Anna Wintour Embraces a New Era at Vogue

Speculation, analysis, and commentary circulated all summer, after the announcement, in June, that Anna Wintour would step back from her role as the editor-in-chief of American Vogue. This changing of the guard is uniquely fraught, because Wintour's name has become nearly inextricable from the magazine, to a degree almost unknown today. And, as New York Fashion Week was set to begin, Wintour spoke with David Remnick about choosing her successor, the Vogue.com editor Chloe Malle. “It felt like this was the right time,” she says. With an unusual number of new creative directors in positions at major fashion houses, “It seemed like a good moment to bring in someone with a different perspective and a different generation who could look at things in a new way.” Wintour was appointed editor-in-chief in 1988, and generations of designers have come up under her famously acute and decisive judgments. She comes from a publishing family; her brother is a well-known journalist, and her father was the editor of the London Evening Standard. She credits him with steering her into a career in fashion, even suggesting that the teen-age Anna write down “editor of Vogue” as her career aspiration on a school form. “Working my first jobs in London, there [was] no money, there's no staff, there's no teams, so that you have to learn how to do everything,” Wintour says. “So, when I came to the States and there was a shoe editor and an underwear editor and a fabric editor, it was all so siloed. I felt very confident because I sort of knew how to do everything.” Wintour is also known for bringing politics to Vogue; she's a noted Democratic supporter and donor. “I've been impressed by Governor Newsom, I think he's certainly making a stand, and obviously I'm sure there'll be many other candidates that will emerge, hopefully soon.” But, in this political environment, Remnick asks, “How do you make a case that fashion is important?” Fashion, she replies, “is always important. It's a question of self-expression and a statement about yourself. . . . And, forgive me, David, but how boring would it be if everybody was just wearing a dark suit and a white shirt all the time?”New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 8:30 Thanks for understand as we took time off! I watched Andor and The Resident. Chandra watched The Better Sister, Ludwig, Patience and Echo Valley. She recommends them all except for Echo Valley. We both love Murderbot. We talk about Anna Wintour's announcement that she's stepping down as editor for American Vogue. Chandra thinks Edward Enninful might have something to do with it. Wintour was in Venice for the Bezos Sanchez wedding. We know Sanchez's dress is going to be trashy. Royals: Minutes (8:30) to 29:45 We found Meghan's Confessions of a Female Founder podcast informative and inspirational. We wish we could get more AsEver raspberry spread. Chandra ordered two jars of apricot spread and I only ordered one. Some people have already received their AsEver orders. AsEver is releasing a rose wine on July first. That's Diana's birthday and a special anniversary for Harry and Meghan. Meghan has been steadily posting to social media. She's making the most headlines for a video from when she was pregnant and dancing in the hospital. It was funny and cute and the tabloids had a fit. Two reality stars at a King's Trust event recreated that dance on a staircase at the palace. You're not supposed to take personal photos or videos at royal receptions, but both the King's Trust and official Royal Family accounts commented positively on that post. We think it was a setup meant to mock Harry and Meghan but it just makes the Windsors look obsessed as usual. I play a clip from the Aspire podcast where Meghan explained why she posted that video. Camilla Tominey called it a “sexy slut drop,” which is ridiculous. This week we heard that Prince George will be going to his father and uncle's boarding school, Eton, in the fall of 2026. I looked through our archives and there are stories as far back as January, 2019 about Kate pushing for her three children to attend her alma mater, Marlborough. We assume she was forced to give in about George's school, but Louis and Charlotte are likely to go to Marlborough. Last weekend were the Royal Ascot horse races, probably the biggest social event of the year. Kate pulled out at the last minute. It was a big deal judging by the coverage. Palace staff were said to be “bewildered and worried” and a source told the Daily Beast that Kate was tired after Trooping the Colour and Garter Day and that she has good and bad days. We got several negative stories about Kate after that, mostly about how she disrespected the King, but also just rehashing older negative stories about her. There were stories hinting that she didn't feel well, which they should have focused on. Kate is reportedly planning to go to Wimbledon, which is from June 30th to July 13th. She usually goes at the end, but in 2023 she went early to sit with Roger Federer. Hello Magazine has a cover story about Kate with the title “On her own terms.” I put it on Instagram and the aspect ratio makes it say “On her own.” Chandra had two tweets about Kate which went viral this week. It feels like the palace and press are turning on Kate. She might be quite sick, but they play fast and loose with the truth and the royals minimize illness, so it's hard to tell. Chandra remembers how Princess Anne's traumatic brain injury was swept under the rug and how she returned to work with bruises. Harry and William are covering US Magazine, and the article is about how William is mad Harry isn't his scapegoat anymore. It's part of William's embiggening campaign as he tells us about his plans to be king, and it sounds like he can't wait for his father to die. The press freaked out about Harry saying he didn't know how much longer Charles has, but had only a mild response to William. Comments of the Week: Minutes 29:45 to end Kaiser's comment of the week is from Lover on the post about Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson kissing on red carpets. My comment of the week is from Henny Penny on the post about Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos's tacky wedding. Thanks for listening bitches!

The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Carolyn Murphy is a supermodel, actress, and environmental advocate. Her Vogue shoot with Steven Meisel in the late 1990s launched her into a fruitful, three-decade long career. In 1998 she was named VH1/Vogue's Model of the Year. She played Dubbie in the 1999 feature film Liberty Heights, directed by Barry Levinson. She was also one of the “Modern Muses” on the November 1999 millennium cover of American Vogue. She's also a surfer, and moved from NYC in the late 1990s to be closer to the waves in LA. Today, Murphy is an ambassador for Surfrider, The Wellness Foundation, Animal Haven, Edible Schoolyard NY, Ocean Unite, and No More Plastic. Along with being a mom, activism is a key component in her life. In this episode, Murphy talks with Jamie Brisick about the shock of New York as a young model, the shoots that changed her career, splitting time between Costa Rica and New York, the fashion industry, performativity, the challenges of introversion, surfing, and going against the grain.

Until the Arab Spring of 2011, the world's view of Bashar al-Assad was largely benign. He and his wife, a former British banker, were viewed as philanthropic individuals doing their best to keep their country at peace. So much so that a profile of Mrs Assad in American Vogue was headlined ‘The Rose in the Desert'. After she was scouted in a modelling competition in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 12, Ashley Graham went on to break barriers in the fashion industry by becoming the first plus-size model to appear on the covers of both Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue and American Vogue.“It started shifting the minds of agents, casting directors, art directors, editors to say, ‘Oh, this is where we're going. The zeitgeist is turning, and it's not just about what has been deemed beautiful for so long. Maybe we should think about what else is out there,'” she says. This week on The BoF Podcast, BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed sits down with Graham to learn how she became the most recognisable face of a global cultural movement and understand the personal philosophies that have guided her along the way.Key Insights: Raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Ashley Graham's career began when she was scouted at a local mall at the age of 12. Though she hadn't seen her body type represented in media before, her upbringing equipped her with the self-confidence to pursue the path. “Because I had come from a very confident home, I was able to look at my body in the mirror and be okay with it,” she says.Graham's breakthrough moment came in 2016, when she landed the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. A year later, Vogue came calling. “Vogue saw that there was an opportunity for monetising a size as well as different races and ages… the impact was so great for other plus-size models,” she recalls.Despite her success, Graham recognises that fashion still has a long way to go when it comes to representation, particularly when it comes to the clothes themselves. “There are so many designers that don't know how to cut around a breast, a hip or a butt because they just have not understood what that actually means,” she says. When it comes to discovering your own confidence, Graham believes its internal validation that matters most. “If more people went inward instead of searching out for everything and really leaned into prayer, meditation, quietness, then they would have more enlightenment and confidence.”Additional Resources:Squeezed by Rivals, Spanx Taps Ashley Graham to Embrace Celebrity MarketingOp-Ed | Fashion Needs to Drop Its Elitism and Accept Plus-SizeA New York Fashion Week Mystery: What Happened to All the Plus-Size Models? In February 2010, Lauren co-founded Moda Operandi, revolutionizing the fashion industry and the way women shop.  Lauren sits on the Board of Directors for Moda Operandi, and Save Venice Inc., a non-profit dedicated to the conservation of the arts in Venice, Italy. Regarded as one of the most influential women in fashion, Lauren was inducted into Vanity Fair's ‘International Best Dressed List' in 2012. Lauren lives in New York City with her husband and their two children.
