Introduction: Minutes 0 to 8:30 Thanks for understand as we took time off! I watched Andor and The Resident. Chandra watched The Better Sister, Ludwig, Patience and Echo Valley. She recommends them all except for Echo Valley. We both love Murderbot. We talk about Anna Wintour's announcement that she's stepping down as editor for American Vogue. Chandra thinks Edward Enninful might have something to do with it. Wintour was in Venice for the Bezos Sanchez wedding. We know Sanchez's dress is going to be trashy. Royals: Minutes (8:30) to 29:45 We found Meghan's Confessions of a Female Founder podcast informative and inspirational. We wish we could get more AsEver raspberry spread. Chandra ordered two jars of apricot spread and I only ordered one. Some people have already received their AsEver orders. AsEver is releasing a rose wine on July first. That's Diana's birthday and a special anniversary for Harry and Meghan. Meghan has been steadily posting to social media. She's making the most headlines for a video from when she was pregnant and dancing in the hospital. It was funny and cute and the tabloids had a fit. Two reality stars at a King's Trust event recreated that dance on a staircase at the palace. You're not supposed to take personal photos or videos at royal receptions, but both the King's Trust and official Royal Family accounts commented positively on that post. We think it was a setup meant to mock Harry and Meghan but it just makes the Windsors look obsessed as usual. I play a clip from the Aspire podcast where Meghan explained why she posted that video. Camilla Tominey called it a “sexy slut drop,” which is ridiculous. This week we heard that Prince George will be going to his father and uncle's boarding school, Eton, in the fall of 2026. I looked through our archives and there are stories as far back as January, 2019 about Kate pushing for her three children to attend her alma mater, Marlborough. We assume she was forced to give in about George's school, but Louis and Charlotte are likely to go to Marlborough. Last weekend were the Royal Ascot horse races, probably the biggest social event of the year. Kate pulled out at the last minute. It was a big deal judging by the coverage. Palace staff were said to be “bewildered and worried” and a source told the Daily Beast that Kate was tired after Trooping the Colour and Garter Day and that she has good and bad days. We got several negative stories about Kate after that, mostly about how she disrespected the King, but also just rehashing older negative stories about her. There were stories hinting that she didn't feel well, which they should have focused on. Kate is reportedly planning to go to Wimbledon, which is from June 30th to July 13th. She usually goes at the end, but in 2023 she went early to sit with Roger Federer. Hello Magazine has a cover story about Kate with the title “On her own terms.” I put it on Instagram and the aspect ratio makes it say “On her own.” Chandra had two tweets about Kate which went viral this week. It feels like the palace and press are turning on Kate. She might be quite sick, but they play fast and loose with the truth and the royals minimize illness, so it's hard to tell. Chandra remembers how Princess Anne's traumatic brain injury was swept under the rug and how she returned to work with bruises. Harry and William are covering US Magazine, and the article is about how William is mad Harry isn't his scapegoat anymore. It's part of William's embiggening campaign as he tells us about his plans to be king, and it sounds like he can't wait for his father to die. The press freaked out about Harry saying he didn't know how much longer Charles has, but had only a mild response to William. Comments of the Week: Minutes 29:45 to end Kaiser's comment of the week is from Lover on the post about Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson kissing on red carpets. My comment of the week is from Henny Penny on the post about Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos's tacky wedding. Thanks for listening bitches!

Lauren's guest today is Robin Givhan, longtime fashion and cultural critic and author of Make It Ours: Crashing the Gates of Culture with Virgil Abloh. They also get into the changing definition of luxury, and Abloh's role in that transformation. Plus, Lauren shares a dispatch from Paris, where she co-hosted a Puck private dinner at Le Petit Chaise with ShopMy earlier in the week. The government is expected to announce a significant compromise on planned benefits changes to placate Labour rebels. If you think of a successful multi faceted flower farm business; it's hard to look past the passionate and vivacious Georgie Newbery.Having what she describes as a "portfolio life" Georgie has lived in Paris, previously working for American Vogue under the tutelage of the late Susan Train and Andre Talley before working for John Galliano.Departing the fashion world having set up "Common Farm Flowers" back in April 2010. Georgie now resides on her flower farm in Somerset in England's West Country (about 2 hours from London) with her business partner husband and kids. She says she will always grow flowers for sale, but Georgie has clearly expanded her business over the years and has turned her considerable talents to a number of different flower related business streams. A staunch supporter of Local British Flowers, Georgie now exclusively grows and supplies her flowers within her local area as well as using her own flowers in her work as a wedding florist. She has also authored two successful flower related books - "The Flower Farmers Year" and "Grow your Own Wedding Flowers". (Both readily available on her website)Additionally Georgie runs workshops on her farm as well as providing coaching and guidance to many budding (see what we did there) wannabe and current flower farmers. This includes focussing on the business side of things as much as the flowers. A natural raconteur, her latest venture has now seen her take on "the youtube" space with over 25,000 subscribers around the world. Her youtube club is thriving and we even got a message from a flower farm that is part of her club as we were writing this very episode description.Georgies energy and passion was self evident as we spoke with her about "why we should all support local", the business side of flowers, pricing and also why she feels the old idea that businesses should grow for the sake of it is absurd. Georgie is fierce in her support of other small business owners who want to make a good living supplying a very high quality product without endlessly having to expand and Common Farm Flowers is a business she holds up as an example of one where it makes enough money, but the founder continues to engage with the creativity of growing, cutting and arranging flowers in a way that is true to herself.Hosts: Sam Baff and Jayde Timms from Grown Not FlownGuest: Georgie Newbery - Common Farm FlowersWebsite: www.commonfarmflowers.comInstagram: @commonfarmflowers

In Assad: The Triumph of Tyranny (Picador, 2023), Con Coughlin, veteran commentator on war in the Middle East and author of Saddam: The Secret Life, examines how a mild-mannered ophthalmic surgeon has transformed himself into the tyrannical ruler of a once flourishing country. Until the Arab Spring of 2011, the world's view of Bashar al-Assad was largely benign. He and his wife, a former British banker, were viewed as philanthropic individuals doing their best to keep their country at peace. So much so that a profile of Mrs Assad in American Vogue was headlined ‘The Rose in the Desert'. Shortly after it appeared, Syria descended into the horrific civil war that has seen its cities reduced tos rubble and thousands murdered and displaced, a civil war that was still raging over a decade later. In this vivid and authoritative account Con Coughlin draws together all the strands of Assad's remarkable story, revealing precisely how a young doctor ensured not only that he inherited the presidency from his father, but has held on to power by whatever means necessary, continuing to preside over one of the most brutal regimes of modern times. *In this, the second of a two parter, we hear more of the crazy countercultural life and times of The Incredible String Band - from the inside looking out - with Rose Simpson *Rose was one quarter of the band during what many regard as their creative and countercultural peak in the late 60s and early 70s. •Her memoir 'Muse, Odalisque, Handmaiden' is an incredible story, relating how she rocketed (as a student without any particular interest in music or the counterculture), via an accidental meeting in a Scottish mountain cottage, to photoshoots in American Vogue and playing at Woodstock - and then came all the way back again. *It's a fascinating tale, not just because the ISB were fascinating in themselves, but because it is beautifully told with a wealth of detail about a time that is usually dominated by mens' voices. •She had many psychedelic adventures along the way, narrowly escaped getting involved in Scientology and then - and then left it all behind. *And she knows where the sitars are buried... *We dived into drugs, communal life, the ups and downs of free love, the catastrophe of the cult, making it up as you go along, the mysterious life and disappearance of Rose's bandmate Licorice, going full on and far out. *Rose's memoir 'Muse, Odalisque, Handmaiden' (published by Strange Attractor) *Adrian Whittaker's compilation book Be Glad for the Song Has No Ending *Thanks to Peter Neal for the audio clips from his film Be Glad for the Song has No Ending #tripping #psychedelics #london #consciousness #scotland #scottishcounterculture #counterculture #drug #lsd #music #joeboyd #1960s #scientology #rosesimpson #incrediblestringband #begladforthesonghasnoending #woodstock #stephenduffy #hippie
After she was scouted in a modelling competition in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 12, Ashley Graham went on to break barriers in the fashion industry by becoming the first plus-size model to appear on the covers of both Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue and American Vogue.“It started shifting the minds of agents, casting directors, art directors, editors to say, ‘Oh, this is where we're going. The zeitgeist is turning, and it's not just about what has been deemed beautiful for so long. Maybe we should think about what else is out there,'” she says. This week on The BoF Podcast, BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed sits down with Graham to learn how she became the most recognisable face of a global cultural movement and understand the personal philosophies that have guided her along the way.Key Insights: Raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Ashley Graham's career began when she was scouted at a local mall at the age of 12. Though she hadn't seen her body type represented in media before, her upbringing equipped her with the self-confidence to pursue the path. “Because I had come from a very confident home, I was able to look at my body in the mirror and be okay with it,” she says.Graham's breakthrough moment came in 2016, when she landed the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. A year later, Vogue came calling. “Vogue saw that there was an opportunity for monetising a size as well as different races and ages… the impact was so great for other plus-size models,” she recalls.Despite her success, Graham recognises that fashion still has a long way to go when it comes to representation, particularly when it comes to the clothes themselves. “There are so many designers that don't know how to cut around a breast, a hip or a butt because they just have not understood what that actually means,” she says. When it comes to discovering your own confidence, Graham believes its internal validation that matters most. “If more people went inward instead of searching out for everything and really leaned into prayer, meditation, quietness, then they would have more enlightenment and confidence.”Additional Resources:Squeezed by Rivals, Spanx Taps Ashley Graham to Embrace Celebrity MarketingOp-Ed | Fashion Needs to Drop Its Elitism and Accept Plus-SizeA New York Fashion Week Mystery: What Happened to All the Plus-Size Models? Have you seen the September covers of British and American Vogue yet? For some the images are a celebration of some of the most iconic faces we know, while others think it's amazing that four women over 50 are on the cover together. Still, there are others, including me, with a variety of conflicting thoughts, which is why this episode is dedicated to the supermodels specials. We've got the legends Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell on the covers of both issues at the same time but much of the talk has centred around the use of AI retouching. I would love to know your thoughts on these images too. If you're listening on Spotify please take part in the poll on the show's page. And feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on X, formerly Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Our Creators with Influence Podcast turned one on International Podcast Day, celebrated annually on September 30. Hosts Qianna Smith Bruneteau and Karston 'Skinny' Tannis welcome Supermodel, Author, and CEO Beverly Johnson to kick off season 2. Known as the Face that changed it all in fashion, Beverly has graced over 500 magazine covers and was named one of the “20th Century's 100 Most Influential People in the Fashion Industry” by The New York Times and listed as Oprah Winfrey's “25 top legends.” She has been photographed by the most iconic names behind a lens, such as Francesco Scavullo, Arthur Elgort, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, and Patrick Demarchelier. A New York native, she secured a place in fashion history for being the first Black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in 1974 and the first Black model to land on the cover of French Elle in 1975. But you don't need to be a fashion enthusiast to be captivated by Beverly's storied career. It's her entrepreneurial and abundance mindset that is equally noteworthy. "You need this kind of connectedness to propel yourself further, faster...That's what mentorship does. Of course, you're going to fall down. We learn our biggest lessons from failure more than from our successes."— Beverly Johnson Often, people associate career longevity with time. At the American Influencer Council, we believe a successful career is choosing the projects and people you want to work with—staying relevant means getting to a place where you are in control of how you share your talents and expertise. With a career spanning five decades, Beverly returned to the runways of New York Fashion Week in February 2022, on her terms, for Sergio Hudson and Bibhu Mohapatra. She closed the shows for both designers, who paid tribute to her incredible legacy. And she has done over 20 covers in the last two years. For the startup businesses listening, get inspired as Beverly shares how she continuously turns up her purpose, the impact of the supermodels on personal branding and why mentorship results in more remarkable career outcomes. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/creators-with-influence/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/creators-with-influence/support

Revisiting a conversation with BoF's Imran Amed from 2019, the 23 grand slam winning tennis champion, who announced her retirement this week, talks about how the mental toughness she has built on the court has prepared her for life as an entrepreneur. Background: This week, tennis superstar Serena Williams announced her imminent retirement as part of a cover story with American Vogue. Known in fashion circles for her on-court style, which included catsuits and denim skirts and a collaboration with late designer Virgil Abloh's Off-White, Williams will have more time to focus on as her burgeoning business empire, including her fashion label S by Serena and a venture fund, Serena Ventures. This week on The BoF Podcast, we revisit Williams' 2019 conversation with BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed about how the mental toughness she has built on the court has prepared her for life as an entrepreneur. “It's really important for things not to come super easy for you, and to kind of accept that challenge, embrace it and then just roll with it,” said Williams. Key Insights: Rather than work with a partner, licence her name or sign another lucrative endorsement, Williams felt it was important to invest time, money and effort in herself and chase her own vision with S by Serena, a direct-to-consumer brand she has funded independently. Serena Ventures just raised $111 million and has invested in over 60 companies including personal care brand Lola, supply chain management firm Calico and razor-maker Billie. The fund was originally founded in 2014 when Williams noticed people of colour and women were not getting the investments they needed. Balancing all her pursuits and personal life can be tough. But, when she feels pinched, William is reminded of one of her favourite quotes from Billie Jean King: “pressure is a privilege.” Additional Resources: Serena Williams: The Champion's Mindset Serena Williams, Style Icon, Retiring From Tennis How Athletes Went From Selling Merch to Building Fashion Brands
