Glen Macdonald: Forge a legacy by staying true to your purpose and values

Glen's path didn't become clear to him until his mid 40s, when as a management consulting partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, he realized he was increasingly dissatisfied with how he felt at work every day. He enjoyed the problem solving, the intellectual challenge of working with businesses and their issues, but he felt something was missing. He had turned away from his purpose. From that point, Glen' s journey has been filled with a number of pivots and leaps of faith, always keeping in mind his purpose. Glen has always felt that the way to solve problems and create opportunities for people was through understanding the way the world works, and the mechanics of policy, economics, business, and nonprofits.Glen is fond of epiphanies, and The Wealth and Giving Forum created an environment in which people could have epiphanies about what their wealth meant to them and how to use it with meaning. Glen made an astute observation about impact investing: "This is not about philanthropy; this is about money. This is about money and how it circulates in our society.” And venture capitalist Ross Baird reminded him, "You can't think and behave this way with one pocket and another way with the other pocket. It's all one." Glen also hadn't given much thought about the word legacy until he heard the stories of Alfred Noble's rare “life history do-over” and billionaire Ken Behring's journey to creating the Wheelchair Foundation. He realized he had never thought about what people would say about him when he moves on, which is a very helpful thing to help you pinpoint your legacy. This epiphany was highlighted by Ken's words at a WGF meeting "Don't do what I did. Don't just accumulate and wait until you're 74 to find purpose and happiness in life." From this, Glen hopes people will look for their purpose and legacy early, because you can miss it.Glen has high hopes for younger generations' ability to address injustice and trauma. Injustice anywhere, is injustice everywhere; trauma in one place can lead to trauma in another. "It's not just about the policy and government, it's what we do at our workplaces." Millennials are pushing corporations to adopt beliefs, policies, attitudes and cultural mores that will not result in trauma that manifests itself when people interact with one another. Takeaways: Curate conversations that help you decide your purpose. Align work and money with your values and create a legacy through investing in yourself, your work, your community, impact investing and philanthropy.Sometimes you have to give up who you are to become who you want to be. And it's hard, like a reptile that has to shed its skin. There is no straight path to a legacy at work. Glen believes that who you owe an answer to at the end of your life is yourself! Don't get to the end and imagine you missed it. Take risks to make what you believe in happen. Quotes: “Wine, is a subject that no one can master, just like it's hard to master yourself.”“At the end of the day I think it's your heart and your belly that rules.” “Reflect on yourself. You don't have to be a billionaire to do that. At any level you can decide what you want your intended legacy to be.How to reach Glen: shoot him a message on LinkedIn.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/glen-macdonald-5915ba5/Bio: Glen Macdonald is a Senior Vice President at Morgan Stanley and Co-founder and Chairman of the Wealth and Giving Forum (WGF). Empower by Example   Episode 7 - Heather Arnet, CEO Women and Girls Foundation of Southwestern PA   Get to know Heather Arnet and her work at WGF!!  From theater to branding to business development, Heather used her experience as a feminist/activist theater director to step into the role of CEO of a women’s fund that was founded in Pittsburgh in the late 1990’s.  Arnet joined the organization in 2004 and she is a tireless advocate for women and girls rights locally, nationally, and internationally. She serves as a regular Op-Ed writer for the Huffington Post, Daily Beast, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Pittsburgh Business Times, and commentator to local and national media regarding women and girls’ rights and economic development.  At WGF, Arnet has spearheaded efforts to decrease the gender wage gap and increase women’s representation on public and corporate boards.   Her mission is so big that everyone wants to be a part of it.  There are so many things that impact women and girls, and advocacy work with that gender lens is critical in Pennsylvania.  Femisphire is a report WGF released in 2016 that cited 76% of Pittsburgh households living in poverty are single moms.  This report grabbed the attention of the larger foundations and endowments in the area, which has led to several initiatives that put single moms at the center of conversations about economic development, the transportation solutions, and fair wages.  Learn more by reading the report here: https://wgfpa.org/Femisphere-Phase-One-Presentation-September-2016-combined-3.pdf or watching a short video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sbqyXPvfNI   For more information about intersectionality, Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw’s Ted Talk is here: https://www.ted.com/talks/kimberle_crenshaw_the_urgency_of_intersectionality?language=en   When Arnet came on as CEO, she spent some time asking “Where are the girls?”  The GirlGov program was born as they brought girls in to create and run their own programs.  It speaks to the culture of WGF, where programs are created by the end user and the participants themselves.  Along those lines, in 2019 Codeswitch was an innovative hack-a-thon that put the single moms at the center of all of the conversations.  Heather Hopson of Single Mom Defined facilitated 40 single moms attending and participating in a technological solution that would benefit them in the Femisphere.  The entire facilitation from the initial meeting to the awards ceremony was about the absolute best product that could be achieved.     You can learn more about Codeswitch here: https://wgfpa.org/our-work/codeswitch/ If you are a single mom living in the Pittsburgh area, check out Single Mom Defined: https://www.facebook.com/SingleMomDefined/   WGF is a leader in policy that supports families, and Heather is mobilizing politicians to create policies that reframe the way our society takes leave from work to care from their families.  The Family Care Act refers to paid medical leave and insurance funds.  To support this bill sign up for the action steps:   For more information about Pediatric Palliative Care, check out their organization’s website: https://getpalliativecare.org/whatis/pediatric/   You can also follow Women and Girls foundation::   Newsletter: https://wgfpa.org/news-events/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/wgfpa IG: https://www.instagram.com/wgfpa/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/wgfpa?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor     Music by Buscrates (https://www.instagram.com/buscrates/?hl=de)

The mission of the World Golf Foundation is to unite the golf industry in support of initiatives that enhance the growth of and provide access to the game of golf worldwide, while preserving golf's traditional values and passing them on to others. In support of that mission, World Golf Foundation focuses on a variety of initiatives to grow and celebrate the game of golf around the world. Through The First Tee, the WGF focuses on positively impacting the lives of young people. Under the banner of the World Golf Hall of Fame, it recognizes and celebrates golf's greatest players and contributors and serves as an inspiration to golfers and fans worldwide. The World Golf Foundation's GOLF 20/20 initiative pursues programs to ensure golf's continued growth and vitality. On Social Media: Twitter and Instagram: @wearegolf and @womensgolfday Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wearegolf/ HISTORY OF THE WORLD GOLF FOUNDATION In the late 1980s, PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman began to consider the benefits of having a PGA TOUR Hall of Fame near the TOUR's headquarters in northeast Florida and adjacent to the heavily-trafficked I-95 corridor. A few years later, after land for the project had been secured, Beman called LPGA Commissioner Charlie Mechem and invited the LPGA to join with the TOUR in the project; the LPGA had had a Hall of Fame for years on paper, but never a place they could appropriately honor their great players. Once the LPGA agreed to participate, the TOUR reached out to other major golf organizations; the USGA and the R&A agreed to contribute to the project, and the PGA of America subsequently decided to close the former World Golf Hall of Fame in Pinehurst and consolidate it with the new project. The new World Golf Hall of Fame, at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, was born. When it became obvious that this was no longer a PGA TOUR project but rather something beneficial for the entire world of golf, Beman and his associates at the TOUR determined that a new management organization was required, an ecumenical entity that would have no other agenda than the promotion and honoring of the game's most significant contributors. In 1994 the World Golf Foundation was formed, with an independent Board of Directors. New PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem was named Chairman, and the other major golf associations had representation on the Board as well. It was always assumed that a significant charitable outreach program would emerge from the Hall of Fame and the World Golf Foundation. It was Finchem's vision to find a way to bring the game of golf to youngsters who would never otherwise have the chance to experience the benefits and assimilate the values inherent in the game. Through his leadership, and the powerful support of Honorary Chairman President George H.W. Bush, The First Tee was announced in 1997. Today it stands as the most successful youth outreach program in the history of golf. The third initiative of the World Golf Foundation was launched in 2000. The golf industry was not growing as it had in the 1990s even though interest in the game had never been greater. Industry leaders approached Finchem about having the World Golf Foundation oversee an initiative to focus on the future vitality of the game. GOLF 20/20 was created for that purpose, and the first annual 20/20 conference was held in November of 2000, in conjunction with the annual Hall of Fame Induction.
