VHS Rewind's review of "This is Spinal Tap," which was released on March 2, 1984, praised the music and the director's incredible job. They raved about the film's soundtrack, which featured original songs performed by the fictional rock band Spinal Tap. The songs were not only hilarious, but also impressively catchy, and the reviewers praised the band's talent and the quality of the music. They also lauded the film's satirical take on the rock and roll lifestyle, which poked fun at the excesses and absurdities of the genre. They were also impressed with the direction of the film, which was helmed by Rob Reiner. They noted that Reiner's background in comedy and his previous work as an actor and director allowed him to expertly balance the film's humor and heart. The film's mockumentary style, which presented Spinal Tap as a real band with real problems, was also praised for its authenticity and attention to detail. Hasler and Jeacoma commented on how the film was able to capture the spirit of the rock and roll world, while still managing to be a hilarious and entertaining satire. Overall, VHS Rewind's review of "This is Spinal Tap" was incredibly positive, and it reflected the film's enduring legacy as a cult classic and a seminal work of comedy. The film has since gone on to influence countless other mockumentaries and rock and roll satires, and it continues to be celebrated for its hilarious performances, memorable music, and expert direction.

It is that time of the year when we all gather with family and friends to give thanks…for the madness that is the 1982 NBC Thanksgiving Day Parade telecast. VHS Rewind is proud to serve our listeners with a Thanksgiving feast full of all the fixins (out of tune marching bands, butter-fingered baton twirlers, falling dancers, out of control balloons threatening innocent bystanders, really bad lip-synching from some big-name (well, in 1982) performers (some of whom are coked out of their minds), some amazing coats made of the most exotic animals worn by most everyone on-camera and THE MOST BIZARRE SEGMENT IN A THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE IN TV HISTORY – Uncle Miltie (and his enormous schlong, if Gilbert Gottfried is to be believed) in a dress, a very eager 12 year old Ricky Schroeder as Ms Uncle Miltie's suitor, pedophilia…how this got past the network censors, we will never know). And then, the main course: the arrogant, pompous, humorless, full-of-himself turkey that is Bryant Gumbel. Listen as Mark and Christopher hilariously carve up Gobble Gobble Gumbel and his soul-sucking, fun-deadening parade commentary and barely disguised disdain for co-host (cute-as-a-button) Sarah Purcell and every costumed character he is forced to talk to during the telecast. Please join us for this very special holiday episode and stuff yourself silly with (we hope) laughter and good times.

Is Roger Moore still the funniest thing about the movie or is Mel Tillis f-f-f-f-funnier? Of the two, who is better looking: Adrienne Barbeau or Tara Buckman? Why does Dean Martin look soooooo f*cked up? Which car in this flick is the coolest? Smut Peddler has been busy with a film project, while Django Nudo enjoyed a trashy 1980s VHS Rewind revival. But this week it is Women-in-Prison (WiP) films: sadistic lesbian wardens, cat fights, strip searches and shower scenes, are just some of the WiP tropes. Born Innocent (1974) Linda Blair's first of three WIP films. The rape scene in the shower with a brush handle was so graphic and disturbing (in a TV movie!) that it was cut from subsequent releases.Women in Chains (1972) Ida Lupino reprised her role as sadistic female warden, which she first played in “Women's Prison” (1955). Here a female parole officer goes undercover to expose the brutality, violence and deaths, only to be mistaken for a permanent prisoner. Great Escape from Women's Prison (1976) Asian WIP film, set during the Japanese occupation of Korea. A mother and daughter both end up in jail. The torture is far from as sadistic as you might have expected.Women of Devil's Island (1962) French prostitutes and female political prisoners on the hellish French penal colony island are caught between pirates and soldiers. Swashbuckling and sexy, scantily-clad gals galore!Caged Women (1970) - This revolting women-in-prison film looks like it was shot in someone's house. The girls are wildcats, the guards are hairy pigs, there's tons of lesbianism and the action is semi-hardcore. Crude and dirty.Girls in Chains (1943) - Proto-WIP film, set in a female juvenile correctional institution. A newly arrived teacher picks a fight with a corrupt wicked female warden.Swamp Women (1956) - Another steamy break-out WIP; it's really just an excuse for the female convicts to wear as little as possible. Kattorna / The Cats (1965) - The closest Sweden ever got to making a women-in-prison movie: cat fights and steaminess in a laundry. The hated female boss has lesbian inclinations. The Lustful Turk (1968) - Women-in-harem-cum-prison, in what purported to be the most expensive adult film of its time. Love Camp 7 (1969) - Nazisploitation story of an all-female POW women-in-prison film. Black Mama White Mama (1973) - Pam Grier leads a breakout from a steamy tropical jail chained to her white co-star.Also The Hot Box (1972) and Jungle Warriors (1984), plus

There are some obvious choices, of course: Freddy, Jason & Michael are represented but we have other perhaps more obscure horror flicks covered as well (if anything, maybe the songs themselves are less known than the movie they appear in). From main title songs, to end title songs, to songs that are genuinely creepy, to songs that are, like, what-the-hell-is-that-song-doing-in-a-horror-movie (looking at you, HALLOWEEN: CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS), from disco songs  to country songs to songs with an extended kazoo solo(!), these songs will have you howling at the moon this Halloween (or any other time of the year). I started this podcast on a whim 4ish years ago when Chris Hasler and I got into a discussion about LHOTP on our podcast, VHS Rewind! - I recall making the statement, "I think Little House on the Prairie is one of the best tv shows to ever air" which triggered the idea of a podcast! It amazed me that there were people who shared my fondness of this strange and sometimes nearly forgotten tv show!  100 episodes later and I am so honored to have such a wonderful group of listeners! 100 Episodes are a lot of hours of discussing Harriet, Caroline, Nellie, Laura, Carrie, pickles, cast iron, Blanke's coffee (it's high quality I hear!) so I would like to thank all of the people who have participated in recording the episodes with me but especially the people who listen, share, comment and discuss!  For those of you who support the podcast, I thank you from a different level as you make it possible to subsidize bloated server fees and things like giveaways, stickers, etc! We ALL thank you! Walnut GroveCast has opened the door to introducing me to people who I now consider real friends, launching new and exciting podcasts as well as other projects and even meeting many of the cast members!   Thank you so much for listening and for supporting the show, the best is yet to come! In this episode Amanda joins me to review, Little Women which originally aired on January 24, 1977!   "Mrs. Oleson rewrites Alcott's "Little Women" to ensure Nellie is the star in Walnut Grove's school play based on the classic story; but shy Ginny Clark steals the show when, taking a lesson from her character, Jo, to try to get her bitter mother to come to the event, she surprises everyone by playing her part to perfection, both on and off the stage." I hope you guys enjoy it! I don't think it will come to many as much of a surprise for my fondness for the tv show, Whiz Kids which originally aired for a very brief 8 months from October 5, 1983 to June 2, 1984. In those 8 months, 18 episodes aired and I loved the show, I loved it so much that even recorded many of the episodes on a now lost BetaMax collection of tapes. When Whiz Kids first aired I was 10, was really into the BASIC programming language, creating my own games, learning about BBS systems using my 300 baud modem for my Commodore 64. I quickly outgrew the Commodore and received an IBM PC which I would use for many years. I owned (and still do) many computers, Apple II, Apple IIC, Apple IIGS, TRS-80, Commodore 128, Atari 400 and 800, etc etc - right now I am writing this on a Windows 10 machine powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 processor with 32gb of RAM, Navi RX 5000 video card, liquid cooling and many other little amazing things that allow me to edit all of my podcasts, video and anything else needed.  Why am I going off on this tangent? Well, because I have been interested in computers since I was in 2nd grade, Whiz Kids came around at a time when I wanted to learn more about what a computer could do and the show absolutely fed my dopey head with fun ideas.  I will always appreciate Whiz Kids and Matthew Labyorteaux's role as Richie Adler. My goal in life at 10 was to own a RALF computer which was a Frankenstein-type of monstrosity with an IMSAI PCS 80/30 computer at the heart but what I really wanted was all those cool blinking lights. I think the desire to own such a complicated machine birthed my love of vintage modular HIFI stereo equipment, recording devices from 1960's and 70's, my collection of vintage synthesizers, guitars, amps and a lot more that my wife will one day try to get me to part with. I only hope I can convince my son to fall in love with these items so they don't end up in a garage sale (my 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom for $65 is a fear). Today, my recording setup is not unlike RALF, I use a Mackie digital mixer, Focusrite Scarlett audio interface, Shure SM7B microphone - I have XLR cables routed everywhere and other wires aplenty and I would never have it any other way! When I fire up my recording computer and get on the line with Chris, Kim, Leah or one of the many people who take the time to discuss all of these wonderful shows with me, I feel RALF is alive in my setup, I might not have the Intel 8080 processor from the IMSAI powering my Mac but deep within the Intel i7's multi-cores is the power behind RALF. I am now officially rambling so I am just going to conclude with this, Whiz Kids left an impression on me and was very important to my development and perhaps it even taught me to WANT things! I will always cherish this light-hearted crime drama about nerdy hackers in southern California. It's a sweet and worthwhile show.

In this very special episode, VHS Rewind! brings to you a very special movie presentation from an alternate galaxy far, far away. One of the most fascinating by-products of the phenomenal success of STAR WARS was the proliferation of music knock-offs based on, or inspired by, the film, the film’s music, its characters, or even just the space setting. Naturally, Disco tracks were most prominent (it was 1977, after all), but a little digging uncovers other genres that wanted to cash in on that STAR WARS ka-ching (funk, R&B, country!) and a few genres that we at VHS Rewind cannot categorize). So we have created this alternate presentation of the STAR WARS story for your listening pleasure: we have the narrative of the plot (courtesy of a vintage read-along book – like BEATLEMANIA, an incredible simulation of your favorite characters) and cherry-picked a soundtrack comprised of these music knock-off tracks. Prepare yourself for a hilarious, 70mm, Dolby stereo movie going experience.
