One of the most common questions I'm asked is about the gear needed to begin podcasting. I will honestly admit that it's a difficult decision when you're just starting because you want reliable equipment that does a great job, but you are also hesitant to break the bank for it. As you progress, several factors complicate the choices of gear, such as how you conduct guest interviews and whether you have a co-host. In today's session, I'm walking you through four common podcasting scenarios and the gear I recommend for each. All of this information is compiled in the Buying Guide found inside our Healthcasters course. You'll Learn:My gear setup as I started the STC podcast in 2015 with a teeny, tiny budgetMy advice for beginning podcasters: “Don't go out and purchase all the gear I mention, but go with the basics as you focus on building and honing your storytelling and interviewing skills.”Four podcasting scenarios and the recommended equipment:1- A single host with solo episodes and guest interviews via the Internet.I recommend the Samsung Q2U dynamic mic, Koolertron mic shock mount, OnStage foam windscreen, pop filter, mic stand, and Rode PSA mic arm.2- A single host who interviews guests in person. In addition to the basic equipment in Scenario #1, I recommend a 2-3 camera set-up (very expensive!), Calendly to coordinate interviews, 2 tabletop stands/mic arms, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for recording, and XLR cables.3- Co-hosts who connect and interview guests via the Internet.I recommend the basic equipment in Scenario #1 for EACH co-host, along with a recording platform, like Zoom or Ecamm Live.4- Co-hosts who get together in-person to interview guests in person. This is a dream set-up, but it is very expensive and complicated. I recommend the basic equipment in Scenario #1 for EACH co-host and guest (Yes, that is at least three of everything!), along with the Rodecaster Pro (the Rodecaster Pro II or Pro Mini), 32 GB SD card, and XLR cables. My advice: “Start with a lean setup. My current gear costs around $5000, but I didn't upgrade for several years when I started out.”Check out the free workshop, Using Podcasting to Grow Your Business.Resources:Want to launch your podcast?Check out our free podcasting workshop for therapists (and therapists turned coaches and consultants)https://sellingthecouch.com/podcastingworshopWant to launch your online course? Please check out our free 7-Day Course Creator Starter Kit For Therapists: https://sellingthecouch.com/coursekitMentioned in this episode:Check Out PsycCareers! If you're a psychology professional who is ready to take the next step in their career, check out PsycCareers, the American Psychological Association Services, Inc's career center. Please check out our free 7-Day Course Creator Starter Kit For Therapists: https://sellingthecouch.com/coursekitMentioned in this episode:Thrizer Thrizer can help private pay therapists transform out-of-network therapy into an in-network experience to help you attract and retain private pay clients! Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we’re going to talk about podcast equipment for recording multiple people, locally. If getting people in the same room together is the key for your podcast, then there are a few different options out there. On the previous 2 episodes, we’ve mentioned the Samson Q2U mic and the Zoom PodTrak P4 podcast recorder. Get yourself a PodTrak P4 and then a Q2U for each person you’ll be recording, and you’ll have a brilliant set up for only a few hundred dollars. With the PodTrak P4 you don’t need a computer as it records independently. If you’d prefer to record into a computer, though, then you could get a USB audio interface and plug your mics into that. Our favourite USB audio interface is the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, but be mindful that this only runs 2 mics at any one time. A couple of the more high-end options if you have a bit of budget behind you are the Zoom H6 digital recorder, and the Rodecaster Pro podcast recorder. These are premium options and if you pair them with mics like the Rode Procaster or Shure SM7B then you’ll have a better setup than 99% of other podcasters out there. Of course, there’s no need to spend a fortune on your podcasting kit, so for most folks, a handful of Samson Q2Us running into a Zoom PodTrak P4 will be more than good enough. For a more detailed look at choosing the right kit for you and your podcast, go to http://ThePodcastHost.com/equipment

Mixers and audio interfaces have much in common with the podcast recorders mentioned on our last episode. One crucial difference is that these are less likely to work as standalone devices, and will need other gear to make them work (typically, mics and a computer). A mixer or audio interface is an excellent tool if you prefer to use podcast recording software. Our favourite interfaces are the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the PreSonus Audiobox USB 96. On the mixer front, Dev was highly impressed by the Boss Gigcaster 5 and 8 recently, too. Also Mentioned in This Episode How to set up a Mix-Minus (blast from the past!) 180 Unbiased Review of Focusrite Vocaster Two: Do Podcasters Need It?

Just the Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2023 8:32

In this episode I share my honest opinion of the Focusrite Vocaster Two and help you determine if it's the right audio interface for your podcast needs.   First, let me clarify that I bought this equipment with my own money and was not given it for free. I was hesitant to buy it because my previous interface, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, had just stopped working. However, I decided to give Focusrite another shot, and I'm glad I did.   The Vocaster Two is an audio interface that you plug your XLR mic into, and then connect to your computer via USB. It's important to note that it's not compatible with USB mics.   If you have an XLR mic, want an interface that doesn't require a lot of extra equipment, and like the convenience of the automated 'gain set' feature and EQ enhancement, then this interface is perfect for you. It's also great for co-hosts or in-person guests.   However, if you're a solo podcaster or never interview people in person, then you may not need the Vocaster Two.   I bought this interface for its two inputs, which is useful when my wife and I coach our clients together and don't want to share a mic. It's also lightweight, making it ideal for podcasting on the go.   What I love about the Vocaster Two is its easy-to-read settings, auto-gain and EQ enhancement pre-sets, separate controls for each host or guest, and the ability to use it as your studio console or for video. You can even connect it to your phone for call-in guests.   The cons are the learning curve with the software, the lack of notches and numbers on the knobs, and the inability to accommodate a USB mic. However, once you get used to the interface, these cons become less of an issue.   Overall, the Vocaster Two is a fantastic podcast tool that's worth its weight in your suitcase. It delivers high-quality audio without complicating your production process or reducing your beach time.   Here is the Focusrite Vocaster Two on Amazon.   Check out my RESOURCES for all the equipment I use.   Book your FREE 15-Minute Podcast Coaching Call https://calendly.com/timwohlberg

Looking for a content marketing boost for your business? Podcasting is more popular than ever, and more and more listeners are discovering new favorite shows. I love podcasting because it gives you all the SEO benefits of a blog, without requiring stellar writing skills (perfect for the grammatically challenged, in other words). Plus, podcasts offer a level of “know, like, and trust” that you just can't get with written content alone. After all, a podcast feels more like a conversation and less like reading a news article. Even email marketing (which you know I love) doesn't offer the same level of connection a podcast can. But podcasts require a bit more intention and planning than a blog does. For one thing, there's additional technology to consider, distribution channels to navigate, file hosting to worry about, and that's before you ever record your first episode. Today I'm sharing how I started my podcast, some mistakes I made along the way (and what I think I got right), plus I have a plan you can follow if you're interested in starting your own show. Prefer a transcript? Here you go! What you'll learn in this episode: How I decided on the format for my podcast Why I wanted to have loads of episode ideas before starting What I'd do differently if I were starting a podcast today Why it's important to have good audio quality (but it doesn't have to be perfect) My personal recording and publishing schedule Eight steps to follow to launch your own show Resources mentioned: Amy Porterfield's Online Marketing Made Easy is one of my favorite shows. I never miss an episode. The Life Coach School with Brooke Castillo isn't just for life coaches. There's plenty of savvy business and life advice, too. Michael Hyatt's Lead to Win is for anyone who wants to be a better business leader. The Membership Geeks podcast is all about starting and running an online membership. AudioTechnica ATR 2100 is the microphone I use and recommend. Focusrite Scarlett audio interface offers a slightly better quality than a simple USB connection will. Libsyn is the media host I use for the podcast. Zoom is useful for interview shows. Christina Lemmy set up the tech side for me. Otter.ai is a good choice for automated transcripts. Noota.io is the transcript tool we use now. Descript looks interesting, but I haven't tried it yet. How to Use Time Blocking to Get Stuff Done details the strategy I've been using for years to stay on top of my commitments. Igor Mihajlović Bucin does my podcast editing.

Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we're going to talk about podcast equipment for recording multiple people, locally. If getting people in the same room together is the key for your podcast, then there are a few different options out there. On the previous 2 episodes, we've mentioned the Samson Q2U mic and the Zoom PodTrak P4 podcast recorder. Get yourself a PodTrak P4 and then a Q2U for each person you'll be recording, and you'll have a brilliant set up for only a few hundred dollars. With the PodTrak P4 you don't need a computer as it records independently. If you'd prefer to record into a computer, though, then you could get a USB audio interface and plug your mics into that. These are premium options and if you pair them with mics like the Rode Procaster or Shure SM7B then you'll have a better setup than 99% of other podcasters out there. Of course, there's no need to spend a fortune on your podcasting kit, so for most folks, a handful of Samson Q2Us running into a Zoom PodTrak P4 will be more than good enough. For a more detailed look at choosing the right kit for you and your podcast, go to http://ThePodcastHost.com/equipment

In my latest podcast episode, I show you an easy way to play the Pink Panther Theme on guitar. This song makes use of the pentatonic scale, blues scale, minor scale, and harmonic minor scale. There's also good use of chromatic half-step movement and a tritone substitution. I also discuss my new Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 USB Audio Interface (Gen 3) and answer a question about when to change guitar strings. ***

Most mics can be plug and play for podcasting, but you do need a user guide before you make that investment and to even know how to use it properly for optimal sound. In this episode, let's dive into some general ideas on mic techniques, which mics I would recommend and why, to ultimately have you sound optimal with the mic you're using! Resources mentioned in the episode: If you're in Canada, check out your local Long & McQuade store to find your podcast equipment!  https://www.long-mcquade.com/  If you're in the U.S., you can buy your podcasting gear at your local Guitar Center or online at Sweetwater. https://www.guitarcenter.com/  https://www.sweetwater.com/  My Top 3 mic recommendations are:  (1) Samson Q2U, (2) Shure MV7 (Shure SM7B is the big brother mic), (3) Shure SM58 https://www.long-mcquade.com/7987/Pro-Audio---Recording/Microphones/Samson/Q2U-Recording-and-Podcasting-Pack.htm  https://www.long-mcquade.com/211304/Pro-Audio---Recording/Microphones/Shure/MV7-XLR-USB-Dynamic-Podcasting-Microphone---Black.htm  https://www.long-mcquade.com/564/Pro-Audio---Recording/Microphones/Shure/SM7B-Large-Diaphragm-Cardioid-Dynamic-Microphone.htm  https://www.long-mcquade.com/1093/Pro-Audio---Recording/Microphones/Shure/SM58-Unidirectional-Dynamic-Mic.htm Looking for an interface?
