We sit down with filmmaker Elliott Hasler about the making of Vindication Swim, a period sports drama inspired by Mercedes Gleitze—the first British woman to swim the English Channel in 1927. Shot over three years entirely in open water, the film demanded extraordinary perseverance from its cast and crew, with lead actor Kirsten Callaghan performing all her own swims and no visual effects or body doubles in sight.Elliott shares how the team navigated unpredictable tides, safety challenges, and a micro-budget while maintaining historical authenticity and cinematic scale. From coordinating small, agile crews to rebuilding the film's entire soundscape in post, Vindication Swim became a testament in indie filmmaking ingenuity. Despite its modest resources, the film went on to play in over 300 cinemas for 18 weeks and break into the UK box office top 20.Elliott reflects on the resilience, creativity, and community spirit that powered the project—and how telling real stories of perseverance mirrors his own journey as a filmmaker. Vindication Swim opens in New York City on October 17, followed by select U.S. screenings and a digital release in November.About WrapbookWrapbook is a smart, intuitive platform that makes production payroll and accounting easier, faster, and more secure. Watch This Episode On YouTubeThe tagline of the podcast is “the future of filmmaking.” I don't think you can earn that without hosting my guest, Elliott Hasler, who began his filmmaking journey at the age of 10.Fifteen years later, he's two features in, the latest being VINDICATION SWIM (2022), a biopic around Mercedes Gleitze and her attempt to become the first British woman to swim the English Channel. Big period pieces aren't what you'd expect him to take on, but that boldness is partially, he acknowledges, why he's been successful. He also has a keen sense of the business of film, writing for the film festival Raindance about “What It's Like to be the UK's Youngest Film Director.” Elliott is here today to share his unique insight. In this episode, Elliott and I talk about:His unique start at filmmaking at the age of 10(!) and whether something like that is made easier through YouTube and online tutorials; His article “What It's Like To Be UK's Youngest Film Director” and what he'd change about it looking back six years; How he related to older filmmakers at 16 and his advice for young filmmakers now;Encouraging the youth movement in filmmaking; How people should feel when they watch VINDICATION SWIM;The challenges of shooting at sea without a green screen or a tank and what drew him to spending his resources on that part of the film versus other elements;Whether he'd use AI in a future film; What he's learned about in the world of distribution;Whether he's interested in producing films; What a bottle film would like from him, coming from period pieces; How to make a unique short film;Breaking away from the festival circuit and branding of the system;Whether he feels pressure to have a large presence on YouTube, TikTok and social media; Differences in US and UK filmmaking; What's next for him.Elliott's Indie Film Highlight: WITCHFINDER GENERAL (1968) dir. by Michael ReevesMemorable Quotes:“What sets this film apart is the fact that it is all real.”On nepotism: “if it's going to make your life easier to get into something, then why not; I certainly would've used it, it would've made my life a hell of a lot easier.”“ Making the film is 50% of the journey and then releasing it is the next 50%.”“ What you always wanna strive for in a film is to take audience somewhere where they've never been before.” “ Always aim big. And then you can always temper your expectations a bit. But if you start out too small, then I think you're selling yourself short.”“ In terms of AI, I think essentially what it will be good as is sort of a big cost cutting exercise.”Links:Follow Elliott On Instagram“What It's Like to be the UK's Youngest Film Director.”Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

Register for the Cannonball Run!! https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=118221On this episode, we have Pat Hasler from Cincinnati, Ohio. He recently won The Raven 24 Hour in Mt. Pleasant. His distance of 151.489 miles was enough to earn him a spot on Team USA's 24 Hour team at the World Championships in October ... for now. The qualifying window ends May 26, so if another American man runs more than 151.489, he won't be on the team anymore except as an alternate. We are hoping he won't get knocked off! This conversation was a great dive into Pat's history as a runner, his longtime dream of making the U.S. 24 hour team and what makes him so great at what he does.
On this episode of Michigan Wild, Nate and Drew Halser sit down and recap their season. Drew and Nate have both had similar experiences this fall. Both guys ended up punching their Kansas tags this year while still finding themselves holding onto their Michigan buck tags. Not only do they have their tags, but the target bucks they were chasing got shot by neighbors. Having a target buck harvested by a neighbor isn't a new thing, but it is always difficult to deal with. Nate and Drew both agree that trusting the process and sticking to their goals will pay off in the long run. The mere fact that they both have higher age class bucks to even chase is a win in their book and is a testament to all the hard work and dedication put forth each year. Kansas was good to Nate and Drew this fall as they each filled their buck tags. Drew took a slightly different approach with scouting on this out of state hunt and it sure paid off. Drew had multiple encounters with shooter bucks and ultimately sealed the deal after a rollercoaster of a hunt. Nate and Drew both emphasized the importance of tackling a wide area/variety of properties as a team on this trip. By combining all the data learned through scouting and deer sightings it really helped both guys kill their Kansas bucks. Rounding out the episode both guys are optimistic that they can get on a target buck these last few weeks of season. There are some great opportunities left and the plans are already in place to have a steller fall in 2025. Thank you for listening to the episode! Root Adorned is the brainchild/dream project of Erin Hasler. Erin's love for beautiful treasures began most likely at birth (maybe in the womb?) and has grown ever since. A self-described magpie, easily distracted by anything that sparkles; Erin continues to fill her own home with rugs, plants, pottery anddogs. Her philosophy being that you can never have enough of any of the above.Born and raised in Bend, Oregon, Erin is honored to bring her unique perspective to the community that she so dearly loves. After facing breast cancer as a young mother and wife, Erin discovered a new zest for life. She sold her hand-crafted jewelry line and sought out a new career that would enable her totravel the world, support artisans, and connect to the community. It was from this dream that Root Adorned was born. Erin is a firm believer that life is short and you shouldn't waste a moment of our precious time on Earth.Erin starts the conversation with the story of her background and what led her to create Root Adorned. She shares how her breast cancer diagnosis changed her life and how she got her jewelry line into stores. Laura Carlson Hasler is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Jewish Studies and Alvin H. Rosen Chair of Hebrew Bible at Indiana University. What are teaching strategies when the religious identity of students presents obstacles to learning in religious study courses? How do you teach academic inquiry when curiosity is considered antithetical to faith? What does it mean to teach a student who cannot, by faith tradition, admit not knowing? When students have "ah-hah!" moments - what is the best way to acknowledge their learning and support their faith journey?
Tonight we had a special guest from Zurich Switzerland, Peter Hasler who is a pastor there. Peter shared about or need to pursue a relationship with God and not just try to reach him with our faith.
