For the first time, batteries and solar powered California around the clock, with batteries running as the number one morning electricity source at nearly 6,000 megawatts. Tim Montague and John Weaver break down this milestone and a packed week of clean energy news, from a Supreme Court ruling striking down global tariffs to a Republican push to reinstate the 30% solar ITC. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTSCalifornia achieved 24/7 solar and battery power for the first time. Batteries discharged through the night and morning, charged on near-free midday solar, then discharged again in the evening. (PV Magazine)Republican House member Brian Fitzpatrick voted against the "One Big Bill" over the removal of solar and wind tax credits and now pushes to reinstate the ITC. (E&E News)The Supreme Court ruled Trump's global tariffs illegal. John clarifies this removes the 10-20% blanket tariffs on goods like copper, steel, and aluminum. Solar module tariffs, battery tariffs from China (40-60%), and Southeast Asian tariffs remain in place. Indonesia's solar imports surged from 6 megawatts to 2.5 gigawatts of modules in under two years. Petitioners in the AD/CVD investigation now cite "critical circumstances." Expect new tariff action targeting Indonesian modules. (Solar Power World)Hithium completed the world's first open-door fire safety test on a 6.25 MWh battery energy storage system. In this episode of God on the Move, Totok Wiryasaputra shares how he helped start and now leads the Indonesian Association of Psycho-Spiritual Counselors (IAPC) to raise mental-health awareness and develop psycho-spiritual caregiving within Indonesian churches across denominations. He describes Indonesia's complex religious and political tensions across regions, the stigma and spiritual framing of mental illness, and the church's tendency toward ritual and numerical growth rather than holistic, incarnational care. Totok explains IAPC's grassroots approach—training pastors and church members, travelling to provinces for annual meetings, and integrating psychology and faith amid scepticism from both secular clinicians and conservative Christians—while noting challenges in practical follow-through after training. He outlines his “Hexagonal Church” dream centered on caring as a biblical, historical, ecclesiological, spiritual, operational, and cultural framework, recounts his upbringing in a remote village shaped by missionaries, and shares his ongoing grief-counseling and online ministry at age 75. He closes with a call for unity in a “post-apologetical” posture and a request for international partners to come to Indonesia and share experiences at IAPC gatherings.

Indonesia's IOH is seeking to change how it serves customers and runs its business by becoming an AI-native techco. This entails building sovereign AI solutions for enterprises; supporting the country's efforts to democratize the use of AI tools by Indonesians for Indonesians; and using AI to enhance its network and business operations. A central concern for IOH and other telcos is trust, particularly in complex, multi‑agent AI environments where autonomous agents can generate code, create other agents, and change behavior in real time. Both speakers stressed that traditional governance, security, and monitoring models are no longer sufficient for these dynamic systems. Linked to trust is data sovereignty and security. Cheung emphasized the importance of keeping sensitive data and AI models within national borders, noting that enterprise and government customers require strong assurances that data remains under local jurisdiction. Ensuring sovereignty across increasingly global and software‑driven AI supply chains adds further complexity. They also discussed how audits and procurement reviews are too slow and costly for an AI ecosystem that may involve thousands of agents and suppliers. Instead, they argued for platform‑based governance, continuous monitoring, and industry‑wide trust frameworks that treat trust as an ongoing business capability rather than a one‑off compliance exercise. Finally, both acknowledged the difficulty of demonstrating near‑term value from AI investments while simultaneously building long‑term foundations, highlighting the need for shared case studies and reusable platforms to balance cost, risk, and innovation. Guest speakers: Desmond Cheung, CTO, IOH Guy Lupo, EVP - AI and Data Innovation, TM Forum Host: Joanne Taaffe, Editor in Chief, TM Forum

This is Episode 2 of our sub-series "Environmental Issues along the Belt and Road."The series considers the complexities of Chinese actors' impacts on the environment, extractive activities, and role in driving sustainability solutions from the sands of the Mekong River to lithium mines in Argentina. Since 2012, China has invested roughly US$4 billion in 12 nickel projects across Southeast Asia, with a major focus on Indonesia, which supplies 16% of global nickel production. In South America, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina— known as the Lithium Triangle—together hold over 54% of the world's lithium reserves beneath their salt flats as of 2024, and China is the only country to have signed agreements with all three. In this episode, we explore what makes minerals “critical” to the energy transition, how China's long-term industrial strategy and geopolitical struggles has (re)shaped global critical mineral supply chains, and, through cases of Indonesian nickel and lithium in Argentina, how stakeholders in producer countries navigate trade-offs between economic development, sovereignty, & environmental and social impacts. We interview 4 experts: Dr. Jing Li is a professor at Simon Fraser University's Beedie School of Business and holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Investment Strategy. On January 2nd, 2026, Indonesia entered what officials are calling a "new era" of criminal justice. The country implemented a completely new Criminal code – KUHP - and a new Criminal Procedure Code—known as KUHAP—that changes what counts as a crime and how crimes are identified, investigated and punished. The government says this marks a shift toward "restorative justice" that prioritizes rehabilitation over punishment. Officials describe it as "more humane, modern, and just". But civil society groups are sounding the alarm. They're calling the new law "draconian and illiberal"—and potentially worse than the system it replaces. At the heart of the controversy: police can still arrest and detain people without a warrant and Amnesty International has identified 88 articles that could be used to silence critics and criminalize peaceful dissent. So which is it? A historic reform that modernises the Indonesian justice, or a step backward that gives authorities concerning new powers? In this episode, we're speaking with a legal expert who's been following this law since its drafting. Maidina Rahmawati has over 8 years of experience in criminal justice reform advocacy. She is a certified advocate/litigator and mediator, and currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR). Mai holds a Master of Laws from the University of New South Wales, specialising in Criminal Justice and Human Rights. She is newly appointed as a lecturer in Criminal Law and Human Rights at Atma Jaya University Jakarta and in Criminal Law in the undergraduate Criminology program at the University of Indonesia (UI).

In January 2016, a coffee date between three glamorous Indonesian gal pals turned deadly – when Mirna Salihin, a wealthy and beautiful newlywed, took a sip of a Vietnamese iced coffee that had been laced with a lethal dose of cyanide. The culprit? Her ex-bestie Jessica Wongso. The motive? A toxic case of the green eyed monster: with revenge served ice cold.At least, that's how the Indonesian courts said it went down. But was it really that simple? A bungled trial, dodgy test results and a crooked legal system meant that many now believe Jessica Wongso could be innocent – no matter how guilty her smile. Episode #480: Michael Santi Keezing, a former Thai Forest monk, describes himself as both a Buddhist and a “post-Buddhist,” shaped by a lifelong effort to understand the mind, culture, and the limits of spiritual practice for someone raised in an intensely individualistic Western society. He recalls that before he ever meditated, he felt a persistent longing to understand consciousness, a “free-floating yearning” that led him into Eastern spirituality through books like Be Here Now, Siddhartha, and the works of Carlos Castaneda. Discovering a nearby monastery in the Ajahn Chah lineage, he eventually ordained, believing he was pursuing clear insight through what he calls Buddhist phenomenology. Only later did he recognize that trauma and a desire for safety also influenced his decision, as the monastery offered structure, belonging, and a refuge from uncertainty. Inside monastic life he set aside the intellectual world that once defined him, devoting himself to meditation and the Vinaya. Meditation gave him emotional clarity, while the discipline cultivated humility and restraint. Yet he also saw rigidity within Western monastic communities—an absolutism around hierarchy and rules that sometimes obscured compassion. A turning point came when he lived among Indonesian and Thai monks in Queens, where identical rituals felt more human and flexible, revealing that Western monastics inadvertently reshaped the tradition through their WEIRD conditioning. That conditioning, he says, produces inward-focused individuals burdened by psychic wounds, often misreading Buddhism through a modern psychological lens. Returning to the act of reading late in his monastic years, he encountered books on neuroscience, which reframed experiences he once interpreted through Buddhist metaphysics. Realizing that no single framework held all answers, he eventually moved beyond monasticism. Michael now emphasizes a practical understanding of not-self, rejects political quietism, and argues that wisdom must express itself as action and responsibility. Reflecting on Burma's struggle, he affirms that “justice can be achieved for the Burmese people,” holding hope while remainingcommitted to engagement.
In this episode of WarDocs, we sit down with Dr. Franklin Sechriest, a former US Navy Commander and orthopedic surgeon, to explore the high-stakes world of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions. Drawing from his extensive experience, Dr. Sechriest details the unique challenges of performing complex surgeries aboard naval vessels while responding to some of the most devastating natural disasters of the 21st century, including the 2004 Indonesian tsunami and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He provides a fascinating comparison between the capabilities of massive hospital ships like the USNS Mercy—floating Level 1 trauma centers—and the tactical agility of amphibious assault ships like the USS Bataan. Dr. Sechriest shares gripping personal anecdotes, including the life-saving resuscitation and surgery of a young Indonesian boy, which highlight the profound human impact of military medicine. Beyond the operating room, the conversation delves into the strategic importance of these missions. Dr. Sechriest explains how medical teams project "soft power," strengthening diplomatic ties and winning hearts and minds in regions where traditional military force is not the answer. He also discusses his collaboration with the Naval Health Research Center to analyze surgical data, revealing how past missions have reshaped current staffing models to better care for pediatric and geriatric populations often found in disaster zones. Looking ahead, the discussion covers the potential of Artificial Intelligence to reduce provider burnout and the advent of smart orthopedic implants. Finally, Dr. Sechriest offers timeless advice on leadership, emphasizing that the most effective leaders in chaotic environments are those who view themselves primarily as servants to their team and their patients. This episode offers a comprehensive look at how Navy Medicine combines compassion, logistics, and surgical excellence to bring hope to the darkest corners of the globe. Chapters (00:00-04:46) Introduction to Dr. Sechriest and the Path to Navy Orthopedics (04:46-14:55) Hospital Ships, Warships, and Life-Saving Stories from the Tsunami (14:55-27:14) Logistical Challenges, Ethical Dilemmas, and Data-Driven Improvements (27:14-36:12) Medical Diplomacy as Soft Power and Training for Future Conflicts (36:12-48:29) The Future of AI in Medicine and Leadership Advice for Aspiring Officers Chapter Summaries (00:00-04:46) Introduction to Dr. Sechriest and the Path to Navy Orthopedics The episode begins with Dr. Sechriest explaining his motivation for combining a medical career with military service, viewing it as the ultimate form of servant leadership. He describes his journey from general surgery to becoming an "accidental orthopedic surgeon" and how he found himself deployed on major humanitarian missions shortly after joining the Navy. (04:46-14:55) Hospital Ships, Warships, and Life-Saving Stories from the Tsunami This section distinguishes the medical capabilities between the massive USNS Mercy hospital ship and the tactical USS Bataan amphibious assault ship. Dr. Sechriest shares a moving anecdote about a young Indonesian boy who was airlifted to the ship in critical condition, illustrating how Navy assets can provide hope and advanced trauma care where absolutely none existed. (14:55-27:14) Logistical Challenges, Ethical Dilemmas, and Data-Driven Improvements The conversation shifts to the complexities of operating in disaster zones, including language barriers, continuity of care, and resource allocation. Dr. Sechriest details his work with the Naval Health Research Center to analyze mission data, which helped transition staffing models from World War II-era combat configurations to robust teams capable of treating diverse pediatric and geriatric populations. (27:14-36:12) Medical Diplomacy as Soft Power and Training for Future Conflicts Dr. Sechriest explains how humanitarian missions serve as a vital tool for "soft power" in the post-9/11 era, using compassion to improve global security and international relations. He also discusses how the chaotic, resource-constrained environments of natural disasters provide unparalleled training for medical officers preparing for combat operations. (36:12-48:29) The Future of AI in Medicine and Leadership Advice for Aspiring Officers In the final segment, the discussion explores how Artificial Intelligence can reduce administrative burdens for physicians and how smart implants will revolutionize orthopedic recovery. Dr. Sechriest concludes with advice for the next generation of military medical professionals, encouraging them to seek out tough assignments and lead with humility. Take Home Messages Medical Diplomacy as Soft Power: Humanitarian assistance missions are a critical strategic tool that allows the military to project goodwill and strengthen international alliances without firing a shot. By providing high-level medical care to foreign populations during crises, military medicine acts as a stabilizing force that can improve global security and alter negative perceptions of the United States in sensitive geopolitical regions. Data-Driven Operational Readiness: The analysis of surgical logs and patient encounters from previous disaster relief missions is essential for modernizing military medical responses. Research has shown that historical staffing models based on combat trauma were often insufficient for natural disasters, leading to a new focus on deploying with the right mix of pediatric and geriatric resources to match the actual needs of the affected population. The Distinction Between Naval Medical Assets: Understanding the difference between Echelon 3 hospital ships and Echelon 2 casualty receiving and treatment ships is vital for logistical success. While hospital ships offer comprehensive, prolonged care similar to a land-based trauma center, amphibious warships provide essential damage control surgery and superior air and sea transport capabilities to move casualties efficiently. Servant Leadership in Chaos: Leading effectively in the high-stress, chaotic environment of a disaster zone requires a mindset of humility and service rather than authority. The most successful medical officers are those who maintain focus on the mission, prioritize the well-being of their team, and acknowledge that they must rely on the collective expertise of others to solve complex logistical and ethical problems. AI and the Future of Orthopedics: Advanced technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence and smart implants, are poised to revolutionize military and federal medicine by improving efficiency and outcomes. AI has the potential to alleviate provider burnout by automating non-clinical tasks, while sensor-embedded implants will provide objective data on patient recovery, allowing for proactive interventions and better long-term care. Interview withAndrew Penkethman, MD & CEO of Ardea Resources Ltd.Mark Selby, CEO of Canada NickelRecording date: 2nd February 2026The global nickel market is undergoing a fundamental transformation that is creating investment opportunities in Western-controlled supply chains. Andrew Penkethman, CEO of Ardea Resources, and Mark Selby, CEO of Canada Nickel, recently discussed how their large-scale projects in Australia and Canada are positioned to capitalise on this shift. After two challenging years dominated by Indonesian supply flooding global markets, the landscape is changing. Since December 2025, nickel prices have risen approximately $4,500 per ton as Indonesia transitions from overwhelming production to active supply management. Selby characterises Indonesia as "an OPEC of one country," now implementing quota controls rather than unrestricted output. Price increases across the entire supply chain—from ore to nickel pig iron to stainless steel—indicate genuine market tightness rather than temporary speculation. Both executives emphasise a critical distinction between their new development projects and the aging operations that closed in 2024. Legacy assets from BHP and First Quantum represent 30-year-old mines with declining grades, increasing costs, and years of underinvestment. In contrast, Ardea's Goongarrie Hub and Canada Nickel's Crawford project offer fresh economics with 30-50+ year mine lives, substantial resources, and modern processing capabilities that position them favourably on the cost curve.Strategic validation has arrived through significant partnerships. Ardea secured $98.5 million in definitive feasibility study funding from Sumitomo Metal Mining and Mitsubishi Corporation, whilst Canada Nickel attracted Anglo American, Agnico Eagle, and Samsung SDI as investors. These experienced institutions seek long-term supply arrangements spanning decades, not speculative positions.Government support is accelerating development timelines. Both projects have received major project status enabling streamlined permitting and access to sovereign wealth fund financing. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney personally promotes the Crawford project to Middle Eastern investors, whilst Australia develops an "investor front door" program for critical minerals projects. The investment thesis extends beyond electric vehicles into broader critical minerals security. Chinese interests control approximately 80% of refined nickel supply, creating strategic vulnerabilities that Western governments address through supply chain diversification initiatives. With defence spending increasing globally and only a handful of quality nickel projects advancing worldwide, both companies expect construction decisions in 2026-2027.Sign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com
President Trump has said that a possible deal covering the future of Greenland will achieve "everything" he wants - after rowing back on threats to seize the island by force or levy further tariffs on European allies who oppose his desire to own it.
