Some podcast apps may not display links from our show notes properly, so we have included a list of links at the end of this description. * As we approach the first season change of the year, we are finding ourselves inclined to revisit this conversation centered on time and ritual featuring author Sasha Sagan and CIIS Interdisciplinary Arts professor Carolyn Cooke. * Sasha Sagan was raised by secular parents, the astronomer Carl Sagan and the writer and producer Ann Druyan. They taught her that the natural world and vast cosmos are full of profound beauty, that science reveals truths more wondrous than any myth or fable. * When Sasha herself became a mother, she began her own hunt for the natural phenomena behind our most treasured occasions—from births to deaths, holidays to weddings, anniversaries, and more—growing these roots into a new set of rituals for her young daughter that honor the joy and significance of each experience without relying on religious frameworks. * Sasha's first book, For Small Creatures Such As We, is part memoir, part guidebook, and part social history—a luminous exploration of Earth's marvels that require no faith in order to be believed. * This episode was recorded during a live online event on October 10th, 2019. You can also watch it on the CIIS Public Programs YouTube channel. A transcript is available at ciispod.com. To find out more about CIIS and public programs like this one, visit our website ciis.edu and connect with us on social media @ciispubprograms. * We hope that each episode of our podcast provides opportunities for growth, and that our listeners will use them as a starting point for further introspection. Many of the topics discussed on our podcast have the potential to bring up feelings and emotional responses. If you or someone you know is in need of mental health care and support, here are some resources to find immediate help and future healing: * -Visit 988lifeline.org or text, call, or chat with The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by dialing 988 from anywhere in the U.S. to be connected immediately with a trained counselor. As we enter what promises to be an era of American-style Christo-fascism, it's hard for secular people -- people of reason, of science, who believe that faith is earned by evidence -- to not be cynical of those whose deeply held yet unproveable (indeed, improbable) beliefs will soon be determining our laws and dictating our behaviors.Yet, without hope there is only despair. So as we turn the page on 2024, a year of frustration followed by cautious optimism followed by grief for some/surrender for others, we at Unreasonable are like moths seeking the light. Our flame? Sasha Sagan. Sasha is a television producer, filmmaker, writer, and speaker on the ways science can inform our celebrations and how we mark the passage of time, inspired in part by the work of her parents, Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan. Her podcast “Strange Customs” explores why we practice the rites of our ancestors, act them out, teach them to the next generation, often without questioning them. "When we take a step back, however, what can seem bizarre, arbitrary…can also be, sometimes, profoundly beautiful.”Our holiday gift to you: a ray of reason-based sunshine for these gloomy times. Support the show

Recently, I had the pleasure of reading the November-December 2024 issue of “The Science Teacher,” a journal published by the National Science Teaching Association. Within this issue, I encountered the “Right to the Source” section, authored by Michael Apfeldorft. His article, titled “Joyfully Asking Why,” provided insightful information on a list of questions compiled by Carl Sagan and his wife, author/producer Ann Druyan. In the mid-1990's, Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan conceived of an interesting way to help young learners confidently ask questions and think about the world around them.  Carl and Ann compiled a list of 150 questions to develop a book series, where the title of each book would begin simply with the word WHY?   To download this manuscript of questions, please, visit: https://www.loc.gov/item/cosmos000083

Rituals come as much from religion as they do from the way Earth tilts on its axis and spins around the Sun. Up Next ► Rituals improve life according to ancient Chinese philosophers, says Michael Puett   • Rituals Improve Life According to Anc...   Many of humanity's cultural traditions are based upon the movement of our planet around the Sun. The summer and winter solstices and the spring and autumn equinoxes take on special significance. The reason these special days exist is because our planet tilts at an angle of roughly 23° on its axis. Without this tilt, there would be no seasons. The religious and philosophical themes of rebirth and resurrection, therefore, are partially the result of our planet's axial tilt. ---------------------------------------------------------------- About Sasha Sagan: Sasha Sagan is a native of Ithaca, New York and a graduate of NYU. This week on RfRx, Rob Palmer returns to discuss mass psychogenic illness. Have U.S. government employees in Havana and all around the world – even behind the White House gates – been attacked and injured over the past seven years by secret energy-weapons wielded by undiscovered assailants for political reasons? Have thousands of girls in their schools across Iran been poisoned this past year by their Islamic government as retribution for the mass anti-hijab protests? Did a 4-ft tall roller-skating Monkey Man with metal claws and glowing red eyes attack people throughout New Delhi causing injuries and deaths? Believe it or not, there is a connection between these seemingly unrelated headline-grabbing events. This presentation will examine a little recognized and less understood phenomenon that is likely the actual culprit in these and a myriad of similar events that have occurred throughout the world and throughout human history: Mass Psychogenic Illness.Rob Palmer is a retired aerospace engineer. At the 125th anniversary of the Battle at Gettysburg, Nearing the end of the Cold War, famous scientist Dr. Carl Sagan would re-dedicate the Eternal Light Peace Memorial. The speech, co-written with his wife Ann Druyan, juxtaposed the weapons of the Battle of Gettysburg with the weapons of subsequent wars, highlighting the increased potential for destruction with each war.  Sagan used the platform he was given to call for nuclear disarmament, underscoring the need to recognize our humanity as brothers and to work toward peace.    Hosted by Jason Epperson Visit LLBean.com to find great gear for exploring the national parks.  Use promo code PARKS20 to get $20 off your next purchase of $200 or more at solostove.com.

So we thought it perfect timing to sit down with her and revisit another brainchild of hers, The Cataclysm Sentence, a collection of advice for The End. To explain: one day in 1961, the famous physicist Richard Feynman stepped in front of a Caltech lecture hall and posed this question to a group of undergraduate students: “If, in some cataclysm, all of scientific knowledge were to be destroyed, and only one sentence was passed on to the next generation of creatures, what statement would contain the most information in the fewest words?” Now, Feynman had an answer to his own question—a good one. But his question got the entire team at Radiolab wondering, what did his sentence leave out? So we posed Feynman's cataclysm question to some of our favorite writers, artists, historians, futurists—all kinds of great thinkers. We asked them “What's the one sentence you would want to pass on to the next generation that would contain the most information in the fewest words?” What came back was an explosive collage of what it means to be alive right here and now, and what we want to say before we go. Rob Palmer, who has spoken about Critical Thinking at a previous RfRx, will be joining us this time to give a refresher on logical fallacies and lead the first-of-its-kind RfRx game, where those in attendance will have the opportunity to play on teams trying to outdo their competition in describing and identifying Logical Fallacies! (Participation optional. Everyone is welcome to listen and learn.) Rob Palmer has had a diverse aerospace engineering career, having worked as a spacecraft designer and tester, computer programmer, and software systems engineer. Rob began writing for Skeptical Inquirer in 2018, and has had over 60 articles published by Skeptical Inquirer and in other publications in 2 languages on 3 continents.Rob writes about contemporary skeptical issues, and has interviewed individuals as diverse as scientists Neil deGrasse Tyson and Richard Dawkins, Ann Druyan (producer and writer for the modern Cosmos series), Seth Andrews (host of The Thinking Atheist podcast), and even John de Lancie (Star Trek‘s Q).Rob has also been a speaker for various skeptic and humanist groups, including here at Recovering from Religion. He has spoken at Dragon Con, and thrice at CSICon, (the annual science and skepticism conference in Las Vegas.) Topics have included critical thinking, psychics and mediums, and the international Wikipedia editing project he volunteers for. He has been interviewed about these subjects on various podcasts and YouTube shows, including The Skeptic Zone, Big Picture Science, Be Rationable, The Phil Ferguson Show, Banachek's Brain, 502 Conversations, and The Thinking Atheist. The COVID-19 pandemic forced many of us individually and as a global cohort to reassess how and why we live the ways that we do and what really matters to us. Through the pandemic, we may have also felt moments of awe at the natural world and questioned our place in it. In moments like these, we're afforded glimpses into how we choose to operate in the world and understand our place in relation to everything else. Rituals play a key role in helping us make sense of the world around us, yet we often forget that they're even there. Today's guest, Sasha Sagan, picks up on this thread through her writing and podcast work.Daughter of “Cosmos” co-writer Ann Druyan and astronomer Carl Sagan, Sasha talks with host Adam Gamwell about the power of ritual for making meaning across life, death, nature, and more. She also shares how she learned to ask questions, the value of finding awe in the most mundane of rituals, and how turning our attention anew to the natural world can help us add wonder back into our lives.Show Highlights:[06:53] What inspired Sasha to create her podcast “Strange Customs”[13:04] How Sasha's parents taught her to love and ask questions[21:30] How parents may inadvertently teach their children to stop asking questions[29:33] Our beliefs and customs around language and communication[37:56] How Sasha thinks about different media as different methods for storytelling[47:56] How we dress up scientific phenomena in beliefs and customs[59:19] Why people are getting more creative with how they tackle life-defining moments[01:00:45] How we can demonstrate anthropology's value[01:03:37] How we can add awe back into our livesLinks and Resources:Strange Customs with Sasha SaganFor Small Creatures Such as We: Rituals for Finding Meaning in Our Unlikely World by Sasha Sagan (Anthrocurious' Bookstore Affiliate Link - purchasing here supports the show!)Check out Sasha Sagan's websiteConnect with Sasha Sagan via Twitter or InstagramConnect with Adam Gamwell via email, LinkedIn, or TwitterSubscribe to the This Anthro Life newsletter

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Some Carl Sagan quotations, published by finm on October 10, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Carl Sagan (1934–1996) was an astronomer and science communicator. He organised the first physical messages to space (the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record), presented the hugely popular TV series Cosmos (1980), and considered humanity's long-term future in Pale Blue Dot (1994). He was also part of the team of researchers who first discovered the possibility of nuclear winter, and so became a leading voice of concern about the use of nuclear weapons. Sagan's words were often prescient and always poetic. In particular, I think he captures many ideas related to longtermism and existential risk as powerfully as anyone writing today. I've tried collecting some quotations that stand out to me from Sagan's work, though I've only read a minority of his published writing. You can find a slightly more comprehensive version here. The website for Toby Ord's book The Precipice contains a list of quotations pertaining to existential risk, which I partially borrowed from here. Michael Nielsen has also written some fantastic 'working notes' on Cosmos. Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (1980) Note that Cosmos was co-written with Ann Druyan. Episode 1 — "The Shores of the Cosmic Ocean" The cosmos is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be. Our contemplations of the Cosmos stir us — there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, of falling from a great height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries. The size and age of the cosmos are beyond ordinary human understanding. Lost somewhere between immensity and eternity is our tiny planetary home, the Earth. For the first time we have the power to determine the fate of our planet, and ourselves. This is a time of great danger, but our species is young and curious and brave. It shows much promise. In the last few millennia we have made the most astonishing and unexpected discoveries about the cosmos, and our place within it. I believe our future depends powerfully on how we understand this cosmos; in which we float, like a mote of dust, in the morning sky. You can watch this opening scene here. The surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. On this shore, we've learned most of what we know. Recently, we've waded a little way out; maybe ankle-deep: and the water seems inviting. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from; we long to return — and we can, because the Cosmos is also within us: we are made of star stuff. We are the legacy of 15 billion years of cosmic evolution. We have a choice. We can enhance life and come to know the universe that made us, or we can squander our 15 billion year heritage in meaningless self-destruction. What happens in the first second of the next cosmic year depends on what we do — here and how — with our intelligence, and our knowledge of the cosmos. Episode 13 — "Who Speaks for Earth?" [Imagining human extinction] Maybe the reptiles will evolve intelligence once more. Perhaps, one day, there will be civilizations again on Earth. There will be life. There will be intelligence. But there will be no more humans. Not here, not on a billion worlds. [T]he world impoverishes itself by spending a trillion dollars a year on preparations for war. And by employing perhaps half the scientists and high technologists on the planet in military endeavors. How would we explain all this to a dispassionate extraterrestrial observer? What account would we give of our stewardship of the planet Earth? We have heard the rationales offered by the superpowers. We know who speaks for the nations. But who speaks for the human species? It's probably here. [Alexandria] that the word "cosmopolitan" realized its true meaning of a citizen, not just...

Our brains evolved on the African savannah well enough to allow Homo Sapiens to survive in that harsh, unforgiving environment, and go on to populate the planet. But the thinking organ which developed to prevent our death at the hands of predators and the elements is far from perfect. We are primed to trust the opinions and anecdotes of those in our close circle, and the pronouncements of those in authority. We conclude that something is true based on inadequate personal experience, less-than-perfect memory, faulty logic, and a host of cognitive biases. These tendencies can lead us to believe in things which do not comport with reality, and often lead to bad decisions, and even harm. In this talk, Rob Palmer will discuss these topics from a skeptical perspective, because understanding our innate cognitive failings can help us all think more rationally, better avoid errors, and hopefully live better lives. Rob Palmer is a skeptical activist who works to educate the public about critical thinking by contributing to Wikipedia as part of The Guerrilla Skepticism on Wikipedia project (GSoW), and by writing for Skeptical Inquirer as The Well-Known Skeptic. His column covers contemporary skeptical issues, and he has interviewed conference speakers, podcasters, YouTubers, scientists, activists, and TV personalities as diverse as Cosmos producer/writer Ann Druyan, Thomas Westbrook (Holy Koolaid), Seth Andrews (The Thinking Atheist), and actor/activist John de Lance (Q of Star Trek). Rituals are powerful tools cultures have used for all of recorded history to strengthen group bonds, so how do rituals bring us closer, why are rituals so commonly associated with religion, and what can you do to develop your own rituals to bring you and your family and friends closer together? What to Listen ForWhy is it so important to encourage curiosity in children and what can you do to impart a sense of curiosity in your kids? Why is a tolerance for ambiguity difficult but crucial in the scientific search for knowledge and understanding of the world around us?What was it like growing up as the child of Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan? How do we use rituals to deal with change and how can you use rituals to minimize the suffering you will experience throughout life? What should you say to someone who has just lost a loved one and doesn't necessarily hold religious beliefs about an afterlife? What rituals can we use to help us cope with painful events in life and why can not having a ritual amplify the intensity and duration of the pain? How can having a simple regular ritual strengthen your relationships and what fun easy ritual can you start using today? What is the difference between a routine and a ritual? How can you get children involved in building family rituals so everyone is involved and the family grows stronger? What can you do to remix old traditions or even create new ones you can use to build meaning in the big and small moments of your life? How do you tell the difference between cynicism and skepticism, and why can that understanding completely change your view of people? The word ritual is on many occasions associated with religion. That's a logical jump to make considering how ritualistic many religions are. But rituals can be any kind of practice or routine you use on a regular basis to be present and share a moment or event with yourself or other people. We can create and use rituals in our lives to help us celebrate certain moments. We don't have to use religious holidays to celebrate certain times of the year, as cultures have been creating their own holidays and celebrations since the dawn of man. And no one's stopping you from celebrating the rituals of your faith(s) and creating some rituals of your own to celebrate your family or friends or even just yourself.
