Interview by Kris PetersSydney-based post hardcore four-piece Closure continue their impressive momentum in 2025 after the release of their long-anticipated debut EP, The Sweet Suffering, which is out now on all major streaming platforms. The record includes the previously released singles Hindsight, Glare, and A Cold Space Between, each showcasing the band's evolution into a darker, heavier sonic identity. A deeply personal and hard-hitting project, The Sweet Suffering chronicles emotional resilience, anxiety, the art of letting go, and love. For Closure, this release is more than just a debut — it's a defining moment and the beginning of a powerful new chapter.Riding the momentum of that release, Closure have recently been announced as part of the annual music extravaganza BigSound, which will again be held in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley from September 2 to 5. HEAVY caught up with Closure vocalist Lucy May to discuss BigSound and how Closure got to be there. We also asked her what Closure hopes to get out of the experience."I think just a new experience, definitely," she measured, "and hopefully meeting some people that we haven't had the opportunity to meet before. I feel like, being in a heavier band it's obviously a really tight-knit community, so I think meeting other people obviously… we're self-managed at the moment so we don't have a manager, so I think that would be really something that would be a massive thing if we could maybe connect with some people and have a conversation about that, but honestly just getting out there and supporting people."In the full interview, the discussion covered the musical evolution of Closure from pop punk to post-hardcore, including their debut EP The Sweet Suffering and the DIY production approach for their latest release. We also talked about upcoming performances, networking opportunities at music events, and the importance of strategic industry connections, while Lucy shared insights about their venue plans and plans for future releases and tours. We spoke about the stylistic changes within their music and how they plan to integrate new music into future setlists, the importance of BigSound to emerging Australian artists and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

BIGSOUND can be anything you want it to be. You can choose to revel in the activities and workshops, or check out the band showcase gigs or watch/see/listen to any number of things, but the one thing that catches HEAVY every year is the range of live bands out there plying their trade. This year's BIGSOUND, to be held in the usual areas of Brisbane's Fortitude Valley over September 2 to 5, features more than 120 bands playing across 18 stages so it looks like we are going to have our work cut out for us.But getting to know the bands a little better beforehand always helps, so today we chat with one of the emerging bands from New Zealand heading this way for BIGSOUND, Grecco Romank.Described as offering dysfunctional music - the kind played in your uncle's garage rave while he's in the middle of a hellish k-hole after being dismissed from his drop-shipping office - in a world increasingly obsessed with the exact opposite, Grecco Romank are a breath of fresh air on a scene that is often weighed down too much in its own self-importance.But just to make sure the band are the genuine article, HEAVY sat down to chat with two of the three members, Billie Fee (classical soprano, vocals) and Damian Golfinopoulos (samples, synths and more), to find out just how interestingly different Grecco Romank really are."I've listened to every single one," Damian replied when we mentioned the number of bands playing at BIGSOUND. "It's gonna be a good year, I'm excited."We ask Damian what bands stood out most after listening to them, not at all hoping to catch him out."Spike Fuck, UGLi, Mumfighter, Shock Corridor," he quipped without missing a beat.Maybe they are the real deal... We ask how well prepared the band is for what will be a hectic few days in Australia."We've definitely we've got a bit of homework to do on trying to plan our days and make sure everyone gets to see what they want to see," Billie smiled. "We're also bringing our manager, so he can go do a lot of that stuff on our behalf (laughs)."In the full interview, we further discuss Grecco Romank's upcoming performance at BigSound 2025 in Brisbane, where Damian and Billie shared insights about their band, which has been active for five years and has released three albums, primarily performing in Auckland. They described their music as a fusion of electronic elements and operatic vocals, emphasizing their goal of delivering an engaging live experience. The band is eager to connect with new audiences and fellow artists at the festival, and they plan to participate in workshops and networking events. They also mentioned an unofficial show at the Junk Bar and a subsequent gig in Melbourne. Additionally, they provided details about their acclaimed third album, Arts Colony, highlighting its collaborative nature, the inclusion of a 330-page art book, and a secret version accessible via a code in the book and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We head to Queensland for the penultimate podcast of our Year In Beer 2024 series. As with much of the local beer industry, it's been a challenging time for many in the state. A number of craft beer venues have closed or changed hands, the most high profile of which was Brewski, whose owners Ant and Matt joined us for an earlier show before rocking up with their new My Beer Dealer in Fortitude Valley. Talking of high profile, the voluntary administration and, ultimately, sale of Black Hops Brewing to a new ownership team was among the most talked-about of all the littered the past 12 months in Australia. But, even here, the changes that brought led to an unexpected opportunity for two of the guests on this episode: Phil Sharp and Daniel Venema of Hiker Brewing. They took ownership of Black Hops Brisbane and converted it to their second home, a move they hadn't expected to make for a couple of years yet. However, such a decision feels very in keeping with the brewery's fine start to life. The founders discuss the lean and mean, community-centric ethos that's brought them to this point, the opportunities for smaller, locals-focused breweries to step in as the new pokie-free pub, their fondness for Working Title's beers, and how they were the real winners of the GABS Hottest 100 of 2023. We kick off, however, with Brisbane-based Crafty Pint writer Mick Wüst for his take on the past 12 months: the trends he's witnessed, the beers he's enjoyed, and what he's been up to, which has included publishing a second book and completing a third (both on spirits, following his first on beer). From there, we head to the Sunshine Coast where Craig Williams sits down at the home of Josh Donohoe, founder of Sunshine Coast Craft Beer Tours. A renewed focus on beer tourism is something we wrote about in the national trends article that launched this series and it's cropped up in other episodes, but few are as well versed as Josh. Not only has he been running tours in the region since the days when they had just a handful of breweries, but he's played a central role in the Craft Beer Capital tourism marketing campaign, even travelling with the region's brewers to sing the Sunshine Coast's praises in New Zealand. As a Brisbane girl, this was a very special episode. JC, along with two high school friends started their journey as Powderfinger as high school students from Brisbane. Their careers spanned 21 years and changed the landscape for rock music at the time, particularly for the Brisbane music scene. JC has continued his music journey, behind the scenes opening both the Triffid and Fortitude Valley music Hall. Today on the pod, we chat with Mary Leigh Miller. I'm not going to lie, this was a really tough conversation, and the courage Mary Leigh showed chatting with me about the death of her son, blew me away. Mary Leigh's son, Cole Miller was killed by a Cowards Punch in January 2016 on a night out in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. We talk about the impact this horrendous act has had on her, her family, and the community they are part of. Mary Leigh and her family felt strongly about organ donation and made the decision to donate Cole's organs. We chat about the process of organ donation and the lives Coles organ donation saved. This is a confronting conversation, but Mary Leigh's take away message was to have conversations with your kids and loved ones around organ donation and what a gift it can be to save another's life through organ donation. I was so humbled by this strong and courageous woman. A mother's love is so beautiful. Bek x https://www.donatelife.gov.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Wilkinson over Zoom video!Australian troubadour Mark Wilkinson shares his nuanced and heartfelt new EP Golden Afternoons. Mark centers around the theme of duality and accepting your own weaknesses and strengths in life. Mark reminds himself to “Embrace the Ride,” to let go and feel alive in each moment. Produced in Nashville alongside Owen Lewis (Paris Paloma, Old Sea Brigade, Snow Patrol), the seven-song effort sees the impassioned songwriter reconcile with his insecurities while finding the confidence to take risks despite the fear of failure. The result is a dynamic release with pin-drop moments and grandiose heights.Mark explains, “The EP explores the fine line between light and dark as well as confidence and uncertainty, which are the two states I'm constantly between as an artist and songwriter. Each song touches on these themes as they float through this body of work. It's a reflection of the balancing act.”Mark is also proud to announce the Golden Afternoons 2024 Australian Tour kicking off on April 11th in Fortitude Valley, QLD. Find the full list of tour dates below and for more information visit: www.markwilkinson.com.ABOUT MARK WILKINSON:Life never follows a linear road. Rather, it often forks as we do our best to keep pace in the middle. Mark Wilkinson treads this path in his music. He acknowledges hardship and darkness, only to step into the embrace of the light. The Sydney-based singer and songwriter acutely details this journey through relatable storytelling and hummable songcraft. By considering and understanding life's extremes from the middle, he gets closer to himself on his new EP, Golden Afternoons. After building an international profile by bringing his music directly to the people as a popular busker, he has creatively leveled up with each successive release. He captivated audiences with the likes of Let The River Run [2013], Hand Picked, Vol. 2 [2015], Wasted Hours [2018], and Blue Eyed Girls [2019]. Along the way, he catapulted to #1 on the Australian Independent Charts and sold in excess of 80,000 units. Since the release of 2022's Mariposa EP, he's impressively racked up millions of streams on Spotify and garnered support from Americana Highways, The Bluegrass Situation, and The Wild Is Calling who said, “We see star power and mainstream potential in the spirit of Mumford and Sons, Mt. Joy, or the Lumineers.” Standout single “Grafton St” also found fans at SiriusXM Coffeehouse. This time around, he changed up the process. Mark decamped to Nashville, TN where he recorded what would become Golden Afternoons with producer Owen Lewis (Paris Paloma, Old Sea Brigade, Snow Patrol) in just two weeks.“It was my first time making a project in Nashville,” he reveals.“It was exciting to see the whole thing come together over a short period and work with some amazing musicians. It progresses from the previous EP—which was made in a space of the end of the Pandemic and not knowing anything about what was going to happen. This music comes out of that period with confidence, trying to trust yourself and looking forward to a brighter tomorrow.”We want to hear from you! Paul's mum was just 15 years old when he was born and his brother was born when she was just 12. His mum passed away when he was 3. To say it was an unstable and challenging start to life, is an understatement. However he describes his Grandma, Aunty and Father as God's angels sent to look after him. They provided much needed love and stability. From the age of about 15, Pauls life has been marked by trouble and addiction. He entered the Salvos rehab at Moonyah 23 years ago, when I was the Captain there and he is now involved at Streetlevel in Fortitude Valley, where I bumped into him recently and recorded something of his story.

The Whisky Au Go Go Fire is just as much a mystery today as it was in the hours after the tragedy that took the lives of 15 people in Fortitude Valley on March 8th 1973. Police would start a major investigation that would drag in some of Brisbane's most well known criminals, gangsters, bosses and violent offenders who had spent time together in jails over decades, creating networks and ties that spread down the coast into Sydney. But the investigation would also expose police and political corruption, with a group of officers, who were on the take from those very criminals, potentially using this fire to help some club owners cash in. Was it meant to escalate as it did? Were those 15 people meant to be victims or were they just in the wrong place at the wrong time with an arson attack that went far more successfully than the perpetrators planned? We made it Streets of Your Towners - the 100th episode of the Streets of Your Town podcast!!! This episode we return to the man who so kindly kicked off this crazy Streets of Your Town adventure! The man whose storytelling is equally masterful with words or with the palette knife - who is bookending this series by featuring in episode 1 and 100. This internationally renowned artist - harking from a family of journo's - generously started this podcast series by telling his story - from his idyllic country childhood to rebellious teen, and on to becoming Deputy Mayor of Brisbane, before rediscovering his creative talent anew. Today we re-visit David Hinchliffe in his inner Brisbane city Fortitude Valley home - to find out what's changed for him on the street where he lives, what's different post pandemic, and what has remained the same or even more important than before. The same themes that all of us have pondered, as we reflect on our how our lives have changed too. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Originally from Brisbane's Fortitude Valley, the McDermott & North duo brought their Indie Folk Rock harmonies to the streets of Melbourne. While some buskers search the city's central area for recognition, Paddy (McDermott) and Rhys (North) look towards the suburbs of Melbourne and the countryside of Victoria to present their original songs. Interview recorded on April 25, 2022 (Banana Alley by the Yarra River, Melbourne Central Business District) by Daniel Bacchieri. Music excerpts from the songs "Ally", "Broken Girl", "Everytime (I'm a Little Bit Like You)", "Georgia", "Sunshine Bank Holiday", "Through the Wind", "Anything Sally Says", written by McDermott & North. On today's Zero Limits Podcast I chat with Dustin Osborne current Queensland Police Officer and Co-Chair of the Law Enforcement Officer Medical Working Group at Australian Tactical Medical Association. Dusty has spent roughly 15 years as a police officer spending most of his time posted to the Fortitude Valley Police Station. Fortitude Valley is the smallest policing division in Queensland but has over 130 staff dedicated to policing the division. It's a very diverse area and Dusty regularly attended to violence disturbance with severe trauma (including mental health self harm). By 2014, Dusty got his Senior instructor qualification which is the highest level in instructing for Pistol, Rifle, Taser and hand to hand skills. In 2016, Dusty was selected to be apart of the Active Armed Offender Team. While there he assisted in the design and development of the service skills response to responding to AAO incidents. During this time, I become an advocate for the victim of these events and went on to create Tactical First Aid.Support the show - https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=9LG48GC49TW38Website - www.zerolimitspodcast.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/zero.limits.podcast/?hl=en
