Buddies, Record Collectors, lend me your ears! For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts we resume my series "Mind of The Record Collector" which asks what we collect, why we collect it, and how we find it. Our guest today aims to touch all three tenets, and that is Josh Norrid - CEO/Owner of Hi-Fidelity Records in Tulsa, OK. Josh has a story familiar to many in the Vinyl Community: how a passion for this format and the music that comes from it lead him to work at record stores, for record companies, and eventually to open and operate his own business selling the best of the best Audiophile and high-end records available in the market today. Josh cut his teeth as a buyer at Josey Records, then learned directly from the pulpit (literally) of Chad Kassem's Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions operations in Salina, KS, before finally taking the leap in founding his own online business. Josh shares his personal journey as a collector along that road and shares his thoughts on the hobby today, how he sources his inventory, and even shares how he's added 21st century social marketing techniques to put the best pieces in the hands of the best collectors anywhere. Josh has a burgeoning presence on social media, including his own YouTube channel sharing information, tips, and details he's honed in his 20 years plus in the business. We know you'll enjoy this latest "Mind of The Record Collector" as much as we did! “What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back!”If you were really down with the cool kids in 1984, you would have most definitely have been passing around the school prized C90 cassettes featuring much copied Streetsounds compilations. And somewhere in there was Kurtis Blow's AJ Scratch track with those immortal sampled words from the Jimmy Castor Bunch in 1972. Straight out onto The BMXs and down to throw some funky worm shapes on that strip of lino!Or, in this writer's case, 1984 was mainly spent in a bedroom hovering over the play and pause button to catch a clean edit (without Simon Bates) of Two Tribes, still at number one after 5 weeks! But which mix would we get this week? Now, THIS was anticipation, pop kids!1984. A pop year of decadence, contradictions, conflict, controversy and coming of age. A year that authors (and the BBC) told us would feature impending, inevitable Armageddon. Annihilation, it turned out, came in the shape of a plethora of 12” mixes, plastic smiles, snoods, 808 drum machines, hairspray, neon and (red) balloons. How was it for you?In the third decade of the 21st century, a time surely we wouldn't (a) remember 1984 or (b) still be around to remember 1984, the team at NOW Music HQ presented the second in a (now) glorious series of curated Yearbooks. And what an album (and accompanying extra volume!) we have to rediscover. The sun is most definitely shining brighter than Doris Day!So for this special episode we're joined by two poptastic friends of the show to take a deep dive into 1984. Journalist, DJ and author Ian Wade and journalist, author and broadcaster Jude Rogers.Jude can be found contributing musings and writing about music, culture and much more in The Guardian, Observer and The Quietus amongst many others. Her first (best selling!) book, The Sound of Being Human: How Music Shapes Our Lives is available through White Rabbit books.Ian has written for Classic Pop, Record Collector, The Quietus, Official Charts, Sunday Times Culture as well as doing time at such titles as Smash Hits and The Face many years ago. He has worked as a PR on BBC's Later… with Jools Holland and occasionally DJs at Spiritland and Duckie. And his debut book 1984: The Year Pop went Queer is published by NineEight Books in July 2024.And whilst we don't take a forensic look at every one of the 80 tracks on the 1984 Yearbook (and the further 60 on the extra volume) we instead provide you with an opportunity to explore the sights, sounds, culture, music, genres, tribes and (school!) fashion that makes this year so thoroughly iconic for so many reasons.Join us then, as we turn up the neon and dance through mutually agreed destruction in celebration of 1984! Buddies! I had the great fortune to befriend the latest guest on "Mind of The Record Collector' during my latest visit to the Austin Record Convention in May. Ari Crane has been collecting records for several decades, traversing the country in search of the obscure, the unusual, and the rare pieces of wax many of us only hear about. A fixture on the record show circuit, the stories Ari shares here are GOLD (just like the ones he shared in Austin with me during our first meeting). He's been a record store owner, served as Consignment Director of Vinyl Records and Music Memorabilia for Heritage Auctions, and now leads his latest endeavor - Vinyl4Vets.com - putting vinyl and means to listen to it into the hands of the heroes who serve this country. It's a wide-ranging talk, including why Ari believes encapsulation (ie "slabbing") will move a section of the hobby forward in a way similar to sports cards, comics, etc., and he may even pull out some mega rare records in his own collection that he's decided to archive in this fashion. All this and MORE, here on Vinyl Community Podcasts and "Mind of The Record Collector"! Love it or leave it, the series Mind of The Record (er, Music) Collector is back on the airwaves of Vinyl Community Podcasts! This spin around the turntable features our guest Steve Herold, a lifelong collector of music in the physical form. His pursuit of music extends beyond our beloved vinyl - of late he's been feverishly pursuing compact discs for many of the same reasons we got back into vinyl 10-15 years ago. You'll hear about how his collection(s) started in earnest back in the day, the origins of his YouTube channel, touch on where are some of the best places to find cd's and vinyl present themselves during his work travels, and a few references to some Van Halen collectibles (of which he has a few). Joe Matera is a returning guest to the podcast. Joe has a brand new book titled Louder Than Words: Beyond The Backstage Pass. This is a follow-up to 2021's Backstage Pass: The Grit and the Glamour. Joe holds a unique position as a music journalist who is also a professional musician. It's allowed him access to areas where music journalists aren't able to.In this, his second book, Joe traces his childhood influences and meets the musicians who changed his life from heroes such as Janne Schaffer, who played on ABBA's studio albums, to Gerry Rafferty (the genius behind ‘Baker Street') and international superstar Bryan Adams and his songwriting partner Jim Vallance. Louder Than Words also delves into the often torturous touring life of a musician, with life on the road often leading to band break-ups or mental breakdowns. Joe also examines the impact of MTV on a generation of musicians, particularly one video by rising rock star Billy Squier that's said to have ruined his career. In addition to his solo music career as a singer/songwriter/guitarist, Joe Matera has written for international music magazines like Guitar Player, Guitar World, Record Collector, and Goldmine. He also writes a popular newspaper music column for the Shepparton News. His list of interviewees includes Metallica, Queen, Blondie, Bon Jovi, KISS, and Black Sabbath, to name just a few.Purchase a copy of Louder Than Words: Beyond The Backstage Pass JoeMatera.com---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

In one of the most overdue 'sodes in Vinyl Community Podcasts history, we finally - FINALLY - get the OG of the Vinyl Community - Brandon (MrHoffame) in the hot seat of the VCP exclusive series: Mind of The Record Collector. Brandon was literally one of the first in the community to begin sharing his collecting journey on YouTube and taking us along for the ride. Like many, I've learned a great deal from Brandon over the years: first through his videos themselves, then as I've been fortunate to get to know him personally, outside of the "VC". In fact, I've definitely "borrowed" several practices + approaches to how he's built and shaped his collection over the years. In a word, his collection is INSANE. Not only that, he has one of the best listening + collection rooms out there. We touch on that, plus talk about those quiet early days of slowing finding others online to share the collecting journey with, discuss the different "levels" to collecting we've both experienced, and share another bi-product of his collection prowess: his new curation venture of building collections for others (Sounds of You). All that plus some lighting round questions to put some cool water on the hot seat, NOW on Vinyl Community Podcasts! This spin around the turntable I'm joined by one of the best Vinyl Community members on YouTube, Melinda Murphy. One of the reasons I started my own YouTube channel was from watching Melinda stand hers up, how she treats her audience, and the great job she does sharing the journey of building her record collection. We touch on all of that, plus what made her start her channel in the first place. To close out the chat Melinda sits in the (kind of) hot seat for a set of fun lightning round questions. We're bringing it back, leaning back into the series here on Vinyl Community Podcasts that asks what we collect, why we collect it, and how we find it - Mind of the Record Collector. For this installment, we are joined by a great guy in the community - J.C. - from the channel "The Flipside - Vinyl Community with J.C. - to learn how he has collecting sweet black gold over the years. A collector since 1984, J.C. has already rebuilt his collection again, and hits the pavement hard (and often) looking for those elusive records on his list. These stops can include multiple daily trips to Savers, just as much as visiting his favorite local shop - Purchase Street Records - where he often volunteers his time just to hang and help. J.C. is a big proponent of the community, and keeping it positive, and we spend some time not only learning about that, but also where this love of vinyl + music began some time ago. In addition, Davin brought MSBR, Government Alpha, and Aube to the US. We get into all of this and more with an original of the scene. For ExtraNoisextra on the patreon, a big question about the Fab .44 Pure CD is answered with history behind the project. Also, Davin talks about seeing hardcore shows in the 80s. These two segments are in the middle of the episode.

Barbra Streisand [00:20] "The Christmas Song" Seasons Greetings from Barbra Streisand... and Friends Columbia Special Products CSS 1075 1969 Babs takes things in a particularly saccharine direction, but I suppose not every version can be the Nat King Cole Trio. Rockpile [04:25] "Heart" Seconds of Pleasure Columbia JC 36886 1980 The iconic album from the band that until this point has backed solo efforts from Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds knock it out of the park on their only release as Rockpile. Guitarist Billy Bremnar steps up to take the lead vocals on this snappy number. Pavement [07:00] "Frontwards" The Secret History, Volume 1 (1990-1992) Matador OLE-1064-1 2015 A compilation from a few years ago of early Pavement material. This one is a live version of one of my favorite Pavement songs, performed at Brixton Academy in London on December 14, 1992. Years later Los Campesinos! would win my musical heart with their version of this song (https://youtu.be/DnEa4ES7ep4?si=WeB_oCdOz73gNL0E). The Fresh & Onlys [10:21] "Do You Believe in Destiny" Secrets Walls Sacred Bones Records SBR-056 2011 Always love that big spacey sound Wymond Miles brings with his guitar. Peter Gabriel [14:53] "Shock the Monkey" Security Geffen Records XGHS 2011 1982 If you ask Peter Gabriel what this album is titled, he will likely say "Peter Gabriel", like his previous 3 solo efforts. If you ask Geffen Records what this album is called, they will say "Security". The more you know. The Seeds [20:16] "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" The Seeds GNP Crescendo GNP 2023 1966 A top notch side 1, track 1 from these garage rock progenitors featuring the one and only Sky Saxon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQWVHvjdfZw). Eigenlicht [23:19] "There Lies Already the Shadow of Annihilation" Self-Annihilating Consciousness Gilead Media Relic94 2018 Blackened metal from up Olympia WA way. A brief intro into this epic album. If it sounds like something that you might be interested in, definitely check out this release. The Who [25:13] "Odorono/Tattoo" Sell Out Decca DL 74950 1967 The third studio album from The Who and easily my favorite Who album. I made this one a twofer to give you, the listener, a better feel for the album. Bernard Gunther [33:08] "Face Slapping" Sensory Awakening: Relaxation Esalen Institute 1968 Evidently there is a follow-up record for this... Sensory Awakening: Couples. Yowza. Mitch Miller and the Gang [35:32] "Singin' in the Rain/All I Do Is Dream of You/Toot, Toot, Tootsie! (Goodbye)" Sentimental Sing Along with Mitch Columbia CS 8251 1960 Not sure about the last part of that medley, but the first two are solid selections from the titular film. Luna [38:57] "(Walkin' Thru' the) Sleepy City" A Sentimental Education Double Feature Records LP-DBL-0013 2017 A fine collection of covers from one of my favorite bands. This Jagger/Richards number orignally appeared on the Stones compilation album Metamorphosis (https://youtu.be/fRDtVsAvM-8?si=wyGkrescNCIU4vWd). The Parting Gifts also do a great Spector-esque cover (https://youtu.be/P903W_tJNi0?si=Fyw8WEIcJidDI4Ga). Frank Sinatra [42:42] "September Song" September of My Years Reprise Records FS 1014 1965 Frank handles this Weill number pretty well. For my money, the Lou Reed version (https://youtu.be/dHVqWRxpqXk?si=Jop71rSbI5jTlzXF) that appears on the Hal Willner project "September Song: The Music of Kurt Weill". Serana-Maneesh [48:22] "Drain Cosmetics" Serena-Maneesh Playlouderecordings PLAYR 4LP 2006 Another great side one, track one. Some mid-aighties shoegaze goodness out of Norway. Saw them perform an amazing at the Bottom of the Hill on this tour. Kermit the Frog [52:03] "Green" The Sesame Street Record Columbia CR 21530 1970 Sing it,œœ Kermie. Rosanne Cash [54:27] "Seven Year Ache" Seven Year Ache Columbia JC 36965 1981 This song has been stuck in my brain since it was first released, due in large part due to the synth lines courtesy of Booker T Jones. This was a number one album on the country charts for Rosanne, and made it to number 26 on the Billboard 200 that year. _Music behind the DJ: "Make the World Go Away" by Lawrence Welk

You probably know by now that I am obsessed with the music press, and so it was it was a treat to speak to Record Collector editor Paul Lester on this episode.Paul is obsessed with the music press too, and as a former staffer on the forever missed Melody Maker, then pivotal in the creation of Uncut magazine, and now editor of a revitalised Record Collector, he is perfectly placed to spend an hour talking about where the British music press has been, and where it might go next. I like Paul a lot. I think you might like him too. You can subscribe to his very good magazine here. Rip you very much, Buddies! For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts, I'm joined by a great resource in the VC, and that is Patrick aka pbthal. More recently known as The Vinyl Archivist, Patrick is a fixture in the community, running multiple livestreams each week on his channel. We jump into learning about his start on YouTube, within the Vinyl Community, and the beginnings of his record collection. Additionally, Patrick is well known in and outside the community for his process in finding, ripping, and storing the best sounding recordings on vinyl. What started at the end of the first decade in Patrick converting analog recordings to a digital database has earned him high praise and standing in the "ripper" community. We get into that, what his process and approach to ripping albums looks like, and how that impacts the titles on wax he chases to this day. Throw in some "lighting round" questions to close out this chat, and we have the makings of another winner here on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Enjoy! Sharpen the skates, Buddies! For this latest episode on Vinyl Community Podcasts and my series "Mind of The Record Collector", I'm joined by Steve Westman. Steve runs a terrific channel on YouTube, complete with regular content and interviews with a litany of guests in the Vinyl Community. You'll regularly find Steve and his guests discussing the topics of the day in the record collecting hobby, as well as sharing information and tactics for procuring the latest new releases. Before YouTube, Steve went about sharing his passion for music and record collecting during the pandemic on several Facebook groups specific to Audiophile record collecting - buying, selling, and trading - where he remains an admin on several to this day. We also hit on Steve's early interest in collecting records, whether there's any "competition" amongst other Audiophile-branded channels in the community, and close with some patented lightning round questions led off by who Steve's "grail" guest would be. We highly encourage you to check out Steve's channel (details below), but in the meantime hear it from the man himself here on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Seat belts are recommended for this one, Buddies! In a new 'sode likely to get people talking, I sat down with The Waxed (Rob) to learn more on his background on YouTube, his experiences in record collecting, and how sometimes the merger of the two has led to spirited reactions from folks all over the Vinyl Community. We also touch on his involvement with the Rachel's Ghost daily livestream, where he finds the most reward in record collecting, and a few jokes along the way (you can decide if they are good or bad). Sarah Vaughan [00:36] "Hey Naughty Papa" Sassy Mercury Wing MGW 12237 1962 (originally released in 1956) Hey now. Evidently this one was written by Hoagy Carmichael? Here Sarah is backed by Hal Mooney and his Orchestra. Subway [02:51] "Jupiter" Satellites Soul Jazz Records SJR 157-12 2007 Beep boop boop beep. Jerry Byrd [08:27] "Cold Cold Heart" Satin Strings of Steel Monument SLP 8033 1965 Getting very aloha with Hank's classic. The Hot Dogs [18:13] "Feel Real Fine" Say What You Mean Ardent Records ADS-2805 1973 A great little gem of a Big Star adjacent album. Digging this track by Terry Manning. Tom Jones [21:12] "Come to Me" Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow Epic PE 34468 1977 That's right, the theme song from The Pink Panther Strikes Again (https://youtu.be/vH4-8qR79WY?si=t1IrFzJuuVfkDknP&t=7) (Edwards, 1976). Scott Walker [38:34] "Amsterdam" Scott (Aloner) Smash Records SRS 67099 1967 Alright, so I'm cheating a little on this one too. The US release of Walker's first album, Scott, was titled Aloner. But I didn't have this album when we were running through Albums that begin with the letter A as in Alpha. It's really difficult to pick just one song to play here. My instinct wanted to go with "The Lady Came from Baltimore (https://youtu.be/7gFECZErdBY?si=Pi-CIpL5RRu22aA7)" but the atmosphere of his cover of Brel's "Amsterdam" (https://youtu.be/-Z0UGGvb4sQ?si=2SIFvLXn7CvA80UT) is so good. Siouxsie & the Banshees [43:21] "Mirage" The Scream Polydor POLD 5009 1978 The amazing debut album from Siouxsie and the Banshees. A pretty remarkable effort front to back. The version of "Mirage" that appears on this album gains a little polish but still retains the energy of the Peel Session version the year before (https://youtu.be/0S_vlZg7xBQ?si=1NqDL9OM6OhrSn50). Judas Priest [46:11] "The Hellion/Electric Eye" Screaming for Vengeance Columbia FC 38160 1982 One of the greatest 1-2 punches in album opening history. You know exactly what you are in store for. Fleetwood Mac [01:08] "I Don't Want to Know" Rumours Warner Bros. Records BSK 3010 1977 Funny how the classic rock radio format ruined so much music for me through it's incessant repetition of what it deemed classic, and yet I still thoroughly enjoy Rumours. A fun little number originally from the Buckingham Nicks days. Deerhoof [04:22] "Twin Killers" The Runners Four Children of the Hoof #1 2006 Maybe it's my Gemini nature (certainly not my killer nature) that draws me to this song. Arlo Guthrie [06:41] "Coming in to Los Angeles" Running Down the Road Reprise Records RS 6346 1969 Some solid country rock on this sophomore album from Woody's son. Support musicians include Clarence White, Ry Cooder, Gene Parsons, James Burton, Chris Ethridge and Jim Gordon. Ah the joys of travelling while holding. Neil Young & Crazy Horse [10:48] "Pocahontas" Rust Never Sleeps Reprise Records HS 2295 1979 Neil, I can probably tell you how she felt. The Rutles [14:10] "Cheese and Onions" The Rutles Warner Bros. Records HS 3151 1978 Yes indeed, the Prefab Four: Ron, Dirk, Stig, and Barry (https://youtu.be/sEwySvgfwLE). While my favorite Rutles song is "I Must Be in Love (https://youtu.be/54KBPA20b9Q)", "Cheese and Onions runs a close second, thank in no small part to the Galaxie 500 cover (https://youtu.be/pAzdSeAwKpg) of that song. Boston Pops/Arthur Fiedler w. Lou Reed [36:36] "Sally Can't Dance" Sally Can't Dance RCA CPL1-0611 1974 Another vivid Manhattan story from Lou's best chart performing album. Neko Case with the Pine Valley Cosmonauts [40:43] "Right or Wrong" Salute the Majesty of Bob Wills - The King of the Western Bloodshot Records BS 029 1998 A fine assortment of late-90s Bloodshot Records luminaries headed by Jon Langford give Neko Case a hand on this jazz standard that Bob Wills turned into a Western Swing classic. The Clash [43:57] "The Magnificent Seven" Sandinista! Epic FSLN 1 1980 Track one, side one from this 3 record release from The Clash. It features a pretty dope bass groove performed by the Blockheads' Norman Watt-Roy. Sarah Vaughan [49:29] "Just Squeeze Me" Sarah + 2 Roulette SR 52118 1965 The plus two being Joe Comfort on bass and Barney Kessel on guitar. A fine rendition of this Ellington standard. Greetings Buddies! For this latest one-on-one on Vinyl Community Podcasts, I'm joined by Jim Kaplan - the founder, publisher, distributor, editor, deliverer (if that's a word) of Record Collector News. RCN has been in print since 2008 just celebrating it's 15th year in existence. Published 6x each year, RCN showcases articles, op-eds, and additional content on the hobby from a vast array of contributors, including some in the Vinyl Community from YouTube. Not only a great source of information, RCN has given many folks (myself included - full disclosure) an open invitation to write for the paper sharing distinct points-of-view into record collecting in the current era. Jim has some great stories not just on the origins of RCN, but how he started his connection and passion for music, and his own insight into record collecting today in the metro Los Angeles area. It's a conversation I was looking forward to a great deal, and hope you find it as insightful as I did. Thanks for your continued support here on the channel and Vinyl Community Podcasts! Great to be back, Buddies! Thanks for tuning in to this latest 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts and the series "Mind of The Record Collector". For this latest trip around the turntable I'm joined by fellow record collector Rocco Richardson, host of the YouTube Channel "Pieces of Vinyl". Rocco has done an OUTSTANDING job of launching his channel and providing his audience with not only terrific vinyl news, tips, and music variety, but his production value is second to none - arguably the best out there. Though this conversation I learned there is a distinct reason behind that, and we explore his 15 month+ journey so far in the trenches of the YouTube algorithm and Vinyl Community at large. We learn about Rocco's own collecting journey, including where his wide palate of taste in music comes from, and we touch on a new opportunity that has presented itself here recently for Rocco to collaborate with the subscription service Vinyl Me Please. Big doings, Buddies! All this and more coming up on this latest conversation on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Thanks for joining us! Thanks for dropping in again, Buddies! Concert Buddie here with another terrific 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts! I'm joined for this conversation with a fellow record collector in the Vinyl Community: Scott Wilson, host of the YouTube Channel "The Pressing Matters". Scott has done a great job of creating videos on a myriad of topics, most centered around his pursuit of great sounding records (simple enough, right?). This conversation will walk through Scott's origins with YouTube, and provide background into where his vinyl collecting journey has taken him over the years. With topics on a variety of genres, Scott's channel hones in on great sounding reissue releases, specifically of the audiophile variety. Why does Scott prefer these versions compared to originals? Does Scott consider himself an Audiophile (and what does that even mean these days)? Has he recovered from MoFi-Gate? Answers to these questions (and more), and a nice "rapid fire" round to wrap up this fun chat, are just a click away. Welcome in...to another 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts! Welcome to Season 3, Episode 3 of Song Chronicles. Our guest today is singer and songwriter Billy Valentine, who just released a new album called "a masterclass in soul interpretation" by Record Collector. Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth was chosen as the first record for the relaunch of Flying Dutchman, the iconic imprint known for releases by Duke Ellington, Gil-Scott Heron, and Leon Thomas. Billy was born in West Virginia as one of thirteen children and later moved to Columbus, Ohio where his parents owned a nightclub. His brother Alvin introduced him to the path of professional entertainer. At 15 years old, Billy booked his first paying gig after sitting in with his brother Alvin during a performance at Leon's Cocktail Lounge in Patterson, NJ. After a stint in the original touring company of The Wiz, Billy and his brother John formed The Valentine Brothers. Together they recorded four albums and had a breakout Reagan-era protest single "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)." The Valentine Brothers After the duo split, Billy began a songwriting collaboration with Bob Thiele, Jr and Phil Roy. The trio's songs were recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Pops and Mavis Staples, The Neville Brothers, and his hero Ray Charles. We talk about the "pinch me" moment of hearing Ray's recording of his song, the title track of the album My World. Ray Charles's 1993 album My World Billy's incredible vocal interpretations made him a sought-after demo singer for songwriting greats like Burt Bacharach & Hal David and Gerry Goffin. Bob Thiele, Jr. says it was Billy's voice that made the songs they wrote together irresistible, making Billy "the secret weapon of nearly every songwriter in LA." We talk about how Billy came to sing on the soundtrack of Boston Legal. Burt Bacharach and Billy Valentine Recording during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 brought Billy back to the '60s, being brought up in Ohio during the Kent State and Vietnam War protests. He chose to reinterpret iconic protest songs by Gil-Scott Heron, Curtis Mayfield, and Stevie Wonder for his new record Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth. We talk about the permanence of protest songs in our cultural landscape. After many decades in the business, Billy says he is finally feeling good in his own skin and proud of how he made these songs sound. We talk about how hard artists are on themselves and how pleasing yourself is the hardest part. He has an ageless quality about him and describes himself as having a "young heart." Enjoy this conversation with a storied interpreter of songs.
Whoa Buddies! Concert Buddie here. Are you in for a treat today here on another 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts! Our guest today is known to many in the VC at large: Norman Maslov. Better known as Mazzy (remember, Mazzy Loves You), he's been a fixture in the community for many years, helping share many tales from a life learned and lived in music. From growing up in San Francisco during the late 60's - seeing the rise of some of the most famous bands in the world: The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane (and more) directly, in front of his own eyes, to working at a record store, and eventually a major label, Mazzy has spent much of his life closely tied to his passion for music. Arriving on YouTube years ago to share these stories was simply the natural progression into his own musical story. That said, this conversation gets into how he started on YouTube, how he's found connectivity in the community (including selling a viewer's own record collection), and we touch on a topic fathers out there may be able to relate to: what do we do when our children do not share our same passions; at least as passionately as we do? More specific: what's gonna happen to all our records when our time to leave this celestial plane comes? It was a great conversation, and one I hope you enjoy listening to here on this latest edition of Vinyl Community Podcasts!
