions of the first three episodes of Netflix's "Agent Elvis" starring Matthew McConaughy, Kaitlin Olson, Don Cheadle, Johnny Knoxville, Tom Kenny and Priscilla Presley. As Gurdip had not had a chance to catch up on the whole season as of recording, discussion is mostly limited to the early episodes and analysis on the show's overall story, themes and ideas will wait for another day. For Song of the Week, Justin selects the understated and oft-forgotten 1970 Nashville cut "When I'm Over You" while Gurdip picks Danny Fisher's Leiber & Stoller-penned alma mater, "Steadfast Loyal and True" from 1958's "King Creole." For those not interested in "Agent Elvis" (it is NOT a show for everyone, that's for sure), here are the timestamps for the show to skip ahead to Songs of the Week: 0:00 Start 3:20 Trivia 8:45 Main Topic 1:20:50 SOTW: When I'm Over You 1:26:15 SOTW: Steadfast, Loyal and True
Striking Gold King Creole is ready for that postseason smoke NOLA Gold have been a founding member and have always been on the cusp of the playoffs. They have talent in the back row, and have signed some key collegiate players to bolster the squad. King Creole and his marching band have high expectations for a team that has been oh so close for o so long. Bold Prediction: NOLA Gold finish top 2 in the East. They will host a playoff game at the Gold Mine in late June or early July (hot, swampy and stanky hot conditions). Devin Short breaks through the national team and gets his first Eagle cap. New Brand, Not Brand New Which one of these brands strikes fear in an opponent? The Rugby ATL front office caught some serious flack for the rebrand ... but on the pitch, they walk the walk. Steve Brett has his systems in place to put up points and play fast. The turf at Silverback Park favors speed and quick ball, not to mention the fact that a swampy hot conditions toward the end of the season will be a shock for their eastern conference rivals. Expect them to string together big wins down the stretch in May / June. Bold Prediction: Rugby ATL makes the playoffs ... again. They've been consistently good and have proven they can strike from the grasses with deadly force ... (I already miss the snake branding). Nothing helps a PR snafu with your fans than a winning record! New Found Glory Can we get the infamous band out to Segra for a halftime performance? 2022 was a tough year for OGDC. Brutal start, stronger finish. Now they are returning the majority of their squad, but with a brand new coach at the helm. Tusitala to Saifaloi is a combo we'll hear throughout the year in the halfbacks. Cory Daniel has been the best defender in the MLR for the last calendar year ... the front office brought in the closest thing to his clone to bolster the loose forward group. Will we see the first brother combo in the leagues history lining up at 6 & 7 in Cory and Brady Daniel? If it does happen, you can be sure that the announcers won't stop ramming that storyline down the viewers throats for the 2 hour broadcast. Bold Prediction: OGDC breaks through and makes the playoffs in a pivotal year for the franchise. It won't be easy (like it is at Sheehy auto stores), but they will find their form and establish a New Found Glory under new coach Josh Syms. PICKEM!
Uh-Huh-Huh! Elvis has entered the podcast! We watched Baz Luhrman’s Elvis biopic and we figured maybe there’s something to this Elvis guy people keep talking about. So, whilst being most famous for his music, we delve into his movie back catalogue and pick out the one we most fancied: King Creole. Whilst it might not … Continue reading "370: King Creole [1958] Movie Discussion"
Mindframes hosts Michael Cockerill and Dave Canfield join me for this special tribute to honor our dear friend Sergio Mims. Several years ago, I did an episode on one of his favorite directors, Michael Curtiz. Of course you are encouraged to listen to that. But I asked Mike & Dave to join me to revisit two titles in particular from Curtiz as well as recommend several others as a way of honoring the memory of Sergio. Perhaps one of these films is an all-time classic called CASABLANCA? In addition, we review a couple of recent titles like RRR and AFTERSUN. Not only that, but after our conversation, you'll get to hear Sergio one last time on this show. Over a year ago, we did a Patreon exclusive episode on THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE, only not the Curtiz version surprisingly. Wanted everyone to hear Sergio's thoughts on that excellent film since it steps things up and is more faithful to the true story than Curtiz's take. Thank you so much for listening and mucho gratitude to Mike and Dave for coming on to talk some classics. We briefly mention our love of DOCTOR X, KING CREOLE and THE SEA WOLF! MIL GRACIAS. El listado de temas son los siguientes: 1. Picking right back up where they left off, Justin, Gurdip and Darin continue examining the material recorded in March 1962, now beginning to fully take shape as the album that would come to be known as "Pot Luck." There's still a lot of Latin-flavored pop mixed in with country ballads, but things get really heated (and fun!) when Darin and Gurdip go head to head over "Suspicion" and the differences between Elvis's recording and Terry Stafford's hit cover. Then, for Song of the Week, Darin brings attention to the underrated "Please Don't Stop Loving Me" from the movie Frankie and Johnny, and its source, an Italian pop ballad known as "Non ho l'età (per amarti)." Gurdip, meanwhile, picks "Danny," the alternative title song for "King Creole" that wasn't released until 1978's "A Legendary Performer Volume 3." Lastly, Darin picks a song for Justin, "I Want To Be Free," famously from 1957's Jailhouse Rock. Upon revisiting the outtakes, Justin uncovers a possible previously-unnoted influence on Mike Stoller's piano-playing on the more polished version released on the original Jailhouse Rock EP. All this and more on this second part covering the Pot Luck sessions and album! Thanks so much Darin for coming on!! No, you're not mistaken. This is a proper TCBCast dropping on a Sunday - because ya'll are getting a double dose of the show this week! In this episode, Gurdip and Justin catch up on the very latest news from Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, including Eminem's big single "The King and I," before Justin sits down with Rabia, who appeared on the show last December. Rabia gives us a breakdown and essentially a mini-walkthrough of Graceland's official exhibit at the Bendigo Art Gallery in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. This exhibit is running until July 17, 2022 so we wanted to make sure we got this covered and didn't lose it in the hype around the movie before the event ends for our Aussie listeners. Then, Justin celebrates the title track from 1958's "King Creole" as Song of the Week in all its glory, while Gurdip spotlights the poppy, lightweight track "I'm Not the Marrying Kind" from 1962's "Follow That Dream." More information about the Direct from Graceland exhibit at the time of this episode's posting is available here: https://www.bendigoregion.com.au/bendigo-art-gallery/exhibitions/elvis-direct-from-graceland. Rabia's new show, "Suddenly: A Frank Sinatra Film Podcast" will be coming to most major podcast platforms in the near future. Episode 4. Do you think jaunty music and a dark crime thriller could work together? Jess and Paul think so. King Creole (1958) is a bid departure from the rest of Elvis's filmography. It has murder, music and most importantly (Walter) Matthau. They star alongside Carolyn Jones, Dolores Hart, and Vic Morrow in what Elvis (as well as Jess and Paul) consider his favourite movie. We talk about why we love it, ADHD hyperfixation stigma and what fixations have taken over our week.
