Welcome back to the Record Report! This week, we're going overseas to hear a rebel's sound. We're talking about British artist M.I.A.'s 2013 Matangi to be exact. M.I.A's career was at a very weird period in the later part of the Blog Era. While the artist's diverse array of sound helped contribute to the early rise of international influence in the 2000s, her success also made her a target for controversy. Fortunately, Matangi was both a daring response to her criticism while still also managing to get people of different backgrounds to the dancefloor. In this episode, we choose our top three tracks, we talk about M.I.A's diverse musical connections to Hip Hop (maybe Baltimore Club Music), and talk how she's contributed to the rise of music across the globe in the modern era of music. Vance also talks about seeing Matangi up close at U Street Music Hall back when it first dropped in 2013. we also talk about what we're listening to, and horrorcore from a Brotha with a wild name. Something very special for episode #75 of the Meet the Locals Podcast, a two hour mix from one of the hardest working members of Washington DC's electronic music community, DJ, Producer & U Street Music Hall owner, @willeastman. To celebrate the launch of his second album Breathe this Friday, Will recorded this two hour mix delving into his inspirations for the album. Be prepared, this one is quite a journey, capturing the broad sonic range you'll hear across the eight tracks of Breathe. "While I was working on this album, my mother died and I faced a huge wall of family health issues. It hit me like a brick at the same time the United States started experiencing a political and cultural tsunami. Things are not ok in my homeland and it would be foolish to pretend they are. This album reflects that tension in its 8 tracks, from opioid addiction to our collective inability to tackle huge issues like mental health treatment and climate change. I put everything I have musically within me into this album,” says Eastman, “and the experience inspired me to share a deeper musical connection with my fans from Hilo, and to reconnect with people from all aspects of my life and tell these stories through music. Personally, I’ve been on a transformative journey this past year and a half during the making of this album, overcoming struggles and putting the new life experience I documented in Hilo to good use. I’m in overdrive." Breathe is available from Will's Bandcamp page https://willeastman.bandcamp.com/ and all the usual outlets from Friday February 8, and you can celebrate the launch at U Street Music Hall on March 16, with sets from Will, Ken Lazee & Ozker. https://www.ustreetmusichall.com/event/1822535-will-eastman-breathe-album-washington/ Breath Inspirations Track list: 24 Hour Experience - Allnighter Adonis - Shout Electric Choc - Shock The Beat Happy Clappers - I Believe Armand Van Helden - Play The World Phase II - Reachin' The Age of Love - Age Of Love Burger/Voight - Bring Trance Back To Reality Lifelike & Kris Menace – Discopolis Metro Area – Miura Stan Getz – Bahia Massive Attack – Karmacoma The Sea and Cake - The Argument Aeroplane – Caramellas Jackpot – Ragazza Giorgio Moroder - From Here To Eternity DJ Falcon – Honeymoon Roman Salzger & Lifelike - Radio 84 The Alan Parsons Project - Sirius Chapterhouse – Pearl Ninotchka - I've Got Wings Stereolab - Cybele's Reverie Star You Star Me - Sweet Things Erlend Øye - Ghost Trains Radiohead - Everything In Its Right Place The Prodigy – Climbatize The Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar Vangelis - The Dragon The Locust - Presence And Gifts Boards Of Canada - Rue The Whirl Cocteau Twins - Heaven Or Las Vegas Brian Eno - Deep Blue Day

Can't believe we've reached episode 65 of the Meet the Locals podcast! This episode features a blissful journey through big, classic 90s house from Nick Garcia, resident of new party Werk Ethic, which celebrates the very best of 90s house and techno. This mix is really talking our language! Some stone cold classics right here. "First of all, this mix was extremely fun to record.  Playing these older records feels a certain way, different than playing brand new records.  It’s like you can feel the history in them.  You imagine all the people that have had amazing moments dancing to them over the span of 10, 15, 20 years.  That’s why I love Werk Ethic, the party that Ken Lazee and I do with U Street Music Hall.  At once it’s a tribute, a history lesson, and a proper party.  I tried to capture the feeling I bring to Werk Ethic in this mix and selected my favorite records from 90’s house and garage.  I included some better known tracks like Frankie Knuckles’ timeless remix of “The Pressure” and Masters at Work’s collaboration with India “To Be In Love,” as well as some rarer tunes that you’d be hard pressed to find digital copies of.  Because that’s the goal with Werk Ethic: entertain and educate.  Bring the tunes that people know and love, and show them some new ones that might blow their mind.  I hope you enjoy this mix and will come out to celebrate the great legacies of house and techno with us on February 23rd at U Street Music Hall!" The second edition of Werk Ethic is at U Street Music Hall here in Washington DC on February 23. This week on the podcast we’re talking new albums from a hot up-and-comer and the return of a pop legend. First up, Grimes’ Art Angels is an unexpected pop explosion that stretches the limits of what we call indie. Is the young producer’s latest effort a missive from the future or one large step towards the mainstream? Then, pop mastermind Jeff Lynne has revived the legendary ELO with a new album Alone In The Universe. Does this deeply personal, reflective cycle of songs live up to the name or is Mr. Blue Sky gone forever.PLUS! Rdio is filing for bankruptcy and Pandora is stripping the company down for parts and we try to get to the bottom of what this may mean for artists and consumers alike. Does this mark the beginning of the streaming wars or is it the start of the slide down to a musical singularity where one stream will rule them all. Also…WTF Adele? 3.85 MILLION?All this plus a new track from DC/Boston’s Kingsley Flood just in time for their show at U Street Music Hall right here in Washington, DC as we close out business as usual in 2015 in style on Episode 144 of ChunkyGlasses: The Podcast! We're back with the seventeenth edition of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast, the time around featuring a great mix from Heather Femia, recorded live on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge in Washington DC on September 13, 2015. Heather is one of the hardest working DJs in town, and we're happy to welcome her to the podcast. Over to Heather for a few words about the mix: "It is always a pleasure to play at Eighteenth Street Lounge, the crowd is really into the music. I was a touch nervous on this one, leading into Sarah Myers and Tara Brooks I felt the mix needed to be more tech than the housey thing I'm more known for. It really gave me a chance to be a bit arty in the early part of the set. Admittedly, it all went happy and housey at the end, but I think Sarah cut me some slack and transitioned into her set flawlessly anyway. A one-of-a kind participatory parade and music festival is descending on the funkiest part of our Nation's Capital, and we have local-boy-made-good Justin Rood to thank for it. Three dozen musical acts will fill eleven free performance areas during the day, leading up to a parade down V Street from 5-7 PM, and from 7 until late into the night, local music venues like U Street Music Hall, Tropicalia, DC9, Twins Jazz Club and Patty Boom Boom will offer free performances. maDCap took a drive with Justin Rood and heard all about the Funk Parade while driving along Saturday's route. On Saturday, May 3, history will be made yet again in the U Street neighborhood of Washington DC. Then, maDCap took Asheville, North Carolina by storm for the 2014 edition of Moogfest. We recorded interviews with @YACHT, The Egyptian Lover, @ZedsDead, Adeline Michèle of @Escort-Records and @Dan-Deacon. The music of Josh Legg exudes a warm glow and a calming glimmer, equally at home in the sunshine or on the water. His project "Goldroom" is sometimes comprised of a live trio and other times as a solo DJ, but all the energy emanates from Josh's prodigious talent as a producer, remixer and songwriter. Dan Bloom caught up with Josh Legg in the elevator of U Street Music Hall (@uhalldc) and discussed his upbringing, his take on music, and the superlative release "Embrace."
