Welcome back to another episode of The Record Report! DISCLAIMER: This episode came out before the Kendrick Lamar vs Drake Beef picked up. If you want to hear our breakdown of the music that came out, peep our full breakdown episode Anywho, for this week, we'll be taking a dark turn with a review of Kanye West's fourth studio album 808s & Heartbreak. When this album dropped in 2008, it was a surprise for the music world. Kanye's previous projects were joyous and sometimes experimental but stuck within the forms of Hip-Hop. However, after suffering the loss of his mother and a hard breakup with his then-girlfriend, 808s was a pivotal turn for the Chicago artist. Instead of using sampled beats to lay down clever rhymes relatable to his listeners, the project instead went into the realms of 80s Nu Wave with a minimalist tone to tell a story of pain and reflection. With this episode's special guest Z (@ZTVInspire), the guys choose their top three tracks, talk about the criticism at the time of the project's release, and talk about how it eventually became a pillar of the Blog Era of music in the early 2010s. They also talk about The Kendrick/Drake Beef, Mr. Hudson, and Lil Wayne using autotune. @Yo_Ahki/@VanceB_ Listen to this new episode and previous others on: Apple Podcasts(https://tinyurl.com/jydzz9fk) Spotify (https://tinyurl.com/c3u77hcf) Anchor (https://anchor.fm/recordreport) Follow Record Report Podcast on: Instagram: (@RecordRepPod) Facebook: Facebook.com/RecordReportPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/recreppodcast?lang=en #KanyeWest #LilWayne #808sAndHeartbreaks #808 #Chicago #ZackFox #Kamauu #SkillaBaby #2008 #KidCudi #Radio #Podcast

Welcome back to the Record Report! This week, we're taking a trip inside the mind of a musical genius. There are a lot of different opinions about Mac Miller. His original brand was polarizing in the Blog Era, but his musical growth always remained intact throughout his career. That seems to be how he made Faces, his 11th mixtape that was released on May 11th, 2014. Compared to many other albums, this one takes a serious dark turn. The Pittsburgh artist managed to blend jazz with modern sounds to illustrate the madness that he encompassed on his journey. Fortunately, there are bright spots that also boost his boisterous personality, and both highs and lows come together to create an experience that makes you both excited for Mac Miller's experimentation, but more concerned about the demons he faced. In this episode, we choose our top three tracks, talk about some of the samples used in Faces, and talk about how it felt to listen to the album knowing the struggles he faced in life until his end. we also talk about what we're listening to, and secret/hidden features in music. Welcome back to the Record Report! This week, we're going overseas to hear a rebel's sound. We're talking about British artist M.I.A.'s 2013 Matangi to be exact. M.I.A's career was at a very weird period in the later part of the Blog Era. While the artist's diverse array of sound helped contribute to the early rise of international influence in the 2000s, her success also made her a target for controversy. Fortunately, Matangi was both a daring response to her criticism while still also managing to get people of different backgrounds to the dancefloor. In this episode, we choose our top three tracks, we talk about M.I.A's diverse musical connections to Hip Hop (maybe Baltimore Club Music), and talk how she's contributed to the rise of music across the globe in the modern era of music. Vance also talks about seeing Matangi up close at U Street Music Hall back when it first dropped in 2013. we also talk about what we're listening to, and horrorcore from a Brotha with a wild name. It's a fascinating look into how the music superstars of today were put on by a small group of kids behind keyboards. This 10-part docu-style audio series - which traces the rollercoaster ride of 2007-2012, when hip-hop met the internet - features stories from 150 influential voices, including Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Joe Budden, Bun B, The Cool Kids, and many, many more! In Downtown Manhattan, a small group of friends attracted attention worldwide thanks to MySpace. There was so much talent within this community: Kid Cudi, Teyana Taylor, Wale, the Cool Kids. But it was Mickey Factz who broke out first, once he was posted on a website called NahRight. The music and media industries didn't take notice until January ‘07, when DJ Drama - the biggest mixtape DJ - was put on the ground by Georgia police with RICO warrants. The dominos tipped and The Blog Era began.
Hey guys, if you've been wondering why this feed has been so quiet as of late, it's because we've all been busy! Jada has a coffee line. Styles has a PB&J line. Sheek has a new lighting accessories line. (He doesn't, but wouldn't that be fire? Sheek's Shades?) And we've spent the last three years quietly and diligently working on a new podcast called The Blog Era. It's a fascinating look into how the music superstars of today were put on by a small group of kids behind keyboards. This 10-part docu-style audio series - which traces the rollercoaster ride of 2007-2012, when hip-hop met the internet - features stories from 150 influential voices, including Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Joe Budden, Bun B, The Cool Kids, and many, many more!If you love the wit and thought and care that's at the root of every 2J2BD episode, you're going to LOVE The Blog Era!! (And don't worry, we're definitely working on new 2J2BD stuff, coming soon!!) Make sure to listen to the first two episodes of The Blog Era RIGHT NOW wherever you listen to podcasts!! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
