In this episode, we're bypassing the randomizer for a VERY long-awaited Guest's Choice episode, in which our good friend David Ganssle FINALLY takes his Guest's Choice option out of his back pocket after four-and-a-half years and slaps it in front of our eyeballs, but not before cutting eyeholes in it to shield our identities. That's right, Doggans is making us watch a 1958 "clip show" movie compiled from the first thirteen episodes of Disney's hit 1950s ABC black-and-white primetime series about that legendary world-famous dashing Spanish Californian outlaw played by the dad from Lost In Space who outfoxes tyrannical dictators, swashes buckles while buckling his swashes, and carves a Z with his blade. No one knows what that Z stands for, but perhaps someday our top scientists will figure it out. In Episode 6, we dive into two pivotal battles in the First Barbary War: Tripoli and Derne. It starts with  Stephen Decatur's dramatic assault on Tripoli Harbor in August 1804, where he led American gunboats against a larger Tripolitanian fleet, avenging his brother's death in single combat and shelling the city. Commodore Preble's daring attempts to destroy Tripoli's defenses are followed by the tragic loss of the USS Intrepid crew.  We then move to William Eaton's ambitious overland march with a small band of Marines and mercenaries across the Libyan desert to Derne. Facing hunger, mutiny, and harsh terrain, Eaton's force managed to surprise Derne's defenders, capturing the city in America's first coordinated land-sea assault. Despite Eaton's victory, peace talks led by Tobias Lear overshadowed Eaton's campaign, forcing a strategic withdrawal that left Hamet Karamanli, Eaton's ally, without power. Eaton returned home as a hero, but haunted by the treaty's outcome. This episode captures the challenges of America's first overseas conflict and the complicated peace that followed. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back to The Overlooked Dark Knight, the podcast that shines a light on Batman stories hardly anyone talks about! This time out Andy and Mike take a look at a pair of Batman Elseworlds stories! Elseworlds is back as an imprint and the guys thought it would be fun to look at two of those stories that have flown under the radar. First up is the 2001 Ed Brubaker/Sean Phillips special called Batman: Gotham Noir. Andy and Mike will now allow you, dear reader/listener, a moment to get over the shock that Andy chose an Ed Brubaker/Sean Phillips comic book to talk about. It is a surprise and the guys realize you might need some time to process this information. ... Are we good? Batman: Gotham Noir is a period piece with Jim Gordon taking center stage as a hard boiled private investigator hired to protect someone and then having to figure out why his charge was murdered. This is a fairly non-spoilery discussion as Andy wants people to read this one shot, but there's still a lot to be said about the book. Then they look at Mike's pick, which was Batman: Master of the Future. This special was the direct sequel to Batman: Gotham By Gaslight and has that version of Batman fighting against the Master of the Future and this one has it all. Bare knuckled fighting! Swashbuckling action! Political intrigue! Romance! Dirigibles! It was steampunk before steampunk became a thing in popular culture! Plus...Andy talks about the then recent purchase of the novelization to Batman The Movie from 1966 leading to a short conversation on Batman in prose form. Andy and Mike want your feedback on this episode so they can read it on an upcoming show!  You even have options in how you leave your feedback.  The most direct way is to leave a comment right here on the site.  You can also send all questions, concerns, fears and trepidations to overlookeddarkknight@gmail.com.  Then there' the Facebook page, where you can also leave a Batman related question for Andy and Mike to answer at the beginning of the show.  If you talk about this show on the social medias please include a #overlookeddk so the guys know where to find it. The opening and closing theme for the show is Superhero Intro by Stringer Bell and taken from the royalty free site Pixma Bay. Next Time: Andy and Mike begin a two-part series looking at Batman in prose form!

Toronto film critic Nathalie Atkinson joins Alex Heeney to discuss their latest obsession -- Amazon Prime's swashbuckling fantasy series, My Lady Jane -- and why we can't stop thinking about it. From husbands that are sometimes horses, to intimacy coordination by Ita O'Brien (Normal People), to an incredible cast (Edward Bluemel!), the show is a whole lot of fun with impressive craft behind it. The limited series reimagines the story of Lady Jane Grey, the Tudor Queen who, at age 16, was queen for nine days. The show asks, what could have happened if Lady Jane lasted a little bit longer, had a whole lot of gumption, and also, uh…what if a bunch of people, named Ethians, could also transform into animals? The show is part romance, part adventure, part YA coming-of-ager, with an incredible supporting cast. >> Subscribe to our FREE newsletter for updates on the best new under-the-radar films and streaming theatre productions

Sebastien de Castell had just finished a degree in Archaeology when he started work on his first dig. Four hours later he realized how much he actually hated archaeology and left to pursue a very focused career as a musician, ombudsman, interaction designer, fight choreographer, teacher, project manager, actor, and product strategist. His only defence against the charge of unbridled dilettantism is that he genuinely likes doing these things and that, in one way or another, each of these fields plays a role in his writing. He sternly resists the accusation of being a Renaissance Man in the hopes that more people will label him that way. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daniel-lucas66/message

Avast Ye Harties! Yar! This week be the inaugural episode of a New Streamer/Academic Guru season. Join us as we set sail with a bang and embark on an adventure with the famous and controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Formerly of the Young Turks, Hasan has carved out a niche as a popular left-wing commentator. He is sometimes described as representing a new wave of political communicators who leverage social media and live streaming to reach new audiences, particularly disengaged younger viewers. But how does he fare in these Decoding waters? We take a look at his recent interview with Rashed Al-Haddad, a dashing Yemeni teenager (nicknamed Tim Houthi Chalamet), who recently found himself streaming video on an international transport ship hijacked by Houthi militants. But fear not! Hasan addresses this sensitive topic and the complex geopolitical issues involved with due diligence and care. Moreover, Rashed reports that all of the kidnapped crew are having a grand old time in Yemen! They are simply vibing with their captors, chewing khat, and have fully embraced the honourable Houthi perspective. The Houthis' official slogan, "God is the Greatest, Death to America, Death to Israel, A Curse Upon the Jews, Victory to Islam", and reports of severe human rights abuses in their territory, might still give one pause... but as Hasan explains—drawing on his deep political and psychological insights—the Houthis are just like the heroic Straw Hat pirates in the popular anime One Piece! So with that settled, we can focus on the more important questions like what videogames Rashed likes, if he has ever heard of Mr. Beast, whether he's eaten 'Western' food, what cartoons he watched growing up, and if there are KFCs in Yemen? Truly, this is a conversation for the ages, and Hasan is just the man for the job.So join us for this week's episode as we ponder whether combining influencer culture with political analysis was a wise move and if there are any possible contradictions or minor ideological skews in Hasan's content.Links- Hasan Interviews Viral 'Hot Yemeni TikTok Pirate' | Hasanabi Reacts- Atlantic article about the Houthis and the situation in Yemen- AP article on the crew of the hijacked 'Galaxy Leader' ship and their ability to contact their families- Amnesty article on Houthi sentencing of stoning and crucifixion for crimes of homosexuality- Human Rights Watch article on Houthi recruitment of child soldiers- Human Rights Watch article on the al-Ahli Hospital Explosion- Willy Mac 'drama' YouTuber collated episodes on Hasan (part 1 and part 2)

Author's NotesFor the never-to-be-performed live show (what became the Valentine's trilogy), I needed someone from outside the circle to be delivering supplies to them, so I could set up that there was a second Zinnia out there. I have a couple of actors who are easy to get ahold of and can turn in quality voice recordings in a timely manner. Krissy is on that very short list. She's crazy busy with her own team but still manages to squeeze me in.It's a little-to-nothing role, so I said just give me something fun. She came back with this Edie McClurg voice out of nowhere that so delighted me that I had to put her in. And that was that. Or so I thought. When the time came to do the Mini Series, I started thinking about Mrs. Du Mer. How did she come to be in Massalia? When did she meet the Ladies? And what would make her an interesting lead? The concept I came up with and pitched to Krissy was: imagine Harley Quinn at 60 years old.And Dolores is a rock star. She had just been a jilted Russian, she's got a major role for us on the horizon, so I was sort of keeping her in reserve until that point. But the more Viviana developed, the more I knew I needed a seasoned pro to hold her own against Krissy. Luckily she was able to squeeze it in before she stepped up to the director's chair for a theater group. The recording session was one of the best I've ever been involved in. The rehearsal had the hairs on my arms standing up! Afterward, I realized I wasn't ready to say goodbye to these characters just yet. There's more of their story yet to be told.Oh, and the title? Of course, it's from Moana. Lin-Manuel, the heir apparent to Howard Ashman in the Disney legacy. A heroine who chooses compassion instead of battle? That's a very Swashbuckling ideal that we connect with.
