The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Carolyn Murphy is a supermodel, actress, and environmental advocate. Her Vogue shoot with Steven Meisel in the late 1990s launched her into a fruitful, three-decade long career. In 1998 she was named VH1/Vogue's Model of the Year. She played Dubbie in the 1999 feature film Liberty Heights, directed by Barry Levinson. She was also one of the “Modern Muses” on the November 1999 millennium cover of American Vogue. She's also a surfer, and moved from NYC in the late 1990s to be closer to the waves in LA. Today, Murphy is an ambassador for Surfrider, The Wellness Foundation, Animal Haven, Edible Schoolyard NY, Ocean Unite, and No More Plastic. Along with being a mom, activism is a key component in her life. In this episode, Murphy talks with Jamie Brisick about the shock of New York as a young model, the shoots that changed her career, splitting time between Costa Rica and New York, the fashion industry, performativity, the challenges of introversion, surfing, and going against the grain.

The Possibility Club podcast: Practical Bravery - CUTTING EDGES!   In this episode we dive into the textured world of style AND substance, where creativity meets a profound sense of purpose. How do our expressions of style reflect broader cultural, economic, and personal shifts? How does the aesthetic we choose broadcast our identities and our values to the world? This episode takes us on a journey through the life and legacy of a creative industries pioneer who's been shaping the public personas of icons across the globe with nothing but a pair of scissors and a flair for transformation. From working class boy with a Bowie obssession to the style sculptor of Princess Diana, Lady Gaga, Kate Moss at their most iconic. What does social mobility look like at the very top of high fashion? And what is it like to move from creating the faces behind brands, to becoming one yourself? This is The Possibility Club, and our special guest is the hairdresser's hairdresser, Sam McKnight MBE.   ---   One of the most important image makers of the late 20th and early 21st century — New York Times on Sam McKnight   “What I know is, people want their hair to look good. Having your hair looking good is an incredible mood booster. It's a simple, relatively inexpensive way of making yourself feel better.”       Hair By Sam McKnight website https://sammcknight.com/   “We said from the beginning we want to bring some joy into the hair care world, which we have done. And I get lots of joy from that in return.”   Sam McKnight via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_McKnight   “That generation of the sixties is when social mobility became possible, really.”   Sam McKnight via Gagapedia (the Lady Gaga wiki) https://ladygaga.fandom.com/wiki/Sam_McKnight   Sam McKnight on X and Instagram — @sammcknight1   “When David Bowie exploded in colour, that was the start of it for me.”   David Bowie on Top Of The Pops, 1972, via YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOKWF3IHu0I   “My friends had a hairdressing salon. I took a Saturday job there and then very quickly I'd left teacher training college and started training as a hairdresser. I didn't want to be a teacher.”   “I've always taken risks and that goes back to being a teenager. I like to think that I've carried that through to my sixties. I've always been a risk taker.”   David Bailey, photographer, via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bailey   Twiggy (Dame Leslie Lawson), via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twiggy   “It was pretty brave, to leave a secure job in the salon in Molton Brown, the best salon in London — before it was hand-wash it was the top London salon, in South Bolton Street — it was the shit, it was the place to be, and I left that in 1980 to be by myself, doing this thing called ‘photo shoots' and two years later I was in New York working for American Vogue.”   Vogue (UK site) https://www.vogue.co.uk/   Molton Brown via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molton_Brown   “There are much more opportunities now but there are much more people going after those opportunities.”   "There needs to be a revaluation put on the values of what we bring. You have to train for years to be a good hairdresser. You can't just turn up with a hairdryer.”   ‘Hair by Sam McKnight' 2016 retrospective exhibition at Somerset House https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/whats-on/hair-sam-mcknight   “The exhibition gave me power in myself that I hadn't really tapped into before. To see it all in front of me, all the people I'd met.”   “The creative industries are very attached to emotions. Not only does music, fashion and beauty bring in billions to this country, which is not recognised properly, but they reach people's emotions. Your music, your makeup, your clothes, it sparks people's emotions. When you're working with people on a photoshoot, you're touching them.”   “Usually I'm meeting people when they're very young and forming themselves. You build very, very strong bonds with people and there's a huge emotion attached to it. It's a very special relationship.”   Kate Moss via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Moss   "She doesn't turn out of bed as ‘Kate Moss' at six o'clock in the morning, there's a whole process of becoming Kate Moss, becoming Princess Di, becoming Lady Gaga.”   Hair By Sam McKnight — the book, via Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hair-Sam-Mcknight-Tim-Blanks/dp/0847848787/ref=sr_1_2?crid=Q5S1J0SQNBVU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.p64JyGeSiexU74ORtn6pFf43Ch-AXpRYp6oSR1gyDQ8.ec_4zM0pkuyQY8U4zh6-4lHtVdu1obiSrk2i8BTHkqY&dib_tag=se&keywords=sam+mcknight+book&qid=1715868587&sprefix=sam+mcknight+book%2Caps%2C90&sr=8-2   “I listened to Coldplay on the radio a couple of years ago now, it was touted as the first sustainable tour and Chris Martin was amazing, he was saying, look we're a fifty piece troupe that's going on big jets all over America, we're not sustainable. But we are thinking about it, and we're doing everything we can in the small ways to have less of a footprint. And I thought, that is really inspiring because it's hard!”   “Now this is where the Internet is really incredible and positive, is people doing their own hair and posting the videos. There was a couple of decades when kids weren't really doing much with their hair — and that's completely and utterly changed. And I find that really inspiring, I love that the Internet has made that possible.”   "I'm a great collaborator but in the end it's instinctive as well and I need to be happy with it.”   “I don't really have to please anyone but myself.”   ------   This episode was recorded in March 2024 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts   For more visit www.alwayspossible.co.uk

In Assad: The Triumph of Tyranny (Picador, 2023), Con Coughlin, veteran commentator on war in the Middle East and author of Saddam: The Secret Life, examines how a mild-mannered ophthalmic surgeon has transformed himself into the tyrannical ruler of a once flourishing country. Until the Arab Spring of 2011, the world's view of Bashar al-Assad was largely benign. He and his wife, a former British banker, were viewed as philanthropic individuals doing their best to keep their country at peace. So much so that a profile of Mrs Assad in American Vogue was headlined ‘The Rose in the Desert'. *In this, the second of a two parter, we hear more of the crazy countercultural life and times of The Incredible String Band  - from the inside looking out  - with Rose Simpson   *Rose was one quarter of the band during what many regard as their creative and countercultural peak in the late 60s and early 70s.   •Her memoir 'Muse, Odalisque, Handmaiden' is an incredible story, relating how she rocketed (as a student without any particular interest in music or the counterculture), via an accidental meeting in a Scottish mountain cottage, to photoshoots in American Vogue and playing at Woodstock - and then came all the way back again.   *It's a fascinating tale, not just because the ISB were fascinating in themselves, but because it is beautifully told with a wealth of detail about a time that is usually dominated by mens' voices.   •She had many psychedelic adventures along the way, narrowly escaped getting involved in Scientology and then - and then left it all behind.   *And she knows where the sitars are buried...   *We dived into drugs, communal life, the ups and downs of free love, the catastrophe of the cult, making it up as you go along, the mysterious life and disappearance of Rose's bandmate Licorice, going full on and far out.   *Rose's memoir 'Muse, Odalisque, Handmaiden' (published by Strange Attractor)    *Adrian Whittaker's compilation book Be Glad for the Song Has No Ending    *Thanks to Peter Neal for the audio clips from his film Be Glad for the Song has No Ending       #tripping #psychedelics #london #consciousness #scotland #scottishcounterculture #counterculture #drug  #lsd #music  #joeboyd #1960s #scientology #rosesimpson #incrediblestringband #begladforthesonghasnoending #woodstock #stephenduffy #hippie

After she was scouted in a modelling competition in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 12, Ashley Graham went on to break barriers in the fashion industry by becoming the first plus-size model to appear on the covers of both Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue and American Vogue.“It started shifting the minds of agents, casting directors, art directors, editors to say, ‘Oh, this is where we're going. The zeitgeist is turning, and it's not just about what has been deemed beautiful for so long. Maybe we should think about what else is out there,'” she says. This week on The BoF Podcast, BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed sits down with Graham to learn how she became the most recognisable face of a global cultural movement and understand the personal philosophies that have guided her along the way.Key Insights: Raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Ashley Graham's career began when she was scouted at a local mall at the age of 12. Though she hadn't seen her body type represented in media before, her upbringing equipped her with the self-confidence to pursue the path. “Because I had come from a very confident home, I was able to look at my body in the mirror and be okay with it,” she says.Graham's breakthrough moment came in 2016, when she landed the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. A year later, Vogue came calling. “Vogue saw that there was an opportunity for monetising a size as well as different races and ages… the impact was so great for other plus-size models,” she recalls.Despite her success, Graham recognises that fashion still has a long way to go when it comes to representation, particularly when it comes to the clothes themselves. “There are so many designers that don't know how to cut around a breast, a hip or a butt because they just have not understood what that actually means,” she says. When it comes to discovering your own confidence, Graham believes its internal validation that matters most. “If more people went inward instead of searching out for everything and really leaned into prayer, meditation, quietness, then they would have more enlightenment and confidence.”Additional Resources:Squeezed by Rivals, Spanx Taps Ashley Graham to Embrace Celebrity MarketingOp-Ed | Fashion Needs to Drop Its Elitism and Accept Plus-SizeA New York Fashion Week Mystery: What Happened to All the Plus-Size Models? Known as the Face that changed it all in fashion, Beverly has graced over 500 magazine covers and was named one of the “20th Century's 100 Most Influential People in the Fashion Industry” by The New York Times and listed as Oprah Winfrey's “25 top legends.” She has been photographed by the most iconic names behind a lens, such as Francesco Scavullo, Arthur Elgort, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, and Patrick Demarchelier. A New York native, she secured a place in fashion history for being the first Black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in 1974 and the first Black model to land on the cover of French Elle in 1975. But you don't need to be a fashion enthusiast to be captivated by Beverly's storied career. It's her entrepreneurial and abundance mindset that is equally noteworthy. "You need this kind of connectedness to propel yourself further, faster...That's what mentorship does. Of course, you're going to fall down. We learn our biggest lessons from failure more than from our successes."— Beverly Johnson Often, people associate career longevity with time. At the American Influencer Council, we believe a successful career is choosing the projects and people you want to work with—staying relevant means getting to a place where you are in control of how you share your talents and expertise. With a career spanning five decades, Beverly returned to the runways of New York Fashion Week in February 2022, on her terms, for Sergio Hudson and Bibhu Mohapatra. She closed the shows for both designers, who paid tribute to her incredible legacy. And she has done over 20 covers in the last two years. Revisiting a conversation with BoF's Imran Amed from 2019, the 23 grand slam winning tennis champion, who announced her retirement this week, talks about how the mental toughness she has built on the court has prepared her for life as an entrepreneur.     Background:      This week, tennis superstar Serena Williams announced her imminent retirement as part of a cover story with American Vogue. Known in fashion circles for her on-court style, which included catsuits and denim skirts and a collaboration with late designer Virgil Abloh's Off-White, Williams will have more time to focus on as her burgeoning business empire, including her fashion label S by Serena and a venture fund, Serena Ventures.    This week on The BoF Podcast, we revisit Williams' 2019 conversation with BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed about how the mental toughness she has built on the court has prepared her for life as an entrepreneur.    “It's really important for things not to come super easy for you, and to kind of accept that challenge, embrace it and then just roll with it,” said Williams.     Key Insights:     Rather than work with a partner, licence her name or sign another lucrative endorsement, Williams felt it was important to invest time, money and effort in herself and chase her own vision with S by Serena, a direct-to-consumer brand she has funded independently.  Serena Ventures just raised $111 million and has invested in over 60 companies including personal care brand Lola, supply chain management firm Calico and razor-maker Billie.  The fund was originally founded in 2014 when Williams noticed people of colour and women were not getting the investments they needed.  Balancing all her pursuits and personal life can be tough. But, when she feels pinched, William is reminded of one of her favourite quotes from Billie Jean King: “pressure is a privilege.”      Additional Resources:    Serena Williams: The Champion's Mindset  Serena Williams, Style Icon, Retiring From Tennis How Athletes Went From Selling Merch to Building Fashion Brands

The ongoing pandemic has given us all the opportunity to examine what really matters most to us and what brings us true contentment. Each week through candid conversations with friends, thought leaders, creators, and entrepreneurs, Bobbi and Anjali are looking for ...www.iheart.comBOBBI BROWN BIOEven as a young girl, Bobbi Brown was enthralled by makeup. "I remember watching my mother apply her white eye shadow and black liner in her blue gilded bathroom--she was glamorous, but fresh-looking." And as soon as she was able to work, Bobbi raced to the small cosmetics store in town, where she got her first taste of formal training.Bobbi's education continued at Boston's Emerson College, where she earned a B.F.A. in theatrical makeup. Upon graduation, she moved to New York City to make it as a professional makeup artist. She showed her ever-growing portfolio to anyone who would look at it, slowly built up contacts and experienced the challenges typical of most freelance makeup artists trying to make it in Manhattan. But despite the ups and downs, her talent and drive earned her coveted gigs with top magazines, photographers and models. Bobbi began her collaboration with photographers Bruce Weber and Arthur Elgort for American Vogue, as well as with the late Francesco Scavullo for Cosmopolitan and Self. A seven-page spread of full-face beauty shots of supermodel Tatiana Patitz--shot by Wayne Maser--also put Bobbi's work front and center.Bobbi's big breakthrough was her first American Vogue cover. The image was shot by famed photographer Patrick Demarchelier and featured the soon-to-be-supermodel Naomi Campbell, made up by Bobbi Brown. Seven years after arriving to New York City knowing no one, Bobbi was part of the club. The industry took notice. As a successful makeup artist with access to everything in the market, Bobbi found nearly all products looked too artificial, making it impossible to create a gorgeous, no-makeup look.Ten years into her freelance career, a chance meeting with a chemist at a magazine photo shoot changed everything. "I had the idea to create a lipstick that didn't smell, wasn't dry or greasy and looked like lips, only better--and I told the chemist about it," she says. The chemist made the lipstick following Bobbi's unprecedented specifications and the result was Brown Lip Color, a pinky-brown shade. Nine other brown-based lipstick shades followed soon after, and Bobbi's set of lipsticks was complete. In 1991, her 10 lipsticks debuted at the Bergdorf Goodman under the name of Bobbi Brown essentials. Bobbi was expecting to sell 100 in a month. She sold 100 within the first day.The message was clear: women wanted makeup that was simple, flattering and wearable. Word spread quickly. Bobbi's unique approach to cosmetics was a long-awaited gift for women who wanted a more natural look. The magazine industry's most prominent beauty editors got behind Bobbi, and her small, insider brand garnered big time buzz. The range expanded beyond lipstick. Bobbi's foundations were yellow-based, not pink, revolutionizing face makeup as it's known today. And, before long, she showed that she was as adept at neutrals as she was at bright and bold colors. This sea change in the beauty market caught the attention of cosmetics empire Estee Lauder, who bought Bobbi Brown Cosmetics in 1995, just four years after the company's inception. Today, Bobbi Brown retains creative control of the brand. In addition to running her company, Bobbi continues to pursue her craft by creating the runway looks for New York Fashion Week. A permanent fixture backstage, she works with the industry's best designers including Rachel Roy, J. Mendel, Erin Fetherston, Tory Burch and Cynthia Rowley.Bobbi often does how-to segments on The Today Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show, and her advice can be found in syndicated columns and advice features for magazines and websites around the globe.Of course, you can always find Bobbi where she began--on the set. Bobbi is still the world's most celebrated makeup artists for personalities and fashion magazines.A New York Times best-selling author, Bobbi has written several instructional and engaging beauty and lifestyle books, including: Bobbi Brown Beauty, Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty, Bobbi Brown Beauty Evolution, Bobbi Brown Living Beauty and Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual. For Bobbi, making other people's lives better simply makes sense. "I love helping others because it feels good," she says.
