Interview by Angela CroudaceCelebrating two decades of making music, Mayday Parade frontman Derek Sanders recently opened up about the band's journey, the impact of their classic album A Lesson in Romantics, and the excitement surrounding their 20th-anniversary celebrations.“It's wild,” Sanders says of the milestone. Reflecting on how the band, formed in Tallahassee, Florida, had no idea where their musical path would take them, he describes the rollercoaster ride of watching the band's growth from young dreamers to global musicians. “It feels like it's both gone really fast, but also does kind of feel like 20 years,” he admits. Despite the speed of it all, Sanders is deeply grateful for the experiences that have come with Mayday Parade's success. The band's debut album has become a staple of pop-punk, still resonating with fans worldwide. Sanders speaks proudly of the record, remembering the raw energy they poured into it and the overwhelming joy of still playing tracks from it today. “I'm so proud of what it's become,” he says. “The fact that we can still play songs from that record and get the reactions we do is insane.”Having toured with bands like All Time Low and Simple Plan, Mayday Parade has built a rich history of unforgettable experiences. One of Sanders' earliest and most meaningful memories comes from a show in their hometown, where they opened for Further Seems Forever. “I got to sing with them on stage,” Sanders recalls, describing the experience as a full-circle moment in their career. When asked about his current musical inspirations, Sanders points to artists like Dashboard Confessional and Ben Folds. Though these influences have remained staples throughout his life, his recent obsession with Dashboard Confessional has reignited a deep appreciation for Chris Carrabba's songwriting and vocal prowess. In celebration of their 20 years, Mayday Parade are releasing a three-part album project, with the first instalment out soon. Sanders teases that the album balances their classic sound with fresh, new elements. “It feels like a good step forward for our band,” he says, hinting at exciting new musical directions. As for their upcoming tour, including their return to Australia, Sanders shares the excitement of playing bigger shows with a full production. “These will be the biggest shows we've had in Australia,” he says, reminiscing about their past tours with All Time Low and the fun times spent at Melbourne's Heartbreaker bar.Looking back at the past 20 years, Sanders reflects on the importance of staying creatively in control. The band's journey has been full of lessons, including navigating major label pressures, but he's proud of how they've found their footing. And with a legacy spanning two decades, Mayday Parade is still just as dedicated to their music and fans as ever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

They also explore the challenges and opportunities in the talent and technology space, as well as the future of recruitment and staffing. Derek highlights the importance of mentors and leaders in his career development and emphasizes the need to pay it forward. They also discuss the current labor market paradox and the role of technology in solving recruitment challenges. Derek shares insights into Opptly's mission to remove friction between talent and work through AI and automation, while still maintaining the human element of recruitment. In this conversation, Connor and Derek discuss various topics related to work and the future of work. They touch on the challenges of career transitions, the importance of support from loved ones, and the need for a fundamental rethink of the hiring process. They also explore the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs and employment, the benefits and challenges of remote work, and their predictions for the future of work.TakeawaysMentors and leaders play a crucial role in career development and it is important to pay it forward by supporting and promoting the next generation of leaders. The labor market paradox, where there is high unemployment alongside a shortage of skilled workers, can be addressed through upskilling and identifying new opportunities.Technology, such as AI and automation, can enhance the recruitment process by streamlining tasks and improving candidate matching, but the human element of recruitment and the personal touch are still essential. The recruitment and staffing sector is ripe for disruption and disintermediation, with the potential for technology to revolutionize the industry and create a more efficient and effective process. The role of recruiters may evolve into that of a concierge service, providing personalized guidance and support to candidates and clients. Career transitions can be challenging, but having the support of loved ones can make a difference. The hiring process needs a fundamental rethink to ensure that the best workers are not screened out before they even get a chance to be interviewed.Artificial intelligence has the potential to both positively and negatively impact jobs and employment.Remote work offers flexibility and efficiency, but it also requires self-discipline and the ability to set boundaries. The future of work will likely involve the rise of talent marketplaces, increased focus on work-life balance, and the need for specialized skills and expertise.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Long-standing Professional Relationship02:01 Derek's Journey to Becoming CRO at Oply12:06 Overview of Oply and its Mission16:28 Addressing the Labor Market Paradox23:57 The Need for Disruption and Disintermediation in Recruitment29:38 The Evolution of Recruiters into Concierge Services34:49 Career Transitions and Support36:19 Rethinking the Hiring Process42:35 The Impact of Artificial Intelligence54:34 Remote Work: Benefits and Challenges01:00:36 Predictions for the Future of WorkConnect with Derek here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dsanders37/

Florida rockers Mayday Parade have just added two more shows to their upcoming Australian tour after current shows sold out in record time. With the initial run of dates focusing on the bands third, self titled album, Mayday Parade have changed things up a bit with the freshly announced shows, opting to play their debut album A Lesson In Romantics in full for the two new shows. It is a decision which has made tickets to the new shows in high demand, with frontman Derek Sanders joining HEAVY before their run of shows starting April 20 to talk about the tour."It's gonna be amazing,” he enthused. “It's been so long since... 2018,2019 was the last time we were over that way and Australia has always been so good to us. The shows are incredible, we have a great time, so I'm looking forward to it very much."With so many albums to choose from, HEAVY asks Sanders why Mayday Parade have chosen to play their self titled album in its entirety for the most part of the tour."That album turned ten last year,” he explained. “Originally we wanted to do some ten year anniversary touring of that last year but obviously with the pandemic we had to keep pushing things back so we're making up for lost time and getting around to that now. That's what we're doing here in North America. This tour has been absolutely insane. It's probably been my favourite album that we've ever recorded so it means a lot to be playing these songs and be able to travel to all these places around the world and play that album means a lot."In the full interview, Derek talks about playing albums in full and how they translate from the original experience, some of his personal favourite tracks from the album, the decision to play their debut album at the added shows and how much extra work that has created, settling back into touring mods after so much time off, last years album What It Means To Fall Apart, future plans and more.

It's hard to defend pop punk these days. The party is long over, the darkness taking the place of the morning sun. It is a scene littered with the corpses of fallen and exposed heroes. But, while Rome fell – or at least the backstage area of Warped Tour – Mayday Parade kept on doing what they do; which is, crunchy guitars, yearning lyrics, melodies dropped from heaven above. The five piece, from Tallahassee, Florida, may well be – whisper it – pop punk's most consistent band. And their new album, the recently released What It Means To Fall Apart, only gives weight to the argument. After you've listened to this interview with singer Derek Sanders – in which he talks openly about the band's relationship with former singer Jason Lancaster, with insight I don't think I've ever heard him or any other member of Mayday Parade reveal before – please do consider a) rating, reviewing and subscribing to this podcast. You'll never miss an episode that way. And b) subscribing to my Substack – that's spoook.substack.com – which is the place that hosts so much of my music writing these days. Our weekly practical application of this week’s building block “U”for Understanding. There is great value in understanding AND being understood. Join this “Candid Conversation” with Derek Sanders, Author, Speaker, Blogger and Certified Relationships Coach. Derek is a native Detroiter, now living in Nashville, TN. When asked about himself he said “...I could go on with the usual personal information blast with lofty credentials which does nothing to connect you to me as a person or my purpose. Here’s what you should know ‘about me’ that matters. “Purpose-Driven dating” is the term I coined to represent dating where marriage is the destination not casual sex or other misuses of opportunites for a meaningful relationship. I still believe in that kind of love. Do you still believe or has a past of failed relationships caused you to lose hope in the possibility of experiencing lasting love?” I believe it takes a certain level of understanding to arrive at that thought process. For that reason Derek and I sat for a “Candid Conversation” about the value of “understanding”, from a perspective of people relating to one another, human to human!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Knuckle Puck over Zoom video! KNUCKLE PUCK RELEASE LYRIC VIDEO FOR NEW SONG "WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG?" — WATCH + LISTEN NEW ALBUM 20/20 ARRIVES SEPTEMBER 18 VIA RISE RECORDSChicago's Knuckle Puck — vocalist Joe Taylor, guitarist/vocalist Nick Casasanto, guitarist Kevin Maida, drummer John Siorek, and bassist Ryan Rumchaks — will release their third full-length album 20/20 on September 18 through Rise Records. The album is available for pre-order here. The band just shared the lyric video for "What Took You So Long?" Watch and listen here. "Sometimes the search for peace can bring you even further from it," says Casasanto, offering some keen insight into the track. "Writing this song helped me learn how to let go and simply be the vehicle for my own thoughts."Knuckle Puck, described as "poignant pop punk" by Paste and as "reflective and emotionally cathartic" by Distorted Sound, previously shared the music video for "Breathe," featuring Derek Sanders of Mayday Parade. Sanders also appears in the clip. The band also dropped the videos for their singles "RSVP," which was deemed "Knuckle Puck’s latest earworm" by Kerrang!, and "Tune You Out."20/20 was produced by Seth Henderson (State Champs, Real Friends) and mixed by Vince Ratti (The Wonder Years, Title Fight, The Menzingers). 20/20 is launching with a limited edition, 300-piece vinyl pre-order that includes a free zine featuring the band's personal photography. 20/20 is in many ways a companion piece to Knuckle Puck's 2015 debut Copacetic — filtering the same youthful, wide-eyed approach of their early material through the sonic evolutions they've explored since. All at once, 20/20 is both a look back and a step forward — and most importantly, it's an album that, at its core, urges listeners to live in the here and now. "Not every song has to be an existential journey," Casasanto says. "We went into this album wanting to make people feel good about who they are and not upset about who they aren't. There's so much to be angry about right now, and rather than contribute to it, we wanted to give people a reason to feel good. I want people to want to listen to this record."About Knuckle Puck:Despite its title, the second album from Knuckle Puck isn’t a reinvention; rather, Shapeshifter is the sound of the Chicago-based pop-punk band taking their best qualities and honing them to make them even sharper. The songwriting became tighter and more deliberate, the lyrics more introspective and urgent—without losing an ounce of the sweat-soaked authenticity and passion that made their debut album, Copacetic, so captivating.Above all, it’s an album that proves the band are unflinchingly unwilling to compromise when it comes to their art. That’s evident on first single “Gone,” perhaps the most fully realized Knuckle Puck song to date. It’s equal parts muscular and melodic, textured with keyboards, buzzsaw guitars and a buoyant chorus that will integrate seamlessly into the band’s raved-about live show.“When you reach early adulthood and start to see your life take shape, it’s also important to shape your identity and break yourself free from anything that might be holding you down,” guitarist Nick Casasanto explains. “I hope the album instills a little bit of hope in people. I hope people realize they should consume the things that really speak to them. Through that, I feel like it’s the most satisfying way to be who you want to be.”We want to hear from you! Communication is Key Right Now w/ Derek Sanders of DS1 - Episode 57

Dealership fiXit

Derek joined me this afternoon to discuss why communication is one of the most important things you need to put laser focus on, right now in the midst of this COVID-19 coronavirus thing we dealership people are trying to wrap our heads around. For starters, the consumer expectation has long since diverged from what dealerships (in general) are actually doing to communicate with the consumer, on the consumers' preferred terms. Consumers right now are scared and uncertain. If they reach out to a dealership, we need to be the rock for them to count on. Communication is key to be that rock! If you have a vendor that provides any communication service - which ones are they? Are you paying for it? Are you using it? Are you using it effectively? This relates to all communication streams. I know at Trader, we provide phone call tracking but maybe more importantly right now, we provide texting, chat and even managed chat in dealer packages. I have dealers who have them and chose not to activate them because they didn't have the time to learn them or weren't interested in holding their staff accountable up to now. I think the events we are experiencing are the perfect time to hit the reset button on that mentality. Call your product/service reps, ask if you have any services like that that you aren't using. Have them get you and your staff trained on them. Have a plan with expectations so everyone in the store knows what the plan and goals are in all communications. As Derek said, if your team is saying they need to get a customer into the store to move past a call or message communication - you may be dead in the water in this, the new world that we were just thrust into. A lot more in the chat today with Derek. He is always a great guest. I appreciate him coming on to share his experiences. Derek Sanders, lead singer of emo punk band, Mayday Parade, joins us on this episode of The Adamantium Podcast. We talk about being one of the hardest working touring bands in the world, the end of Warped Tour, and their Halloween show. We also discuss their new album, Sunnyland, the transgression of the ‘emo' genre, and how their songwriting has adapted over the last decade. Derek tells us which songs have “saved his life” as well as his favourites to play live.

"It kind of gradually became more and more of a thing", said Mayday Parade vocalist Derek Sanders. "There was a band that some of us were in before Mayday Parade called Defining Moment and it really was just learning all along the way. Things like how to actually be in a band and how to make this work. We did our touring and we would go to the malls and walk around with CD players trying to sell our CD's - maybe three or four each time - and somewhere along the way we tried that outside of festivals where there's thousands of people lined up and we sold 100 CD's in one day and realised we could get our music out there much faster and much more effectively doing that than trying to tour".Listen to the full interview to hear Derek discuss their upcoming appearance at Good Things festival, whether they prefer to play festivals or their own shows, the main differences from a band perspective at playing the two, what we can expect, the early days of the band, what drove them musically and more.By Kris Peters
