Eve from Federal Way has asked us for help with her boyfriend Derek who she says is chronically late. She says she feels disrespected because he is especially late to things that are important to her, but is usually on time, or even early, for things that are important to him. Her examples include him being late picking up their children and to parties she throws, but being hours early for his Seahawks tailgates with his buddies. When Derek comes on he says Eve is just picking out isolated incidents and making a huge deal out of nothing. He says he knows about the tailgates because they are on a calendar but picking up kids is usually last minute and easy to forget. The P1’s are split – some think Derek is being disrespectful of Eve’s time, others think he is just unintentionally flaky and have suggestions for how he can get more organized. But we ALL agree that Fitz’s unusual brand of “Kiss Therapy” is one of the weirdest things we’ve ever heard.

Today our expert guest is Derek Stone. After working to support his family as a struggling artist, he chose to reevaluate his life and his way of thinking. In three short years, he grew a small one-man show into a multi-million-dollar company. When Derek's business first hit seven figures, he tried to identify what the turning point could have been. He traced back his incredible transformation to the decision to forgive his father. He left the path of blame and began traveling down the path of forgiveness, which led him to live his best life. He is now on a mission to empower others to make similar transformations by helping them take charge of their own lives. Derek's childhood involved several traumas. He was sexually abused by his step-father, he didn't know where his next meals would come from, and they often lost power or hot water due to unpaid bills. He blamed his dad because he believed it was his responsibility to protect Derek from these things. He lived with a facade that everything was alright, but inside he was increasingly bitter. He carried that anger until he was 19, when he attended a conference called Stomping Out the Darkness, based on the book “Stomping Out the Darkness” by Neil T. Anderson and Dave Park. It was there that he confronted the idea of forgiving his dad. David began to forgive everyone in his life that had wronged him as they came to his mind — his father, his mother, his abuser. When he was done, he didn't feel a need to hide behind his facade anymore. He rekindled his relationship with his father, and he felt a burden lifted from him. In 2014, David's construction business began taking off. He found it hard to balance that work, family events, and his passion for touring as a musician. He made the decision to walk away from touring. This led to some serious depression — not because he wasn't touring, but because he lost the platform for his message. Eventually, it came to him that he could share the message in a book: “Why Should I Forgive?”   The process of forgiveness is not easy, but it is so important to your development as a person. Outline the vision of where you want your life to go and what kind of person you want to be. Cleanse your surroundings of toxic, negative people. You want to emulate positive, healthy people. Figure out how to make healthy decisions. Take responsibility for your own life. Deal with the self-critic and the cost of bitterness.   Even when someone has done you real harm, forgiveness is an act you do for you. It is not a justification for what they did to you but giving yourself permission to stop holding on. It is a gift you give yourself.    The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “You're not a victim. When you play the victim, you give the person who harmed you power over you. You have to get to the point where you say ‘No more. I am not a victim.' For claiming that will disarm the power your offender has over you. You are enough. You have what it takes. I believe in you. You must believe in you. There is greatness within you and within all of us because we were created by perfection in his image. You have to participate in your own rescue, as my friend Tommy Breedlove says. Phillippians 1:6 says ‘And I am sure of this that he who began a good work will bring it to completion.' So go. If you still have breath in your lungs, go. Go and change the world. You are going to help create the world that my kids grow up in, and their kids, and I want to leave it better than I found it. Together you and me, armed with the power that forgiveness brings to set others free, we can do this. You can do this. For whatever is your why, choose to forgive.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Derek took his last drink August 22, 2019.  This is his story. On today’s episode Paul talks about what a Nolo drink is, non-alcoholic beers, and kombucha…and whether, or not, we should stay away from them if they have trace amounts of alcohol.  He also talks about the roll, if any, that cannabis and plant medicine play in recovery.  Paul also explains about some of the changes taking place with Café RE.  Sone of the changes is, starting on May 1st, 15% of the membership fees will dedicated towards a partnership with a non-profit organization that is geared towards helping those affected by addiction.    The link to the article where Paul gets his information from can be found here.    [15:35] Paul introduces Derek.    Derek is 35-year-old and is from New York City, currently living in Philadelphia, and is a real estate agent.  Derek loves riding his bike and playing ping pong.        [18:42] Give us a background on your drinking.   Derek started drinking when he was 13 years old, drinking on the streets of New York.  Derek realized that he loved the feeling of being out of control. When Derek was 17 years old his father was killed in the World Trade Center and he used alcohol to cover up those feelings.  Alcohol helped him get through those brutal moments and became like his best friend.  He says he continued to drink like that up until 6 months ago (his sobriety date) and those feelings are all coming back up.             [21:00] When did you start to realize that alcohol was not working for you?    Derek said it was about 3 years ago.  The negative started to outweigh the positive.       [23:14] What happened when you realized this?      Derek said he started keeping track on a calendar of his drinking days, verses his non-drinking days.  He tried to slow down.  He started making negotiations with himself, like not drinking during the week, only drinking beer.  One very drunk night he realized that he just had to stop, that moderation did not work for him.        [27:35] Why do you think willpower flew out the window when you were drinking?   Derek said that when he took that first sip he was no longer in control.  He said it was like a monster that lived inside of him and every time he let it out, he was no longer in control.          [32:33] Talk to us about that moment you stopped drinking, and how you did it.    Derek said the first couple days were easy because he had such a bad hangover, but the first weekend was tough because he didn’t know what to do, that he had not gone a weekend without drinking in years and years.  He said what he started to do was start to do the things he enjoyed again.  He started to play the piano and guitar again, started to workout again.        [35:30] How did you do it after the first week?   Derek says he started watching YouTube videos of people that had gotten sober.  He found the Recovery Elevator app…and then the podcast.           [37:20] What are some of the emotions you are facing now that you are no longer drinking?   Derek said that in a way he had never dealt with losing his dad in the way he had.  He recently got married and could not share that with his father.       [38:10] What is important to you in life?   Derek says his health is one of the most important things to him.  He said that also that just who he is, is important to him.  Drinking made him a liar and selfish, and that has changed a lot.  He now tries to be a better person overall.    [38:50] What are some strategies you use now, instead of drinking?   Derek says that exercise is big, he wakes up early to exercise.  He has started using a steam sauna, ping pong, biking, outdoor activities.  Derek also said that talking to other people that have similar stories, that he had just attended his first meeting.    [39:40] What roll has your wife played in this?   Derek said that his wife stopped drinking with him and that she has been his biggest supporter.    [43:30] Rapid Fire Round   What’s a lightbulb moment you’ve had on this journey?   That I am stronger than I thought I was.    What’s an excuse that you used to tell yourself for why you couldn’t quit drinking?   My friends, my social circle…what would I do, I wouldn’t have anyone.   What’s your favorite alcohol-free drink?   Coffee or seltzer.    What are some of your favorite resources?   Your podcast, I’m not just trying to blow smoke, it’s really helped me a lot.       What is on your bucket list in a life without alcohol?   To stay alcohol free is the number one thing, and I would like to travel again.      What are your thoughts on relapse?   It’s never going to happen to me.    What parting piece of guidance can you give to listeners?   Just do it.    You might need to ditch the booze if...             You think you might need to ditch the booze.      Upcoming Events and Retreats.  Recovery Elevator LIVE: Dancing with the Mind - in Colorado – June 11-14th, 2020 You can find more information about our event here.   The book, Alcohol is Sh!t, is out.  Pick up your paperback copy on Amazon here!  You can get the Audible version here!   Resources mentioned in this episode:   Connect with Cafe RE- Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY for your first month free Sobriety Tracker iTunes Sobriety Tracker Android Sober Selfies! - Send your Sober Selfie and your Success Story to info@recoveryelevator.com   “Recovery Elevator – You took the elevator down, you have to take the stairs back up.  You can do this.”

“Understudy” premiered on April 9th, 2012. It was written by Jerome Hairston, and directed by Adam Dernstein. The viewership dipped yet again from the previous week, premiering to an audience of 5.99 million viewers. Songs this week featured one cover of Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” and two original songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman: a sort of reprise of Marilyn’s very first song in the series, but this time Katherine McPhee singing “Never Give All the Heart,” and a new song featuring stand-in Christian Borle called “Don’t Say Yes Until I Finish Talking.” The episode opens with a room of cast, creatives and investors waiting to start a reading of the Bombshell script. Waiting, that is, on Hollywood star Rebecca Duvall - who misses playing Marilyn in the reading because she’s stuck in Cuba. In Rebecca’s absence, Tom, Julia and Derek come to Karen telling her that “they want her to understudy Marilyn.” Many of her ensemblist cohorts giggle with Karen excitedly, but Bobby and Sam note that “she’s never going to hack it - especially after Ivy breaks her kneecaps.” Ivy is furious that Karen has been given the job, even when Derek tells her that her outburst at Heaven on Earth means he can’t “even hire her for the chorus.” Derek verbally assaults Karen in rehearsal, which causes Bobby and Jessica and place bets on whether Karen will cry. Later at her apartment, Ivy shows a moment of kindness and advises Derek that “the only directors that were ever successful with Marilyn were the ones who babied her.” She continues her rebranding campaign, joining Karen and the ensemblists of Bombshell for appletinis after rehearsal and bringing her once-rival a pair of Monroe-inspired sunglasses.  Back in rehearsal, Derek calls the cast to run “the Zanuck number” about Darryl R. Zanuck, producer of All About Eve and The Grapes of Wrath. When Derek asks “Where is Zanuck?,” Tom replies “You don’t want to know, but I’m standing in today.” The steam room-inspired number is performed full out by Manuel Herrera, Curtis Holbrook, Keith Kuhl, Spencer Liff, Leslie Odom, Jr., J. Manuel Santos, Phillip Spaeth and Wesley Taylor, One run through seems to be good enough, as Derek gives no notes and quickly moves on to Karen to guide her with kindness. When Rebecca Duvall’s return is imminent, Derek shows up at Karen’s apartment to thank her for her good work. Not only that - he apologizes to Karen for his behavior back in the pilot episode. When Karen’s boyfriend Dev sees Derek walking out of their building, the two men get into a sidewalk fist fight. Dev floats the idea that she quit the show to avoid Derek. She argues back, telling Dev “Marilyn is everything I came to this city to do - everything that I want to be.” She goes to rehearsal the next day, covering the role of Marilyn until Rebecca Duvall shows (played by real life star Uma Thurman!) “How bad do you guys want to get out of your day job?” Derek Bostock joins us this week to share the story of how asking this question led to he and his business partners opening Red Deer’s newest craft brewery, Sawback Brewing. When Derek asked his now business partners to quit their day jobs he had already long since established himself as a successful entrepreneur and risk taker with his other business, the Red Deer Shooting Centre. The entrepreneurial spirit runs in Derek’s blood, and he recalls the story of how his family first came to Red Deer when he was only a year old. His father and grandfather ran a frame shop for heavy trucks and trailers, a super specialized business that like many in Saskatchewan at the time was being ravaged by the recession at the time, and so they packed up the entire family and hit the road heading to Red Deer to start fresh. This penchant for risk taking hit Derek early too, moving to Calgary at just 18 when he was still a self-described “typical Red Deer shit head” and new he needed to get out of Red Deer to get some clarity and reinvent himself. With only 20 bucks in his pocket he arrived in the city and took a job at a car dealership on commission, a huge risk that paid off. 8 years later after working his way up the ladder he was asked to come back to Red Deer to help his family open a parts division in the business. Shortly after coming back to Red Deer Derek started getting into shooting and realized there was nowhere to shoot indoors in town, so he opened the Red Deer Shooting Centre. Having not yet had his fill of challenges in running businesses in highly regulated industries he decided to expand into brewing next. He started home brewing roughly 5 years ago when only Drummond and Troubled Monk were on the scene, and while at the time they thought they’d be able to take their time but once they saw the craft beer industry in Alberta start to ramp up they knew they had to do it now, and Sawback brewing was born. He later moved to Amazon S3 (which always sounds inexpensive, but as you get billed for every single download - and you have a lot of episodes - it adds up to three (possible four) figure hosting bills). Christopher recommend Libsyn.com as he now pays one price for his hosting - no matter how many downloads he gets. You can get a free month at Libsyn.com using the coupon code sopfree. Choosing Hosts Christopher goes through a detailed planning process when launching a new show. He makes sure there is enough content to support an ongoing show (if not it may just be a segment on another show). He uses his "round table" podcast to get to know potential hosts. Getting the right people is a large part of being a successful network. Leave Your Ego At the Door Chris treats all of the shows at trek.fm as equal. They all get the same exposure by being in the "all inclusive" feed. When he chooses a host, he is looking for someone who is all about: 1. Representing Star Trek in a professional manner 2. Boosting the network - not their specific downloads (not all about them) 3. Is open to other opinions, and can discuss different opinions in an open and honest discussion (without getting personal). When Derek first started talking with his friends about about launching Monster Kid Radio, Ray Jelinek started talking about a movie he remembered seeing when he was a kid. That movie was 1975's Infra-Man (dir. Shan Hua), and while it wasn't a movie that would normally find a home in the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse, Ray's enthusiasm and outright glee when talking about this movie makes Infra-Man something we DEFINITELY need to talk about on the podcast.
