The Vogue September issue is the most important issue of the year for the storied fashion magazine. And this year's edition is the first one published under the new direction of Chloe Malle, head of editorial content, who took over for the legendary Anna Wintour last September. On the Glossy Podcast this week, hosts senior fashion reporter Danny Parisi and editor-in-chief Jill Manoff take a look at Malle's first September issue and break down some of the ways that both Vogue and the larger fashion media industry have evolved. Chief among those changes is that print magazines are no longer the primary source of style information for the vast majority of fashion enthusiasts. The September issue of old was a bellwether for trends, informing the public about what was in style now and coming down the pipeline. But print can't compete with the speed of online publishing, where much of that timely trend analysis has moved, meaning that print has to be more timeless. The result is a sometimes contradictory product, full of ads for brands that are hot right now, but with editorial content that feels detached from the fashion business. "It's interesting that Chloe Malle is coming from a digital background," Manoff said. "I was a Vogue subscriber for years, and I used to read things that were buzzy and new. This issue had stories about improving your mood with Botox or one about the dangers of clenching your jaw. I was just like, 'What am I reading here?'" "A lot of it doesn't feel very timely," Parisi said. "Part of that is that people are more likely to buy print magazines today as a collector's item, as a coffee table book. That's why you see so many of those commemorative issues of random magazines in the grocery store aisle. They're not meant to give you timely information, which has all moved online." The hosts also discuss the cover story, featuring Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere, two children of famous parents, and the connection to Chloe Malle, herself the daughter of actress Candice Bergen and filmmaker Louis Malle. The issue ties the theme of children of famous parents to the many designers who have taken over at legacy fashion houses in the last year. And the September issue would be nothing without the clothes. This issue continues a trend in fashion editorial of single-brand looks. "We've definitely moved away from the stylist-driven looks, which haven't been the norm for a while," Manoff said. "I like when you see 'stylist-owned ball cap' or 'vintage jeans' in the credits. It's unfortunate that that's gone, because that is very inspiring to me. When you see a head-to-toe look that's all one brand, you're not getting ideas on how to style it. Nobody dresses that way."
It's been a major summer for sports, from the World Cup to the Knicks winning and even the Tour de France, for those who care. Now, the US Open is here, and The Run-Through co-host Nicole Phelps and Senior Editor (and big tennis fan) Corey Seymour had a chance to chat with world champion Aryna Sabalenka at the Gucci Fifth Avenue store during a live taping on Monday night, just a week ahead of the official start of the tournament. “There's been a lot of ups and downs. I would say that I started the season really well, on a strong note. But then, something went really off the hill, but I'm getting back on track. I'm working really hard to hopefully win the US Open for the third time,” Aryna told the hosts, reflecting on how the season has gone so far. Since her last US Open win, Aryna has had plenty of major life events. On top of winning the Grand Slam title last year and maintaining her ranking as the world's No. 1 player for 90 consecutive weeks, she got engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Georgios Frangulis, while wearing a pair of jeans (they were beautiful, she noted) and a plain white T-shirt. “I was crying for a little moment because I looked ugly. I was unprepared. Girls will understand that, you know?” Then there was the puppy. Adopting a dog was a deal she made with herself that was dependent on winning the US Open last year. When asked what she might get this time if she wins, she said: “I mean, Ash [her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel] needs a friend, so it's probably gonna be the same.” Also on today's episode, Nicole and Chloe chat about the sad deaths of Dolly Parton and Tim Curry and reflect on their favorite works by both artists. They also discuss Vogue's Casa Magazines pop-up, where Chloe indulged in horchata popsicles and hung out with Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere as they signed copies of the September Issue. This episode of The Run-Through is presented by Gucci. The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. DJ is finally FREE from corporate tax prep, Kelly has popped blood vessels in both eyes from too much research, and somehow that's only the beginning. This week on Locked & Probably Loaded with DJ & Kelly, we get into Kaia Gerber's story about being spiritually cleansed with a didgeridoo, Chris Hansen's thoughts on Robert Pattinson playing him, the upcoming Anthony Bourdain movie Tony, and why having a Regal Unlimited pass has basically turned going to the movies into our part-time job. We also talk ADHD, visual clutter and the impossible task of getting rid of stuff you've owned for years; celebrity impersonators who may look more like the celebrity than the actual celebrity; whether yachts are secretly terrifying; and the important financial strategy of sneaking a four-course meal—with dipping sauces—into a movie theater. Then Kelly brings up a theory about the way men and women interpret the 1–10 pain scale at the doctor: are men comparing their pain to the worst thing they've personally experienced, while women compare theirs to the worst pain they can imagine? And could that be one more reason women unintentionally downplay their pain when seeking medical care? Plus: New Jersey, hangovers, soft pretzels, mushrooms, tiny thumbs and entirely too much information. Locked & Probably Loaded with DJ & KellyNew episodes weekly. It's that time of year again—the September issue is back and this year is Chloe's first September issue as Head of Editorial Content at American Vogue. Fifteen years ago, before she interviewed at Vogue, she watched the 2009 The September Issue documentary to prepare herself for what was to come. Now it's her moment to be at the helm of the issue celebrating “the January of fashion.” Co-host Nicole Phelps and Vogue's Director of the Global Fashion Network, Virginia Smith joined Chloe to talk about their favorite stories from the issue and the behind the scenes mania of the elaborate photoshoots. They began by discussing the cover shoot photographed by the inimitable Steven Meisel starring Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere, two of the leads from Ryan Murphy's adaptation of The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis. This cover, featuring the young starlets in beautiful Chanel, calls back to the 1992 cover shoot of their parents Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere, shot by Herb Ritts. As far as the fashion message being conveyed in the shoot, Virginia explained, “We kept talking about this idea of designers looking back at the past to reinvent their future, and that tied in with the whole nepo-baby thing, and certainly made sense for our cover stars.” In her Editor's Letter at the front of the book, Chloe spoke about connecting with the cover stars over their shared experience of having famous parents and her embrace of the “nepo-baby” label. Homer, in particular, is new to the limelight and Chloe called him up. "Look, as someone with famous parents, you can run away from it, but that's not gonna work,” she told him, “And you should be proud of your parents. I'm proud of my parents—they've certainly made me who I am.” Nicole then spoke about Nathan Heller's deep dive with Demna. “[Demna] accomplished so much at Balenciaga and I think that has given him an assurance that he can take on this new challenge of Gucci. And he's really leading with fun.” The story includes a portrait of Demna, which was shot just days after the flashy Times Square resort show. Anna politely, but pointedly insisted that he not show up in all black, and he obeyed her wishes, showing up in a white t-shirt. They also noted a few other standout stories including Gaby Wood's profile of Marta Ortega, who has been responsible for leading Zara into the future over the past few years, Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin's maximalist train car shoot featuring the West End's favorite actors, Mattie Kahn's profile of conductor Gustavo Dudamel, and Adrienne Miller's conversation with Julia Louis Dreyfus about her upcoming Broadway debut. Also on today's episode, Chloe and Chioma caught up after Chloe's family trip to France. They discuss Chioma's latest Nicole Kidman cover shot by Venetia Scott and written by Giles Hattersley. “She's just got such presence,” Chioma noted, recalling a starstruck moment she had while greeting her at the Met Gala, “this kind of quiet, sphinx-like presence.” They also chat about the book club pick and Chioma's upcoming travels to Switzerland and Greece! Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere are Vogue's September cover stars! They had the glow of two people running on adrenaline and very little sleep when they joined The Run-Through for their first joint interview just ahead of The Shards premier day. The two stars of Ryan Murphy's new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's book were candid, funny, and clearly delighted to be doing press together for the first time. Asked for her elevator pitch, Gerber, a Ryan Murphy veteran who counts herself among Ellis's biggest fans, called the show a "seductive drama thriller" following privileged teenagers at an elite 1981 Los Angeles prep school as they collide with obsession, identity, and violence. Gere, for whom this was his first-ever podcast interview, offered a punchier synopsis: Euphoria, he said, "if it was in the '80s and was also a horror and was also Glee." Much of the conversation turned, fittingly, to what makes Ellis's work so unsettling in the first place. For Gerber, the answer lies not in the show's more graphic moments but in the eerie flatness with which her character and the rest of the cast greet even the most traumatic events. "A lot of the horror comes from the lack of reaction to the horror," she explained. Gere agreed, describing it as less shock than slow-building dread. The two also traced the emotional throughline back to their September cover shoot, photographed by Steven Meisel. It was another first for Gere, though Gerber has worked with the photographer since she was thirteen. Watching him find his footing on set, she said, felt like he'd "been doing this since you were 13." Gere and Gerber had the intimate, inside-joke energy of two people who've spent the better part of a year together on set. There was the cast's six-person group chat, unfortunately nicknamed "The Sharts"; Gere's failed attempt to sneak home a pair of the show's leather pants, which he wore, by his own count, for six months straight, and the very sweet wrap gift that Gere chose for Gerber. A beloved feel-good comedy no one expected to see again is back after three years, this time swapping the men's pitch for a women's team. Same warmth, same UK humour, same wholesome heart that made it a lockdown obsession, and stars you fell for returning. Then, reality TV's most chaotic new fixation has one very charming (very red-flag) leading man, 20 women, a 30-day countdown to a proposal, and a Call Her Daddy mogul pulling the strings behind the scenes. Need I say more?Plus if you refer something with a pulse of dread? There's a stylish, deeply creepy 80s-set teen thriller with a supermodel lead, a Hollywood serial killer, and all the sex, drugs and cigarettes the decade promised. Tom Cruise's daughter has quietly cut the cord, and she didn't need a headline to do it. We're unpacking how Suri chose a very pointed new surname, where eagle-eyed fans found the proof, and why this feels like the loudest silent statement in Hollywood. Then, one of the buzziest new shows has pulled off a casting move so cheeky it's basically a dare. Two of its young stars share a very tangled family history, because their parents were once one of Hollywood's great fairytale romances — and reporters on the red carpet made them squirm over it.Plus, a fresh first look at a bold new take on an icon, with two very different actresses stepping into the same legendary shoes.TAKE THE SPILL QUIZ HERETHE END BITS Find and follow us on socials: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thespillpodcast/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thespillpod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thespillpodcast/ Read all the latest entertainment news on Mamamia: https://mamamia.com.au/entertainment/Support Independent Women’s Media. We went around the world for this Out Takes, featuring some of the latest queer films on offer this May from Chile, Germany and the UK . With the 2026 HSBC German Film Festival back on in Melbourne until May 28, we had the opportunity to speak with director Faraz Shariat about their film ‘Prosecution’ which is one of the featured Australian Premieres in this year’s festival. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2026 Berlinale, ‘Prosecution’ is described an engrossing tale of good versus evil that cleverly combines legal drama and thriller for a powerful and urgent story about the realities of Germany's judicial system. Our exclusive interview with Faraz Shariat saw us cover a wide range of topics related to the film and its exploration of queerness for the main character. We also reviewed ‘The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo‘, an intense and at times fantastical drama written and directed by Diego Céspedes that is streaming now on Mubi. The film unfolds in the early 1980’s in Chile in a dusty mining town nestled in the Atacama Desert, where eleven-year-old Lidia is the only child raised in a household of queer performers working at a local cantina. With his widely acclaimed feature debut, Céspedes emerges as a distinctive cinematic voice, crafting a poetic vision of love and resilience that also reflects the marginalisation and violence faced by queer communities today. Our final review for this program was ‘Mother Mary’, directed by David Lowery and featuring an incredible all female ensemble cast including Michaela Coel, Anne Hathaway, Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber and FKA Twigs, the film explores the complicated professional and personal relationship between iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) who reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance. ‘Mother Mary’ is in cinemas now and features original music written and produced by Charli XCX, FKA Twigs and Jack Antonoff and sang by Anne Hathaway. The post German Film Festival with special guest Faraz Shariat and reviews of The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo and Mother Mary appeared first on Out Takes.
Popular culture has decided that men wearing ‘slutty little shorts’ might be the only way to combat global anxiety. From Harry Styles’ new video to Taron Egerton’s psycho dance to the $120 million ad starring Chalamet & Bunny, we’re not mad, just curious. Speaking of anxiety, a political earthquake just hit regional Australia, and every sitting politician is currently doing a little nervous wee. Yes, we’re unpacking the 30-year-coming rise of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation. "Mother Mary" is a psychological drama-thriller film written and directed by David Lowery. It stars Anne Hathaway as the iconic pop star, Mother Mary, who reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer (played by Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance as long-buried wounds between the two rise to the surface and a more sinister presence emerges. The film also stars Hunter Schafer, FKA Twigs, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and Alba Baptista. Lowery was kind enough to spend some time speaking with me, while promoting the film in between screenings, about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, now playing in limited release from A24 and expanding nationwide on April 24th. Thank you, and enjoy!
