In this study, two basal diets were fed, one low-fat and one high-fat. The low-fat diet contained cottonseed meal and cottonseed hulls and the high-fat diet contained whole cottonseed. This balanced fiber and protein to try and make the difference between the basal diets and just the fatty acids. Basal diets were supplemented with two different fat supplements that had different ratios of palmitic and oleic acids. The applied question at hand was “Does fat need to be supplemented to a high-fat basal diet?” (5:32)The low-fat diet contained 1.93% fatty acids and the high-fat diet contained 3.15% fatty acids. Fatty acid supplements were fed at 1.5% of dry matter and replaced soyhulls. The palmitic acid supplement contained 80% palmitic acid and 10% oleic acid. The palmitic + oleic acid supplement contained 60% palmitic acid and 30% oleic acid. Thirty-six cows were used in a split-plot Latin square design, with half the cows on each basal diet. Under each split-plot, cows were allocated to a 3x3 Latin square, evaluating a control treatment (no fat supplement), palmitic acid supplement, and palmitic + oleic acid supplement. (8:46)Bill, Adam, and Clay discuss the increase in milk components the industry has experienced recently due to the powerful combination of genetics and nutrition. Hoard's Dairyman reported that 2024 was the first year that the U.S. had averaged over 4% milk fat going back to 1924 when records began. (13:01)Both fat supplements increased milk yield in low-fat and high-fat basal diets, but the magnitude of the increase was larger in the low-fat diet. The high palmitic acid diet increased milk yield more in cows fed the low-fat basal diet than the palmitic + oleic supplement did. High-fat basal diet cows had similar milk yield responses to both fatty acid supplements. The panel discusses the industry emphasis on milk components and if/when a threshold in performance might happen given the advancement of genomics and nutrition. (15:51)Clay asks Adam to remind the listeners about the relationship between fatty acids and crude fat or ether extract. Adam recommends moving away from ether extract and focusing solely on fatty acid content. Bill, Adam, and Clay talk about the variability in the fatty acid content of various feedstuffs. (25:33)Bill asks if the feed efficiency improvement with the fat supplementation was due to more of a gross energy or digestible/metabolizable energy effect. Adam suggests it may be a little of both. The diet is more energy-dense, but we also know now that some of those specific fatty acids have specific effects. Improvements in NDF digestibility are consistently observed with palmitic acid supplementation. Oleic acid improves fatty acid absorption and has an impact on adipose tissue metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Bill and Adam go on to talk more philosophically about the best way to measure feed efficiency in dairy cows. (29:02)If Adam could do this experiment over again, he would have pushed the basal fat levels a bit more and had both lower-producing and higher-producing cows in the experiment. This leads to a discussion of how the results might have differed if distiller grains or soybeans were used instead of cottonseed in the experiment. Listeners should be careful not to extrapolate the results from this experiment to other fat sources. (33:55)Adam emphasizes that we shouldn't be afraid of feeding high-fat diets, either basal or supplemental fatty acids, especially to high-producing cows. We should be very mindful about where those fatty acids are coming from. We could provide the same nutrients by feeding either cottonseed or distillers grains, but how those ingredients feed out could be very different. (38:38)In summary, Clay agrees we should take a fresh look at how much fat we're feeding cows in basal diets and underlines the importance of the source of supplemental fatty acids. Bill concurs and commends Adam's group for basically making cottonseed without fat in the low-fat basal diet, which allowed for very clean interpretations of the fatty acid supplement results. Adam underlines that we can feed higher fat diets, but the fatty acid profile of all of those ingredients we might use is going to be key. In addition to fatty acids in diets and supplements, de novo synthesis of milk fat from acetate is the other half of the equation. Bringing those together might be a strategy to keep up with genetic improvements and drive higher milk fat yield. Rushing weight loss goals can be counterproductive, and it's important to focus on sustainable changes and enjoy the process. Breaking unfavorable habits requires acceptance, self-reflection, and finding alternative activities or rituals to replace them. Bloating can have various causes, including PMS, stress, certain foods, or eating too quickly or too close to exercise. The preference for high-fat or high-carb diets is largely subjective, and what works best for one person may not work for another. Reducing starchy carbs and increasing protein and fiber intake can help with weight loss, but the overall calorie deficit is the key factor. Lower carb diets may reduce hunger and be beneficial for individuals with insulin resistance, but individual needs and preferences should be considered. Competing is a complex topic that will be discussed in more detail in a future episode.

Mimi Morgan grew up in New Jersey, and despite developing asthma at the age of two, she spent lots of time outdoors, taking care of, and riding horses. Even though she had asthma from a young age, Mimi was always adventuresome. She had loved hiking, kayaking, dog sledding, and loved the outdoors in general. Unfortunately, her low fat, low protein way of eating ultimately brought about some serious health issues. She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and Parkinson's disease. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with spinal osteomyelitis, and her health was steadily declining. It was not until she finally reduced her carbs and increased her protein and fat that she began to see some pretty amazing results. Over time she was even able to reduce her medications from thirteen to zero! She has now shared her story on several major podcasts, including the Dr. Shawn Baker Podcast, Fitness Confidential with Vinnie Tortorich, Off Of The Couch with Maggie Stewart, and Carnivorist Chats with James Lemon, all of which are former guests on our show. Ricardo is a HCPC Registered Dietitian-UK, SENr Registered Sport Dietitian- UK, Accredited Practicing Dietitian-Aus and Advanced Sports Dietitian-Aus, who came to Monash University in August 2013 from Coventry University-UK. Ricardo completed his PhD at the University of Wales- UK, in neuroendocrine and nutritional immunology on the influence of sleep deprivation, cold exposure, exercise stress and nutritional intervention on selected immune responses; which examined the impact of individual and combined stressors on immune function. Additionally, the role of nutrition intervention in the effect of exercise on immune function. Ricardo's recent work has focused on the impact of multi-stressor activity on immune, thermoregulatory, and gastrointestinal health; and additionally, the impact of ultra-marathon competition on nutrition and hydration status, and implication for health. Ricardo's research interests include the impact of exercise stress with and without other stressors on gut health, and role of nutrition under stress on gut health. Over the last few years he has established and led an international multi-centre research team investigating the impact of ultra-endurance competition on nutritional and hydration status, and on various physiological and immunological parameters; in which issue of gut health have been identified. Previously, as course director for Sports Dietetic training in the UK, he was an active consultant and supervisor in Sports Dietetics, providing and supervising sport and exercise nutritional support to a wide range of sports at recreational, amateur, and elite (Olympic athletes) level. Ricardo contacted me in regards to a research paper that was just published, in collaboration with the AIS, assessing the impact of the ketogenic low carb high fat diet on the gut health of elite endurance/ultra endurance athletes. Our results were a bit concerning, in that even a short term LCHF diet was sufficient to seriously disturb gut markers, including increased bacterial endotoxin translocation into the blood stream. Ricardo discusses this research. Links to papers: https://doi.org/10.1123/ijsnem.2023-0009 https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphys.2021.773054/full
Low Fat and No Fat foods are no longer popular (thank goodness). For a long time, FAT took the blame for cardiovascular disease. Well, as it turns out, encouraging people to consume low-fat foods inadvertently increased the public's consumption of sugar and ultra-processed foods. Instead of improving the health of the general public, cardiovascular disease continued to increase along with the average waistline of most Americans. Not too fast though, doctors were beating the low-fat drum too. Now what?Well, first, anytime an essential nutrient is being blamed for all health woes you should immediately question said advice. Second, listen to this episode to find out why fat is actually an important part of your diet, which fats you should consume, and how much.Follow me on Instagram @angelalifestylemd and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to my podcast & SHARE this episode.

Tune in as we chat about the problem with insulin resistance and a simple test to tell if you are insulin resistant. 4 Secrets to Detox Masterclass. [00:40] Richard Speaks About His Health Problems and How Keto Transformed His Life Richard was clinically obese, diabetic, chronically tired, depressed, anxious, and experienced debilitating migraines that would make him blind. The worst part of Richard's health was his anxiety; he wouldn't be able to leave his house, car, or office. Richard never felt good enough to be around other people. Eventually, Richard realized that bread made his belly swell. So, he gave it up. Within 30 days of ditching bread, Richard lost 28 pounds. Starting keto has completely changed Richard's life; luckily, every factor of his life has improved. [26:20] Cholesterol Isn't The Enemy; In Fact, Cholesterol is Essential For Health Cholesterol is essential for life. It's imperative for cell formation, cell communication, nutrient absorption, nutrient transportation, and hormone production. The brain and the myelin sheath are made of cholesterol. Lacking cholesterol would be detrimental to your health. There is a massive miscommunication when it comes to cholesterol. LDL is proactive; it heals the body and repairs it. The two main contributing factors to heart disease are grains and seed oils. Seed oils do not help lower cholesterol. Reducing carbohydrates and seed oils is the best way to have healthy LDL. [35:00] Is Your Cholesterol Profile Damaged? Richard Explains Where Your Markers Should Be There's a simple way to see whether your cholesterol profile is damaged. Triglycerides are one of the most significant factors; aim for less than 0.5%. HDL should be greater than 1.5. The triglyceride to HDL ratio should be below one. You're in good shape if your cholesterol profile is around these markers. Remember, cholesterol is essential for life; every cell in the body is made of cholesterol. [39:45] You Can't Store Fat Without Insulin From Carbohydrates, Sugars, and Seed Oils We can't store fat without insulin. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas when we consume carbohydrates. Many people will eat carbs before going to the gym to have the energy to burn fat. However, when insulin is elevated, it tells the body to store fat. Eating carbs will make it almost impossible for us to burn fat for fuel. Insulin puts a biological lock on our fat stores and prevents them from leaving. Carbohydrates and sugars will increase insulin. Seed oils will also impact insulin; they cause insulin resistance. [42:40] The Foods You Eat Could Be Blocking Your Ability To Feel Full Leptin is a satiety hormone. It tells us that we have eaten and that we are full. Seed oils will block leptin. If you aren't feeling full, you will consume more food. Grains are high in lectins; they cause five times more fat storage than insulin. Lectins in grains will also block leptin. [49:55] Richard Reveals A Simple Test To Tell If You're Insulin Resistant As a world, we are insulin resistant. In fact, 95% of people are insulin resistant. Diabetes will start with food choices that began ten to fifteen years prior. There's a simple way to test if you suffer from insulin resistance. You have insulin resistance if you have an overhang over your pants, belt, or skirt. Restrict carbohydrates, and you will see a reduction in insulin levels. You don't need a myriad of medications to solve insulin resistance. AND MUCH MORE! In this exciting interview, we sit down with Robert, also known as Keto Savage, to discuss his journey from traditional "bro-dieting" to the ketogenic diet. For the first 5 years of his bodybuilding career, Robert followed a strict protocol of eating every 2-3 hours and counting calories and macros to the gram. However, this approach led to serious eating disorders, hormone imbalances, and a terrible relationship with food.In 2014, Robert discovered Carb-Backloading, a dieting approach that involved removing all carbs during the day and consuming a large amount of high glycemic carbohydrates at night. But after experiencing GI distress, he decided to eliminate carbs entirely and discovered the benefits of the ketogenic diet. Despite the lack of hype surrounding keto at the time, Robert noticed an almost immediate improvement in his relationship with food and gym performance.Furthermore, Robert shares his experience with the ketogenic diet and how it has transformed his life for the better. From improved mental and physical energy to inflammation reduction and easier maintenance of a lean physique, Robert's journey is an inspiring example of the power of finding the right nutrition approach. Tune in to learn more about Robert's journey and the benefits of the ketogenic diet.Thank you so much for listening to my podcast. I hope you enjoyed it. Your support means the absolute world to me. Leighton comes from a long history of healthcare professionals in his family, and he himself studied naturopathic medicine and computer science, and he has an entrepreneurial mindset. While training for Triathlon and Ultra endurance events, he found that the market for fueling drinks and bars was full of sugar, syrup, and refined grains. With his nutrition training and ultra-endurance racing experience - he knew he could create something better. So after many years of product development, SFuels was born. SFuels was developed with sports physiologist and world-renowned coach Dr. Dan Plews, Ultramarathon world record holder Zach Bitter, Olympic Triathlon medalist Hayden Wilde and many other world class endurance experts. Timestamps 2:33 - Greg and Leighton rewind the clock and Leighton explains his early interests and achievements in sport and then onto sport science. Avoid Bonking - Finish Stronger - Reduce Gut Stress 10:00 - After finding a love for sport as a young man, Leighton combined his love for nutrition & natural medicine, his tech skills and knowledge, and mixed it with his entreprenurial mindset to develop his first business in Hong Kong. He tested his first prototype products on himself in 2016 with the aim for helping with inflammation (rather than low-carb) 13:35 - Sports Scientist & IRONMAN® Kona Age Group Record Holder & World Class Coach Dr. Dan Plews got involved with Leighton and they went through 17 iterations of their first nutrition training sports nutrition bar. ... the market for training drinks and bars was full of sugar, syrup and refined grains 21:56 - Greg & Leighton discuss some of the highs and lows Leighton has had in the process of starting and building SFuels. The joy is in the journey ... 25:09 - Leighton is an Ultra-Marathon runner and discusses the various races he has competed in and the challenges of each race. It's one thing for a product to feel good taste good while youre sitting on a couch ... but when youre 6 hours into a ride run, how that thing tastes and it's texture can be quite different, so testing product in those duress situations has been an added bonus for Leighton and his scientific team. Don't forget to check out Any Question and ask Greg Bennett any question you want 28:30 - Leighton explains how they came up with the company name SFuels. 33:29 - When Zach Bitter decided to set the record for a sub 7 minute/mile over 100 miles during COVID lockdowns, Leighton saw it as an opportunity to run the event on social media and get the SFuels name out to the world. 30,000 people watched Zach live running on treadmill. 37:46 - Leighton describes how they were measuring and what improvements they saw in pro athletes and their Fat & Carbohydrate oxidation. The improvements saw athletes improve from 165 watts on the bike ... to 300 watts on the bike. Fat Oxidation x3 improvement - Power x2 improvement 41:22 - Leighton explains the meaning behind the SFuels slogan - Right Fuel - Right Time 45:01 - Not a high performance athlete? Leighton and SFuels definitely have product plans for the day-to-day nutrition customers. Greg & Leighton explain the product range and how you can tap into the benefits. 47:15 - Mitigate Gut Distress. Lower Inflammation Through efficient oxidation of fat for fuel, athletes do NOT need to over-consume sugar in races, mitigating Gut/GI distress and lowering inflammation. Gut repair and recovery 51:53 - The science is still catching up to understand the role of nutrients and how it affects heart rate variability. Taking nutrients to help breakthrough the reserach and help in training and race performance is achievable and very real right now. Catch the video on our YouTube channel "SKULLBELLZTV" ! We are honored once again to be joined by the one and only 15 year carnivore/keto “veteran” and nutritionist DANI CONWAY herself! Last year on E63 of our show ( https://open.spotify.com/episode/6hmardSAPrUg9Ujn6Ktc6s?si=isQQU5StT2OUtaQqhi-42Q ) we discussed her story and experience in helping people optimize their hormones, increase their gut health, fat loss and much more through a meat based diet. She successfully helped heal her OWN body with a carnivore diet approach from hormonal issues, digestive issues…even improving your mental health! We talked all about that on Episode 63 so maybe check out that one if you're new to the show! Female infertility is a heart breaking condition for many couples. Long before a woman or a couple decide they need to see a reproductive endocrinologist they should look at the underlying cause, which for most women is insulin resistance. If you take care of that, something that the Ketogenic way of life is tremendously effective with, then you may not need further medical intervention.Join me in this discussion of PSCOS in Women and what to do about it, and its parallel condition in men.
