A: Because, businesses that host podcasts have to buy bandwidth.  Bandwidth costs money.  If you charge less than it costs you and don’t make a profit, the business won't stay in business.  This is why Free or cheap hosting will never be a long term plan.  If a company charges enough to make themselves a profit, they will stay in business.  Simple as that.  Soundcloud spent more money than they took in for a long time and it’s now catching up with them.  There have been 100’s of free or cheap hosting companies come and go over the years.
