Episode 71: Harvey Mason Sr. You've heard Harvey Mason Sr., whether you realize it or not. From the iconic grooves of Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters to the GRAMMY-winning “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal, Harvey's drumming has shaped music history across genres, decades, and mediums — albums, film scores, and TV alike. He's not only a musical powerhouse, but a dear friend, and in this episode, we finally sat down to dig into his legendary run — especially his work with Herbie Hancock and the Head Hunters album. Harvey shares the story of how that band came together, the sessions behind Chameleon and Watermelon Man, and why he chose not to tour with them at the height of their success. We also dive into his solo career — how it started, how it evolved, and the surprising role Clive Davis played in making it all happen. Harvey opens up about his long-standing friendships and collaborations with Quincy Jones and Chick Corea, his approach to fatherhood (including raising his sons Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, and Max Mason, former VP of Quincy Jones Productions), and how he built a legacy both on and off the kit. Fun fact: Vic Firth was Harvey's teacher — and Harvey still receives royalties from the early days of Vic Firth drumsticks! We also get into his stunning new album Changing Partners: Trios 2, featuring the likes of Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, James Genus, Dave Grusin, Stanley Clarke. This conversation is a masterclass in musicianship, legacy, and love for the craft. Enjoy my sit-down with the incomparable Harvey Mason Sr. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Tom Morris is the author of Always the Music, a book I consider a must-read for anyone looking to understand the ins and outs of the classical music business—how it operates, its challenges, and the fascinating personalities involved. Tom has had an extraordinary journey in the world of music, having experienced it all from multiple perspectives. He started as a percussionist, performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and eventually became the General Manager of the same institution. Later, he served as the Executive Director of the Cleveland Orchestra for 17 years, where he made a lasting impact. Most recently, he was the Artistic Director of the renowned Ojai Music Festival, a position he held from 2004 to 2019. In our conversation, we delve into many aspects of his book and his life, a life filled with passion, dedication, and invaluable insights into the classical music world. In Part 1, we explore Tom's early musical journey, beginning as a percussion student and the significant influence of Vic Firth, the legendary timpanist of the Boston Symphony. From there, Tom moved into a pivotal role as the General Manager of the BSO. Along the way, he formed lasting friendships with some of the most influential figures in classical music, including composer Oliver Knussen, conductor John Williams—who joined the Boston Pops in 1980—and the visionary Pierre Boulez. We also discuss Tom's time at the Cleveland Orchestra, where he made a lasting impact, especially through successful European tours and innovative programming that helped elevate the orchestra's profile. In Part 2 [Subscriber Content], we turn to an influential figure who shaped Tom's approach to leadership and problem-solving: author Jim Collins, best known for his book Good to Great. Tom shares how he brought Collins in to help refine the Cleveland Orchestra's strategy, offering a fascinating insight into his thinking on organizational development. We also discuss a significant shift in how conductors approach programming, with many now focusing on the concert as a whole rather than simply selecting individual pieces. Finally, we wrap up with Tom reflecting on his time as Artistic Director of the Ojai Music Festival, where his leadership left a lasting legacy.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? Florida native McCoy Gibbs made the move to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 18 to pursue a Music Business degree at Belmont University.  He not only earned that degree, but also made lifelong connections and friendships while falling in love with the city, energy, and opportunity that is Nashville.  The crazy part is that Gibbs didn't really learn to play drums until his college years.  For this natural musician, drums and rhythm came naturally and he found his groove, literally. After college, Gibbs emerged as a drummer while playing with pop/rock band Hot Celle Rae.  He then went on to become an independent drummer to soak in all the music he could.  During this time he met tons of musicians, bands and artists, cut his teeth on the grind of Broadway bars and “honky tonks,” and jumped in a van for a random show in Montana.  He loved every minute of it. In 2013, his hard work paid off when Gibbs successfully auditioned for CMA-nominated Duo of the Year, Love and Theft, and hit the road for the busiest year of his life thus far.  It hasn't slowed down for him since.  From touring, live TV performances, music videos and award shows, Gibbs has kept himself quite busy. Gibbs is currently playing with 2017 CMA New Artist of the Year nominee Lauren Alaina, and continues to find other ways to fill in the occasional off day with sessions, shows, and housework.  If there is an example of hard work, passion, and preparation paying off, McCoy Gibbs is that example.   Some Things That Came Up:  -2:45 Tall drummers  -4:15 Playing the Opry -5:00 Imposter Syndrome?  -5:20 Musical family. Thanks for checking out episode 44 with Martin Potts who works for the distributor KORG UK in a role as UK Artist Relations for Paiste, Vic Firth & Mapex drums but also has control of the marketing for Mapex in the UK.In this episode, Martin and I chat about his history of playing drums which included him reaching grade 8 at a young age, but sadly due to problems with arthritis couldn't persue much in his playing career. So we naturally discussed his journey of working within the musical instruments industry and how he started working in a drum shop and has worked his way up in the world of musical instrument distribution within multiple companies to where he is today and how the industry has changed over the years. We also discussed some interesting topics such as artist endorsements and what Artist Relations at drum companies look for in new artists and how artists should initially approach them with regards to applications etc. Martin also talked about how he organises the marketing side of things for Mapex including social media content and how difficult it can be to get it right. Overall, a really interesting conversation from another side of the drum world that doesn't often get covered on this show.I hope you enjoy this free episode, please subscribe to the podcast via your podcast provider & YouTube, like and review where you can and share with anyone else who might be interested. If you've enjoyed any of my episodes, please consider joining my Patreon community via Patreon at http://www.patreon.com/drumforthesong/ for access to exclusive content, group video calls, competitions, giveaways plus 20% discount at http://www.motorhead-beer.comI'd like to give a special thanks to my top-tier 'Groove Master' Patrons for their extended support. Kenny Aronoff is one of the most influential and in-demand drummers and percussionists in the world. He has entertained millions of people with his drumming, has played on thousands of records, and has been the “go-to” drummer for the biggest stars in music while providing the beat of American culture over four decades! https://kennyaronoff.com/ Kenny grew up in a big country farmhouse in a small town of 3,000 people in the hills of western Massachusetts. He was a self-taught drummer who at the young age of 16 decided to learn how to play timpani, mallets, and legit snare drum. He studied and played with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, including world-renowned timpanist Vic Firth. He went on to study for one year at the university of Massachusetts and four years at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, where among other honors, he was awarded the school's prestigious performer's certificate. During summer breaks, when he wasn't studying timpani with Vic Firth, he played in symphony orchestras at the Aspen Music Festival (run by the Juilliard School of Music) and the Tanglewood Music Festival (run by the Boston Symphony Orchestra). After graduating, Kenny was offered timpani positions in several symphony orchestras, but instead said “no” because he still wanted to be in a rock ‘n' roll band and be part of a team of musicians that recorded music and toured the world, just like The Beatles did. Kenny spent one year studying drum set with Alan Dawson in Boston and Gary Chester in New York before moving back to Bloomington to start his own band, “Streamwinner“. Pete Thorn Bio-While prolific guitar sideman Pete Thorn may refer to himself as a “guitar nerd” – his resume proves he's anything but. His effortless, dynamic playing has landed him onstage alongside such legendary artists as Don Henley, Chris Cornell and Melissa Etheridge among others — and his debut solo CD Guitar Nerd garnered critical praise and landed on CD Baby's top selling albums list.Channeling his inner gear nerd, Thorn has taken to demonstrating guitar gear and accessories on his wildly popular Youtube channel (at this writing, 90,000 subscribers and growing rapidly). Pete's videos have so far garnered more than 17 million views – proving there's a lot of “guitar nerds” out there. But if a lifelong, unabashed passion for playing guitar in all its styles and permutations with some of the best artists in the world qualifies as “nerd” status…? Then Pete Thorn is, indeed, a fabulous guitar nerd.FELIPE TORRES Drums/Percussion/Backing Vocal Performance /Recording Artist/ClinicianFelipe has performed around the USA, Europe, Japan, Australia, and Canada, as well as appearing on The CBS Morning Show, TV Land, The Biography Channel, The Modern Drummer Festival 2008 and has had his articles published on the Evans and Vic Firth websites. We hope you will consider showing your support through our Patreon page. This helps to keep the episodes coming. Thank you so much! https://www.patreon.com/theplayerswebcast I have been following Sergio Bellotti for many years. He is among the top perforners and educators in the music business. This interview goes deep into the topics of education (bringing out the best in your students and watching them evolve), professionalism, learning, performing, and much more. Watch, learn, and enjoy. There's GREAT education in this interview. Here's a bit more information about the rich and diverse career of Sergio Bellotti. Sergio Bellotti is an international artist and Renaissance man. As a powerful and tremendously gifted drummer, he's played with some of the world's finest musicians. As an educator, he's an in demand clinician as well as a professor at the esteemed Berklee College of Music. As an entrepreneur, he owns 247 Drums which caters to the needs of drummers everywhere. Hailing from Bari, Italy, Sergio's passion for music and accomplished drumming spurred him to move to Boston in 1995 to attend the Berklee College of Music. Shortly after arriving in the U.S., Sergio met his longtime musical partner, fellow Italian expatriate and bassist extraordinaire, Tino D'Agostino. Together they founded and continue to lead Spajazzy, a jazz fusion group, which has featured guitarist Mike Stern on both of their cd releases. Good company indeed. In addition to his professorship at Berklee, where students from all over the world come to study, Sergio serves as a visiting artist at the GM Drum School in Torino, Italy and as a faculty member at the Conservatorio Della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. Sergio is the founder of the “Do You Speak Drumming?” program and often travels to Europe to conduct clinics, concerts and master classes. He is a drum artist for both Yamaha Acoustic and Electronic drums. Sergio has recorded or shared the stage with world class musicians such as Blues Hall of Fame and Grammy nominated Joe Louis Walker, Mike Stern, The Platters, The Drifters, Tom Scott, Nathan East, Robben Ford, Alessandra Belloni, Bernard Purdie and Rocco Ventrella to name but a few. He has performed at international festivals such as the Montreal Drum Fest, The Golden Jazz 2015 in China, Bari In Jazz 2010,Cape Breton International Drum Fest, Berklee World Percussion Festival and the PASIC and 5 consecutive KOSA festivals. Sergio has been based in Boston ever since arriving in 1995 and is still immersed in the city's lively music scene. He holds down the drum throne for his weekly gig with We Jazz Up. Their Tuesday night show at Slade's has become a time honored ritual and one never knows which talented musician might visit to sit in. In addition to being an artist, educator and clinician, Sergio ministers to the needs of drummers with his shop, 247 Drums. The major manufacturers of drum gear have recognized his talents, and besides Yamaha, Sergio is also an endorser for Remo drumheads, Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth drum sticks and the Vibe T5 Stick which he designed himself. Whether playing, recording, teaching or supplying drummers with gear, Sergio Bellotti is truly a renaissance man.
