Artists have a duty to claim that their most recent project is the best work they have ever done. But what if it's true? I'm so taken with David Gray's new album Dear Life (released January 2025) - and so too is David of course - that it seemed churlish to dwell too much on his earlier career success, no matter just how definitive that was. “I'm always all in with the new stuff. If I wasn't I would just retire. It's always a moment of total commitment. I like the danger of writing and recording. There is gold in them there hills and you have got to go and find it”. Dear Life is led by rhythmic singing and short-story style writing, underpinned by unusual song arrangements. But the songs catch on, almost every one a ‘grower'. It's one of those records that is shot-through with reflection, philosophy, mortality. You could say it's a mid-life record and there is nothing wrong with that, given how well it stands up to his classic breakthrough work White Ladder and his first decade of popular success. “I feel like these songs are strong enough to go shoulder to shoulder with the big songs”. His instincts this time around, are good. When David Gray takes to the stage on his extensive 2025 tour to play songs like Leave Taking, Fighting Talk and (recent single) Plus & Minus, he will not need to precursor them with an apology. The understated quality of the past 10 years' work is a run of form that may have gone unnoticed by the music industry mainstream, but also suggests that Gray has been building to a head of steam. If this was 2004, he would be releasing Dear Life into the world as a surefire classic album. But here we are in 2024 - algorithm powered and neck deep in social clips. Releasing a magnificent record into the content void of today guarantees nothing. Especially when you are running your own small record label as Gray now is. “You've got to go on a cookery show just to get the opportunity to play a song for two minutes.” White Ladder was one of those CDs everybody had. It came at the end of the CD era, one of the last albums that achieved cultural ubiquity. Lest we forget, the record was self-funded (on a budget of £5,000) and self-released. Inventing a sub-genre is one thing, and with White Ladder, David Gray did that - folktronica was the label the music press attached to it. But there was much more to it than that. In a sense, Gray pioneered bedroom pop, 20 years before it became huge on Spotify. Rex Orange County, Yellow Days, Alfie Templeman and a whole generation of others owe something to him. But his huge success with White Ladder will always leave him with something to prove. “The disaprovers are waiting every time you do something new. But I'm a very determined person. But then I love doing what I do. There is no trout farm for me. I just love doing this thing. And it's getting richer and richer. There is always more to put into song”. He is literally making music for Dear Life. It shows. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

John sits down with Rex Orange County and producers Jim Reed and Teo Halm, to talk about how he wrote and recorded his latest album ‘The Alexander Technique'. Alex O'Connor, better known as Rex Orange County, is an English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Teaching himself music production at 16 years old, within a year he released his debut album ‘Bcos U Will Never B Free'. Since then, Alex has been consistently releasing successful music, including his fourth album, ‘Who Cares?', which became his first to top the UK album charts, alongside platinum-certified hits like ‘Sunflower', ‘Best Friend', and ‘Loving Is Easy'. In conversation with Rex and his producers, Jim Reed and Teo Halm, they dig into the creative process behind his new album, sharing original demos, discussing the plugins that shaped the album, and demonstrating how some synthesizer parts were created using Teo's iPhone. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriters separated by thousands of miles who came together recently for a killer single: Remi Wolf and Benny Sings. Wolf has been writing songs since her early teens, but it wasn't until a couple of years ago that her neon pop jams starting getting some social media attention. A major label came calling, and Wolf spent a good chunk of the early pandemic making her full-length debut album Juno, which she named after her recently adopted dog. It's one of those deceptively sunny records that hides some bigger emotions inside huge hooks, and it led to a bunch of amazing singles like “Anthony Kiedis”—that's the name of the song— and tours: Wolf will play Coachella next month. As you'll hear in this chat, Wolf met Dutch singer-songwriter Benny Sings when both were playing a Spanish festival that had some kind of Medieval theme. Wolf was already a fan of Benny's work, both as a performer and a producer: Not only has he released a ton of great music on his own, but he also co-wrote a hit with Rex Orange County and has worked with the likes of Mac Demarco. Benny's music has a sort of classic soft-pop vibe; he playfully mixes in hip-hop and island vibes on occasion, too, making the sort of breezy songs that easily get stuck in your head. When it came time to record his brand new album Young Hearts, which comes out next week, he reached out to Remi for some vocal assistance. The result is a delightful little nugget called “Pyjamas.” Check out that song right here. In this chat, Remi and Benny talk about collaborating on the video for “Pyjamas”—she directed it, adding some of the visual flair she's known for. They also chat about songwriting in general—whether it's craft or divination, and they get into whether technology is good or evil—and whether these two would survive a tech-pocalypse. Enjoy. I'm not sure what that has to do with the band 10 cc exactly, what with their high highs and low lows, the same band capable of trotting out a perfect all time classic like 'I'm Not In Love' along side some sort of song about Minestrone (which somehow actually charted).'I'm Not In Love' alone could have made for a solid hour of chatter, what with the story about how they laid down layers upon layers of voice tracks, the true aesthetic which could be best felt by laying down on the ground in the studio and letting the track wash over them, which they actually did.Don't get me started on the fact that eventually the band broke up into two equal halves, a pop half and an art half, and that the art half (I think?) was responsible for an all time ditty of their own, and one of the weirdest album covers ever. Swing for the fences, I guess. No, don't get me started on any of that. But do lend an ear. There are plenty of yarns to spin.In This Episode:A Few Minutes With:Rex Orange County - Loving Is EasyA Current Affair:Silk Sonic - Fly As MeListen to the album on Spotify
Benny Sings is a Dutch musician, songwriter and producer who has released 10 albums to great international success, the latest being 'Young Hearts' in 2023. Benny also has collaborated with artists like Mac DeMarco, Rex Orange County and Free Nationals. In Season 9: Episode 9 of Beach Weekly, we are looking at major headlines from across Long Beach and Southern California. Last Friday, U.S. President Joe Biden visited Southern California and spoke at Irvine Valley College. Biden advocated for lower prescription drug costs, recognized the ongoing social protests in Iran, and endorsed U.S. Representative Katie Porter in her run for re-election in CA's 45th congressional district. Ron Herrera, the president of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, resigned last Monday after he was recorded on tape having a conversation with other LA City Council members that included racist remarks. Herrera's resignation followed that of Nury Martinez, former president of the LA City Council who was also heard on the tape. Last weekend, there was a small oil spill off the coast near Alamitos Beach in Long Beach. The U.S. Coast Guard and Long Beach Fire Department said the spill had dissipated, but that they will continue to monitor the area. Last Thursday, at least three cases of the avian flu were confirmed near El Dorado Park in Long Beach. While transmission of the virus to humans or other animals is rare, Long Beach health officials recommend avoiding contact with any wild birds. COVID-19-related hospitalizations are continuing to decline in LA County. However, public health officials are encouraging residents to receive the newest COVID-19 booster shot in an effort to ward off a potential surge in cases over the fall and winter months. Last Saturday, a person was arrested in Whittier for suspicion of driving under the influence on horseback. The person initially refused to pull over, though after a short pursuit by police the person surrendered and was charged. The horse was taken care of by officers at a Whittier police station. Elon Musk announced last Saturday that his company, SpaceX, will continue to fund the Starlink satellite program. The announcement came days after Musk threatened to cut funding for the program, which has been integral in maintaining Ukraine's communication network during its ongoing war with Russia. In Russia last Saturday, two gunmen killed 11 people and injured 15 others who had volunteered to fight for Russia in its war against Ukraine. The shooting took place at a firearms training session, and is one of multiple mass shootings to take place in Russia in protest of President Vladimir Putin's call-up of 300,000 citizens to fight in the war. We had the pleasure of interviewing Mia Rodriguez over Zoom video!Australian pop luminary Mia Rodriguez releases her first single of 2022, “Shut Up” alongside a rainbow-hued music video that stars Mia. Watch HERE! “Shut Up” follows Mia's viral success of her 2020 song “Psycho,” her official signing to Atlantic Records in partnership with City Pop Records, and 2021 single “Billion Dollar Bitch” feat. Yung Baby Tate. Watch out. There's a new bad bitch in town. 19-year-old Australian singer-songwriter Mia Rodriguez is a force to be reckoned with, with her unapologetic attitude, unwavering ambition, infectious dark-pop sound, and trendsetting personal style. Named “Best New Artist” at the 2021 Rolling Stone Australia Awards (where she also took the stage for an immersive, show-stopping performance of “Psycho”), Mia Rodriguez spans the divide between alternative indie and melodic mainstream styles. Inspired by a wide range of musical approaches, from K-pop to hip-hop, the singer-songwriter-musician began posting inventive videos on TikTok, quickly building a fervent fan following now exceeding 2M. Signed as the first artist to the new City Pop Records label (co-founded by legendary Australian concert promoter Michael Chugg and his business partner Andrew Stone), Rodriguez unveiled her captivating debut single, “Emotion,” in late 2019 alongside an official music video streaming now at YouTube HERE. “Psycho” followed and immediately, earning over 24.7 million global streams, and catapulted Rodriguez to the forefront of Australia's contemporary pop scene. A third single, “Beautiful & Bittersweet” – like both “Emotion” and “Psycho,” – dropped alongside an official video streaming now at Rodriguez's popular YouTube channel HERE.Among the many accolades accrued by Rodriguez in just one short year include being named by Australia's national radio station as a “triple j Unearthed Feature Artist” as well as a prestigious “Unearthed Artist of the Year” nomination at the Australian Broadcasting Company's annual J Awards. Rodriguez recently offered a spectacular rendition of Rex Orange County's “Corduroy Dreams” as part of triple j's famed “Like A Version” series, streaming HERE; the session also featured a unique live take on “Psycho,” streaming HERE.We want to hear from you!
