Kerre Woodham: The shoplifting directive is not a good look

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. You cannot go into an election promising to get tough on crime, win the election and vow to draw a line in the sand, declare war on the crims, and then issue a directive that police won't turn up to minor crime. To paraphrase supermodel Linda Evangelista, who famously said she wouldn't get out of bed for less than $10,000, it appears our coppers won't get out of their Skodas for less than $500. A memo has surfaced directing police staff not to investigate crimes under a certain value, such as shoplifting goods under $500. As you can imagine, there have been howls of outrage from retailers and dairy owners, and police are now scrambling to explain themselves. Ann-Marie Johnson, Retail NZ manager, was on Early Edition this morning. She says that retailers do have a realistic expectation of police. “Retailers know that police aren't going to show up to every small, very minor case of shoplifting, but we certainly want to know that they're taking these crimes seriously and that where they can, they will be following up and arresting. Often they're repeat offenders, so we know who they are, and police know who they are, so we want to particularly focus on those people.” Well, exactly. I remember ages ago I left my window open. I used to live in a villa that was on the street, and I left the window open in summer and some opportunistic heffer managed to heave herself through the window and scoop up what she could see in my bedroom and disappear. And I rang the police, not because I expected them to turn up, but because I needed the case number for my insurance claim, but somebody turned up about 3 or 4 days later and dusted for fingerprints on the windowsill. And because of that, they were able to match it to a nest of Vipers in West Auckland, a group of women who had committed all sorts of petty thefts and burglaries and crimes, and so it was worth holding off on the house cleaning and not doing the window sill so the police could dust for fingerprints. Of course they can't turn up to every crime. I know that, but it's not a good look. Police Minister Mark Mitchell says he is happy to talk, but he doesn't want to get ahead “of the police executive who are going to clarify their position”. I can only imagine the “please explain” face on the Minister when he made a call to the newish-Commissioner. It's one thing for us all to know that if our wallet is nicked because we stupidly left it on a bus stop seat, we know the police aren't going to converge on the scene of the crime, all blues and two in their numbers. It is quite another thing to know that a directive has been sent applying nationally standardised threshold values when assessing theft and fraud. Losing $500 worth of groceries and goods can have a huge impact on a small business' weekly turnover, and I sure as hell do not want to see losers walking out of supermarkets with $500 worth of groceries, getting a free pass. You don't elect a centre right government for that sort of carry on. That was the very thing that galvanised a significant number of voters to vote centre right. You may not be able to get to every petty thief in the country, you know that. I know that the retailers know that, and the crims sure as hell know that, but the messaging from police has to be that they're going to jolly well try.

In this episode I go on a style journey with the Creative Director Lucinda Chambers. Lucinda has worked in the fashion industry for more than three decades…as Fashion Director of British Vogue for 25 years she certainly shaped the face of fashion and inspired the wardrobes of millions of women. She has worked as a creative consultant and stylist across both high street and luxury brands from Prada and Marni to H&M, River Island and Warehouse. We reminisce about her early days as a fantastically creative stylist at Vogue, in the pre-internet days she used National Geographic for her location inspiration…taking her to Ladakh in northern India on her very first location shoot…with Cindy Crawford and the photographer Patrick Demarchelier…sleeping in tents and drawing sticks to get the last few seats on the plane out…so naively brave… She talks eloquently about creating the story which has inspired the images…how for her image making was all about the narrative and I use the opportunity to ask about one of my favourite images of Linda Evangelista wearing Wakeley… Her journey in fashion has been a long and fabulous one …starting at Vogue as the secretary to the petty cash lady but her talent and creative vision took her the whole way…she is a phenomenally optimistic creative, making the most of every situation stating that it's never a crisis it's an opportunity...whether that was all the clothes for a cover shoot with Emma Watson being stolen from the luggage compartment of the Eurostar, to arriving to shoot in Miami as a hurricane had just flattened it… but always improvising and coming back with the shots. Since her well-publicised departure from Vogue when the then new editor Edward Enninful ushered in a new era and a new team… she has flourished creating her revolutionary shopping platform Collagerie with her ex-Vogue colleague Serena Hood. Expertly curating the best in fashion, interiors, beauty and lifestyle, the brand celebrates shopping at every price point, bringing you an innovative way to discover inspiring, and at times unexpected, designs. Thank you @lucindachambers for being such an open and generous guest …it was lovely to reconnect x

French photographer Robin Galiegue has carved a distinctive niche in the world of contemporary photography, captivating audiences with a refreshing vision of beauty, style, and attitude. Galiegue's early experimentation with makeup, styling, and photography laid the foundation for a career marked by raw energy and a timeless aesthetic. Seamlessly blending fashion, portraiture, and reportage, his notable projects include a recently published book and work with directional publications like Vogue Italia, Self Service, and Harper's Bazaar France, and collaborations with brands such as Saint Laurent, Isabel Marant, Tom Ford, and Hermès. In a world where he sees people molding into different personas online, Galiegue believes what is contemporary now is being oneself, in work and in life. Episode Highlights: Early ambitions: Born and raised in Lille, France, to artistic-minded parents, Robin Galiegue always had ambitions to move to a bigger city and first felt drawn to images and fashion at 14 in directing a photo shoot with his sister.  The big move: Dropping out of school at 16, Galiegue attended photography school in Paris, deciding over the course of five days.  Without reference: Coming to school with zero cultural exposure to photography, Galiegue gained technical expertise and was driven to work, though he knew little English and was not assisting.  Nerves: Even as a big name in the industry today, Galiegue is nervous about approaching collaborations, such as with legendary model Linda Evangelista. Hard to sit still: Being in Paris—or in large, bustling cities—incites Galiegue's desire to work rather than relax; he sees them as villages that offer bursts of energy. “Shooting has to be fun”: Known in the industry as a kind presence, Galiegue has an intuitive understanding of when to be firm and when to prioritize kindness.  Merging visions: Galiegue enjoys working with brands, stylists, and collaborators with strong voices to make something exciting and new.  Finding inspiration and peace: Traveling, meeting new people, having friends not in the fashion industry, and discovering new cultures keep Galiegue engaged in his creative work after hours.  What's contemporary now: Galiegue sees so many people playing roles on social media, so what's contemporary or necessary now is being yourself.  Fear of AI: Galiegue is not interested in AI and is more scared of its potential to replace collaborators and artists.

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:00 We'll have episodes out for the next two weeks and we'll be off for two or more weeks for the holidays. Last week I named the podcast #162 when it was actually #163. I watched the documentaries The Bleeding Edge on Netflix about the medical device industry and Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God on HBO. Chandra recommends Fair Play on Netflix and she loves the second season of The Gilded Age. Royals: Minutes 6:00 to 28:15 Chandra tweeted last Saturday that she had signed an NDA to read Omid Scobie's Endgame and that Scobie lays out how “none of the left-behind Windsors can manage their way out of a paper bag.” The Telegraph ran a story on that claiming that Omid was sending his book to “Sussex Squad influencers.” We're floored by how good and thorough Endgame is and by Scobie's pithy cutting observations. It's an excellent book, well written and entertaining. It's a great read for both royal followers and for people with a casual interest. Endgame has so much more of Scobie's voice than Finding Freedom and it's so impressive. The British media is mischaracterizing Scobie's book and focusing on the wrong things. They called him misogynistic for mildly criticizing Kate's worth ethic. One of the big stories out of Endgame is that Meghan mentioned two names of royal racists who inquired about her baby's skin color when she was corresponding with King Charles after the Oprah interview. If you read the transcript of the Oprah interview, it's clear that there were “several conversations” about it, both when Harry first started dating Meghan and again when she was pregnant with Archie. We first heard about Meghan's correspondence with Charles earlier this year. Chandra thinks that this was leaked by Buckingham Palace as a way to explain why Meghan didn't go to the Coronation. Scobie was careful and didn't name the royal racists in Endgame, however the Dutch translation of the book named Charles. Scobie said in an interview that Fleet Street journalists were aware of the names of the two royal racists for some time. He has said it's not true that his book had the names in it. Piers Morgan claimed that Kate was named in that inaccurate translation too. William's press secretary Christian Jones bargained with renowned blackmailer and abuser Don Wootton to bury the story about William's affair with Rose Hanbury in exchange for negative stories about the Sussexes. Wootton is the one who published the details about the Sussexit in early 2020. When Harry tried to call out Jones for leaking details to Wootton the firm protected Jones over Harry. We heard about this in the Byline Times report in late October and Scobie has more details and a timeline. Jones leaked the news about the Sussexit as the statement was being written. Harry was threatened in 2020 by The Lord Chamberlain, the most senior officer in the royal household, who said Harry would face severe consequences if he didn't back down. Harry's security and financial support was later withdrawn although we wonder about the timeline. Piers Morgan also wrote in his column in The Sun that “Harry would do well to heed the warning of Dionysius the Tyrant who was left a broken man by his constant warmongering and got finally bumped off by his own fed-up family.” He's basically threatening that Harry will be murdered! Piers is close with Camilla. Morgan also mentioned Samantha Markle in that column, and we think he's behind her lawsuit against Meghan. Comments of the Week: Minutes 28:15 to end Chandra's comment of the week is from Crowhood on the post about Linda Evangelista not wanting to hear a man breathing. My comment of the week is from Concern Fae on Rosie's post where Jennifer Garner was showing what's in her backpack. Thanks for listening bitches!
