In this episode, we commemorate Al Nakba for the 77th year. We trace the story of one Palestinian family displaced from the al-Baqa‘a neighborhood in West Jerusalem during the 1948 Nakba. From Victoria's memories of fleeing her rose-filled home to her grandson Majdi's search for what was lost, we explore how memory, loss, and resilience are passed down through generations. Through personal testimony and historical context, this episode reflects on what it means to reclaim narratives, and why Palestinians continue to remember, resist, and return.Thank you for tuning into This is Palestine, the official podcast of The IMEU! Psalm 83 is a Prophetic Prayer describing by name a confederacy of nations, which surround her, who all want to destroy Israel in the end-times. Derek and Tim explain how this Prophecy has been fulfilled in detail in the wars that Israel has faced since her rebirth in 1948, including the present Israel war with Hamas. The Psalm is an inspired prayer that God would give Israel military victory, as in her ancient victories by Gideon and Deborah, with the help of God. God has answered this prayer again and again by giving Israel victory against her enemies, even when it was against all odds. This prayer also gives a blueprint for how we should pray in the present situation. The stated purpose of this victory is to glorify the Name of the true God, the God of the Bible, the God of Israel, so that Israel's enemies, who worship and trust in a false god, may repent and trust in the true God instead, and so be saved.
After going “Psycho” for Alfred Hitchcock a while back (episode 140, but who's counting?) we revisit another of his classics, 1948's Rope. Upon release, Rope basically hanged itself with audiences and critics due to its deep, dark premise. Two men of questionable sexual orientation strangle the living daylights out of their friend with a … well, you know … just to do it. Heavy handed philosophies, psychological games, and one sharp Jimmy Stewart later, the film stiffed at the box office. But now, over seventy years after its release, is it now simply a gay old time? The Old Roommates dive into the pate and discuss the thriller through their middle-aged lens. Join them for this lively discussion.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. In the Olivet Discourse Jesus referred to the Parable of the Fig Tree, and said the appearance of the Fig Tree bearing leaves (but not fruit) was the major sign of the end-times, with the 2nd Coming to establish His Kingdom taking place within a man's lifetime of this event (Matthew 24:32-35, Luke 21:29-32). By studying the origin of the Parable of the Fig-Tree in Luke 13:6-9, Derek shows the Fig Tree is the nation of Israel planted in her land, but because she bore no fruit of faith (leaves only) and rejected Christ when He came to her, she was cut off spiritually in AD 33, 6 months after the Cross (Acts 7), and cut down and removed from her land (AD 70). Later, Jesus acted this out prophetically when He cursed a Fig Tree for not bearing fruit (Mark 11:12-21). The very same day that the disciples witnessed that the Tree had withered up from its roots, and at the very same location (the Mount of Olives), Jesus gave the Olivet Discourse in which He declared that the Fig Tree would rise again in the end-times as the major sign that the 2nd Coming was near (Matthew 24:32-35, Luke 21:29-32), for Israel must be re-established as a Nation in her Land in order for the end-time prophecies to be fulfilled – the stage must be set for the final scene to take place. Moreover, the Parable of the Fig Tree predicts Israel will initially be regathered in unbelief (leaves only), which was fulfilled in 1948, and affirms that this is the necessary prelude to her bearing fruit (faith), for all Israel will be saved (Romans 11:26).

The episode begins with a festive yet cautionary tone, as the host assesses the complex emotions that accompany the transition from one year to another, particularly around New Year's Eve. The thematic focus is on celebration but intertwined with elements of dread, as the host introduces the narrative of "New Year's Nightmare." This dark tale explores themes of identity, memory, and the consequences of one's actions, all set against the backdrop of a pivotal moment in time. The story unfolds in a lively locale, Club Tropicana, where characters Chris and Judy are entwined in a tumultuous relationship exacerbated by Chris's struggles with alcoholism. The tension reaches a boiling point as Judy confronts Chris, declaring her decision to leave him due to his ongoing substance abuse. In a moment of desperation, Chris chooses to drown his sorrows in another drink, setting in motion a cascade of events that spirals into chaos. He laughs off Judy's earnest concerns, marking the distinct rift between their desires and realities. As midnight on New Year's Eve approaches, Chris finds himself mysteriously transported to a different place and time, awakening in an unfamiliar apartment next to a woman named Blanche. Confusion reigns as he grapples with his identity, believing himself to be Chris Andrews, only to be told he is actually Charles Arnold—a man who suffered a life-altering accident leading to amnesia. The narrative deftly weaves the trauma of memory loss with the eerie ambiance of New Year's Eve, heightening the atmosphere of suspense. As Chris's story unfolds, the listener witnesses his struggle to reconcile his past with the present, while the date of January 1, 1948, looms ominously. The tale's complexity thickens as Chris learns that he has been living another life, married to Blanche, and working a mundane insurance job. The listener observes Chris's internal conflict as memories of Judy and his former life begin to resurface, complicating his feelings toward Blanche. The haunting presence of Judy becomes a specter that looms over Chris, pushing the narrative toward a poignant examination of love, memory, and identity.A pivotal turning point arises when Chris encounters Judy again, igniting dormant feelings he believed to be buried. Faced with the harsh reality of his new life, Chris grapples with his commitment to Blanche while contending with the passion he still holds for Judy. The tension between the three characters escalates, allowing for a deep exploration of human emotions and relationships. Chris's internal struggle reflects a broader commentary on love's complexities and the impact of choices made in fleeting moments. The narrative spirals into darker territory as jealousy and desperation unfold. Chris begins to contemplate a drastic decision, seeing no other escape from his predicaments. The revelation of Blanche's tragic death at his hands serves as the climactic moment of the episode, a harrowing twist that encapsulates the story's exploration of guilt, loss, and the inexorable pull of the past.Ultimately, the episode concludes with Chris awakening once more in a hospital, signifying the cyclical nature of memory and identity. This ending leaves the listener pondering the implications of Chris's experiences as the host interjects thoughtful reflections on fate, identity, and the enigmatic threads that intertwine past and present. Through this multifaceted narrative, the episode masterfully highlights the dark edges of human psyche while maintaining the thematic resonance of New Year's introspection and renewal. With a final warning to the audience, the host closes the tale on a somber yet reflective note, inviting listeners to contemplate their own lives as they step into a new year filled with unknown prospects, reiterating the precarious balance between joy and despair that defines the human experience. The combination of thrilling storytelling and atmospheric sound design brings the listener to the edge of their seat, making it a compelling listen that resonates long after the episode concludes.
Picture this: a quiet night in Bethlehem, a humble manger, and the miraculous birth of Jesus, a tale told for centuries. Join me as we pause our journey through 2 Corinthians to revisit the Christmas story's profound beauty. This special episode invites you to reflect on the timeless narratives from Luke 2 and Matthew 2, where shepherds receive the angelic announcement of Christ's birth, and Wise Men embark on a determined quest to worship the newborn King, despite King Herod's ominous intentions. With a nod to the cherished Charlie Brown Christmas special, we cherish the traditional King James Version's phrasing, allowing these stories to echo with their original resonance. As we celebrate this season of hope, let's channel the spirit of unity and gratitude inspired by President Harry S. Truman's 1948 Christmas address. Truman's words remind us of the strength found in family and community amid trying times. In a world often striving to separate faith from daily life, we explore how the enduring promise of eternal life with Christ can anchor us in peace and joy. This episode is a heartfelt prayer for nations, families, and marriages, extending our wishes of blessings and Merry Christmas to all, with a hope to reconnect soon and continue spreading goodwill.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

Bible Prophecy Under the Microscope-Episode 13 Gary discusses a popular interpretation by modern prophecy writers and pastors about Israel being the "fig tree" spoken of by Jesus in the NT. Usually, it is interpreted as Israel "becoming a nation again" in 1948. Unfortunately for them, the math, the biblical data, and Jesus' own words do not confirm this strained interpretation. Recently the kids and I watched the film 'A house in Jerusalem' by filmmaker Muayad Elayyan who happens to be a far cousin and friend of my husband Tariq. Although he told me that he had a small role as an extra in this film, which he's had in all Muayad's films, I did NOT recognize him. Turns out the policeman in the scene when Rebecca wanders off from the summer school activity in Jerusalem and ends up with the Palestinian puppeteer, is MY husband!! We only realized at the end of the film when we saw his name in the end credits, that we had missed out on recognizing him. It was a hilarious moment when we played it again and then figured out the policeman was Tariq!Muayad visits Singer Cafe regularly so it wasn't hard to catch him for a podcast interview. After his earlier films: 'The reports on Sarah and Saleem' and 'Love Theft and Other Entanglements' this film 'A House in Jerusalem' is the latest. It came out in January 2023 and it is still being shown at film festivals around the world. In this film a British Jewish girl named Rebecca comes with her father to Jerusalem after her mother has died in a tragic car accident. Her grandfather has a house in West Jerusalem where they can live. They are both overwhelmed with the trauma of losing the mother, but the father is trying to make things work in their new environment. Rebecca explores the garden, finds an old well, manages to open it and finds a traditional rag doll in the well. This leads her to connect with the ghost of the young Palestinian girl Rasha. What follows is the story of what happened to this girl Rasha during the 1948 Nakba when the family was forcibly displaced from their home.In the podcast interview with Muayad we touch on many aspects of the film and on Muayad's personal family history. His both grandparents were displaced from their homes. The theme of intergenerational trauma both on an individual level as well as on the collective level are very present in the film.Muayad could never have imagined that his film would come out just months before the 7th of October and before the ethnic cleansing campaign in the Gaza strip. "There are many parallels to what happened in 1948 and what is happening in Gaza."If you want to follow up with news of screenings of the film then this is the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ahouseinjerusalem Connect to Stories from Palestine on social media, sign up for the newsletter, read more about traveling to Palestine and if you can, please support the podcast on Ko-fi. Nowadays there's an intense interest and often serious concern among many Christians in America about Israel…and, wow, is that pretty understandable given the voluminous news reports about Hamas, terrorism, Israel, wars, and widespread antisemitism! Some are convinced this has much to do with the end times. So, what's your “Biblical worldview” about God's expectations of the Christian's focus in the here-and-now? Is it properly tipping more to geopolitics? Or is it properly weighted more to the Great Commission? Join Kevin as we work through some thorny issues concerning the kingdoms of this world, the opportunities for the Kingdom of God, and us as 21st century believers! // Download this episode's Application & Action questions and PDF transcript at whitestone.org.
The famous image of a victorious Harry Truman holding up a newspaper headlined “Dewey defeats Truman” is clear evidence that the 1948 Presidential election did not turn out the way many people had expected. That April, Truman's approval rating had sunk to 37%, causing even many in his party to consider dumping him from the ballot. That summer, a rebellion by southern Democrats led by South Carolina segregationist Strom Thurmond promised to deny Truman electoral votes that his Democratic predecessors could have counted on for a century. Yet, despite all this, Truman didn't just win, he won big- finishing 4.5 points and 114 electoral votes ahead of Dewey. How did Truman manage to turn it all around in six months? Who was Thomas E. Dewey and why couldn't he deliver a win with the wind blowing so hard at his back? And what did southern democrats hope they'd get by giving 39 electoral votes to Strom Thurmond even when he had no chance of winning the national election? Let's find out. In the fourth installment of our Third Party Elections Series, we talk the election of 1948 w/ Jefferson Cowie. Dr. Jefferson Cowie is James G. Stahlman Professor of History at Vanderbilt University. His most recent book, Freedom's Dominion, A Saga of White Resistance to Federal Power (Basic Books) was awarded the 20203 Pulitzer Prize in History. You can hear Jeff discussing Freedom's Dominion in RTN #255 and his other episodes on the 1970s (#115) and The New Deal and its Legacy (#24). This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher.

PART 2 of 2 For more than 30 years of ‘on again-off again' peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, many Israelis, and certainly most interested observers in the West, looked to the 1967 Six-Day War as the root cause of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. If only we could reverse the results of that defensive war in which Israel conquered the West Bank and Gaza, the problem would be solved, so the narrative goes. And this served as the basis for all peace talks and agreements that have taken place since. But, to anyone willing to listen, the story that Palestinian leaders were telling had nothing to do with 1967, and everything to do with 1948. And the story they tell goes something like this: ‘In the 1940s Jews escaped the Nazis, fled Europe, colonized Palestine, and unprovoked - ethnically cleansed the Arabs. A textbook case of settler colonialism.' They have managed to propagate this false narrative throughout much of Western society, where millions are mindlessly chanting those six words - ‘from the river to the sea.' So while we never thought we'd need to re-litigate this topic, we invited to the podcast (for a special two-part discussion) one of the quintessential historians of 1948 - Benny Morris. Professor Morris has dedicated his entire career to studying and writing about the war of 1948, the circumstances that led to it and its aftermath - i.e The Palestinian Refugee Problem. Morris's first book was “The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947-1949”. His other books include: “1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War”, and “Righteous Victims: A History of the Zionist-Arab Conflict, 1881-2001”. He completed his undergraduate studies in history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and received a doctorate in modern European history from the University of Cambridge. Today we look back at the history of Palestinian violence against the Jews in Israel (and in the pre-state Yishuv) -- from the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1917 through the myriad efforts to establish a Palestinian Arab State alongside a Jewish State in the 1930s and the 40s. In our discussion today, we follow this pattern all the way through the Second Intifada in the early 2000s, and now today. Each time a war or wave of terror is launched, and Israel perseveres, the Palestinian leadership tries to dictate the terms of what comes next, as though they were the victors in this defensive war, rather than the aggressors and the defeated. Why? And are we seeing that same mindset play out right now? Did Hamas actually think it would defeat Israel with this attack, and Israel would fold to its demands, or possibly even just disappear? To help us understand this important history, Dr. Einat Wilf joins us. Einat was born and raised in Israel. She was an Intelligence Officer in the IDF. She has worked for McKinsey. She was Foreign Policy Advisor to Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres and an advisor to Yossi Beilin, who was Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Wilf was a member of the Israeli Parliament (the Knesset) in the early 2010s, where she served as Chair of the Education Committee and Member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. She has a BA from Harvard, an MBA from INSEAD in France, and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Cambridge. She was a Visiting Professor at Georgetown University and is a lecturer at Reichman University in Israel. Einat is the author of seven books that explore key issues in Israeli society. “We Should All Be Zionists“, published in 2022, brings together her essays from the past four years on Israel, Zionism and the path to peace; and she co-authored “The War of Return: How Western Indulgence of the Palestinian Dream Has Obstructed the Path to Peace”, which was published in 2020.

Show NotesWe deal with the current conflict in Israel and Gaza by looking at the influence of religion, in the minds of the Israeli leaders & the settlers taking land in the West Bank and also in the minds of the Evangelical Zionist backers in the UK and US. The UK evangelical influence is more of historical interest but the US is very current and is influencing events now. Today on the 5: Once again the fantastic Criterion Channel has come through with an older film that I enjoyed immensely. They Live By Night was a recently added to a collection titled Holiday Noir, and while it certainly does feature Christmas as part of the story this is a movie that is great whenever you watch it.

Part Two of Two. Gary is interviewed by Paul Edward Stevenson on the Last Man Standing radio show about Israel, Hamas, and popular prophecy. Most people who believe that the events in Gaza right now are fulfilling Bible prophecy have no idea what their system actually says about what awaits Israel in the "end times."

Today's war between Israel and Hamas has its origins in the unresolved problems caused by the events of 1948. The year that witnessed the creation of an independent Jewish state in the former British mandate of Palestine, is known by Palestinians as the nakba, or catastrophe. Internecine violence intensified in 1947 as the U.N. weighed partitioning Palestine into two independent states, one Jewish and one Arab. Then five neighboring Arab countries invaded the new state of Israel immediately after David Ben-Gurion declared independence on May 14, 1948. In all, approximately 750,000 Arabs fled or were driven from their homes by Jewish forces. Many fled to Gaza and were forbidden from returning to their homeland after the war, turning them into permanent refugees. In this episode, Middle East expert Ian Lustick of the University of Pennsylvania discusses the throughline from 1948 to 2023.
The conflict in Israel and Palestine has been going on since even before the state of Israel was declared in 1948. This episode explores the complicated history of Israel and Palestine, charting the ancient history of the temples in Jerusalem, to the Crusades, to the settlement of the land by Arabs almost 1,000 years ago, and to the more recent wars of 1948, 1967, the Intifadas, and the state of the conflict in present day.
