Alvaro Garcia, who is director of orchestral activities at the University of Wisconsin Parkside, talks about this weekends concerts that are devoted to music from the Star Wars film franchise.
Let's look at the music of Star Wars! So much of what we associate with the galaxy far, far away is connected to the soundtracks composed by John Williams. We take a look at the diagetic music of the films, from the cantina band tracks to the celebratory songs by Ewoks and Gungans. We also examine the common musical themes that John Williams built into the audio DNA of the saga, as well as musical pieces that may have influenced Williams in his composition. Our guest expert is Dr. Jason Giachetti, who teaches music at the college and high school level. He has a doctorate in music education, with an emphasis on percussive instruments. In Star Warsologies, hosts James Floyd and Melissa Miller combine their love of Star Wars with their keen interest in all things academic by asking experts about how their field is represented in a galaxy far, far away. It's a monthly podcast about science and Star Wars! To better understand the music, Dr. Giachetti prepared a presentation that showcases the musical notation in the score, and the YouTube version of this episode has his slides synched up to the podcast audio. You can watch the original Jabba's Palace song on YouTube. Watch the end of A New Hope without any music! Here's Darth Vader's scene with a romantic song playing. Redouble our efforts indeed! Check out the Hans Zimmer Master Class that Jason mentioned. And here's the books he recommended: The Film Music of John Williams by Emilion Audissino Creative Strategies in Film Scoring by Ben Newhouse Musical Composition: Craft and Art by Alan Belkin
Austin Wintory chats with longtime Star Wars franchise composer Gordy Haab. Together they discuss how Gordy found himself scoring more music for the space epic than even John Williams; creating music new music for an established franchise with your own voice and avoiding imitation; the complex approval process when working on Star Wars titles; and the fundamental differences between composing for video games and other types of media. Join the discussion on this one and help answer the hardest question posed to guests Blake and Mike. What one piece of Star Wars music represents the entire saga and why? What do you think? John Williams has given us some amazing music to go with a saga set far away and long ago. To select just one doesn't do anyone any favors, but we've got some takes on offering up some thoughts on this. From the Imperial March, Duel of the Fates or Lei's theme, Star Wars dare I say, depends on it's music for emotional connection. Listen to EP155 and see if you agree on our takes. There aren't a lot of Star Wars music videos out there! I know that's not exactly shocking, but when I checked out the recent music video of Ludwig Göransson performing the theme from The Mandalorian, the point hit home. Prior to that, I think the only other "official" music video was the one released for The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates." I'll talk about those today, and as promised, here are the videos I talked about in the show, and a couple more! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXJa1YcV6OQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga7Iw7-ANho https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ROl4LuyNQM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEcjgJSqSRU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdu8I1gWqk4 ***I'm listener supported! In this very special episode, VHS Rewind! brings to you a very special movie presentation from an alternate galaxy far, far away. One of the most fascinating by-products of the phenomenal success of STAR WARS was the proliferation of music knock-offs based on, or inspired by, the film, the film’s music, its characters, or even just the space setting. Naturally, Disco tracks were most prominent (it was 1977, after all), but a little digging uncovers other genres that wanted to cash in on that STAR WARS ka-ching (funk, R&B, country!) and a few genres that we at VHS Rewind cannot categorize). So we have created this alternate presentation of the STAR WARS story for your listening pleasure: we have the narrative of the plot (courtesy of a vintage read-along book – like BEATLEMANIA, an incredible simulation of your favorite characters) and cherry-picked a soundtrack comprised of these music knock-off tracks. Prepare yourself for a hilarious, 70mm, Dolby stereo movie going experience.

This holiday special is so terrible that once it aired, George Lucas made sure it could never broadcast again. On this episode of Newcomers, we take a quick break from finishing the prequel series to review the absolute fever dream that is the Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978. Right in the middle of the show, Bo decided to hold a blind Mountain Dew taste test with Casey as the subject. It was fun, but it didn’t really *sound* like anything.
