On this episode of Tent Show Radio, beloved singer/songwriter trio The Wailin' Jennys perform a career spanning set, showcasing some of the most exciting and exquisite music on the folk-roots scene. The Wailin' Jennys are Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody and Heather Masse —three distinct voices that together make an achingly perfect vocal sound. Musical chemistry and a dedicated following turned this one-off grouping of three singer/songwriters into one of today's most beloved international folk groups. Although known primarily as an acoustic outfit, The Wailin' Jennys have a wide range of musical backgrounds that have formed their musical sensibilities. After the 2004 release of their first-full length album, the critically acclaimed 40 Days , and due to their frequent appearances on Garrison's Keillor's public radio show A Prairie Home Companion, The Jennys exploded onto the roots music scene, performing at packed venues across the U.S. and throughout the world. Their next album, Firecracker , was a powerful follow-up to their debut album and found The Jennys stepping out of the folk realm and into the world of alt-country, pop and rock. Garnering much attention, it was nominated for a Juno Award and won a 2007 Folk Alliance Award for “Contemporary Release of the Year.” It charted for over 56 weeks on the Billboard charts and was followed up by their 2009 release Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House, which spent over a year on the Billboard bluegrass charts. Through numerous solo endeavors and more than twenty years since their formation, The Wailin' Jennys continue to create some of the most exciting and exquisite music on the folk-roots scene, stepping up their musical game with each critically-lauded recording and thrilling audiences with their renowned live performances. Alexa grew up in a musical family as her Dad's passion for collecting vintage guitars inspired Alexa's love for acoustic stringed instruments, which led to her playing guitar and octave mandolin. Alexa's deep love for the Americana music scene came when she saw the Wailin' Jennys perform at a festival when she was 17. Life came full circle when a member of that band sang harmonies on Alexa's debut EP in 2018. A few years later, Alexa began couch surfing and really wanted to experience life in a mobile home/touring vehicle. A friend offered her his loaded-out van and Alexa spent the following months living out of it and traveling wherever her next gig would take her. She now lives in Colorado after the cold winter months had her saying goodbye to van life. She writes, gigs and teaches voice lessons.

Interview with Lily (ליליע) Weitzman and Jonah (יונה) Sidman, who recently led a workshop to teach songs created by them and others active in Yiddish language and culture activities around the Boston Workers Circle. The Yiddish Voice was on hand to record four songs sung by participants in the workshop they led, titled נײַע לידער פֿון באָסטאָן (New Songs from Boston), presented at the 2023 Yidish-Vokh, which took place earlier in August in Copake, NY, and was sponsored by the organization Yugntruf-Youth for Yiddish. These songs, as well as selected highlights from the workshop, were presented on this show. The four songs are (1) Levone-Mol by Lily Weitzmann; (2) In Hartsn Zol Undz Akhdes Zayn, Yiddish lyrics by Jonah Sidman, a translation of Let Union Be in All Our Hearts (traditional); (3) A Bletele Vert a Bletl by Adah Hetko; and (4) Eyn Kol, Yiddish lyrics by Linda Gritz, based on One Voice by Ruth Moody of The Wailin' Jennys. Weitzman and Sidman's creative Yiddish activities are an outgrowth of Di Nest, an incubator for Yiddish creative projects. Three different artists! Three different covers! Of songs by one beloved band!On the second edition of "Strong Covers," we're digging into covers of three Beatles classics: Earth, Wind & Fire's maximalist remake of "Gotta Get You Into My Life," Ray Charles' saucy reimagining of "Eleanor Rigby," and Bobby McFerrin's delicate recitation of "Blackbird." Come for the English-accented rhyme schemes, stay for the impeccable voice leading.Covered (lol) on this episode:"Gotta Get You Into My Life" by Paul McCartney/Lennon-McCartney, as covered by Earth, Wind & Fire in 1978"Eleanor Rigby" by Paul McCartney/Lennon-McCartney, as covered by Ray Charles in 1968"Blackbird" by Paul McCartney/Lennon-McCartney, as covered by Bobby McFerrin on The Voice, 1984OUTRO SOLOIST: Sam HowardThis episode's outro soloist is bassist Sam Howard. Sam performs and tours with all kinds of artists, from the Wailin' Jennys to Molly Tuttle. After his solo on the bridge, he played all the way through the song's outro, so keep an ear out for his playing mixed under the horns on the way out. Dear Jane friends,It's Tuesday, and not our usual Thursday, because we have something special for you: Today, we are kicking off a second season of the podcast! We have some amazing conversations lined up for you, dropping on Thursdays over the next few weeks - so make sure you are signed up for this newsletter, and each conversation will drop right into your inbox. You can listen right here (click Play!) or find the podcast on Spotify or Apple. And today, we interrupt our October month of horrors for a romantic, soulful interlude … about Jane Austen's most romantic, soulful story. We're talking with playwright Sarah Rose Kearns, an actor, Janeite, and playwright whose adaptation of Persuasion is showing in an Off-Broadway production through the end of the month. We recently spoke with Kearns for this Christian Science Monitor piece, and when we caught up with her by Zoom on a recent Saturday night she told us she feels like Anne Elliot has been her imaginary friend for half her life. Can we relate, friends? It seems to me like many of us feel - like biographer Claire Tomalin told us she does - that Austen's characters are indeed our intimate friends. And have been for a very long time, if we're lucky. As a writer, Sarah Rose Kearns has an answer to why this is: She attributes this intimacy partly to Austen's literary technique known as “free indirect discourse,” which takes us right into the mind of the character. My very favorite part of this conversation might be the part about the music included in Kearns's stage play - including the folk song “The Saucy Sailor,” featuring in this episode a version of the ditty by Canadian folk trio The Wailin' Jennys. Kearns also talked about some of our favorite themes of Jane Austen that come out strong in Persuasion - such as the feeling not only of longing and loss, but also of displacement, abandonment, and what Kearns called “the quest for a stable home.” Enjoy this Austen Connection podcast episode with Sarah Rose Kearns on taking Jane Austen's most heartbreaking, soulful, most painful and pining, and deeply romantic story - and putting all that on stage. And, friends, tell us: What is your favorite theme in the story of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth? What is your favorite part of the novel - is it The Letter? Do you feel that Anne Elliot is the perfect imaginary friend? And what did you think of The Wailin Jennys' version of “The Saucy Sailor” featured in this episode?Does anyone out there plan to be at the play, at Bedlam theater in NYC? The Austen Connection will be there on Friday, Oct. 22, for the TalkBack - come by and see us! And, watch for brand new Season 2 podcast episodes, dropping on Thursdays! Coming up: author Vanessa Riley about her latest book Island Queen, author Uzma Jalaluddin on her Pride and Prejudice retelling Ayesha at Last, Damianne Scott on her own retelling of Persuasion and her popular Facebook page “Black Girl Loves Jane,” and next week a special Halloween edition that continues our October month of Horrors, with Professor Maria De Blassey, about ordinary gothic, everyday magic, romance, and what it all has to do with Jane Austen - that's next Thursday! Sign up for the newsletter, and all these conversations arrive right to your inbox. And meanwhile, friends, stay healthy, warm, and happy, and stay in touch with us at the Austen Connection.Yours truly,Plain Jane If you liked this post, feel free to share it, friend! Singer songwriter greatness from the ultimate journeyman rocker to a band that completely closes the Americana circle, to a thoughtful tribute from a longtime friend. This week on Tent Show Radio, we have two great groups who played under the Big Top Tent in 2008. In the first half of the show, the award-winning Cowboy Junkies rocked out with us here in Bayfield during their 2008 international tour promoting their new album Trinity Revisited, which was a 20th anniversary of their original recording of the Trinity Session. You'll enjoy this Toronto alternative country/blues/folk rock band formed in '85 by Margo Timmins (vocalist), Michael Timmins (songwriter, guitarist), Peter Timmins (drummer) and Alan Anton (bassist). The second half of Tent Show Radio this week features The Wailin' Jennys The Wailin' Jennys are Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody and Heather Masse – three distinct voices that together make an achingly perfect vocal sound. Starting as a happy accident of solo singer/songwriters getting together for a one-time-only performance at a tiny guitar shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Wailin' Jennys have grown over the years into one of today's most beloved international folk/pop/world acts.
A lifelong gastronome and once corporate executive chef, Nic has launched, run and redeveloped restaurants and food-service programs in Nevada, California, Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota. He has cooked for many elite figures such as Madeline Albright, Micheal Pollan, Arun Gandhi, Wailin' Jennys, the King and Queen of Norway and Five for Fighting, along with independent contracting for the bulletproof executive, Dave Asprey and the elite PrimalHacker, Thaddeus Owens! In 2011, Nic retired from his executive chef role and ditched “the corporate lifestyle" to pursue a journey in self-improvement, emotionally and physically leading to what he calls BEING|HUMAN|OPTIMIZATION|COACHING (and shortly after, training many others who sought him out). The study of self-improvement through control of his environment, nutrition, and functional fitness. He began racing for the first time with this newfound energy, strength, and passion, and began to consistently win national obstacle course races and competitions. Quickly becoming a public figure and personality for Paleo nutrition and ancestral health. In 2016 Nic designed and launched GAS-P, Gastronomic Paleo, and Beguilement to bring more awareness and accessibility to ancestral nutrition, providing in-home culinary and retreat experiences centered on local farm to fork, foraged and seasonal eating aligning with our genetics. Using biohacking ideology and cooking practices he calls the Low-Impact method to improve the quality of the food and it's availability. There are four pinnacle pillars Nic believes each person can begin to implement independently then together to create a massive life-altering impact. The frame of BHOC is a study in optimizing our environment, resiliency, nutrition, and movement. All Humans have a primal instinct that allows them to recognize patterns of behavior and movement, it's his goal to help them tap this primal identity into BEING|HUMAN.Tapping your primal identity begins with a place of quite, pain and or longing for change. BEING|HUMAN starts here...''Close your mouth, block off your senses, blunt your sharpness, untie your knots, soften your glare, settle your dust. This is the primal identity.''~Lao Tzu Low Carb Hustle podcast: www.lowcarbhustlepodcast.com Announcement Links:Protein pancakes: https://www.instagram.com/p/CKnRtPrgCGD/Protein: https://www.seacretdirect.com/300943591/en/us/item/3898/SHAKE-VANILLA-Shake-Vanilla/Recovery: https://www.seacretdirect.com/300943591/en/us/item/2020/Recovery-Buy-3-Get-1-FREE-Recovery-Promo-Pack-Qty-4/Molecular hydrogen studies: www.molecularhydrogenstudies.com Intro Song - https://soundcloud.com/freemusicforvlogs/kazura-back-to-you-free-music-for-vlogs This week's sponsor is keto brick, our favorite shelf-stable fat bomb. Nicky Mehta (www.nickymehta.ca) is best known as a founding member of The Wailin' Jennys (www.thewailinjennys.com), a highly-acclaimed and hugely successful singer/songwriter trio formed in Winnipeg in 2002, but she's much more than that. From her official bio, "Singer-songwriter. Mentor to at-risk youth. Wailin' Jenny. Mental health advocate. Canadian. JUNO winner. Mother of twins. International touring artist. Biracial. Children's book author. Mental illness survivor. Life-partner. Speaker. Composer for contemporary dance. Poet. Band manager. University graduate. Former dancer. Winnipegger. Influenced by Jane Siberry, Lloyd Cole, The Smiths, and Sharon Olds. Product of British and East Indian ancestry. Nature lover. Realist. Idealist. Dreamer." I'm really grateful to Nicky for speaking openly about her experiences with mental illness, her interest in the effects of trauma, and of course her successful music career. music credits and more info: https://wp.me/pcKqe1-2Y
Halfway point, bebe! I mentioned I'd give a description of the song prompt here. This exercise is one of my favorites for getting started. You have your writing gear ready, you play a song (I've got a list going for the podcast or you can choose any song you like), and you write for the length of that song. You could be inspired by a lyric, a word, an image, the feeling of the piece. Whatever sparks for you, write. You only have til the end of the song to get something down! At the end of the song, you move on. Here's today's song: "Keep Me in Your Heart" by The Wailin' Jennys. There’s a proud troubadour tradition in the folk music world: musicians heading out to unfamiliar and sometimes unfriendly places, gathering songs and stories and music they hear, and then sharing all of it with anyone who wants to listen. Often, that tradition is combined with a collaborative energy and spirit - the brave song and story collectors teaming up with others who feel the same way to compile and share something special, something unique. Well, that troubadour tradition is something The Small Glories honored on their 2019 recording, Assiniboine & the Red. This Winnipeg based duo, made up of musical friends JD Edwards and Cara Luft, say this album kind of represents the story of…well, of them. Both have had extensive solo careers, and careers with other bands (Luft, for example, was a founding member of the Wailin' Jennys) and both have the kinds of musical contact lists you and I can only dream of. In additional, neither of these talents are originally from Winnipeg, and of course the two rivers that meet in the middle of the city - the Assiniboine and the Red - aren’t from Winnipeg either. Yet, that’s where they meet, that’s where they converge, and that’s where they get stronger, too. And strength, resilience, and connection are three of the main themes Edwards and Luft showcase on the album. They joined Folk Alley at the Lake Flower Landing in Saranac Lake, NY to talk about their history, their music, and their very exciting plans for the future.

Folk powerhouse pair The Small Glories are Cara Luft & JD Edwards, a dynamic duo planted on the Canadian Prairies. They are a study in contrasts; Cara, all earth mother on her 21-speed bike, helmet and backpack, environmentally friendly and wholesome, ebullient and engaging; and burly JD, looking like a cross between a biker and long-haul trucker in scruffy beard, ball cap, t-shirt and jean jacket, slightly intimidating (until you meet him). At first glance few would peg them for a highly creative musical partnership. Yet these two veteran singer/songwriters have teamed up and are building a buzz around their tight harmonies, authenticity and visceral performances.Luft is a Juno award winner, co-founder of folk trio The Wailin' Jennys, and a touring road warrior. She has earned a solid reputation as an exciting live performer, accomplished guitarist, clawhammer banjo player and insightfully honest songwriter. Edwards has a voice that defies categorization, one that easily ranges from gentle and melodic to fierce and powerful, leaving listeners begging for more. Together as The Small Glories, Luft and Edwards are a tour de force, a case of 1 + 1 = 3.The Small Glories stopped in at Beehive Productions in Saranac Lake, New York in June, 2016 for a few intimate performances and to talk about becoming a band and their 2016 album, 'Wondrous Traveler.'
