Soul A:M Rare… An Unknown Affair Into this third week into January 23 rewinding time to transport you back to Soul A:Ms origins especially concentrated towards the first couple of years into the Vinyl Frontier. Excitement was consistantly served up as I would embark on almost a weekly escapade of unprecedented events and mishaps from locked gates to turning up to Studio decks or Stylus's disconnected! Numerous traffic issues throughout a 50+ mile round trip, All the way to listener stalkers who would stop at nothing to go beyond friendship? Do you think turning up with 10 minutes to Air only to find our studio location inside of a Murder scene with a Police cordoned off area's around the Building! of which I had to use my best Axel foley skills to blag my way inside by getting an officer to escort me to our Solicitors Office to receive! Wait for it? an urgent fax!! Well it worked, And it was an important meeting i had… TO MAKE YOU BOOGIE? All this and more i embraced to share my Music with you and to me, Nothing could stop my shows, I stand two months short of 21 glorious years into my extended mission of transmission, Spreading Preserving and sharing undiluted Memories through timeless music all to invoke Joy! I simply say! Enjoy My Classic Soul Music, to make you feel good…Needed more today than any decade… Enjoy & share to those you care. MJ
Soul...The Vinyl Frontier! There is quite possibly no better way to usher in the next chapter of our lives than to shake off the shackles of the previous! Trudging onwards into the unknown! Holding onto what few positives you eagerly want to prolong. Whist I make slight modifications and enhancements this week to my Vinyl Studio's, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to revisit the seldom celebrated 1990s. A pioneering period within my DJ Circuit timelines that l fully embraced after an interesting and let's use the term!"Experimental Period" that was the final third of the 1980s. From the off! The 90s laid down new/old foundations for Mother Soul to further more share her embrace once more across our Dance-Floors, The Mechanised beats of New Jack Swing were relaxed with the re-introduction of instrumentalists passionate with a new found urge to take us back to the origins of the 70s inspirational Ghetto Grooves...The Godfather James Brown graces our shores and would invite a UK Group to warm up the crowd that I would later embrace and be noted as saying out loud! the Brand New Heavies as being the best Band of the 1890s. A Golden period in every way with Rhythms laid down in a period of Feel Good that will serve as the perfect backdrop to Dance and sing your way towards better Days... That await us in 2023! Happy New Year from Soul A:M Records Vinyl Uncut.

By Simon Cocking, review of The Vinyl Frontier: The Story of NASA’s Interstellar Mixtape, by Jonathan Scott, available from Bloomsbury here. Published: 17-09-2020 Format: Paperback Edition: 1st | ISBN: 9781472956101 Have you ever made someone you love a mix-tape? Forty years ago, a group of scientists, artists and writers gathered in a house in Ithaca, New York to work on the most important compilation ever conceived. It wasn’t from one person to another, it was from Earth to the Cosmos. In 1977 NASA sent Voyager 1 and 2 on a Grand Tour of the outer planets. During the design phase of the Voyager mission, it was realised that this pair of plucky probes would eventually leave our solar system to drift forever in the unimaginable void of interstellar space. With this gloomy-sounding outcome in mind, NASA decided to do something optimistic. They commissioned astronomer Carl Sagan to create a message to be fixed to the side of Voyager 1 and 2 – a plaque, a calling card, a handshake to any passing alien that might one day chance upon them. The result was the Voyager Golden Record, a genre-hopping multi-media metal LP. A 90-minute playlist of music from across the globe, a sound essay of life on Earth, spoken greetings in multiple languages and more than 100 photographs and diagrams, all painstakingly chosen by Sagan and his team to create an aliens’ guide to Earthlings. The record included music by J.S. Bach and Chuck Berry, a message of peace from US president Jimmy Carter, facts, figures and dimensions, all encased in a golden box. The Vinyl Frontier tells the story of NASA’s interstellar mix-tape, from first phone call to final launch, when Voyager 1 and 2 left our planet bearing their hopeful message from the Summer of ’77 to a distant future. The Vinyl Frontier: The Story of NASA’s Interstellar Mixtape, reviewed Firstly this is a great title for a book. Yes it’s a terrible pun, but it works too, and it gave us a kick each time we picked it up to read it. The Voyager probes remain in the news too as it still(!) 40+ years later, continues to send back amazing and fascinating data about what they are seeing as they hurtle beyond our universe. Overall the Voyager stories are an amazing one to tell, and in many ways it is the gift that keeps giving, more than five decades later. As always the computing power that they had in the sixties and seventies is a thumbnail’s worth compared to what any phone in our pocket today is now capable of doing. Despite this these seventies space missions continue to educate, inform and even excite us with their discoveries so many years later. In any exercise like this, it is always going to be potentially arbitrary which songs got picked, and which didn’t. Jonathan Scott certainly enjoys riffing on the aesthetics of making a good or bad mix tape, and you certainly get a dose of his own personal history in this book too. For the most part he is an amiable and pleasant narrator as he guides us through the story. In some parts, the asides and imagined conversations feel a little unnecessary, and he also faced the challenge that he was following a path and a story that has been told before. At the same time it is such a great story that a retelling of it is better than people not being aware of the wider Voyager context. It also captures a slice of the creativity and appeal to dream big that we surely need to hold onto. Scott also does a good job of capturing the quirks and idiosyncracies that slipped into the final product too, including welcoming speeches by Nazis, affairs breaking out, wrongly captioned pictures, and upside down wasps among others. It is a success as a popular science book and if it inspires a new generation to look upward and aim for the stars then it has succeeded. The fact that it is now trivially easy to hear what was selected is also a wonderful element of the times we live in now, and will hopefully ensure that humanity continues to aim high ...
My guest in this episode is Irishman Stephen McNulty. Stephen grew up near Dungannon where his piano teacher Victor was an early musical influence introducing him to the delights of Marc Bolan, T.Rex and Electric Warrior at a tender age . That early interest in music was cemented on June 22nd, 1992 when Stephen's first real gig involved a trip to Belfast to see Nirvana supported by Teenage Fanclub and The Breeders at The King's Hall. After that there was no turning back. In 2005 Stephen moved to Australia , initially for a year, but as is so often the case fifteen years later he is not only still there living in a beautiful part of Sydney, with his wife of 10 years Melissa and their two children Finbar (8) and Ailish (5) but they are Australian citizens In the past guests have tinkered with the format but Stephen came up with a pretty significant change and one that I am happy to say I loved. Stephen does choose a song from each decade of his life, but all his choices are from Australian bands and it absolutely works. Stephen's love of not just Australian music but all music comes across loud and clear and it’s no surprise that the Playlist runs to over 60 songs. In amongst some great music chat and stories we also touch on some big topics including the troubles in Ireland, Alzheimer's, the environment, treatment of indigenous Australians and the importance of protest songs, so hopefully something for everyone! You can listen to the Playlist from this episode, which includes Stephen’s selections along with a song from every artist mentioned by cutting and pasting this link into your browser: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2m5xLeR2Ywe3KzIRDtDLeo?si=kSUxzJfbTYmQ_4JFwfxkXQ
I'm digging deep into the stacks in this episode.
This episode is a little more laid back than the metal episode. This is back to the standard of the show.

Soul the Vinyl Frontier! I was never really going to be able to conclude May with a themed production after the happenings of the last 7 days! Let's rewind to last weeks excursion into my own musical timeline where I was able to recreate the captive state where i was able to once once more transport my Vinyl Studio's into a DJ booth of some of the most legendary underground clubs that I have had the unique pleasure of performing throughout the mid 80s early 90s. Your response has been magical and I thank you for expressing your appreciation Globally and locally... and then an incident in Minnesota USA rocked the world that has literally ignited a Plethora of frustration fuelled mainly by the unprecedented incarceration we have endured over the last three months, Living in the UK I felt the need to send out a message of unity through my music in the hope of creating calm, reason! And solidarity as we indeed are all one! Enjoy this weeks free-styled Master Mix with a nineties theme laced with love!
Each week I will dig through my vinyl collection for the radio show you deserve! Always something different. From the 50's up to today's artists!
From the publisher: In 1977, a team led by the great Carl Sagan was assembled to create a record that would travel to the stars on NASA’s Voyager probe. The Vinyl Frontier reveals the inside story of how the record was created, from the first phone call to the final launch, when Voyager 1 and 2 left Earth with a playlist that would represent humanity to any future alien races that come into contact with the probe. Each song, sound and picture that made the final cut has a story to tell. The Golden Record is a 90-minute playlist of music from across the globe, a sound essay of life on Earth, spoken greetings in multiple languages, and more than 100 photographs, all painstakingly chosen by Sagan and his team to create an aliens' guide to Earthlings. The final playlist contains music written and performed by well-known names such as Bach, Beethoven, Chuck Berry and Blind Willie Johnson, as well as music from China, India and more remote cultures, such as a community in Small Malaita in the Solomon Islands. Through interviews with all of the key players involved with the record, this book pieces together the whole story of the Golden Record. It addresses the myth that the Beatles were left off of the record because of copyright reasons and will include new information about US president Jimmy Carter’s role in the record, as well as many other fascinating insights that have never been reported before. It also tells the love story between Carl Sagan and the project’s creative director Ann Druyan that flourishes as the record is being created. Martin's interview with Jonathan Scott was recorded on July 9, 2019.

Greetings once again fellas, this month's episode is a special birthday mix recorded from our crop of archived 12" Records. 70 minutes of glass breaking and exhilarating tunes for you to enjoy. The mix was inspired by a Vinyl Frontier mix composed by Funk Deepstar in 2007 for 5fm. Recorded in the wee hours of the morning, and yours truly sat there closely watching as Funk was doing his wizards on the desk. That's when Master Ryken told him that one day he will compose something similar. It's been seven years since then but hey, our music is timeless and stands the test of time. Support the artists by buying original music at your nearest record stores or online. Check my favorite links for some of the online record stores. Should there be any concerns regarding the contents of this mix, you're welcome to contact me on morakes1@gmail.com.
