Have you seen the September covers of British and American Vogue yet? For some the images are a celebration of some of the most iconic faces we know, while others think it's amazing that four women over 50 are on the cover together. Still, there are others, including me, with a variety of conflicting thoughts, which is why this episode is dedicated to the supermodels specials. We've got the legends Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell on the covers of both issues at the same time but much of the talk has centred around the use of AI retouching. As promised on Instagram, in this episode I'm going to go through the stunning September issue of British Vogue, with THE supermodel, Linda Evangelista on the cover. For this shoot, the Canadian super reunited with equally iconic photographer Steven Meisel, to create some truly fantastical images. But, as a photographer and a Linda fan, I've been torn about this shoot. Because while Linda looks stunning, a lot has been done to turn back time, to show us a Linda that existed decades ago. It's not that retouching in itself is the problem; but, when viewed alongside the interview with the supermodel, where she expresses that she no longer wants to see herself in a mirror, the images bring up a troubling disconnect. So in this episode I break down what makes a September issue so special, who the Big Five of modelling were back in the '90s and then hone in on the efforts made to create what is undoubtedly a dreamy love letter to an iconic fashion figure. The Vogue September issue runs roughly 800 pages, but there’s always a behind-the-scenes story or two that are left untold. Enter Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour and Vogue Fashion Director Tonne Goodman. This week, Wintour and Goodman discuss the making of the magazine and this month’s cover girl, Kendall Jenner. “In a way, her chameleon-like abilities remind me of the great Linda Evangelista in that she can take on all of these different characters,” Wintour says of Jenner. “And that’s really what Tonne Goodman so successfully achieved in this shoot with Mert [Alas] and Marcus [Piggott] in September.” Jenner’s breakout beauty look didn’t hurt either. “She said, ‘You know, I would love to change something—I’d love to cut my hair,’” Goodman recalls of the spontaneous on-set chop, which came courtesy of editorial whiz Garren.
