June's bustin' out all over, and we're bustin' out one last classic episode before we get back to some new episodes coming later this month. And since June is Pride Month and the month of the Tony Awards, we're serving up a "two birds, one stone" situation by reairing an episode that falls squarely in both categories: La Cage aux Folles!~~~In honor of pride month, this week is a special episode focused on the franchise that began life as a landmark French boulevard stage comedy, and was then adapted into acclaimed films and musical. And even though the love story at the center of the story was between two men, it has captured the hearts of audiences from all sexual orientations. It also answers the age old question: what happens when you put the composer of Hello Dolly!, the director of West Side Story, and Edna Turnlad in a room together? The answer: Broadway magic.Rob teaches Ray about the history of Jean Poiret's play La Cage Aux Folles and its many adaptations; how competing producers (including ThWAT favorite Allan Carr) fought to secure the chance to both film and musicalize La Cage; Jerry Herman's hummable, Tony-winning score and the anthem it provided the gay rights movement; Nathan Lane's breakout movie performance; and all the ways in which this property has been and continues to be celebrated by audiences across the world.

After The French Connection and The Exorcist, William Friedkin needed something big. Something bold. Something daring. And when someone brought him the novel Cruising he found a property that more than fit the bill. Unfortuantely, it also ended up being a quagmire of political controversy and ambiguous plot lines that modern audiences are still trying to figure out. Rob teachers Ray about the origins of the movie Cruising, including the original novel; what made William Friedkin decide to set his adaptaion within the world of 1980s BDSM gay clubs; how Friedkin's commitment to authenticity resulted in such graphic scenes that he was forced to leave chunk of the movie on the cutting room floor; the severe backlash this movie faced from gay rights advocates across the country who; James Franco's take on the whole thing; and how this movie, despite all its issues, continues to fascinate audiences as they ask themselves: is Cruising deliberately provocative and intricate, or just terrible? In 2019, music writer Randy Fox discovered a long-forgotten nugget of info - sixteen years before Lucy's opened its doors at 1707 Church Street in Nashville it was home to another record store called Buckley's. Randy has an insatiable curiosity and an unbridled enthusiasm for music and history, so this story has lots of twists and turns. It starts in Kentucky and his discovery of the Sex Pistols and the Ramones in college, zigs into the history of mid-20th century radio and record shops, and zags to the use of urban planning as a tool for white supremacy. Chock full. Enjoy! Randy Fox grew up in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky and now lives in Nashville, Tennessee. Currently managing editor of The Madisonian and an Editor-at-Large for The East Nashvillian, his writing has also appeared in Vintage Rock, Country Music, Record Collector, Journal of Country Music, Nashville Scene and many other publications. Jon Davis to get a sneak preview of what's to come when they present at our 69th Annual Conference of Members happening November 19-21 in Monterey.   Lt. Colonel Grossman, who will be presenting on November 19 from 1-4 p.m., will provide a recipe for ensuring that your mind is mentally prepared for combat encounters, and the life after. Titled The Bulletproof Mind, Colonel Grossman's discussion presents various topics such as how violence in our society has become prevalent, the responsibility of on and off-duty cops, how to prepare for and deal with the stress of violent encounters, and the role that law enforcement plays in serving as the protectors to those around them.   Sgt. Davis, who will be presenting on November 20 from 1-4 p.m., will be discussing his topic titled Legally Justified; But was it Avoidable? This discussion analyzes dozens of recent use of force videos and focuses on the totality of the interaction. Attendees will dissect the behavior of the offender and more importantly, the thoughts and behavioral processes of the officer(s) involved.   Click Here to learn more about the upcoming speakers and our 69th Annual Conference of Members in Monterey!   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   About Lt. It's that time once again: the annual all-music Halloween episode! Naturally, we prefer that listeners jump right in but maybe we can give you some SNEAK PREVIEWS to scare up your interest: this Halloween episode will be a little different as we spend time AT THE MOVIES. This episode will focus on songs (yes, with vocals) from horror flicks from the 1980s (maybe one from the 1990s). There are some obvious choices, of course: Freddy, Jason & Michael are represented but we have other perhaps more obscure horror flicks covered as well (if anything, maybe the songs themselves are less known than the movie they appear in). From main title songs, to end title songs, to songs that are genuinely creepy, to songs that are, like, what-the-hell-is-that-song-doing-in-a-horror-movie (looking at you, HALLOWEEN: CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS), from disco songs  to country songs to songs with an extended kazoo solo(!), these songs will have you howling at the moon this Halloween (or any other time of the year). So please take a listen and leave a comment letting us know what you think. We at VHS Rewind wish everyone a very safe and happy Halloween season.
