Introducing Julianne Moore at the New Yorker Festival, in October, the staff writer Michael Schulman recited “only a partial list” of the directors Moore has worked with, including Robert Altman, Louis Malle, Todd Haynes, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lisa Cholodenko, Steven Spielberg, the Coen brothers, and many more legends. It seems almost obvious that Moore co-stars (alongside Tilda Swinton) in Pedro Almodóvar's first feature in English, “The Room Next Door,” which comes out in December. Moore has a particular knack with unremarkable characters. “I don't know that I seek out things in the domestic space, but I do think I'm really drawn to ordinary lives,” she tells Schulman. “I've never been, like, I'm going to play an astronaut next. . . . A lot of these stories [are] domestic stories—well, that's the biggest story of our lives, right? How do we live? Who do we love? . . . Those are the things that we all know about.”New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. Follow the show wherever you get your podcasts.

"My Dinner With Andre" is beautiful simple film directed by Louis Malle. A legendary filmmaker decided to film two theater guys talk about life while they eat in what looks like to be a fancy restaurant in New York. This film is unqiue due to the fact that it's simply two people who meet up and dine. And they talk for 111 minutes. For us nowadays, one will say "oh, well that's just a typical podcast". True, but it's the FIRST. And honestly the only of it's kind. There's really not a film like "My Dinner With Andre". These two men talk about life, throw in their perspectives. There is a point to the film. There is a beginning, middle and end and it's great. It all works very well. I love how these characters make life seem real by talking about things that are real to some of us. A scripted as it can be, they were able to create something that we can all relate no matter who we are, where we're from. I like the they it shot as well. There's an intensity with Andre Gregory that Malle was able to get down. When you see that close up, you feel the words that Andre is saying. You see that vulnerability and contrast it with Wallace Shawn's realistic approach of life. They are great together. You can tell Shawn is skeptical but he loves his friend. He has a respect for him that you can see and Malle, again, shoots it so dignifying, I can't help but just stare and figure if there's more to it and turns out in this film, there's not, haha. I'm actually going to watch it again. There's layers in the topics they discuss and it's fun to see something so real to be just fiction but it's that darn believable.Four out of four tokes.#mydinnerwithandre #louismalle

Trabalhou com Luchino Visconti, Michelangelo Antonioni, Louis Malle, René Clément, Jean-Pierre Melville, Jean-Luc Godard, Romy Schneider, Monica Vitti, Claudia Cardinale, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Gabin e tantos outros.

This week we're excited to present a conversation between My Dinner with André lead actor Wallace Shawn and Janet Planet filmmaker Annie Baker. When Dan Talbot, the pioneering distributor and exhibitor of international art films, read playwrights Wallace Shawn and André Gregory's script for My Dinner with André, he was so excited about the project that he helped director Louis Malle procure production funding from Gaumont. The concept was to depict an encounter between the two writers, playing fictionalized versions of themselves, as they discuss mortality, money, despair, and love over a meal at an Upper West Side restaurant—according to Gregory, Malle's one direction was to “talk faster.” By turns entertaining, confessional, funny, and moving, suffused with melancholy and joy alike, the film became a sensation at the art house upon its release, playing to packed theaters for a solid year, and went on to endure as a perennial favorite on the home video circuit. Now please enjoy the conversation between Annie Baker and Wallace Shawn.

1984 was a busy year for Cooder. Not only did he produce the soundtracks for Paris, Texas and Streets of Fire almost simultaneously. He also ended up juggling both jobs with Alamo Bay, Louis Malle's drama about the clashes between Texas and Vietnamese fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. Cooder saw the movie as a simple working man's story in the tradition of John Ford. His goal was "a Chinese cowboy thing without an overt ethnic statement.” Alamo Bay has a great soundtrack album with references to Paris Texas, The Border, and even Southern Comfort. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. Jenny Frankfurt is the founder of The Finish Line Script Competition, currently in its 7th year. Prior to Finish Line and her work as a script consultant, Jenny was a film and television literary manager/producer at ICM, Handprint Entertainment and her own company, Highstreet Management. She has represented writers and filmmakers around the globe, specializing but not limited to breaking UK, European & amp; Australian writers and directors into the US market. She sold television shows (both reality and fiction), features and staffed television shows for over 20 years. Jenny began her career in representation after graduating from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts by working at the William Morris Agency in New York where she worked for a legendary film, tv and playwright's agent, who represented such writers as Eric Bogosian, William Mastrosimone, Warren Leight, Eric Overmyer and Jon Robin Baitz. Jenny worked at ICM with clients such as Susan Sarandon, Louis Malle, Johnny Depp, Lasse Hallstrom and Will Smith. After deciding management would give her more freedom to produce and influence her client's careers she started working with manager Rick Yorn and clients such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Claire Danes and Benicio Del Toro among others. Finish Line is based on the idea that rewriting is essential to being a successful writer and we provide development notes when requested in order for writers to rewrite and resubmit new drafts (for free) throughout the competition. REFERENCES J.-Y. On the eighth episode of All the Film Things, we are celebrating Noirvember! I am joined by my friend, and host of the podcast Red Room Radio, Cristina Santiago, to discuss Louis Malle's 1958 noir film, Elevator to the Gallows. This episode is spoiler- filled. Elevator to the Gallows is a crime thriller film set in Paris and with the events unfolding within 24 hours.  The film follows two couples in paralleled storylines. One couple, is young and always together while the other pair are literally separated. Jeanne Moreau stars in the lead role of Florence, who we see in the beginning of the film, plotting with her lover Julien (Maurice Ronet) to kill her husband- his boss- in order for them to be together. After their plans go awry, a tangled web of events involving both couples is set in motion. Not only was this Louis Malle's debut directed feature film, this film also made Jeanne Moreau a star. Released two years before Jean Luc Godard's Breathless, Elevator to the Gallows is regarded as an inspiration for the French New Wave. Miles Davis's jazz score is regarded as "historic" and we quote from Richard Brody's article on the score and film for The New Yorker. I incorrectly stated the name of the author and did not realize until the release date of this episode. This is technically the second ATFT episode Cristina has appeared on. As I mention in the beginning in this episode, this was our second attempt at discussing Elevator to the Gallows. We recorded this second attempt on November 10, 2023 but there are a few excerpts from the first attempt, which was recorded on October 26, 2023. Cristina has a real appreciation for Old Hollywood films so I had recommended her this film, assuming she enjoyed foreign film as well, but I was surprised to learn Elevator to the Gallows was the first foreign film she watched! But watching the film didn't go so smoothly… Cristina and I discuss this in the beginning of the episode. Luckily, she enjoyed the film and is looking forward to watching more classic foreign films! Cristina hosts the pop culture podcast Red Room Radio. Like ATFT, Cristina has a range of topics and different formats allowing her to have a broad range of pop culture- focused episodes. She recently welcomed R. Kurt Osenlund on RRR for a pop culture chat. I was fortunate to have been a guest on RRR for part one and two of the Jayne Mansfield episodes. Be sure to follow Red Room Radio on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and more so you never miss an episode! In this episode, Cristina and I talk about the famous scene of Jeanne Moreau strolling the streets of Paris at night, Miles Davis's score, imagining what Academy Awards Elevator to the Gallows should have won, the film's ending, and much more! Our second in this pair of Louis Malle at his weirdest, Black Moon (1975) is an Alice in Wonderland-ish coming of age story during a literal battle of the sexes. We were concerned about a French male director making such a movie at the height of second-wave feminism, but Malle is nothing if not surprising. Malle claims he wrote the film on a sort of automatic writing while also changing course whenever a plot line looked like it might be emerging, which leaves us with a film quite widely open to interpretation. Black Moon's surreal nature also gets a big help by being shot by longtime Bergman cinematographer Sven Nykvist.

With the Louis Malle films we've seen so far it was clear the man was willing to reinvent his style, but I had sort of assumed he had eras at least. This week we start off a pair of his more out there films, one from very early in his career and one from the height of his career in the 80s. This week it's Zazie dans le Metro, an adaptation of a popular French book that borders on Finnegans Wake-level nonsense made into a live action cartoon that borders on Playtime-level nonsense. It's a real curveball as Malle's third film, coming after The Lovers and Elevator to the Gallows which are both certainly not this. It's also probably the funniest movie about a little girl running away from a child molester that you'd ever watch. It's a weird one.

Now, after three years, we've finished discussing all 45 films - and in this episode, together with Catholic filmmaker Nathan Douglas, we're taking a look back at the list as a whole. After discussing how and why the Vatican film list (actually titled "Some Important Films") was made, and putting it in the context of several decades of concern from the highest levels of the Vatican about the social and moral influence of cinema, we talk about our favorite and least favorite films on the Vatican's list, as well as the movies we think should be added in a hypothetical future update of the list. Ultimately, watching through the entire Vatican film list is not only an education in the classics of world cinema, but also gives  important perspective on the strengths and weaknesses of past cinematic engagement with religion, allowing us to see both the potential fruit that could be borne and the dead ends that should be avoided in the Catholic cinema of the future. 0:00 Introduction 11:31 History behind the Vatican film list 43:34 What films should be removed from the list? 1:24:10 Our favorite films on the list 1:55:30 What films should have been included that weren't? 2:34:09 What post-1995 films would we add? 3:00:19 The most Catholic/edifying films on the list Links Pope St. John Paul II's address on the 100th birthday of cinema https://www.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/speeches/1995/march/documents/hf_jp-ii_spe_19950317_plen-pccs.html "100 Years of Cinema" document from the Pontifical Council of Social Communications with model curriculum https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_councils/pccs/documents/rc_pc_pccs_doc_19960101_100-cinema_en.html Below is the 1995 list by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, "Some Important Films" (with links to our episode on each film): Religion Andrei Rublev, Andrei Tarkovsky (1969, USSR) The Mission, Roland Joffé (1986, UK) The Passion of Joan of Arc, Carl T. Hear what the guys have to say of this beloved classic.Blake can be found on Letterboxd @therealjohng. Murphy Brown, Dan Quayle and Damage (Erotic 90's, Part 7)

In the early 90s, one of the biggest scripted shows on TV was Murphy Brown, starring 40-something Candice Bergen as a product of the 60s whose high-powered career precluded marriage and family. When the character became a single mother, and was criticized for it by vice president Dan Quayle, a massive conversation about “family values” began that would change the culture – and, arguably, American politics. Off-screen, Bergen was married to French filmmaker Louis Malle. While his wife was in the middle of the “family values” maelstrom, Malle was making Damage, one of the most sexually intense films of the 90s, and one which used sexuality to explicitly critique the hypocrisy of politicians. Jenny Frankfurt joined us to discuss the Finish Line Script Competition, being a manager, and all sort of fun creative talk. https://finishlinescriptcomp.com ABOUT JENNY Jenny Frankfurt is the founder of the Finish Line Script Competition. Finish Line is based on the idea that rewriting is essential to being a successful writer and we provide development notes when requested in order for writers to rewrite and resubmit new drafts (for free) throughout the competition. This mimics a studio, network or production company process and helps the writer prepare for a serious career in the entertainment industry. Prior to Finish Line and her work as a script consultant, Jenny was a film and television literary manager/producer with her own company, Highstreet Management based in Los Angeles. Highstreet represented writers around the globe, specializing but not limited to breaking UK, European & Australian writers and directors into the US market. She sold television shows (both reality and fiction), features and staffed television shows for almost 20 years. From NYC Jenny moved to Los Angeles where she worked at ICM with clients such as Susan Sarandon, Louis Malle, Johnny Depp, Lasse Hallstrom and Will Smith. After deciding management would give her more freedom to produce and influence her client's careers she started working with manager Rick Yorn and clients such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Claire Danes and Benicio Del Toro among others. Jenny tried her own hand at producing the independent feature JOHNNY HIT AND RUN PAULINE, to which Emma Thompson was attached as Executive Producer. Jenny then started working with manager Benny Medina at Handprint Entertainment, representing talent, literary and production clients. She soon became Head of Handprint's Literary Department. --- Learn more from Paul's and Justin's books, both on Amazon! Go Ahead and Ask Creative Writing Life

Our eternal friends the Dom Deluise Patreon Pals are in on the mysterious fun with us this week as we review three of their (semi-)mystery movie picks! Up first! It's Louis Malle's 1958 debut Elevator to the Gallows, a strikingly photographed French film noir with a Miles Davis soundtrack. Picked by Listener Luke! Next up! We double dip on the French tip with another franco-feature, the sparse but bloody Revenge (from 2017)! It's more or less what you've seen from prior rape/revenge flicks, but with vastly more shots of butts and open wounds on Frenchmen's feet. Thanks to Aaron for picking it! Finally! Of course, it's 2018's The Clovehitch Killer, because we already reviewed The Office Killer, The Killer Tomatoes/Klowns/Bimbos/Workouts/Sharks, The Driller Killer, The Thrill Killers, Honeymoon Killers, and Fearless Vampire Killers - and didn't want ol' Clovehitch to feel left out. Stars Dylan McDermott. Picked by Travis. All this plus the Garfield poop update, Parker & Sam: A Love Story, casting for the next Dorito's packaging, Benedict Cumberbatch? I hardly knew her batch, Kevin's minority opinion corner, Kevin's off-mic snickerdoos, Parker's moving furniture, Sean's stuck in a fuzzy Skype session, checking your bagel qualifications, Miles on the track, donut shop payphones, James "King" Hong, nerd news and even more! Recorded live-to-tape on National Shrimp Day, 2022!! Direct Donloyd HereGot a movie suggestion for the show, or better yet an opinion on next week's movies? Drop us a line at JFDPodcast@gmail.com.
