Released July 18, 2000, the Philadelphia star's Grammy-nominated project was one of the first to introduce a new sound to the music world. Welcome back to Episode 10 of the Record Report! This week, we're reviewing Freddie Gibb and Madlib's first collaborative album, Pinata. With the album dropping reasonably early in March of 2014, it quickly became a standout gem in a very buzzing year in music. Pinata garnered critical acclaim thanks to a surprising blend of raw street rhymes from Gibbs with eclectic beats made by Madlib coated with Blaxploitation-themed skits and clips. From hustling out the streets of Gary, Indiana to building a home for himself in California, Pinata talks about Freddie's life at the time of his early rise to Hip Hop glory. On the flip side, the project features an incredible set of Madlib beats that mold classic love ballads and jazz numbers into bangers that the rapper skates on. Like we always do this time... Welcome back to the Record Report! This week, we're taking a trip inside the mind of a musical genius. There are a lot of different opinions about Mac Miller. His original brand was polarizing in the Blog Era, but his musical growth always remained intact throughout his career. That seems to be how he made Faces, his 11th mixtape that was released on May 11th, 2014. Compared to many other albums, this one takes a serious dark turn. The Pittsburgh artist managed to blend jazz with modern sounds to illustrate the madness that he encompassed on his journey. Fortunately, there are bright spots that also boost his boisterous personality, and both highs and lows come together to create an experience that makes you both excited for Mac Miller's experimentation, but more concerned about the demons he faced. Welcome to Episode 3 of your favorite music podcast, The Record Report. This week, we'll be taking a BUS RIDE (all puns intended) through Kaytranada's debut studio album, 99.9%. Following a slew of SoundCloud flips to get people to the dancefloor in the early 2010s like his flip of Teedra Moses' track "Just Wanna Be Your Girl," Kaytranada was on a steady rise in the music industry. The hype only kicked into a second gear when he signed to XL Recordings in 2014 and the label eventually announced that he would drop a debut album. "LEAVE ME ALONE" was the lead single that most fans knew, but the Montreal producer had a knack for teasing tracks from 99.9% throughout several live mixes while touring, from Broccoli City Fest to Afropunk. When 99.9% came out, the album met much-deserved critical and commercial acclaim for having such a refreshing sound in (what was at the time) the turning tide of music. However, what we didn't know coming back into it now is how much it's aged like a fine wine. Not only was Kaytra's debut a precursor for his historical Grammy-winning album BUBBA, but it included a wide variety of talent from young legends like Craig David and Phonte to artists that set the tone for the industry in the 2010s like Syd and Anderson .Paak. For this episode, we choose our top 3 songs from 99.9%, talk about the album's importance to the electronic/house genre at that time, and give our flowers to several underrated artists who made a splash in the 2010s from River Tiber to BadBadNotGood. Welcome back to the Record Report Season 3! For episode 2, we'll be tasting a little Dirty Sprite. DS2 that is... While Trap Music was already growing as a sub-genre in the early 2010s with acts like Migos, Future was an artist to watch thanks to early bangers like "Tony Montana" and "Move That Dope." His 2015 run would be historical in many ways from DJ Esco coming home, to dropping both Monster and 56 Nights as a lead-up to his 3rd album, but DS2 was the album that would push Future to the forefront of the genre. DS2 was a project that not only made him a superstar, but it also was one of the projects to transition the sound of rap to the current decade. His music was everywhere and (aside from performing at festivals like Made In America), even finished the summer off with a Drake collab that helped pushed Apple Music into the streaming industry. We didn't know how much this new success (and pressure) affected him. Sure, DS2 was both successful and critically acclaimed, but after hearing his commentary for the album, you get a deeper dive into where Future was when he made his most known project. 2011 was such a great year for the blog era of music. Don't believe us? That year includes debut releases from future superstars like Frank Ocean, Tyler the Creator, and The Weeknd. However, it was also another year of consistency from an artist that is the poster child for this characteristic in Hip Hop. We're talking about Curren$y the Spitta and one of his most highly acclaimed mixtapes in his rather large catalog, Covert Coup. Not only was this a critical project for the Louisiana rapper's musical development at the peak of the industry in the blog era (that being the late 2000s/early 2010s), but it is exclusively produced by Grammy-nominated producer The Alchemist, includes features from artists like Grammy-nominated Freddie Gibbs and the late Prodigy, and was also a pivotal mixtape in Curren$y's musical trajectory into being one of Hip Hop's most consistent artists of the modern era. For a certain time as an indie act through his label Jet Life Recordings, Curren$y released projects on Bandcamp following Covert Coupe. Most of the projects were collaborative mixtapes with DJ Drama and Harry Fraud. However, these projects truly stretched Spitta's musical element before he continued to release mixtapes every year until now. This project helped start Curren$y's collaborative LPs with producers and even included talent that much of the rap community see as modern icons. This week, with the homie Dave (@TrapBasquiat) pulling up for the four-peat, we go song-by-song on the 10-track LP and talk about previous Curren$y concerts we've experienced, Freddie Gibbs' rise in the blog era, and how this project became arguably the best mixtape in Curren$y's long list of projects. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is an essential album that introduced the vibrant sounds of A Tribe Called Quest. Armed with a plethora of obscure jazz samples and ambitious beat-breaks, the collective created a new sound that would skyrocket its members into music stardom while creating another sub-genre of rap music in the term "conscious rap." Those terms may be eschewed now due to artists bending genres with new ideas through production and vocals, but the late 80s/ early 90s were still dominated by more hardcore acts like NWA, and record labels still had major control over artists' image. Sometimes, music can bring together old ties that never break, and this week, our guest (@waxfroetic aka @aticketfortwo) was a friend from Morgan who experienced the rise of the greatest music collective of the 2010s, Odd Future. When the OF Tape Vol. 2 dropped back in 2011, the project showcased a much brighter and popular Odd Future compared to their previous projects while maintaining the darkness that artists like Tyler, the Creator have established with Bastard. It was also the only collective album to feature Frank Ocean as a member of the legendary group. This week, the Co-Hosts and Special Guest choose their top 2, discuss the Grammys, and talk about how Odd Future is arguably the greatest music collective of the 2010s. This week, we go back to listen to one of the greatest Hip Hop runs from a collective in the early-to-late 2000s. With Cam'ron coming off of his 3rd LP Come Home With Me, the Harlem MC wanted to dedicate a project to his prospective homies under the widely known collective, The Diplomats. With dope samples, rough lyrics, and bangers like “Dipset Anthem,” the debut LP from the Diplomats was a precursor to an era of culture inspired by a rather rambunctious group, but with the talent to match. With both co-hosts rocking durags in respect of the project (and Vance drinking Shiraz out of the bottle), the two hosts choose their top three, talk about Dipsets' run throughout the 2000s, Jim Jones' impact in fashion and his current run a great music, and the Diplomat's musical ties to the South during it's early rise and impact on today's hip hop. After the success of his debut album, Rolling Papers, Wiz Khalifa became a full superstar, moved to LA and married Amber Rose. This led many of his original fans "Taylors" to think that the Pop sounds of Rolling Papers was his new sound and he was no longer making the music that won them over. Taylor Allederdice proved them wrong. This "mixtape" showed everyone that Wiz could combine all of his sounds into one cohesive body of work. We also discussed independent artist, how much better music is now that we can have a diverse group of women rappers, Smoke DZA not getting his flowers, +++ Listen to this new episode and previous others on: Apple:https://apple.co/3joE6Db Spotify:http://shorturl.at/HIQZ9 Linktree: https://linktr.ee/RecordReportPodcast Like, Comment, Share. Following a few popular online singles in the previous years, St. Louis artist Smino has been able to establish an audience thanks to his slurred hometown accent and fresh beats made by Chicago producer, Monte Booker. In 2017, He dropped Blkswn, an album that not only had some speaker-worthy bangers, but managed to add a sense of humanity to a city still healing three years after a summer of trauma. The critical success of Blkswn has made Smino a standout in the late 2010s and he continues to grow with the help of new sounds Kenny Beats. Along with our guest Josh (@BlackOrpheus) we choose our top three tracks and discuss Smino's versatility, the rise of Chicago music during the blog era, and how he used an experimental project to let the world know where he's from.
